Brooklyn's Galapagos Art Space moving to Dumbo
new Galapagos

In December we asked, is Galapagos closing? To that the owner said NO WE ARE NOT. Today the times reports....
In a move that has greater symbolic significance than mere real estate hopscotch, Galapagos Art Space, the pioneering bar and performing arts space that helped put Williamsburg, Brooklyn, on the cultural map, is moving a few neighborhoods down the East River, to Dumbo.Galapagos, which has played host to a broad array of New York’s musicians, dancers, theater artists, performance artists, fine artists and burlesque dancers during its 12-year existence, is scheduled to move into the space, a 102-year-old, 10,000-square-foot former horse stable at 16 Main Street, in the spring or summer of 2008.....
.....“We’re doubling our size and halving our rent,” said Robert Elmes, who started Galapagos in 1995, when it opened in fits and starts on North Sixth Street, which at the time was notable mainly for the rancid smell of nearby meat-processing plants.....
....In Williamsburg, Galapagos Art Space will continue its full schedule until the weekend of June 17, with plans to operate intermittently throughout the summer..... [NY Times]

Whack. But I guess good they are moving to a better space? Whatever.
Will they put on Jehovah's Witness burlesque shows in DUMBO?

from the Galapagos site:
"We’ll have an interesting announcement about 70 North 6 Street very soon." (their current location)

St. Anns Warehouse is already a very under-used space in DUMBO. Will Galapagos work out?
What venues are left in Williamsburg, not counting the illegal Todd P ones? Luna Lounge? Does anyone go to LL?

"St. Anns Warehouse is already a very under-used space in DUMBO."
St. Anns may serve alcohol at its $50 events, but it is not a bar. Galapagos is a bar with fun entertainment. I think this is great.

i agree...good for them...id much rather see a show in dumbo anyways...
as for st. anns, ive only seen loose fur and the tindersticks there...its pricey but a great venue that needs more shows.

Good riddance, that place was an overpriced turd ranch anyway.

I agree Galapagos was overpriced and not that well-programmed, but I'm still sad to see yet another cultural venue flee the Burg. This time next year, all we'll have left are half-empty condos and NYU kids on every corner.

i wish union pool, pete's candy store, and enid's all moved to dumbo too...then you could nuke williamsburg once and for all.

Um, I go to Luna Lounge, in fact I'm going there again this Friday. Besides that there's still Union Pool & Pete's Candy Store, prob other venues too.
It sucks that Galapagos is moving, but I guess that's how it goes with NYC rent hikes (& Williamsburg is hardly alone in rent hikes, anyone heard of Tonic or CBGBs??? Just saying.)

It says "independent venue" on their web site, but Luna Lounge is a Clear Channel venue. The point is that independent businesses are vanishing.

Pete's Candy Store is in Greenpoint. Union Poll barely has shows, which is a shame because I like the back room.

Live Nation (no longer affiliated with Clear Channel) only books some of the shows at Luna Lounge but has no ownership stake in the bar/venue/building itself...and you dont have to book with LV if you dont want to..that being said ..I dont see a lot of great stuff listed at Luna Lounge..... I think the new North ^th soace will be open in Sept.

Hmm, if Pete's is in Greenpoint as you say, someone should tell Pete's to update their website since they seem to think they're in Williamsburg (not to mention they're in the 11211 zip code):
http://www.petescandystore.com
Personally I've always thought of Greenpoint as starting at Nassau Ave going north, hence the G train stop @ Nassau, but that's just my opinion.

If Live Nation pays for your advertising, you are not an independent venue.
And Live Nation certainly is affiliated with Clear Channel. It's a "spinoff". They are the largest concert promotion co. in the country. Who cares whether it's called Clear Channel or Live Nation. Either way- it's still the same thing.

im reading all these comments and alls i can think to myself is "what the fuck?"
does anyone know what they're talking about here? Pete's in Greenpoint? Galapagos overpriced? Luna Lounge as Live Nation? Who's making these absurd comments? im thinking someone who knows nothing of the neighborhood or the people that have planted their lifestyles around it to make what Williamsburg is/was and why it still remains the cultural model for music and the arts for most hip neighborhoods throughout this country.
yeah, i admit, things have changed. but stop complaining and do something about it. support what we still have here and contribute. but please, stop complaining, judging, and talking shit like you think you know what's up and just enjoy what is still offered here. the end.

what makes you think that people who comment here don't know what they are talking about and know nothing of the neighborhood?
If you don't see the point of these comments, then you SO obviously know nothing of the neighborhood.

I wonder how much longer Glasslands is going to stay around.
I hope this move means a better sounds system. The shows I saw at Galapagos during CMJ last year were dreadful.

anon 6:56 pm is another Luna Lounge mole. Rob?

Eh, funny- I remember Galapagos being the first sign that Williamsburg was over. Nothing fosters an art scene quite like the first bar to sell $8 drinks, and the harbinger for $600 apts going to $1200 in 5 years.
Though for a while, I was grateful that it functioned as the town's aquarium filter- sort of scooping up all the douchebags, and keeping them in one area. That worked for about 2 years.

"Galapagos Art Space, the pioneering bar and performing arts space that helped put Williamsburg, Brooklyn, on the cultural map, is moving a few neighborhoods down the East River, to Dumbo."
Please. Galapagos was the death knell of Williamsburg, a signifier of evil rich kid poseur gentrification. Even though the neighborhood had been ruined for years, and unwilling to pay the skyrocketing rents elsewhere (rent control is a mixed blessing), I can still get a small thrill of schadenfreude when yet another bunch of jackoffs lose their shirts.
Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2008 7:12 PM
^ What are you talking about? The new space is bigger, nicer, and in a better neighborhood. How is that "losing their shirts"?
