Dang it! Out of the country until August 6, day after Blonde Redhead! Double dang it!

Posted by Brian | May 17, 2007 1:29 PM

That's how I like it, FREE. Ted Leo & The Thermals looks like a killer.

Posted by Eduardo | May 17, 2007 1:32 PM

Man Man & Ghostland Observatory in one summer... now that's entertainment.

Posted by kde | May 17, 2007 1:42 PM

BV - where can we find the full list you had been compiling of all the outdoor shows this summer?

Posted by Anonymous | May 17, 2007 1:52 PM

ghostland observatory on my birthday? simply amazing.

Posted by eatsdirt | May 17, 2007 1:53 PM

looks great are they going to have funk and soul sunday again. I hope so it was great and there were probably only 100 people there.

Posted by Anonymous | May 17, 2007 1:56 PM

dan deacon is pretty terrible - fun music for the young new-age brooklyn pill poppers to dance to - but ultimately frivolous and silly music for any discerning music fan

Posted by Anonymous | May 17, 2007 1:58 PM

how do these shows work? do you need to pick up the free tickets? or do you just show up the day of the show?

Posted by Anonymous | May 17, 2007 2:01 PM

>>>>>>how do these shows work? do you need to pick up the free tickets? or do you just show up the day of the show?

you just show up.

I was at that funk soul day last year and there were far more than 100 folks. Williamsburg is not as white indie rock-filled as most people think. We luvs us some soul music. I hope they do it again this year.

"looks great are they going to have funk and soul sunday again. I hope so it was great and there were probably only 100 people there."

I agree, but even last year the sould bands were "hipster" soul bands like the Dansettes. The gypsy/eastern-european music (not fake stuff like Beirut) is pretty big locally, it would be great if they had one day. It's great music for a big outdoor venue.

I went to Studio B last night to check out Dan Deacon and see what all the hype was about.
Anon@1:58pm is right, DD is not reinventing music...in fact most of it is simply recycled breakbeats and synthpop with alot of yelping.
But the live show (actually more like wild-loft-party-turned-mini-rave) is a freaking hoot.
He had the kids dancing, jumping, shouting and sweating.
I can't wait to see what McCarren Pool is going to look like on a hot summer Sunday with this guy in charge.

illinios= boring

Posted by Anonymous | May 17, 2007 2:23 PM

I thought Illinois were great when they supported the Kooks last week ... lots of singing and guitar solo's on speaker stacks ... cliched? yes, but boring? I don't think so ... the guitarist left the stage by climbing the speakers and flipping himself onto the balcony!

Posted by froggy | May 17, 2007 2:36 PM

illinois used to be pretty good - i've seen them about 5 times now and each time has been significantly more bland and banal

Posted by Anonymous | May 17, 2007 2:43 PM

when i was 18 y.o. i joined a friend for a superchunk show not knowing being familiar w. their music. i then proceeded to get kicked in the head by stage divers, bruised in the ribs by the railing, etc...a fun show, all in all.

Someone go tell The Mighty Hannibal and Archie Bell that they're "hipster" soul performers.

blonde redhead + barcelona and leo + thermals is a 1-2 knockout for me.

Posted by Anonymous | May 17, 2007 4:02 PM

god edwina, no one cares that it's your birthday on the ghostland observatory show date. i'll miss your party again this year... on purpose.

his new recorded stuff is pretty phenomenal the 10 minute "Wham City" is a particularly standout. really catchy pop on top of an amalgam of Aphex Twin reminiscent electronica and live drumming. Goosebumps when I hear it!

Perhaps not revolutionary experimentalism, but miles creatively beyond and better than your average indie pop band, and way catchier and a ton more fun.

Are McCarren pool shows in the afternoon or at night?

I'm really keen to check out Dan Deacon but have tickets to Tortoise/Four Tet that night.

(sorry for the ignorance, i'm not a local, from australia)

Posted by James | May 17, 2007 6:04 PM

If only Dan Deacon and Man Man were playing at the same day, at the same time. Now that would be something to see.

Posted by Paul | May 17, 2007 7:14 PM

how old do you have to be to attend this event? (the blonde redhead preferably.)

Posted by Anonymous | May 17, 2007 8:05 PM

James>>>>>

you should be able to see Dan + Erase Errata and perhaps most of the headliner, octopus project....who, considering you are a tortoise fan, you'll likely love.

take a car service after the shows - you'll be to the bowery (assuming) in 15 minutes.

Posted by yowza! 7/8 is the date | May 17, 2007 8:15 PM

Cheers, yowza!

People who hated on Illinois...I am sorry....they're called q-tips. I swear if you get some and use them regularly, you hear amazing things.

Posted by Anonymous | May 18, 2007 11:31 AM

Wow...Dengue Fever sound really cool. Where are they from?

Posted by Anonymous | May 18, 2007 1:04 PM

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmm.............. Ghostland Observatory is the MOST OVERRATED crap out of Austin. No one here is too terribly fond of them, why are you? Check out Single Frame instead. They did it first.

The website has been updated, but only with the information already given:

Shows usually lasted from 3-7pm, or something like that. Can't quite remember, but they didn't go on too late.
