Awesome...both on the news that they're playing and in their anti-scalping techniques. I don't understand...Why can't more bands do this?
Posted by Drugs Delaney | May 2, 2007 3:23 PM
How is warsaw as far as venues go?
Whats the capacity?
Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2007 3:28 PM
warsaw is fucking horrible.
i'd rather see them at hammerstein
Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2007 3:29 PM
...and that they called it irving plaza.
Posted by david. | May 2, 2007 3:29 PM
Warsaw is WAY smaller than Hammerstein.
Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2007 3:32 PM
REALLY!? rather see them at Hammerstein? REALLY!?!
Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2007 3:34 PM
Great news. I also wish they would sell tickets to most shows this way (or will call only). The reason more bands do not do this is because promoters and bands like the fact that scalpers buy tickets. This way the shows sell out faster. In some cases they can add more shows. Wilco is guaranteed to sell out Warsaw fast even if they make people do pushups to buy tickets. Therefore they can do will call and be the cool band that cares about their fans.

the sound at warsaw is abyssmal.....why would you want to see anyone there? i'd rather see my favorite artist at the garden than at warsaw

How is Warsaw as a venue?
Is it bigger than Bowery?
Posted by Jay Bennett | May 2, 2007 3:41 PM
as a graphic designer I approve of the Polish beer selection at Warsaw
Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2007 3:42 PM
Warsaw isn't bad in terms of size (smaller than webster hall but bigger than the bowery?), but the sound can be a little muddy. Certainly NOWHERE near as cavernous as Hammerstein though. Also, there are Polish ladies selling sausage and beer.
Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2007 3:43 PM
So you can buy presale tickets online...but in the event that they get sold out, then the only way to buy tickets is in person on Saturday morning at the BO? Just want to make sure I understood this correctly
Posted by MBF | May 2, 2007 3:44 PM
holy shit, that new album is AOR.
Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2007 3:48 PM
Hahaha i love it. I posted when the hammerstein shows were on sale that they would be playing a small show in nyc as well. Glad i waited. Anyone saying warsaw is worse than hammerstein is amazingly dumb but hey enjoy your hammerstein show. Im gonna enjoy this one.
Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2007 3:59 PM
hey 3:59...how about i enjoy both? Jackass.

Warsaw is a very nice place. Unfortunately the sound is terrible. I am not a fan of the sound at Hammerstein or Roseland, but Warsaw's has to be the worst in New York. You can hahaha all you want. If what you care about is being close to the band in a nicer atmosphere, you'll have a better time at Warsaw. Those who care about the sound are definitely better off in Hammerstein. Sadly I'll be out of town for both shows. I'm speaking objectively.
Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2007 4:07 PM
seriously. that's dead on. sure, it's smaller, but warsaw has the worst sound in the city - bar none.
Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2007 4:10 PM
There is no way the sound at hammerstein is better than warsaw. That is just stupid and wrong. Yes the sound at warsaw is not as good as say Bowery or Mercury or Irving Plaza. It can get muddy at times. A guy i know who does sound for a lot of rock shows does not like when he has to work at warsaw but i can tell you he hates hammerstein even more. Last time i was at warsaw was for explosions in the sky and it sounded pretty good in there.
So i am gonna haha the previous poster. But yes by all means please everyone think warsaw's sound sucks and do not try and get tickets to the show. Thanks
Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2007 4:19 PM
Well, its wilco. They sound shitty anywhere they play.
{rim shot} Thanks folks! I'll be here all week.
Posted by funnyman wilcohater | May 2, 2007 4:23 PM
anyone know how much tickets will be?
I saw a show at the warsaw a year ago, it wasn't so bad... definately still worth seeing wilco play there. and I'd love to see them at a small venue, even if the sound is a little muddy.
Posted by shane | May 2, 2007 4:26 PM
Warsaw capacity is around 700, much MUCH less than Cavvernstein. The sound system is actually pretty good for the first 1/3 near the stage. The middle third is dubious, and the back third -well- that's where it sinks. If you can secure a spot close to the stage there are few complaint -of course most will already vie for that area for visual proximity.
Posted by jerry | May 2, 2007 4:41 PM
This way of selling tickets sucks. What happens when the ticket buyer cant make it last minute and wants to give these tickets to someone else? It will be really hard, if not impossible.
I got screwed once at the Mercury Lounge for a show when the guy who got the tickets 9and had them at will call) got sick day of show and we were told by this (mean) person who answered the phonne that we would not be able to enter without that person's credit card. Of course, he was sick in Queens and we were in the Bronx so we lost out on the show and our $$.
The same could happen here as well.
Posted by Loop | May 2, 2007 4:45 PM
the same thing is true of hammerstein though - the sound way back is a bit muddy, but up front its perfect....
i stood right in front for architecture in helsinki at warsaw and it was complete shit.
i actually wanted to go up to the sound guy during their opener and ask if he really even needed to be there. it's just so bad.
Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2007 4:56 PM
this sounds like the same method wilco used for their irving plaza show a couple of years ago.
Posted by eddy | May 2, 2007 5:02 PM
Loop--
yeah, those are valid concerns, but for a show that's going to sell out instantly like this, it is amazing. These tickets would no doubt otherwise go to blood-sucking scalpers, who would sell them for $200 a pop.
I am SOOOO happy about this ticket policy.
Posted by Renaldo | May 2, 2007 5:04 PM
red bank is where it's at. intimate seated venue (about the size of town hall), with great acoustics.
Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2007 5:09 PM
This is just not sustainable everywhere. Imagine the nightmare of a large venue checking everyone's ID at the door? Do you really want the great fun of airport security brought to your music venues?
The way it is now is not perfect but incredibly convenient.
Also - there are def ways around scalpers. You just need to take risks and have good timing.
Posted by Sebastian | May 2, 2007 5:17 PM
why even sell advanced tickets then? just have everyone line-up they day of the show.
either way, people are gonna have to wait a really long time to get into this show.
Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2007 5:24 PM
I saw the fun band Camera Obscura at Warsaw. The sound was good. I feel sorry for those who got tickets for Ham, they are the some of the dummest dummies ever.
Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2007 5:28 PM
I love how whenever a show gets announced people rush to ne the first to say how shitty the sound at the venue is. Fine, we get it, you think Warsaw's sound sucks. Which is the exact same thing you'd have said if this show had been announced at Webster Hall. Or Hammerstein Ballroom (which they are). Or Roseland. Or MSG. Fine with me. It'll make it easier for me to get up close to hear the shitty sound at Hammerstein and Warsaw.

I love how whenever a show gets announced people rush to be the first to say how shitty the sound at the venue is. Fine, we get it, you think Warsaw's sound sucks. Which is the exact same thing you'd have said if this 2nd show had been announced at Webster Hall. Or Hammerstein. Or Roseland. Or MSG. Fine with me. Don't come. It'll make it easier for me to get up close to hear the shitty sound at Hammerstein and Warsaw.
Posted by MattZ | May 2, 2007 5:31 PM
how early are people planning on getting to irving or warsaw to pick up tickets?
Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2007 5:57 PM
A few things. People DO NOT have to wait a long time to get into this show if it's organized right. I saw Rolling Stones at Beacon where they have checked everyone's and their friends' IDs. It took me less than 5 minutes to get in. If you'll go early to be up front, you're gonna have to wait anyway even if they don't check IDs.
I agree that music fans in NY are way too spoiled and complain about the sound at most venues. Webster Hall is one example. Most people say it's shit. I can hear the difference b/w the sounds at Bowery and Webster, but most shows I see at Webster still sound fine to me. It's better than most venues in this country and the ones I've been to overseas. If I'd like to see someone, I'd see them pretty much anywhere. However the sound at Warsaw and in parts of MSG arena that are far from the stage are unacceptable even to me.
Finally, it seems like the quality of BV readers seem to be dropping by the minute. Is this becoming a place for ages 15 and below? Calling people who bought tickets to see Wilco at Hammerstein "dummest dummies ever?" Please! I wish I could see them at Hammerstein. People with Hammerstein tix can easily sell theirs too if they wanted to. Not sure who the dummy is here.
Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2007 6:02 PM
ok have to chime in with some comments. There is a major difference in sound in many concert halls in nyc. Some are def deemed worthy to complain of and some others are not. MSG and Hammerstein suck sound wise no matter where you are at. You are deciving yourself by saying anything else otherwise. Even upfront it is terrible and lets not even begin talking about the intimacy factor. There is a different dynamic to these large halls and bands play to those dynamics. Bowery and Mercury you cannot question the sound. It is great at both places. Places such as Warsaw and Webster the sound is not the best but it is far and away better than the giant halls and you can still get the small show intimacy that is severely lacking in these big places. Especially when you consider the fact that the bands you love get so big, it is a must to go see them when they still play somewhere relatively small. As for red bank, yes it is nice but a 10 min drive to warsaw where the sound will be fine as opposed to an hour or so out there(including tolls) where it might be a little better suits me just perfectly. Also, I am not so sure the hammerstein dummies will be able to sell off those tickets that easily. Past experience tells me there will be a glut of tickets avail the night of that show. Btw, you dont have to get to a show so early to get upclose. With the right amount of "gumption" you can get as close as you want right before the band goes on.
Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2007 6:39 PM
Even though I can hear the differences in the sound system at venues like Bowery or Webster, I don't think it is enough to make me not go to a show. The sound system at Warsaw is especially bad. To be precise, the sound system and the room acoustics make a very bad combination.
The only way to hear decent sound at Warsaw is to go up front as possible, and get most of the sound from the amps and not the PA. But I'm an old fart that likes to stand in back drinking a cocktail (plus I am tall, so I see over everyone).
Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2007 6:48 PM
ok here's my opinion- Warsaw is like a high school gym/auditorium. To me, the chance to see WILCO in a high school gym/auditorium outweighs any of the (justified) negatives of the poor sound qualities. I'm going to Hammerstein- I hope to get tix for Warsaw. Both will be awesome in different ways. Everyone enjoy...

JUST TO BREAK UP THE MONOTONY OF WHINERS, I'LL CHIME IN WITH SOME ALL-CAP SHOUTING TO SAY "WILCO WILL ROCK MORE LIVE THAN ON THE NEW RELEASE".
THERE, I'VE SAID IT.
HEY WARSAW HAS GOOD CHEAP BEER AND GOOD SIGHTLINES - WHO CARES ABOUT THE LESS-THAN-IDEAL SOUND? WHEN DID Y'ALL START BECOMING RECORDING ENGINEERS? IT'S ONLY ROCK AND ROLL, FOLKS.

Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2007 11:23 PM
yes warsaw is gonna be kick ass.
hammerstein is gonna suck balls as always.
Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2007 11:38 PM
Just to echo the poster above who said it was no problem getting in to see the Stones at the Beacon, Springsteen has a nearly identical ticket policy for his arena shows (ID must be presented at the door), and the logistics of getting in are fine.
Oh, and the sound at MSG does NOT suck if the band has a good sound crew. I've seen my share of Garden shows where the sound is excellent.
Posted by Anonymous | May 2, 2007 11:59 PM
Warsaw: On the left wall (right of the stage) there is an opening that leads to the cafe space where they sell really cheap Polish sandwiches / slices w/ cheese, etc. Just don't position yourself by that opening because it gets incredibly noisy there. And way back is pretty bad too, esp. with the security folks and owners/friends of owners yapping away constantly.

That "gumption" of squirming up front right before the show starts and standing in front of people who've been securing a good spot for a long time is going to get you punched in the face.
I can't wait until it does. You're probably 6'2" and taking pictures the entire time.
Posted by Anonymous | May 3, 2007 8:00 AM
Height discrimination????..anyways, I think the whole experience at Warsaw is fun. No other venue serves the food they do and the polish beers are great. I think we're just a little too spoiled.
Posted by Anonymous | May 3, 2007 8:58 AM
^^^Ha, when you're a 5'3" chick you kind of give up on the notion of seeing much. If the sound is good, I'm happy, if I can actually see the band, that's icing on the cake. And yeah, something about shortness inevitably attracts 6'3" "gumption" man to stand directly in front of you. I try to take it in stride, but I'ma cut you if you do that at the Stripes show!
Posted by CD | May 3, 2007 10:27 AM
i can't wait for those sky blue sky guitar solos!! wilco rules!
Posted by Anonymous | May 3, 2007 10:56 AM
I love people who talk tough behind a computer screen. I am one of those people with "gumption" And im much shorter than 6'3". All i can say is if you punch me in the face you better make sure im knocked out cause If not, be prepared to get slammed back about 10 rows.
And CD, make sure you let me know what you are wearing at the stripes show so i can def stand right in front of you. The only thing you are cutting is a fart.

they were great at liberty lunch in austin in 1998 while working on summerteeth. they were great at the filmore in san francisco at the end of the summerteeth tour. jeff was great on the solo dates while they were working on yankee and they were great at the anderson theatre in LA on the yankee tour. but everything I've heard and seen since then has been tired. and I would just feel sorry for them at the warsaw, hammerstein, acl or bonnaroo. let the new fans have em.
I would like to thank you,
...for nothing at all.

Recently saw Wilco play in Brisbane, Australia. It was one of the most amazing gigs I've seen.
After missing out on tickets to Hammerstein Ballroom, I'm quite delighted to be able to see them again :D (if i can manage to get a ticket).

how much are the tickets going to be?
Posted by liz | May 8, 2007 10:09 PM
i agree with may 3rd, 12:18am poster.
a lot of you guys are a little TOO into sound.
it reminds me of people that complain that a leak doesn't sound good when it sounds VERY similar to the "good" version that's in what kbps.
i hate that the hammerstein show sold out so quickly and am more than excited that Wilco are playing Warsaw.
it's gonna be a great show.

yeah i'm wondering the same thing.

probably not. haha.

I'm a pessimist, so I'm just going to assume I'm going to crash and burn for the presale.... so what do people think: Irving or Warsaw on Saturday? How early are you thinking about going?
Posted by Anonymous | May 8, 2007 11:56 PM
i'm going to try and get tickets during the presale.
if i can't, i'm going as early as 7 or 8am to Irving Plaza.

so disappointed...i rushed to work, ignored everyone, got my coffee and my credit card out..open two firefox tabs, refreshing each at different intervals...at 10:00:05am got in to the order page. chose 2 tickets, hit continue...not enough tickets available..sigh..maybe if i had only gotten myself a ticket. spurned by unselfishness again.
anyone know how many will be available on saturday?
Posted by pj | May 9, 2007 10:26 AM
@ Chris/9:57am
I got Will Call too.
gotta print my receipt out the day of the show.
I'm pretty sure there wasn't a shipping option and doubt it, especially with all the strict policies they have in place to ensure there is no scalping going on.
Congrats on the presale tix!

Are people really planning to get in line Friday night? Ridiculous! I live right around the corner from Warsaw, and I'm trying to figure out what time I should stumble into line. I guess I'll be keeping an eye on how things develop throughout the night and early morning. If it's going to require being in line before 7am, maybe I should stay up and drink all night. Anybody want to trade off shifts of waiting in line and sleeping on my couch?
Posted by Broms | May 10, 2007 11:10 AM
first of all i think the capacity at warsaw is nowhere near 700 like someone said. id say 400 tops. count the heads. remember- no balcony. im not gonna bother with this one, not a big fan anyway.
second of all, warsaw sound is not bad, actually i think its one of the better sounding places because you have the nice high ceiling, nice reverb. you want to talk shitty sound, mention studio b, the ceiling is so low you practically hit your head on it if you jump, the place gives me claustrophobia, and results in a shitty, compressed sound. also i saw Disco Biscuits at Hammerstein, the sound gets progressively worse the closer you get to the stage. we were maybe 15 feet away from the stage and couldnt hear the drums at all (the pa is way up in the sky) the only way it sound good is if you stand back by the soundboard.
