Andrew Bird's sock monkey in Bellingham, WA - May 6, 2007 (CRED)

Something very important came out in Gothamist's interview with Andrew Bird this week...
Whenever I'm going to do an interview I always scan the fan sites to see what people are obsessing over. In your case, there seems to be a lot of message-board curiosity about where you get your socks. There are entire threads about this, titled things like "Dude, where does Bird get his socks?!", "I will ask him at the San Francisco show, if I can, directly after I ask him to marry me!" And "I don't want him to think that I only love him for his socks." So are they custom made or would you rather that remain a mystery?Andrew Bird's socks - SXSW 2004 (CRED)Andrew: Sometimes people give them to me, which is nice. Who doesn’t need a new pair of socks? We’re actually working on making our own socks instead of T-shirts. But honestly the best socks I’ve ever found in the most colorful and interesting patterns are Paul Smith. They’re pricey but they’re pretty beautiful socks. But I mix it up, you know I wear Sock Monkey socks sometimes. Have you ever seen those Sock Monkey kits? They’re good socks! But onstage I have admit I do pay a little more attention to my sock wear.
The interview by John Del Signore also reveals Andrew's thoughts on one small Brooklyn venue he visited recently...
We just played Union Hall and I thought that was a pretty great place. I just like how much work they put into those glass cases.Below you'll find a picture of Andrew's socks from that very show....

I have to say, the Bird show last evening trumped the Arcade Fire by a mile. My boyfriend, who is only a casual fan of both, marvelled, "Andrew Bird has more energy than the entire AF crew, he's funny, he plays to the crowd, and he's a better songwriter!"
It was the second time I'd seen him and I was happy to see him in a bigger venue (though still intimate), with more than just Dosh to support him musically, voice, whistling, violin, guitar and loops just as on-key as ever. A really superior performer.
Simple X... yum.

Does anyone know what pedal that is next to the two Line 6 DL-4's? I saw him last night and he had some crazy sub-octave generation going on. Wondering if that's the source of those glorious sounds.

Wow. Last night was just Beyond. He's really somehow - implausibly - growing more extraordinary with the addition of Ylvisaker. (Booking flight to Amsterdam...)

I'm bummed I missed this show, but I already had tickets to Deerhoof/Dirty Projectors both of which were great in their own right.

Better than AF???? Eeek. Blasphomy. I saw Bird a year ago at Bowery and he was great. Last night I was just bored and left early. Every song sounded the same (that's my reaction to the new cd too). Arcade Fire the week before was .... nearly a religious experience... Not sure how the two can be compared but..hell..to each their own.
The highlight last night was the opener, Joan as Policewoman. Class act, great band, great material. I want to see more of them...

The low end sounds are coming from the drummer, who is ocasionally playing a nord. That other pedal next to the looping stations spits the signal and sends it to the drummer, who controls the output.

RE: pedals
Have been wondering the same thing, and am on a similar quest for the beautiful cello sounds he makes with his violin. Not sure exactly what he uses, but I've had great luck with an EH MicroPOG.

How does he get that tube-distortion sound, I wonder?
