The Budos Band & other pics from Park Slope on Sunday

DOWNLOAD: The Budos Band - Chicago Falcon (MP3)

Unlike during the dance parade in Manhattan on Saturday, the sun was shining at the 5th Avenue Street Fair in Park Slope on Sunday (May 20, 2007). The annual Brooklyn festival runs down 5th Ave from Southpaw, past Union Hall, and ends right around the Lucky 13 Saloon. The bands playing in front of Southpaw this year were Miss Fairchild, The Real Live Show, and, the only one I saw - The Budos Band....

Somethin' Else Records, the shop owned by a member of the band Radio 4, was still open, but possibly not for long?

The Budos Band (MP3 above) have a record out on Daptone Records, and have members who play with (Sharon Jones &) The Dap Kings, and with Amy Winehouse.

More photos from the street fair - including ones of the Budos Band and their burlesque dancer, at my Flickr.

i didn't even realize the street fair was happening - and that's news to me about the store! ps Somethin' Else has a myspace too but it hasn't been updated much since I stopped working there - http://myspace.com/somethinelserecords

Something Else is/was a very sorry excuse for a record store in Brooklyn, considering the customers who may have had reason to shop there. Lousy selection!!

It's a familiar story I know, but the staff in Somethin' Else do slip into the snobby/rude stereotype of so many indie record stores. I'd go there more often if this wasn't the case.

Sadly, the owner told me a few days ago that Somethin' Else will be closing in 2 weeks. Someone bought the building and is looking to convert the commerical space and rent it out for much more than Somethin' Else is currently paying.

He said they may try and open up another store elsewhere. The shop will be missed, though. It was loved by those who frequented it.

I have to say, the people who worked there were generally pretty nice and helpful. But there never seemed to be a reason to WANT to go in there, other than to see if they A) had the new CD by the latest indie rawk sensation, or B) flip through their very meager used section for a possible gem. They never seemed to infuse the store with any stock that made you want to make multiple visits within a week or two. I guess when you're busy trying to make it as this generation's Clash (yes, I say that facetiously), you've got other things to spend your time on than searching for stock. When Holy Cow bit the big one, I was genuinely saddened. Somethin' Else, not so much.

I am shocked and sad about this announcement. I am a former Somethin Else employee and I can honestly say that when 5th ave was nothing we moved in there. Anthony and Suzanne started the store out of a small space in West Hempstead and to move it out to Brooklyn meant that it was a success. Although I moved out of Park Slope I would still visit once in a while and that the Music industry is now going down the toilet I was surprised they have lasted this long.

And about the attitude, How would you feel if someone came into your shop to buy discs and one of their friends would say " Don't buy that, I will burn a copy for you!" After hearing that 10 times I am sure you will cop an attitude. Now imagine hearing that 100 times!

Not to mention, they had a good run of bands playing there as well.

I hope they are able to do this somewhere else!

i talked to someone who worked there yesterday and they seemed pretty sure that they were going to find a new space, also on 5th and with a little more room to roam...they won't be gone for long.

hello-
this is Anthony Roman, owner of Somethin' Else. Yes, we are about to close and currently looking fo a new space. If we can find a space that works for us we will take it. We are looking to do something a bit bigger and better, and also a bit different but keep the spirit of the store alive. Whether or not we can find this on 5th avenue in Park slope is a whole other story.
For those of you who had nice things to say about somethin'else, thank you. The store brought us a lot of joy over the last eight years, and the outpouring of support from the community since the announcement of our closing has been genuinely touching.

Sure we had our problems and made our mistakes. But, we never set out to be anything other than a cool place for people to meet, buy some music and clothes and hang out and talk. If some people can't understand that, well, they'll probably be happy about the sushi restaurant that is coming in our place.

As soon as we have news it will be posted on our myspace page.

to be continued...
