Franz Ferdinand posted the following message on MySpace:
Hi, just a quick message to let you know that we’re planning a couple of small shows in Glasgow and one in New York in the next few weeks. We’ll be trying out some new songs and inviting some other bands that we like to play with us. We’ll let you know the details in the next few days, hopefully see you there. No posts on how terrible the Secret Machines show was last night? I want my 25 bucks back. Way to stick it to the fans by not playing any old stuff. Another great band dies...

you are so wrong. what did you want? to hear the same version of Nowhere again for the 20th time?
it was nice to hear some evolution of their sound.

The show is not June 12 at Studio B. That is a lie.

Yeah Anon 4:16 is a twat loser. Secret Machines were awesome and loud as fuck last night. Who cares that they did not play their "hits" you loser. They rocked hard and sounded great.

Saw Franz Ferdinand for the first time at Northsix in '04 I think. I had no idea they were going to be what they are.

I agree with everyone on this thread. The Secret Machines show last night was truly bad. But only assholes get mad when a band debuts a ton of new material at the expense of old songs.
But yeah, the show was not good. I love this band-- both their albums have amazing songs (even if they aren't across the board top-notch) and they USED TO have an amazing live show.
But the new stuff is terrible: loud, boring, no subtlety at all. Sound = Weird, almost goth-heavy metal covers of the bottom 10% of the early Genesis catalog.
I mean, I'll give them a little time, since this was their first show w/o a founding member. But if this is ANY indication of where this band is going, I'm just not interested.

To Anon 6:58pm,
From what i could see before your post, the majority of posts on here thought the show was great. I was there as well and thought they sounded excellent. The new songs are far from the "almost goth-heavy metal covers of the bottom 10% of the early Genesis catalog" that you claim. The crowd seemed very into it as well. Don't believe this guy people, the show was great.

Haha so... when/where's the Franz show?

i totally agree w/ the general theme of this thread: the secret machines show was one of the worst shows i've ever attended. and the crowd around me clearly felt the same way. the new album's alright at best, but boring and tired-sounding.

is it sad that i've actually seen those dolls in real life?
they're in a cute little shop in glasgow.

ANON 3:05PM-you were obviously at a completely different show than most of us. The Secret Machines show at The Annex was great and the majority of the crowd was loving it. That's why when they left the stage the crowd stayed for at least 10 minutes applauding trying to get them to come back and play more.
Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2007 3:53 PM
or because they would have felt cheated from paying 25$ if they didn't come back
Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2007 3:55 PM
ANON 3:55pm-They played for an hour and 15 minutes when they went off. Hmm 25 dollars for 1 hour and 15 minutes at a tiny crawlspace of a club. I believe Amy Winehouse played the much bigger Highline Ballroom for more money and she played for 45 minutes. So im guessing you are wrong about anyone feeling cheated for that.

except i'd want the (now) shitty secret machines to play for 5 hours, play all their old songs, play a bunch of covers and give me a massage during a drum solo to think that it was worth 25$
Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2007 5:49 PM
w/ happy ending. otherwise no deal. not w/ that (now) shitty band. i was at the show, and like most people here agree that the band's better days are long gone.

the Glasgow secret shows are on 6/4 and 6/5, which means that the Franz NYC show will be some time between June 6 and June 14 (when Bonnaroo begins), since these gigs are Bonnaroo warm-up gigs, and it'd make more sense to have the NYC show closer to their US Bonnaroo date (thus after Glasgow).
remaining potential dates:
Bowery Ballroom: June 13
Mercury Lounge: June 10
Maxwell's: June 9, 10, 11
i predict June 13 at Bowery with some of those "In the City" bands supporting (Enter Shikari, The Rakes, Pigeon Detectives, Biffy Clyro, etc.), or maybe even merc lounge on the 10th if we're really lucky

Anyone who thinks the Secret Machines show was good at Highline is a fuckin' idiot. It was absolutely terrible.

Alex lives in Greenpoint actually.
