Wilco Warsaw

David Weinberg was one of those who waited in line this afternoon (May 12, 2007) to get a ticket to see Wilco at Warsaw in Brooklyn. As you can see from the above voucher, they're taking the no-scalping thing very seriously.

John Darnielle & Franklin Bruno @ Sound Fix, Brooklyn - May 11, 2007 (CRED)
John Darnielle @ Sound Fix

Last night (May 11) John Darnielle (The Mountain Goats) played a show at Sound Fix Records - also in Brooklyn. More pictures like the one above at "drop out / pop out"'s Flickr. I wonder if CocoRosie was in the crowd.

Monday night (May 14) Sound Fix is hosting a screening fo the new Wilco DVD. Details on that below...

On Monday May 14th, 2007 at 10:00pm Sound Fix will be screening the new Wilco "Sky Blue Sky" DVD in their new café with an open bar following at 11:00pm. At midnight, Sound Fix will be selling the album, and with every purchase you'll receive an exclusive EP featuring 2 unreleased Wilco tracks not available on "Sky Blue Sky" ("One True Vine" and live track "Theologians"). In addition the first 20 people will receive a Wilco T-Shirt with their purchase.

Also, all in attendance will have the opportunity to win (1 of 5) Wilco t-shirt/tote bag prize packs.

I don't get what the Tribeca Film Festival (a real festival that ended on May 6th) has to do with the High Line Festival (which started on May 9th, and is just a bunch of concerts and a few movies), but OK (via Gawker).

Becca went to see Air and TV on the Radio at the Theater at MSG last night, and didn't even realize it was part of the "The High Line Festival". The Music Snobbery guy knew full well what he was getting in to. According to Steve in the comments, TV on the Radio played just six songs (acoustic). I took last night off.

CONTEST ONE
We have 10 download cards available for the first 10 people to write in (BVCONTESTS@HOTMAIL.COM) with "EL-P" in the subject line. Winners can download a Def Jux MP3 package containing Flyentology and Smithereens remixes, and videos, and some other Def Jux tracks from Aesop Rock, Rob Sonic, and more.

CONTEST TWO
This is a little left of center for the Hip Hop post, but a few weeks ago I went to Joe's Pub in NYC to see a special preview show of Passing Strange, and it was really awesome. It's a theatre show that felt as much as a soul/rock concert as it felt like a play. "A daring new musical that takes you on a journey across boundaries of place, identity, and theatrical convention." More info on the show can be found here.

Do you want to go? We're giving away a pair of tickets. To win, e-mail BVCONTESTS@HOTMAIL.COM (subject: Strange), and let us know what date you want to go. One winner will be picked at random and notified.

The show debuted May 10th at the Public Theatre, and there's rush and student price tickets available for $20 for those who don't win this contest. (Call 212-967-7555 from 9am-10pm, mention code PSLN01).

UNDERWORLD TOUR
UnderworldKarl Hyde (vocalist, Underworld) on Underworld's "Born Slippy" from an article in The Guardian:

We used to go out drinking in Soho and I ended up in the Ship on Wardour Street. All the lyrics were written on that night. A drunk sees the world in fragments and I wanted to recreate that...Rick [Smith] came up with a rhythm and I started singing over it. The vocals were done in one take. When I lost my place, I'd repeat the same line; that's why it goes, "lager, lager, lager, lager"... Why Born Slippy? It was a greyhound we won money on.
As previously reported, Underworld is going out on tour and will be hitting Central Park on September 14th. TICKETS ARE NOW ON SALE. The boys will be joined by Border Community's James Holden. Stay tuned for info on when Underworld will be releasing a single from their forthcoming album. If you haven't caught up with Underworld in a while, I highly recommend checking out their epic digital-only RiverRun singles.

:DFA FREAKOUT: James is a disco guy:
LCD SOUNDSYTEM live at Studio B? BANANAS. Total destruction ensues. Studio B might not be standing after this goes down. DFA DJs and mayhem.

Earplug sat down with James Murphy and he makes a really great recommendation for fans new to dance music:

Read Last Night a DJ Saved My Life by Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton. Read the disco sections and check the playlists in the back, like those from Paradise Garage, the Loft, the Funhouse, and the Palladium. It was a real eye-opener for me. There are top-10 and top-20 lists from amazing DJs of that era who were really adventurous and took chances. Just track those songs down and see what you like. It's a really great history of disco and of dance music.

Dan Deacon @ Silent Barn, NYC - May 5, 2007 (CRED)
Dan Deacon @ Silent Barn

I wonder if Dan Deacon ran into O'Death in the hallways of Purchase College. From an O'Death press release...

Originally formed in 2003 while the members attended SUNY Purchase, the band (O'Death) – with Jamie on guitar and vocals, Gabe Darling on banjo, David Rogers-Berry on drums, Jesse Newman on bass, and Bob Pycior on fiddle – self-released their first album in 2004. They quickly took to the task of stirring up a wholly original scene of NY musicians with their reverently twisted take on Americana filtered through a wealth of musical influences as divergent as Bill Monroe, Prince, Dock Boggs, Neil Young, The Microphones, and The Misfits via a series of the shows the now defunct Apocalypse Lounge
Tickets are still on sale for the Dan Deacon / Ponytail / Meneguar / Lions & Tigers show at Mercury Lounge on May 12th.

Lady Sovereign (OPENING NIGHT!) - July 7 @ 11:00pm An exclusive opening night celebration featuring one of the world’s hottest young contemporary artists. Recently back from a national tour with Gwen Stefani, Lady Sovereign has climbed to become one of the most respected hip-hop artists of her day. She’s the self-proclaimed white midget with a barely there 5’1 frame. An MC, a lyricist, a producer, the alternative microphone vandal with lyrics that hit like left and right hooks, subject matter dashing between flirtations with McDonalds and swigging Pernod. Regardless of gender or generation, you can be assured that Sovereign’s making the kind of noise that will see her reign supreme.

Weimar NY: The Spiegel Sessions - July 17 @ 10:00pm; August 28 @ 10:00pm; September 18 @ 10:00pm
WEIMAR NEW YORK is a downtown star-studded theatrical cabaret that juxtaposes the aesthetic and music of Weimar-era Berlin with that of the contemporary downtown performance scene in New York City. Performers come to the show from a variety of backgrounds: from classically trained singers and musicians to performance artists and burlesque acts. The evening celebrates the spirit of creative resistance that thrives in response to conservative political forces be they the rising tides of Nazism in Weimar Germany or fundamentalist Christianity taking root in the contemporary United States. The exclusive Spiegeltent season performers include Justin Bond, Meow Meow, Taylor Mac, Theo Bleckmann, Holcombe Waller, Sanda Weigel, Daniel Isengart, Tigger!, Helen Stratford, Adam Dugas, and Curtis Eller and may many more!

Shout Out Louds - July 19th @ 11:30pm
The new Swedish invasion continues with the Shout Out Louds, a surge of romance and urgency, happy and sad, upbeat and lingering, danceable and reflective, and fueled throughout with gut-level emotion. The band makes their Spiegeltent premiere on their return tour to the US for an exclusive NYC engagement in support of their new Merge Records release OUR ILL WILLS.

DeVotchKa - July 24 @ 10:00pm; July 25 @ 11:00pm
By overwhelming demand, DeVotchKa makes an exclusive return to the Spiegeltent for another unforgettable pair of summer concerts. With a wholly unique melding of eastern European, Mariachi, and American punk and folk roots, DeVotchKa have quietly become one of the most celebrated bands in America today. With violin, accordion, sousaphone, trumpets, piano, and too many other instruments to list - the Denver four piece creates a sweeping and divergent orchestra behind soaring vocals. Dramatic, tragic, celebratory, DeVotchKa's live show is a revelation that inspires wild dance and tears, sometimes in the same song. Called 'Everything Music Should Be," by NPR's "All Things Considered," DeVotchKa were well on their way to breakout behind three self-released records before writing and performing the Grammy nominated score for the multiple Academy Award winning film Little Miss Sunshine. DeVotchKa interrupt the recording of their highly anticipated next record to return to New York's Spiegeltent.

An Evening with Ute Lemper: ‘Voyages’ - July 31 @ 10:00pm
Ute Lemper makes her Spiegelworld premiere with a special of evening of songs set to the heartsounds of the sea. Lemper's performing career grows out of a passionate and enduring commitment to art, politics and history, and out of a contentious and complicated relationship with her homeland and its past. Her panache, versatility and sophisticated repertoire - including Berlin cabaret songs and the dark gems of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill - have led her to international acclaim as a recording artist, and in the theatre, cabaret and film worlds.

Lila Downs - August 7 @10:00pm; August 8 @ 11:30pm
Lila Downs (pronounced Lee-La) is a bi-cultural singer/songwriter raised in the Mixtec region of Oaxaca(a state of southern Mexico) and in Minnesota. Exploring and expressing Mexico's rich culture has been a lifelong passion for Lila. It was only through music that Downs reconciled her heritage. “It took a long time to decide that I wanted to sing,” she says. “Something needed to motivate me.” That motivation was the songs and stories of the Oaxacan people. Her Mixtec mother spurred Downs to sing songs with sentimiento — a deep, almost empathic emotion which has left audiences of all cultures and countries spellbound.

Badly Drawn Boy – August 14 @ 11:00pm; August 15 @ 10:00pm
A rare, intimate NYC evening with acclaimed singer-songwriter Damon Gough featuring songs from his latest acclaimed release ‘Born in the U.K.’, the heartfelt return from the British singer songwriter who gave us the stellar soundtrack to award winning film About A Boy.

José González - August 21 @ 10:00pm
Fresh out of the studio where he has just completed recording his new release slated for later this year, Gonzalez makes an exclusive NYC – area appearance. Born and raised in Gothenburg, Sweden, of Argentinean parents, 25-year-old José González is a top-ten chart artist and revered troubadour figure in Sweden, where he is cherished equally by the musical cognoscenti, seriously besotted critics and hordes of regular Nordic punters. Using just his own dexterously finger-picked classical guitar and a captivating voice - part Joao Gilberto, part Nick Drake – José’s music is as economical as it is seductive; stark but effortlessly melodious songwriting whose confessional, gently provocative lyrics (all sung in perfect English) are, by turns, poignant, intriguing and life-affirming.

O’Death - August 26 @ 11:30pm
Celebrating their recent acclaimed release on Ernest Jenning Record Co., the five guys of O’Death, maybe three shirts between them, return to the Spiegeltent stage. There’s a banjo, a fiddle, a drum set littered with gas cans, chains, and broken cymbals. Then they all start howling, stomping; it’s an anachronistic jug band party in a junkyard with sing-along hooks and weathered vocals from another time. Their fans, an ever-expanding congregation, sing along and follow the band with an almost religious fervor, and as vocalist Greg Jamie’s eyes roll back into his head there’s a sense that something almost sinisterly spiritual has overtaken everyone in the room. This is the world of O’Death.

An Albatross - September 5 @ 11:30pm
Philadelphia’s An Albatross is one of today’s not-to-be-missed live bands. They’re a sonic orgasm, a flurry of mechanical, jerky and discombobulated time signatures eclipsed by Farfisa organ/synthesizer pseudomelodies. Not unlike sitting down with an average American family behind the television set during primetime, the music is unquestionably attention-span friendly for an ADD diagnosed society: unbelievably short, complex, infectious bursts. Don’t miss the band’s Spiegeltent premiere.

Dan Zanes and Friends: Sea Music! Sing-a-Long at the Spiegeltent!’ - September 22 @ 2:00pm & 4:00pm
Grammy-Award winning family favorite Dan Zanes makes his Spiegelworld premiere with an exclusive daytime show of sea songs inspired by traditional maritime music and family outings to the South Street Seaport. A rare, intimate concert appearance from one of the country’s most popular family bands, these historical songs are of the men who worked on the sea but they're so full of vigor that they continually inspire spontaneous musical outbursts from people in all stations of life.

Penny Arcade’s BITCH! DYKE! FAGHAG! WHORE! Celebrating NYC Downtown Culture - September 11 @ 10:00pm
In 1990 Penny Arcade created the now legendary BITCH! DYKE! FAGHAG! WHORE!, her sex and censorship show, in response to the Senator Helms/National Endowment For The Arts censorship crisis. Now it returns in an exclusive Spiegeltent season for the first time in over a decade. Originally conceived as a 4 day audit for a NEA solo fellowship grant, it was a runaway success, fueled by what became known as The Drag Factor, as people returned over and over, dragging their friends, co-workers, neighbors and family to share the show and the show's cathartic audience dance break. A call for the separation of church and State, B!D!F!W! is a powerful critique of the Christian right as well as of the politically correct Left. A blend of outrageous humor, political humanism, freedom of expression and erotic dancing, Bitch! Dyke! Faghag! Whore! shocked NY's supposedly unshakeable downtown art scene with it's brazen use of strippers and erotic dancers and it's huge audience dance break. Are you ready for an epiphany?

Spiegelworld will be presented under the Brooklyn Bridge at the Fulton Fish Market starting July 2, 2007.

This is TicketMaster's idea of cool? Overcharge me for the ticket (maybe not their fault, we can blame that one on the greedy act/manager/agent), then hit me with all kinds of bogus fees and then give me ONE FREE SONG? Whoop-de-doo

Arcade Fire @ Radio City

I thought David Bowie would at least introduce Arcade Fire, or say something to kick off the "festival", but nope. He was there though - I saw him. He was wearing a gray suit, and looked happy & healthy - sort of like how he looked two nights earlier at the Met........

Iman & David Bowie @ The Met, NYC - May 7, 2007
Bowie & Iman

He came out the backstage door into the orchestra area at some point. For the encore at least - he was standing against the same wall (stage left) that the trumpet player (Kelly Pratt) (also in Beirut) ran along to do this....

Arcade Fire @ Radio City Music Hall, NYC - May 9, 2007 (CRED)
Arcade Fire @ Radio City

Arcade Fire were great, but it sounds like maybe United Palace was more fun. At Radio City there was lots of fighting (literally) between the crowd and security. A bunch of people got dragged out. The security didn't know what to do when Win encouraged people to dance in the aisles.

If Bowie had played with them, it would have looked something like THIS and THIS. Was David Byrne there? I didn't see him, but someone told me they did see Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson.

Lou Reed & Bowie @ Syracuse W Hotel - Apr 26, 2007 (INFO)
Lou Reed & David Bowie

I missed the National - not on purpose.

And just in case you were wondering, Zach Condon from Beirut was there too - it would have been the only one of the three shows he would have been able to make. Actually, they were ALL probably there - the whole indie trumpet player mafia.

----

I believe there are still tickets available for the Air, TV on the Radio, Kate Havnevick show tonight (the 2nd High Line Festival show).

Beirut is back for three shows in September. Tonight Arcade Fire hit Boston.

Satellite Party playing NYC + some sexy Coachella pics

I've been looking for an excuse (NYC show = excuse) to post these pictures of Perry and his wife Etty Farrell performing at Coachella...

Satellite Party @ Coachella

If Perry Farrell can do no wrong to you (Jane's Addiction, Porno for Pyros, etc), and you'd like to see him perform (with a member of Extreme and possibly his half-naked wife) in a fairly intimate setting (WAY more intimate than Coachella), then consider buying tickets to see Satellite Party play Highline Ballroom in NYC on June 4th (but please, do so at your own risk).

More pictures (NSFW?) & tour dates, below...

Perry's Coachella 2007 blog...

Coachella was the best this year. The giant artwork on the grounds got more and more dazzling as the night came on. Spiders and geodesic domes that glow in the dark- mushroom type pods you can stand inside; and swing rides made out of hammocks.

Satellite Party took the Friday main stage at 4:00. This was the first time Coachella went to three days (with a Rage Against The Machine set looming on the Sunday. Promoters wondered if there would be issues- there wasn't any.)

The weather rose and dove. We got lucky as the breeze up and made most forget how sweltering the heat could be out there. The sun was LOOKING AROUND FOR FRESH VICTIMS as we hit the stage. Our set began as predicted. I told everyone to expect 50 people in a field- and if it got better- than we would all feel really happy. So the set began with 55 people in the field. Rossana Arquette was filming the set for Coachella. As I walked to the mike- she said to me tell them! Tell them you are about to play! You are Perry Farrell!" I would let the music do the talking. This was an exercise in humility. As we still don't have a record out- I felt fortunate to be invited again- as this was my 8th performance at Coachella. The show went 50 minutes- and by the end of it; we had 20 thousand people stuck together watching us. This start reminded me of the early days- when I would peek out from behind the back stage curtain and see- not quite enough people to feel very special. I would try and put my mind on other things- like the set list- but I would return to the curtain line- peeking out again. Most often- the crowd would fill in when the music started, and I would begin to charm them. This was much different however; THE TRAFFIC was at a dead stop just beyond the field. We had to abandon our car on the side of the road and make a run for it! We arrived minutes before set time and there was no curtain to hide behind, or room to dress in. No sound check- no monitor man; no costume change- is everyone ready? We needed a drink--- no time for that either. What a good bunch I am with though. They hit the stage like young golden eagles; soaring in the desert breeze...

We had set off the 2007 Coachella...[MySpace]

Flight of the Conchords! Touring! HBO show in June!

First Patton. now Flight of the Conchords. I give you, more Klaus....

Flight of the ConchordsFlight of the Conchords

More f*cking awesome comedy news! I've harbored a very deep and very real love for Flight of the Concords since the moment I first saw them; where or when that exactly was I do not remember. Anyhow, their rise to super-stardom has been pretty quick and pretty consistent. Evidence of this is in their upcoming HBO Series and their semi-large venue US Tour.

If the promo clips and supporting cast are any hint as to how freaking dope their show will be, then we must all prepare ourselves for comic perfection. Arj Barker, Rhys Darby, Eugene Mirman, and Kristen Schaal are among the many talented and hilarious-in-their-own-right cast members. This link has loads of clips and info.

And let us not forget the highly anticipated live gigs they have scheduled all over the US. Their TV show is not to be missed, but their lives shows is really where it's at. Tickets are on sale for two June shows at the Gramerrcy Theatre in NYC.

Spank Rock @ Apollo Theater, NYC - pics

DOWNLOAD: Spank Rock - Bump (pink Skull Remix) (MP3)

Spank Rock @ Apollo Theater

I almost wrote that it was the wrong venue for Spank Rock to play, but then I remembered that we're talking about the legendary Apollo Theater here. In fact, even MC's Spank & Pase Rock dedicated their set to the late James Brown who played there many times (even after death). So I guess it could have been a party - actually Bjork was a party - it was just there wasn't really anybody in the place when Spank Rock started, and the people that were, were not about to get up out of their seats and start dancing (actually one guy sort of did).

Cross Pollination celebrates 3 years - FREE MIXTAPE (Cloud Cult, My Brightest Diamond, Dave Deporis, ETC..)

Cross Polination mixtapeWhile Ruined Music is celebrating it's one year anniversary over at the Delancey tonight (and stuff), BV-contributor Undisputed Wes will be celebrating the three year anniversary of "Cross Polination" - his (Liberated Matter's) weekly, free singer-songwriter-mashup series that happens every Tuesday night at Pianos in NYC. Tonight's performers will be a special mix of past Cross-Pol performers from through the years. That includes musician (and Liberated Matter partner) Jay Mankind, Here Lies PA, Wakey!Wakey!,, Jeff Jacobson, Matt Singer, Derek James, Wynn Walent, and more.

Normally there are just two artists - each plays their own set, and then they get together on stage to "cross pollinate". Tonight will probably be a whole lot of short sets, and even more cross-pollinating. It's always 100% free. More on how it normally works in the interview I did with Wes and Jay back in 2005.

If you can't be there tonight (May 8, 2007), at least partake in this 100%-absolutely-FREE "Cross-Pollination: The Mixtape Vol. 1". By "partake", I mean download the free MP3s (you'll recognize a lot of the names from the performer list above as well).....

"Mixtape Vol. 1 was compiled to celebrate Cross-Pollination, a weekly concert series that brings together some of the most incredibly, and at times, undiscovered raw talent from across the country"...

Download the whole mixtape HERE, or track by track....

CROSS-POLLINATION: THE MIXTAPE Vol. 1
01. MY BRIGHTEST DIAMOND - Hi, Remember Me? (MP3)
02. KEVIN DEVINE - You'll Only End Up Joining Them (Acstc) (MP3)
03. WAKEY!WAKEY! - Falling Apart (MP3)
04. UNDISPUTED HEAVYWEIGHTS - Roll Your Windows Down (MP3)
05. THE BLOODSUGARS - Purpose Was Again (MP3)
06. MATT SINGER - Stacy J. (MP3)
07. DEREK JAMES - Love Me, Love Me (MP3)
08. CLOUD CULT - Pretty Voice (MP3)
09. CASEY SHEA - Quinzy Howzin (MP3)
10. JEFFREY LEWIS - Tell It To Your Heart (Lou Reed Cover) (MP3)
11. THE LLOYDS - Halfway (MP3)
12. JAY MANKIND - Western States (Demo) (MP3)
13. IAN THOMAS - SBB (MP3)
14. DAVE DEPORIS - Be Strong (MP3)

It's especially nice to see Dave Deporis releasing something somewhere. Maybe one day we'll actually get an album out of him. His MySpace still has the same old songs.

More info on the mixtape HERE. Pictures of Cloud Cult playing Cross-Pol HERE. An interview with My Brightest Diamond by Wes HERE.

Ruined Music - 1 year anniversary party tonight (free PBR)

Ruined Music

Ruined Music 1 Year Anniversary Party

It’s been one year since Ruined Music started publishing true-life tales about songs people can no longer stand to hear because of bad breakups, high school traumas, talent show disasters, and dental appointments gone wrong.

Since the site began we’ve gotten mail from around the world – from Indiana to India, from London to California. The word spread via public radio, MTV, national magazines, blogs, and college newspapers.

So it’s time to celebrate. The party will include three bands, three readers telling brand-new Ruined Music stories, plus door prizes and drink specials. And the BBQ grills will be going on the roof!

The bands are The Shondes, Beat Radio, and Unsacred Hearts. The date is May 8th. The location is the Delancey in NYC. Free PBR from 7:30-8:30. More info HERE. Read Ruined Music HERE.

PATTON OSWALT signs to Sub Pop + 2007 Tour Dates w/ Janeane Garofalo

The weekly comedy canon will be back soon, but in the meantime this quick update from Klaus....

Patton Oswalt, Brian Posehn, Chris Hardwick & Mike Phirman @ Coachella (CRED)
Patton Oswalt @ Coachella

Joining the ranks of David Cross and Eugene Mirman as awesome comedians who've signed to awesome indie rock label Sub Pop, it has been announced that Patton Oswalt's next record (CD/DVD) will be released by Sub Pop on July 10, 2007. There will be a limited edition vinyl version on Stand UP! Records as well. This will be Patton's third-ish full-length live record in a sea of Patton-related full-lengths and EPs.

Patton's previous releases are, for me, the gold standard of how awesome a comedy album can be. His library has an unusually high relistenability factor, so I have high hopes for this one too. Listen to a track at 'A Whole Lotta Nothing'.

More Patton - news and tour dates - below...

Patton Oswalt / Janeane Garofalo - 2007 Tour Dates
Jun 04 Punchline, San Francisco, CA (TIX)
Jun 05 Punchline, San Francisco, CA (TIX)

Read the most incredible Patton Oswalt interview, ever. Period.

Patton and the other Comedians of Comedy were at Coachella this year. There are tons of reviews out there, but why not read Patton's personal analysis of the show (you'll need to scroll down a bit). Pics from Coachella can be found HERE and HERE

DAN
Tickets are still on sale for the upcoming Handsome Furs shows in May. More music @ their MySpace. Album out on May 22nd. Dan also had a drum machine stolen which sucks.

DANTE
Billboard is reporting that" Wolf Parade guitarist Dante DeCaro has joined forces with percussionist Lindy Gerrard to form Johnny And The Moon, which will release its self-titled debut on June 12 via micro-indie Kill Devil Hills." CMJ is reporting that the album comes out October 24, 2007. The weird part is that Stereogum says it came out in October 2006 (Canada) and January 2007 (US). The label agrees with the October 2006 date. Pitchfork reviewed it in November 2006. OK.

SPENCER & DAN & & DANTE & EVERYONE
And finally...Wolf Parade is coming out with a new album soon (early 2008?), and touring before that. They're playing Warsaw in Brooklyn on August 19th (2007). A PRESALE starts today. All tour dates below...

MAN MAN vegan dinner w/ ISA CHANDRA & NY Magazine

DOWNLOAD: Man Man - Black Mission Goggles (MP3)

DOWNLOAD: Man Man - 10 lb Moustache (MP3)
DOWNLOAD: Man Man - I, Manface (MP3)

I always mean to post some love for chef, Post Punk Kitchen TV personality and author Isa Chandra Moskowitz (another "Brooklyn Vegan")...

Vegan Vengeance

Even LargeHearted Boy beat me to this, and he's neither from Brooklyn nor Vegan (he does contribute to this Brooklyn Vegan site though, so I indirectly don't feel as bad).

What prompted this now then?

Well - as previously reported, NY Magazine is throwing six *hip* events - a series called "New York by New York". The first one was Of Montreal karaoke. The next one: VEGAN DINNER WITH MAN MAN. Man Man is playing (at a secret location in Manhattan), and Isa is cooking an 8-part meal. Wow Wow.

Tickets go on sale today. I think they're $30, but they include the food and drinks. There will only be 250 tickets too (about the capacity of Mercury Lounge?).

Man Man is currently out on tour with Modest Mouse. I didn't go to either NYC show. How were they? Shelves of Vinyl says...

Their set consisted mostly of material from their latest album "Six Demon Bag" and it was damn good (if you don't own this album I suggest getting it....it's definitely different but something to be enjoyed). I would say the fact that they had some people out of their seats getting down to the music was a good sign considering it seemed that 97% of that audience was there for Modest Mouse.
Check out Isa's Vegan Vengeance cookbook, her cupcake cookbook, videos of her TV show, and her gothamist interview.

How was the show?

I needed to cleanse my soul a little, so I instead went to see Type O Negative at Irving Plaza (the Fillmore). It my first time at Irving since it became "The Fillmore" - there were apples, there were posters on the wall, but yeah - that's about the only thing I noticed was any different. Type O, my LONG time Brooklyn rock 'n roll obsession, was great. I would go again tonight if I could (they're playing 2 sold-out nights in a row), but my obsession with Bjork is even greater (not to mention all the rest of the competition).

COCOROSIE (band) arrested, but not for killing MARC HOGAN - some tour dates cancelled, but not the FREE NYC SHOW

Cocorosie & PAris Hilton in jail

CocoRosie posted the following message on MySpace today

dear loves
we are so sorry to announce that we cannot play the rest of the us tour dates
the band got arrested, thats all i can say
we love you all
we are playing a free show in New York on may 19th
please come if you can
we are crying
say a prayer for our band
love
Sierra and Bianca
later...
According to a commenter on Punk News, "some of the band members didnt have work permits to get into the US." Whether that is true or not remains to be seen, but I think it is safe to say that neither Marc Hogan nor Antony were involved in any way. Whether or not Cocorosie or their band met Paris in Jail is also still a mystery.

Cocorosie's previously announced free NYC show is the one thing here that is actually not a mystery anymore. And it is still happening...

Largehearted Boy's Interesting CD Releases This Week

DOWNLOAD: Elliott Smith - Some Song (MP3)
DOWNLOAD: Elliott Smith - Between The Bars (MP3)

I just wanted to take this opportunity to say that I don't like the Lavendar Diamond album, that I'm totally psyched to see that the new Keren Ann is out this week (still haven't heard it), that tickets are still on sale for Keren Ann at Bowery Ballroom, that the Clientele album is streaming at Merge, that I very much want to check out that Boggs album, and that you shouldn't forget that Brakes = Brakes Brakes Brakes (in the U.S.), and that Brakes Brakes Brakes are playing two nights at Mercury Lounge with Pela. And now, Largehearted Boy....

---

Bjork VoltaBjork's Volta is the most hyped music release in a week filled with quality releases.

Fans of the late Elliott Smith will enjoy his latest posthumous album New Moon, and I can also strongly recommend Keren Ann's self-titled release, Electrelane's No Shouts, No Calls, the Clientele's God Save The Clientele, Maximo Park's Our Earthly Pleasures, and Great Lake Swimmers' Ongiara (plus about half of the below list).

What new releases can you recommend this week?

Alsace Lorraine: Dark One [cd]
The Bad Plus: PROG [cd]
Bjork: Volta [cd]

Bjork @ United Palace Theater, NYC - pics & stream

In case you were wondering what Bjork was wearing at United Palace Satuday night (May 5, 2007)...

Bjork & United Palace

Compare that with her outfits at Radio City and Coachella.

Seriously though, another great show (don't take my word for it though - LISTEN TO THE WHOLE SHOW AT NPR).

The crowd was much rowdier (LOUD in a good way) than Radio City. At Radio City people were standing and sitting and getting in fights over standing, and getting yelled at for standing, but then standing, but then sitting, etc... At United Palace everyone stood (and screamed) from start to finish.

The crowd ended up disappointing me a little though. Unlike at Bloc Party and the Stooges (Bjork was my third time at the new venue already), the United Palace security was making sure people stayed in their seats (and out of the aisles). I thought for sure everyone would disregard sercurity, and just fill the aisles and rush to the front during "Declare Independence" ("Don't let them do that to you!!"). I thought maybe we'd get a mini-revolution going (Create your own flag!). I was wrong. Show ended peacefully. Everyone gave a collective "that's it?", and then we all went home quietly and riot-free.

The set list, and some more photos, below....

Beirut, Arcade Fire & Final Fantasy @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC - pics

Beirut @ Bowery Ballroom

Beirut @ Bowery Ballroom

Everyone's around, and here's what happened at Bowery Ballroom Sunday (May 6, 2007) night: Final Fantasy (Owen Pallett) played first. Beirut came out to play with Final Fantasy for one song. Beirut played second. Final Fantasy played with Beirut for about half of their set. Four members of the Arcade Fire, Final Fantasy, and even more musicians who I didn't recognize, came out to play a song with Beirut during the encore. Sufjan Stevens, members of the National and Grizzly Bear were in the audience. Too bad Amy Winehouse didn't stop by. Great show....
