Beirut, Arcade Fire & Final Fantasy @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC - pics

Beirut @ Bowery Ballroom

Beirut @ Bowery Ballroom

Everyone's around, and here's what happened at Bowery Ballroom Sunday (May 6, 2007) night: Final Fantasy (Owen Pallett) played first. Beirut came out to play with Final Fantasy for one song. Beirut played second. Final Fantasy played with Beirut for about half of their set. Four members of the Arcade Fire, Final Fantasy, and even more musicians who I didn't recognize, came out to play a song with Beirut during the encore. Sufjan Stevens, members of the National and Grizzly Bear were in the audience. Too bad Amy Winehouse didn't stop by. Great show....

aaah fuck, i intentionally didn't get a ticket for the sunday show because i though it would get moved to a larger venue due to demand. stupid me.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2007 3:27 AM

Incredible show, incredible energy. I'm upset that I didn't get tickets for more shows this week besides this Beirut concert and AF Wednesday @ Radio City.

Posted by William V. Lupo | May 7, 2007 3:44 AM

woah.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2007 6:08 AM

last nights show and the wednesday AF are the only two shows that really matter. im very jealous of you.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2007 8:20 AM

Filmed and recorded the encore... (wanted to enjoy the rest of the show)

oh man oh man oh man.

It was so awesome... !!!

Posted by jason | May 7, 2007 8:34 AM

4/12 members hardly = Arcade Fire.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2007 8:35 AM

This was so much fun. I was so excited to see Grizzly Bear in the audience, but when Arcade Fire started playing trumpets for the encore I lost my mind. So, so good.

no Winn = no Arcade Fire.

that's like saying the Stones showed up to jam, when it was just Darryl Jones and Chuck Leavell, instead.

Now, tonight, and the next two nights, Arcade Fire's certain to show-up at UPT and RCMH.

RNRRENEGADE... i agree, however for me...
no Regine = no Arcade Fire
"Haiti" (Live) is freaking awesome.

True, Chris - Regine is, to put it in Prince's terms, "Crucial."

I'll revise and write that Winn and Regine must be in-the-house.

A question for the Arcadians: have they been performing Broken Window?

Posted by RNRRENEGADE | May 7, 2007 9:13 AM

They all need a wardrobe designer...
T-shirts onstage=boring.

Funny (and true), since I was going to post about the severe lack of couture and aesthetics.

Or, as me & my own call it (that is, such awful clothing) Proletarian Chic.

But it ain't funky.

they look like grade schoolers.

owen pallett/final fantasy put on a GORGEOUS show!

Posted by rebecca | May 7, 2007 9:30 AM

Owen Pallett is Arcade Fire.

Does anyone know what time Beirut took the stage last night?

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2007 10:07 AM

thats a lot of white kids...

Posted by george harrison | May 7, 2007 10:07 AM

10:30 sharp

Posted by josh | May 7, 2007 10:22 AM

Incredible, incredible show. We saw a couple of the Arcade guys in the audience beforehand, and sure enough... wow. I didn't know Sufjan was around too though.

@those who say it's not Arcade Fire without Win and Regine: I know what you mean, but still, some important members of the Arcade Fire represented the band onstage, and it was awesome. Not everyone has to be there for it to rock. Jeremy Barnes wasn't with Beirut last night, but it was still Beirut.

@anonymous: they went onstage around 10:45.

Posted by Benjamin | May 7, 2007 10:31 AM

Even Jon Heder was onstage for the encore.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2007 10:31 AM

nice pics BV! more over at Fresh Bread

Posted by ryan freshbread | May 7, 2007 10:32 AM

@anonymous: yes, arcade's richard reed doubles as jon heder sometimes.

Posted by brooklyn heathen | May 7, 2007 10:42 AM

Can anyone tell me what time Final Fantasy was scheduled to play--and what time he actually played?

Posted by Greg | May 7, 2007 10:49 AM

"Anyone know what time Beirut went on last night?"

they were supposed to go on at 9:30, but went on at 10:30, so expect maybe 9:30, maybe 10:30.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2007 10:50 AM

just to clarify; Final Fantasy was scheduled to start at 9:30 and he was right on time. Beirut scheduled 10:30 and did so.

Amazing show. Too bad most of the crowd wasn't familiar with the material

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2007 10:55 AM

final fantasy went on at 9:30, beirut at 10:30. i assume it'll be the same tonight but you can call the bowery to confirm.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2007 10:57 AM

"just to clarify; Final Fantasy was scheduled to start at 9:30 and he was right on time. Beirut scheduled 10:30 and did so."

wrong. Final Fantasy was scheduled to go on at 8:30, but was pushed back to 9:30. He was right on the new time.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2007 11:00 AM

yeah, one of the more incredible shows i've seen in forever. great crowd, too. would go to tonight's show again if i could.

Posted by fek | May 7, 2007 11:05 AM

Look! indie rock mediocrity! Keep it coming I love it. I love 20 kids onstage. Little wonder we have a moron in the white house.

Looks fun to me, I guess you can't have a good time unless you're out seeing some once-in-five-years indie rock perfection?

Posted by sticks | May 7, 2007 11:19 AM

Show was really great with only one problem i could see. When did it become ok for yokels in the audience to just yell out whatever they felt or thought we were all there to hear not only the band but audience members having a conversation with the bands.
I mean if it was funny commentary or actually something smart i could get into it. We got instead "when is the new album coming out"?, I hope that was not you BV trying to get a leg up on the competition. Seriously though, please shut up when you are at a show or limit yourself to cheering or screaming. And to the annoying girl who kept talking to Zach, please get yourself a muzzle. Thank You.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2007 12:35 PM

re: anonymous

I really enjoyed "Can I take your virginity?" from one of the shrieking girls in the front (one of which was muzzle-girl).

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2007 12:43 PM

I really liked the show but did anyone else think that at times beirut and members of, acted a little cocky?

Posted by K | May 7, 2007 12:50 PM

Ticketmaster just released more tix for tomorrow night's show - snagged LLodge row A.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2007 1:01 PM

You can tickets for tonight and tomorrow's Arcade Fire show at the Palace now via Ticketbastard. Get 'em while you can.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2007 1:07 PM

K - Zach is always a little cocky. It's one of the few things that keep me from totally embracing Beirut, but I still love them.

Fek - I agree, the crowd was ok, but it was packed so tight that there was no room for dancing or just jumping. I hate having to stand still while listening to such an incredibly energetic group as Beirut.

I'm going to tonight's show as well, I'm going to try to get a little closer to the stage, where most dancing concert-goers seem to be.

Posted by Benjamin | May 7, 2007 1:49 PM

@Anonymous 12:35
WOW you are no fun. Trying to regulate what goes on at a show??? Damn. Guess you have never been to a punk or hardcore show. I am so glad I came of age in an era where the crowd actually rocked out and acted like they loved the band they were there to see, instead of standing still and cross armed.

Posted by oldskool | May 7, 2007 2:00 PM

@Benjamin:

Facing stage, I was in the left corner past the column against the wall, doin' the Billy Idol thing - Dancing With Myself. Found that you're never going to beat the NYC crowds, and fuck joining them, you just gotta dance your own dance. If they're going to be boring, so be it. Have fun tonight.

@K:

Considering the fact that Condon's showmanship has increased tenfold since they started, you take the good with the bad. I'm not telling you to swallow the Kool-Aid....but no double-standards: even the most gracious of bands gets cocky, I've seen a lot of it from unexpected places (TVOTR, Decemberists, Arcade Fire, et al). One thing I didn't jive with, however: someone shouted out "Postcards From Italy," and one of the guys on stage responds with something like "they're requesting the single, that's fucking trite." Was loud enough to be heard. I agree with the statement, I don't agree with the lack of decorum. THAT shit was trite.

Posted by fek | May 7, 2007 2:14 PM

K- I don't know if I found the BAND cocky, but I thought ZAC came off as a smug little douchebag. He's got quite the ego. Must have been all the hipsters licking his anus out. He needs to be taken down a few notches. Otherwise, I thought the show was pretty sweet.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2007 3:08 PM

Oh, I just read Fek's post... I didn't catch that comment one of the band member's made. So I take back my initial response. The BAND is made up of egotistical douchebags, too!

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2007 3:13 PM

@Anonymous 12:35:

I kinda agree with you. The one-on-one banter gets annoying, but the "new album" inquiry wasn't that bad. What was worse was after Zac answered "September," someone yelled out "Which label?!" I hope that was a joke.

Posted by Matt | May 7, 2007 3:18 PM

I'd like to just add that I hate and will always hate Final Douchebag because the dude continues to make a mockery out of the beloved video game franchise he ripped off and used to become famous with.

Posted by Nate | May 7, 2007 4:26 PM

we find muzzle girls annoying because we, as a generation/society, have overdosed on the superfluous idea of stardom. most of us take it upon ourselves to find new bands and such because we're in it for the music. if you love a band a like beirut, then: dance, applaud, cheer, be nice to your neighbors, sing along, but, for the most part, shut up otherwise. unless you've got something sincere to say like, "outstanding! bravo!"

because beirut is not punk rock or hardcore. we're not in it for angsty rebellion and nor are we in it for a dose of intellect (lack of exceptional genius is not necessarily medicore- i'm not into intellectual musical snobbery or technical superiority anyway). we're in it for decent popular music, and indie, by implication, is popular, i.e. of the people. but muzzle girls will always be around, so this is simply a rant in defense of the annoyance muzzle girls incite in some of us who love the music.

Posted by brooklyn heathen | May 7, 2007 4:28 PM

fyi..i found Zac very nice and down to earth. Spoke to him outside the bowery after the show..he even posed for a few pictures with my friend and I...wasn't cocky AT ALL.... and not that it matters, but he is so cute up close.
The members of the arcade fire, on the other hand were big asses. talk about cocky....

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2007 4:33 PM

the singer from Balkan Beat Box was also in the crowd.

it was such a fun show but it wouldn't be a new york indie hipster thread if everyone didn't find something to complain about. arcade fire showed up to play with them? well it wasn't the whole band so you're not impressed. there were 20+ people on stage having a lot of fun and playing together? mediocre bad geek show-offs. he was relaxed and funny and talked to the crowd? he's a cocky douchebag. someone occasionally yelled something less than witty? how dare they not stand there quietly. people didn't dance? they obviously don't love the band sufficiently. they didn't dress up? call the fashion police. etc. etc.
it's just pathetic...

the guy in the glasses yelling "arcade in the house" and doing hip hop jumps was so annoying!!!

Thank you very much, Katherine :)

The show was terrific without it (Broken Window) and I don't know how much better it could have gotten, even if they'd performed the song!

Thanks again,

Monday night's show was also excellent, though—not surprisingly, given what when down on Sunday—everyone looked a little hungover at the start. Nothing a few whiskeys couldn't fix... Zach and crew wound up doing five (six?) encores, including two while parading through the crowd. For a full review and partial set list, please see:

http://scoboco.blogspot.com/2007/05/beirut-at-bowery-ballroom.html

Posted by Scoboco | May 8, 2007 8:48 AM

yeah I thought Monday night's show was fabulous. I've seen Beirut three times previously (soundfix, northsix, and mccarren pool) and this was by far their best performance.

Posted by Anonymous | May 8, 2007 8:58 AM

i'm sick of bands parading through crowds. It's so contrived these days.

Posted by Anonymous | May 8, 2007 4:24 PM

Good show tonight at United Palace. That place is cool.

BV: a dig at Amy Winehouse, her "not stopping by," when she has obvious serious issues to deal with, including addication and emphysema?

Or were you simply referring to her 2007 NYC Highline appearances, before the Summerstage disappearance?

You certainly weren't referring to her joining the Stones at Isle of Wight.

And how can you say it's "Arcade Fire" in your headline, when neither Regine nor Win showed up?

Have a Shake Shake Burger on my T & E account, BV!
