Beth Ditto nude on the cover of NME

How would Lily Allen describe this cover?

Beth Ditto nude

"I spent so much of childhood trying to change, and I just got sick of it." [Beth Ditto]

Less professional semi-naked Beth Ditto shots here.

Beth Ditto & Kate Moss

Inside the issue Beth talks about Paris Hilton & Kate Moss

Yet one of the things Beth Ditto does gives a f*ck about, is body image. So much so, that Beth recently refused for The Gossip to play instores at Topshop, citing her dissatisfaction that there isn’t a clothes range available in her size. She even went as far as to offer to design clothes for them. She’s never claimed to promote her body size (“I’m just saying people should be empowered about who they are,” she tells us), yet it’s worth asking, does she feel a responsibility to pick a side in the size zero debate?

“Not at all,” says Beth, immediately. “Things are more complicated than that – there’s too many factors to pick a side. The older I get and the more models and designers I meet... sometimes models are naturally just thin. Like, that’s their size.”

When you talk about meeting models, do you mean Kate Moss?
“Kate is amazing,” purrs Beth. “I spent one night talking to her and she just said the most amazing things about bodies. At first I didn’t think I was going to like her, but she just turned up to one of our shows and said, ‘Do you know what I hate, Beth? When people tell my big girlfriends, ‘You have a beautiful face...’’ I mean, that’s a really radical concept.”

Do you not think Kate Moss actually has a responsibility to answer to the size debate, though?
“You can’t hate a person for dieting, and you can’t blame a person for feeling shit about themselves. You have to blame the machine that feeds it, the thing that makes people feel like that. There are lots of things that are part of that machine, and it’s too easy to lay the blame at the feet of women – men don’t know what it feels like to be a woman and be expected to look a particular way all the time. The Beckhams are part of the machine; Paris Hilton is part of the machine. There’s that thing Paris Hilton said about Lindsay Lohan – ‘You’re poor, ugly and fat’. It’s always women who are victims of that machine and the messages the machine gives out.”

But surely Kate Moss is that machine?
“I had those conversations with Kate,” says Beth, “and Kate agreed with me. She’s a smart person.”

Do you think she’s happy doing what she’s doing?
“I don’t know.”

But if she agreed with you...
“I have this thing where I don’t ever want to bad-mouth a woman. Except for Paris Hilton.” She laughs again. “Please tell me you saw that thing where she was crying in the newspapers, about her going to prison. It was so funny. I was laughing until I was crying.”

Tell me more about not wanting to bad-mouth women...
Beth speaks quietly again. “I pick and choose my battles. I think Condoleezza Rice is more of a goddamn shame than Kate Moss, and I think those are the things people should concentrate on. What I’m saying is that, if there’s anyone to blame for size zero, it’s not women. Blame the media. Blame gay men who work in the fashion industry who want these women as dolls.”

Why does she just bore the living shit out of me? And doesn't she get more coverage than necessary here on BV?

Posted by TavishD | May 30, 2007 12:53 PM

gross

Posted by Anonymous | May 30, 2007 12:56 PM

right now she's fat and famous, but when her fifteen minutes are up, which should be sometime in the middle of next month, she'll just be fat.

Posted by Anonymous | May 30, 2007 12:57 PM

so weird how big (no pun intended) she became in the UK

she's still a nobody here

Next up: Beth Ditto angling for that open co-host slot on The View.

Posted by Dick Hertz | May 30, 2007 1:05 PM

As much as some of you appear to be repelled by the photo, take a closer look at that cover - The Kaiser Chiefs interview Paul McCartney. Yeesh. Now that's repellant on all levels.

"You have to blame the machine that feeds it."

Funny, because Beth's popularity is spearheaded by a stridently cynical promotional campaign by the NME to strengthen its brand. People were polite about her weight until the NME used her to drum up controversy that would in increase the cultural impact of their magazine. Positing her as the top of their "cool list"/a sex symbol/the future of the rock star was a way to create media buzz around an obese woman whom the NME could claim as their starchild, under the guise of acceptance and progressive activism.

This is the same brand of chew-them-up-spit-them-out NME starmaking that they've always done, except with an even more contemptible element of taking a respected below-the-mainstream woman and using her obesity as a marketing ploy. Jesus, you wanna talk about "the machine" ...

Posted by CravinforClavin | May 30, 2007 1:22 PM

She is actually getting thiner

Posted by Eduardo | May 30, 2007 1:28 PM

C4C: You're assuming that obesity, per se, is harmful to one's health. In a recent news article about the finding that thin people who have fat internally are at risk for the health problems associated with external fat, there was this:

Experts have long known that fat, active people can be healthier than their skinny, inactive counterparts. "Normal-weight persons who are sedentary and unfit are at much higher risk for mortality than obese persons who are active and fit," said Dr. Steven Blair, an obesity expert at the University of South Carolina.

For example, despite their ripples of fat, super-sized Sumo wrestlers probably have a better metabolic profile than some of their slim, sedentary spectators, Bell said. That's because the wrestlers' fat is primarily stored under the skin, not streaking throughout their vital organs and muscles.

(Don't dismiss it because it appears on AOL News; it's an AP report.)

it never ceases to amaze me that hatred toward heavy people is completely acceptable in society (as is hating the poor). Shame.

also, to respond to Eduardo's post about health, your premise is misleading: obesity *is* harmful to one's health. How many over-weight elderly people do you see out there?

Posted by Steve-O | May 30, 2007 1:46 PM

who is this person anyway?

Posted by Anonymous | May 30, 2007 1:54 PM

"I had those conversations with Kate,” says Beth, “and Kate agreed with me. She’s a smart person.”

--Well if that isnt just a case of the blind leading the blind, i do not know what is. How does one idiot call another idiot smart.

“I have this thing where I don’t ever want to bad-mouth a woman. Except for Paris Hilton.” She laughs again. “Please tell me you saw that thing where she was crying in the newspapers, about her going to prison. It was so funny. I was laughing until I was crying.”

--ok so it's ok for you to make fun of Paris Hilton for being a stuck up rich spoiled brat idiot when you are just an obese idiot

Truth is though most of you dork loser guys on here would probably screw this pig in a ny minute cause its the only pussy you could get.

"Blame gay men who work in the fashion industry who want these women as dolls."

Nice one fatty.

Posted by Anonymous | May 30, 2007 1:57 PM

So its funny/unexpected because she's fat, right?

Cool. She's fat...look, a fat chick.

NME is lame.

Posted by Anonymous | May 30, 2007 2:05 PM

that gay men remark is rather offensive, especially given that beth, as part of the true colors tour, is supposed to be spreading a messgage of tolerance and accepatance, moving the public's perception of the gay community away from those very stereotypes.

not that i care that much, but it does show that beth is more likely that not, concerned only with self promotion and not anything more meaniful beyond that.

"it never ceases to amaze me that hatred toward heavy people is completely acceptable in society (as is hating the poor). Shame."

I don't think people hate "heavy" people or poor people. But lets not forget that being fat in voluntary behavior. You can prevent becoming heavy and if you choose not to, you choose the consequences.

Any chance when Morrissey comes to town, Beth with duet with him on a verison of "You're the One For Me Fatty"?

"also, to respond to Eduardo's post about health, your premise is misleading: obesity *is* harmful to one's health. How many over-weight elderly people do you see out there?"

I believe you meant my post, not Eduardo's.

I just posted a quote from an academic expert on obesity that says obesity, in and of itself, is NOT harmful to one's health. You, however, are only relying on conventional wisdom. And I see numerous overweight elderly people every day.

Posted by Ruud | May 30, 2007 2:24 PM

hahaha to the above Morrissey comment. That was hilarious.
Anyway, here is a much better picture to clense our palatte after seeing this rancid NME cover

Are you going to have the same debate every time Beth Ditto is mentioned?

Obesity is dangerous.
Inactivity is dangerous.
Over activity is dangerous.
Being thin does not guarantee you're healthy.
Being fat does not guarantee you're not healthy.

But, all other things being equal (lifestyle, predisposition, etc.) an obese person is more susceptible to certain health conditions than a thin one.

And please don't believe (or cite) every "scientific" article you read. Unfortunately, much scientific research is funded by people with vested interests and the people who sell beef will pay for research that says chicken causes cancer (for example). Statistics are easy to fudge (I should know).

mmmmmmm bacon.

Posted by Anonymous | May 30, 2007 3:26 PM

She's just pissed because no one even bothered to throw the "you've got a pretty face" line at her.

Posted by Anonymous | May 30, 2007 3:42 PM

ummm...regarding beth's supposed slight of gay people -- she is a lesbian herself.

Posted by Eric K/Sonic Parthenon | May 30, 2007 4:50 PM

Not only is she a petty, lumbering clod, she's plucked her eyebrows so heavily that even crackfiends roll their eyes at her. Imagine the scent of flopsweat on that behemoth!

the only reason beth ditto is so hue in the UK is b/c there's a british teen drama named SKins and the marketing tool for the show was this tailer
http://youtube.com/watch?v=09BRwe5jowA
and they played it non stop for 6 months and thety used Standing In the Way of Control and the show is a hit and so is the song...she is srsly just a gimic...its sad

Posted by Rinjo Njori | May 30, 2007 10:31 PM

she's a big girl, get over it. if she wants to be fat, it's no one's business but her own and if she feels sexy, great, if you don't like it, stop looking. listen to the music--her voice slays most.

Posted by twiggy | May 30, 2007 10:48 PM

But lets not forget that being fat in voluntary behavior. You can prevent becoming heavy and if you choose not to, you choose the consequences.

that is the dumbest fucking thing i have ever heard.

Posted by Danny's Poop Shoot | May 31, 2007 1:11 AM

why do peeps keep talking about beth's 15 minutes? she's so freaking talented! Her voice is incredible!! And being like 10 times the size of me, she could jump around the stage like a madwoman for 2 hours while i might last a few minutes. beth and the gossip = gooooood music!!

Posted by pretty girl | May 31, 2007 1:34 AM

To be fair- if it was any other woman in rock they would have been accused of exploiting women....

The NME is supposed to be a music magazine----it is not about having Naked/semi naked women on the cover, regardless of their size....

That interview told me nothing about the gossip or their music- nme has become a version of heat (the uk equivalent of the national enquirer) (in fact the editor said in an interview that is what he wanted to do)...it now has the least respect it has EVER had......

It is more or less a joke...and the fact that it has a strangelhold on new music in the uK is a tragedy....if you really want to find out about good new UK music try seeing what Plan B magazine have to say.....

Posted by ro | May 31, 2007 7:46 AM

I liked the first version of the Gossip when they were called Heart circa "Dreamboat Annie, "Little QUeen" and "Dogs and Butterfly"

love monger.

Posted by Anne Wilson | May 31, 2007 9:02 AM

she does not seem well spoken. i am not sure i agree with her argument about Paris Hilton & the Beckhams being "the machine" but not Kate Moss. what is the difference?

that said, i think the Gossip are a great band, especially in a live setting. and why do people love to be so anoymously mean? flopsweat? come on.

Posted by milan kucan | May 31, 2007 9:10 AM

Hey anon 11:15p.m. spoken like a true lazy fat ass.

Posted by Janice | May 31, 2007 9:22 AM

I don't know that much about Beth Ditto, and I admit that I have not read the entire interview, but (barring a birth disorder) doesn't personal resonsibity concerning health come into play at any point? I mean, c'mon! If you're fat, fine, but it's a shame to rub all that flabber in everyone's faces--especailly if you're not making healthy lifestyle choices. I'm talking about diet. I'm taking about physical activity. A wise person (gender, withheld) once told me that the only people in the world you can poke fun at are fat people, because they choose their lifestyle. Of course, this is barring some type of disorder--think elephantiasis, or something. So, Santa we can make fun of. And I'm thinking Beth Ditto ditto.

Posted by Jeff Rambert | May 31, 2007 4:41 PM

the whole thing brings to mind this troubling paradoxical dilemma....

what if you could have a threesome with Kate Moss but the other woman would be battling obesity?

officially speaking...the dude would hit it!

Posted by theDude | May 31, 2007 9:47 PM

I think Beth Ditto is HOT!!!

Posted by Anonymous | June 3, 2007 10:11 AM

I'd do the fat woman before Kate Moss.

Posted by Anonymous | June 3, 2007 10:52 AM

she's got a beautiful body.

Posted by anon. | June 3, 2007 7:47 PM

Beth is inadvertently promoting the destruction of the environment. You see. . . larger persons contribute to greater atmospheric carbon dioxide accumulation as a byproduct from the increased mitochondrial demand for oxygen than Paris Hilton types. I am willing to overlook it once the blame of "gay men in the fashion industry" is lifted!

Posted by Brian | June 4, 2007 8:14 PM

Ok, if you're going to play the "carbon card" then i have to be devil's advocate and point out that you gay men doing each other up the butt "contributes to greater atmospheric carbon dioxide accumulation as a byproduct from the increased mitochondrial demand for oxygen."

Posted by lovefattysandgays! | June 4, 2007 8:42 PM

I'm a homo that reduced my "take it up the butt" frequency from twice a day to twice a week, resulting in a booty carbons reduction of over 80%. "Top that!" Although I do design screenprints to drape on rail thin hipster coke-heads, so I guess Beth still looses.

ignorant bullshit. stop justifying discrimination, hatred and fear. people eat because they want to eat and enjoy it, they don't choose to be ridiculed because of it. stop treating humans like shit because of their life choices, they can do whatever they want to their own bodies. it doesn't effect you or anyone else.

Beth's disturbing nude cover shoot for NME magzine. http://collegecandy.com/buzz/3628 WARNING: Seriously view at your own risk... shes real fat

Posted by Stac | June 20, 2007 10:39 AM

well its like this,
if a thin women goes on the front of a magizine its classed as "sexy" so why any different for somone whos bigger?
no one in this world looks perfect and even if there is somone who looks perfect there personality is usally crap. and they get old and ugly anyway...
and its good people who are younger can look up to somone like beth ditto's
shes a pure egsample of how an indervidual can be beautiful by being just themselfs.
we werent made to all look the same

Go Beth! Sexy fat.. and fun, thumbs up to her i say

Posted by Sarah | June 21, 2007 5:59 PM

It's different when someone is bigger, because we're socialized to think it's disgusting.
Beth Ditto seems too caught up in herself. Her voice may be nice, but her body is a picture of excess. Gross.
I'm sick of people saying that "oh it's just genetics" when 95% of the time it's not. People choose to not excercise, and to over eat. It's their own doing.
Yes, sometimes medications, thyroid problems, or mental health issues contribute, but those are genuinely not the persons fault. The food you put into your mouth is.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2007 4:07 PM

I don't mind bigger girls at all, I love them!

But to be a slob? Beth looks terrible when she's not all dolled up for some photoshoot. She's always sweating and red in the face, she dresses like a blind hobo and to be honest, she's gone beyond curvy to just lumpish.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2007 11:07 AM

Everyone who has posted on here has been nothing but predictable.

NME counts on people like you.

They thank you as they roll around on piles of money with hookers.

Pull your heads out of your asses, and open your mind.

Posted by Anonymous | July 28, 2007 5:49 PM

I think you all need to calm down. I don't get why people make such a big deal of something that someone is doing or saying when it's not even effecting the criticisers. So what if she is contradicting herself, she's fat or a lesbian who is only doing it for self promotion. I don't see you lot making anything of your lives other than sitting on a damn computer moaning about someone who's got a whole lot more money than you. She has a pretty decent voice, not the best i must say. Now if beth was normal sized, these comments wouldn't even be made, you wouldn't go crazy and say Oh my god she's doing this for attention, only got this famous because of The skins series, because if she was normal sized, whatever that is, you would just turn a blind eye at her, and think nothing of it. But because she doesn't fit society and the way people HAVE to be, you're all going flaming mad.

Heres a tip for you

SHUT UP!

Posted by Anonymous | August 17, 2007 11:36 AM

I would fuck the shit out of her. Really love her body and i bet shes got an amazing pussy. To bad shes a lesbian

Posted by BBW lover | August 18, 2007 9:33 PM

Goddamn, I love her! She got the most beautiful voice and how she's on stage, it's awsome! She really don't give a shit 'bout what people think of her. I wish I got that self-confidence.
I really idolize this girl. <3

Posted by Mary | August 20, 2007 1:40 AM

why are you people so goddamn mean? not that I don't know its because you are really just pathetic yourselves---------

Posted by Anonymous | August 20, 2007 9:00 PM

This is the most pathetic argument. Most women look like Beth Ditto.

When you wind up in a marriage with a woman twice her size, you'll be eating your own cum, needledick.

Posted by LB | December 14, 2007 3:00 AM

You know what the sad thing is? Most women in the uk are overweight or are unhappy about their bodies. And most of you are laughing at this woman who loves her body the way it is, just make every other woman want to starve themselves. You're all dickheads. Every woman does not have massive (fake) boobs and a skinny waist, there is a variety of sizes, why should we all have to be skinny, at least beth still has her periods jeez!! when all you immature boys grow up and get married, youll realise that, yes your wife will put on weight after having kids, get stretchmarks, and will not be the skinny little waif you first met. Stop downing big girls, when one day you will probably be fat yourself. And i hope you do put on weight. Idiots.

Posted by Anonymous | April 3, 2008 8:38 AM

I like how some people say things like 'You can prevent becoming heavy and if you choose not to, you choose the consequences.' Is that really how easy it is? You may want to ask some really large people about their genetic code, their hormone distribution, their thyroid, etc. before you start spouting off about things that aren't always 'choices', unless of course you like the President of your country these last 7 years: then maybe you think you do have control over things like that.
