Paste highlights 40 music venues
The new issue of Paste Magazine selects "America’s 40 Best Music Venues".
To compile this list, Paste magazine readers nominated over 500 different venues at www.pastemagazine.com. In the end, Paste weighed these nominations according to history, setting, sound, character, comfort, atmosphere, vibrancy, uniqueness and their roles in helping launch careers. They didn't rank them - they just chose 40 and grouped them into regions. For the Northeast they picked:
- 9:30 Club, Washington, D.C.
- Allen Room at Lincoln Center, New York, NY
- Iron Horse Music Hall, Northampton, MA
- Club Passim, Cambridge, MA
- Bowery Ballroom, New York, NY
- Maxwell’s, Hoboken, NJ
- World Live Café, Philadelphia, PA
- The Living Room, New York, NY
- Space, Portland, ME

how did The Middle East in Cambridge, MA get overlooked?!
Posted by jason | May 29, 2007 3:20 PM
Parker Posey is my favorite music venue if you know what I'm saying.
Posted by MusicSnobbery | May 29, 2007 3:25 PM
The Middle East? Great history yes, but not a great place to see shows, especially downstairs.

The OLD 9:30 was classic.

Requirements for all magazine cover blurbs: must feature a "numbered" list. e.g. - "America's 40 best...", "100 Ways to...", "50 Exercises to...", "The Top 100...", "500 Reasons to stop publishing magazines", ad nauseum.

"nice to see SPACE get some love!"
Damn rights! It's our best venue.

They forgot the basement of Silent Barn.

Swedish Music Hall > Cafe Du Nord (feels like being in a cave)
Bimbo's > the Fillmore, however not as much of a legend
GAMH = #1 for sure...

The East Village Bathtub is clearly #1

You can put St. Andrew's Hall in Detroit on there.

OK, so it's not in the U.S. per se, but the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver should get an honorable mention.

I haven't read the article just yet, but if Joe's Pub isn't there, well, that just isn't fair!

Good call on the Allen Room. Probably the best venue in NYC. Would be my favorite if they booked more of the bands that I listen to.
I wonder how close Union Hall came to making the cut. Maybe a little too new for consideration.

first unitarian church - philly
Posted by r5 | May 29, 2007 5:03 PM
though a little top heavy with jamband stuff, The Fox Theatre in Boulder, CO is a pretty exceptional room. Just bigger than the Bowery, the Fox has insane sound and not a bad sight-line in the room. Pretty much exactly what you want. Bimbos in SF is a beautiful room with great sound as well.

world cafe? seriously? no one ever plays there.
first unitarian all the way. I like to be able to sit on the stage with the alphabet floor mat and poke my idols.
Posted by erica | May 29, 2007 6:24 PM
Thank god there isn't a House of Blues on this list. Glad to see Paste Magazine knows what kinda shithole brand House of Blues is.

I knew that Unitarianism was open-minded, but not to the point where they let you "poke" your idol onstage, atop an alphabet floor mat.
Talk about a Christian take on Twister!

Glad to see Western MA represented - gotta love the Iron Horse. :)

THE LOOP LOUNGE IN PASSAIC CLASSIC VENUE
Posted by Anonymous | May 29, 2007 11:37 PM
As a SPACE founder, I have to say we're pretty damn flattered to be included on this list. We'll be turning 5 this year so I think we're the youngster in this company. Thanks for the support!

The only reason the Troubadour and Cafe Largo were included was because someone at KCRW told Paste they were hip. Such pernicious lies.

No love for the Grog N' Tankard?
seriously tho, for all you people caught up in this stuff. After seeing a number of both amazing and terrible shows at both venues it really depends on 1) the band 2) the sound guy 3) the type of music 4) the crowd.
other than that... isn't there anyone with love for Iota?
Posted by fatkid | May 30, 2007 4:28 PM
Club Passim? I've been going to shows in Mass for years and never once been to Passim. The best venues in the Boston area are TT's, The Middle East (upstairs and downstairs), and The Paradise.

I am looking for venues for a wonderful Cuban artist restarting his career here in the US. We need both international and domesic venues. If anyone has any suggestions and can shoot a quick email to ilovetimba@gmail.com I'd appreciate it greatly..
Thanks!
