SLINT cancels one of two NYC shows
First Morrissey, and now Slint....
Slint will no longer be playing the July 18th Don’t Look Back concert date at Webster Hall. Fear not, all tickets for that show can be swapped out for spots on the 17th, when they will still be performing Spiderland in its entirety.Poor Slint.

Morrissey cancels Saturday's NYC show @ MSG
Just a few posts ago I said I hoped Morrissey was able to play his show in NYC this weekend, and now...
Morrissey's concert at Madison Square Garden scheduled for tomorrow night the 30th of June has postponed due to illness. That really sucks. The singer was taken ill earlier this week 7 songs into his performance in Boston which forced the postponement of that show as well as shows in Northampton, Mass and Philadelphia.
The artist's representatives are currently in the process of working on securing rescheduled dates and hope to make an announcement on Monday July 2nd. In the meantime Morrissey's performance July 6th at PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel NJ is to proceed as planned.

"Two stage hands die after Rolling Stones Spain gig"
Sad news
MADRID (Reuters) - Two workers died on Friday after part of the set from a Rolling Stones concert collapsed on top of them as they were dismantling it, emergency services said.A third man was seriously injured after four people fell from a 10-metre (33 ft) structure that gave way as the team helped take it down after Thursday night's concert in Madrid. Levon Helm @ Summerstage, NYC - June 28, 2007 (by Sandwich!)

Is anyone going to see Bob Dylan at Jones Beach tonight? What about Rush on Monday?
Rodrigo y Gabriela and Vietnam for free in Central Park on Sunday might just qualify as the show of the weekend. JDH and Dave P are DJing too. It's really too bad that it's going up against Man Man, Illinois, Dengue Fever, and What Cheer Brigade at McCarren Pool which is also free. I hope for both of them that this rain lets up by then. Dengue Fever is also doing an in-store at Sound Fix on Sunday. (though is a show there even technically an "in-store" anymore?)
PS1 kicks things off in Long Island City this weekend with DFA.
Seymore Saves the World is the new band of ex-Tapes n Tapes bassist Shawn Neary. Take a look at their tour dates at MySpace and you'll notice they're visiting NYC this weekend.
The Stills and Malajube are playing shows at Maxwell's, and also in the park that Manu Chao just played.
Groove Collective, Ravi Coltrane, Craig Harris help Celebrate Brooklyn this weekend too. Ozomatli, Babylon Circus & DJ Joro Boro are at Summerstage earlier the same day.
Gang Gang Dance headline Bowery Ballroom Saturday night. They're also involved in the 77 drum Boredums thing that's coming up soon.
Morrissey isn't doing so well. Hopefully he makes it to MSG on Saturday.
The Fiery Furnaces tour is about to arrive. They'll be playing some new songs off their new album Widow City - out on Thrill Jockey Records in October. (man, they change labels a lot don't they?)
Although Cake Shop's website lists Saturday night's show as "JASON TRACHTENBURG and pals", I'm being told the show will be a full-on Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players "open rehersal", and "a chance to see something new and be witness to the development of some new concepts that are being developed for the Edinburgh Fringe in Aug. A lengthy Q and A session will also occur."
Langnorne Slim and others are playing a benefit for the Drew Goren memorial fund at Luna Lounge.
The Polyphonic Spree tour gets to Warsaw this weekend. Pharoahe Monch plays a late show at Highline Ballroom. There's comedy going on.
Although they were some of the displaced tenants, Sam Champion is not playing the Pizza Plus benefit at Southpaw on July 13th with Teenage Prayers and The Legendary Captain Greech + the Shrimp Shooters. Wait a minute - who are The Legendar Captain Greech + the Shrimp Shooters???
Sam Champion are for sure playing at South Street Seaport tonight though - with Ra Ra Rabbit........I mean...
Don't forget about Citysol, and Britta Persson too.
WHAT ELSE IS GOING ON? Wanna win a limited edition Black Lips/Yacht split 7-inch? Details below....

The limited edition 7-inch was produced by Fader Magazine and Southern Comfort, and is only available via contests and what not. You can not buy it, and there are only 500 in existence. Do you want to win one? E-mail BVCONTESTS@HOTMAIL.COM (subject: Lips Yacht) and let me know what the last show you went to see was. THREE winners will be picked at random on Tuesday July 3rd @ 5pm EST, and notified for their addresses.

Klaus Kinski's Comedy Canon (06/29/07) [The Ten]
The more I read the reviews and the more I rewatch the trailer, the more I'm beginning to think that former Statesmen David Wain and Ken Marino might have created a classic with their upcoming film THE TEN. The film is basically 10 short films about each of the ten commandments. Many film twats are quick to remark that this concept has been done already in Krzysztof Kieslowski's supreme masterpiece Dekalog, but being that this film is from the geniuses that brought you The State and Wet Hot American Summer, I can assure you that the approach in this film will be much different, and much, much, much, MUCH funnier.
The film will have its nationwide release on August 3rd with some festival dates (including a July 21 Hamptons Film Festival screening), but New Yorkers will have a chance to attend a big "An Evening of Comedy & Music Celebrating the Release of The Ten" in New York on August 2nd at the Blender Theater at Gramercy. The shinding will be hosted by director David Wain, and will feature Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter, Craig Wedren (a longtime State collaborator), Mr. Blue, Rashida Jones and Peter Salett (who is also playing The Living Room on July 18). Tickets to the event go on sale TODAY AT NOON.
Which reminds me, Michael Showalter's CD-taping shows at Union Hall are already sold out. More comedy shows that hopefully aren't sold out by the time you read this, BELOW....
The Ten Trailer - UNRATED version

6/30/07 7:00pm, Mo Pitkins: Flying Carpet Comedy: Nothing's finer than an early Saturday evening comedy show. This one features Reggie Watts, Rob Cantrell, Joe Mande, Brian Koppelman, Dan Soder, Mike O'Rourke, and Matt Ruby

Pharoahe Monch is fronting a live band this Friday (June 29 - 11:30pm) at Highline Ballroom in NYC. Black Milk, Polyrhythm Addicts, The Cool Kids, and DJ Ready Cee are opening. the photos of MANU CHAO & the rain in Prospect Park

The crazy thing is they confiscated all umbrellas at the door (almost all of them anyway). I was hoping to take a picture of all the umbrellas they had piled up by the entrance, but I forgot. Why they did that, I don't know.
Ends up there wasn't any rain for almost the entire concert - it felt like a miracle. Then like magic - it was magical I swear - it started coming down in buckets right as the encore kicked in ("King of the Bongo" I think?). Everyone went nuts - in a good way.
What made it even better was that right before the encore that Celebrate Brooklyn guy - the worst possible guy for the job - came out and told that crowd that due to "dangerous" thunderstorms about to come our way (cue: everyone in attendance BOOS at once, and then.... THUNDER...), Manu Chao would be allowed to come out and do one more song for us, but then we needed to all get home safely. He did not wish anyone luck finding their umbrella though.
Bigger pictures - especially of the crowd and rain, @ FLICKR, and one more photo and a bunch of comments HERE.
This show took place in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, NYC - a "Celbrate Brooklyn" "benefit" show - on June 27, 2007. It was the second night in a row, and the second year in a row.

Amanda Palmer & Beth Ditto duet (photos & video) +++++++++ a new GOSSIP song
the new Gossip song on MySpace is whatever, but this is pretty sweet...
Amanda Palmer, Beth Ditto (& Madame), NYC - June 21, 2007 (CRED)

It was one of those nights... that leaves you wondering, "How the hell did I end up here with Amanda Palmer and Beth Ditto and Madame singing Radiohead's 'Creep' complete with ukelele?" It started with the True Colors concert... which was *amazing*... right from the beginning with the Drag Queen Rockettes (of whom I knew 4!). I also particularly enjoyed The Dresden Dolls, The Gossip, Erasure and, of course, Cyndi Lauper. Margaret Cho was a highlight, too. Chris Tuttle had told me about the after party fundraiser for LifeBeat, so, I scooted over there and got to hang with him and Joe and Madame and Trai La Trash for a few hours... good times. :) [...says lisapodak]Unfortunately I don't have a video nearly as good as the last one I posted of Amanda doing 'Creep' by herself, but at least there's something.....

More pictures from the Radio City after-party (and the source of the last 4 photos) HERE. Beth Ditto sorta nude HERE. Backstage footage HERE.

Has anyone texted for tickets yet? + YO MAJESTY
a man ordering tickets in Central Park - date unknown

Since June 5th...
The Knitting Factory’s ticketing-by-text service is powered by the ShopText mobile commerce platform. With just a credit card, a text-enabled mobile phone and an email account, registration is simple. Whenever concertgoers see a Knitting Factory concert listing with a ShopText logo, they can purchase tickets directly from their mobile phone by simply texting the event’s unique show code to the number 467467. After checking out, the concertgoer receives a secret PIN to confirm all future purchases with a text message. Alternatively, a concertgoer can first register and create a secure ShopText account via online at www.shoptext.com. All transactions are completely secure. So for instance, if you wanted to get tickets to one of the Meat Puppets shows, you would use the code MEAT1 or MEAT2. If you wanted to see Yo Majesty on September 27th, then you would use the code YOMAJ.

JOHN VANDERSLICE & CLOUD CULT finally playing Bowery! +++++++++ 2007 Tour Dates
...but not together...
It's always a big deal for a band to play the Bowery Ballroom in NYC - either because it means they're starting to "get big", or because they're already big and they want to make some noise. It's also a great place to play - good sound, good sight lines, big enough to be comfortable in, but small enough to still feel like a small-venue-show.
Then there are the bands who seem "big", but never seem to break out of the smaller Mercury Lounge-Maxwell's-Southpaw-Knitting Factory thing. The only time they ever play somewhere as big at Bowery is when they're opening. Take touring-machine John Vanderslice for instance. He opened for Spoon at Bowery in 2002, and then again for Beulah in 2003. Tour after tour John comes back to NYC - always with someone good, but when headlining, it's always at the smaller venues - never at Bowery.
John's most recent touring partner St. Vincent already announced a headlining show at Bowery, and I think it goes without saying that his 2004 opener Sufjan Stevens went on to play a few bigger shows.
Well, FINALLY it's John's turn - Tickets go on sale Friday for John Vanderslice @ Bowery Ballroom on September 26th. And finally it's also Cloud Cult's turn - same phenomena, and now the same venue in the same month - tickets also go on sale Friday for Cloud Cult's show on September 8th.

Klaus Kinski's Comedy Canon (06/27/07) [God's Pottery]
God's Pottery

The big news around town (or, in my brain at least) is the fact that Christian folk duo God's Pottery is ready to unleash a new 1-hour show onto us Godless, sinful New Yorkers before heading off to Canada and Scotland to spread fellowship. You see, last summer they put on several benefit shows known as The Concert For LaVert. The success of those shows made them realize they were doing mankind a huge disservice by helping only one soul at a time. To remedy this, they bring us God's Pottery Saves The World. In this new show, the boys take on more global issues like adoption, drug addiction, and Africa in an effort to save all mankind through the power of song, true belief, and a PowerPoint™ presentation.
New York is entitled to three performances only before they take on the world. They're at the UCB Theatre, and you better make reservations now, or else be damned to swelter in anquish in the stand-by line

MODEST MOUSE moving to McCarren Pool + WIN tix to MUSE
Dad, what the hell?

Kid 4077 - otherwise known as Nile Marr, the 15-year-old son of Smiths legend Johnny Marr - took to the stage at Bar Amp in Sale for his first live solo performance. Meanwhile his dad's latest band Modest Mouse - who performed at Manchester's Ritz earlier this week - were performing in Barcelona.I have bad news for those hoping to see Modest Mouse & Clipse on August 8th. Better yet - I have bad news for those who didn't get tickets to see Beastie Boys at Summerstage because they thought they were seeing Modest Mouse with Band of Horses in Keyspan Park. The August 8th show has been postponed exactly one month, and moved: Modest Mouse is now playing McCarren Pool on September 8th. Love as Laughter are still opening, but Band of Horses and Clipse are up in the air.Modest teenager Nile has said he is influenced more by Modest Mouse than by The Smiths because they were before his time. [Manchester Evening News - June 2, 2007]
Now Band of Horses' only upcoming NYC date is the Hiro Ballroom thing (where Ryan Adams played last night).
Muse is still playing MSG on August 6th. Want to win a pair of tickets? E-mail BVCONTESTS@HOTMAIL.COM (subject: MUSE), and tell me if I should finish posting Andrew's Bonnaroo coverage now that Bonnaroo was so long ago. One winner will be picked at ramdom, and contacted, on Monday July 2nd, 2007. Your email will not be shared with anyone.

I went to Wilco last night. It was a 2 hour and 20 minute set (the only show on the tour without a curfew said Jeff) by by one of the most talented bands I've had the pleasure of watching so up-close in a while (I mean Bad Brains was great, but Earl Hudson is no Glenn Kotche). If only our government could learn to operate a little bit more like Wilco. I say Jeff Tweedy for president.

waiting for Paul (McCartney outside Amoeba)
DOWNLOAD: The Swayback - I'm Waiting for the Man (VU cover) (MP3)

According to the first two people in line, this is the second wave of fans looking to score a wristband to get into the Paul McCartney in-store. Amoeba staff already sent a group away after giving out the allotted number of wristbands. This photo was taken around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Wristbands for the in-store, which is set for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, were supposed to be handed out starting at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. The people here are either waiting for another batch of wristbands or plan to sleep on the ground just in case Amoeba decides to let more people inside for the performance. Bad Brains on a Rocks Off concert cruise, NYC - pics
I ended up on the boat twice in a few days - Friday was The Weakerthans, and then last night (Monday June 25, 2007) was Bad Brains...

Their Beastie Boys-produced new album is out today (the same day as the Beastie Boys own album). You can stream it at their MySpace or at AOL. More below....
(Crazy?) H.R. tried preaching peace and love (and no moshing) to the crowd. At one point he said "the boxing ring is over there", which he them followed with the less clear "the black hole is over there" and "the bottomless pit is over there". It didn't matter. The boat was going nuts.....

With some fast action and team work, the falling ceiling ended up being no big deal...

Darryl Jenifer forgot to specify ceiling height in his rider...

Dr. Know

H.R. also pulled a few flaky moves like not singing during a couple of songs, but all in all it was a tight set mixing most of their classic hardcore and reggae tracks with some new stuff - I don't think anyone had any complaints. It was much better than that first night at CBGB for sure.
The day before they played the School of Rock Festival in NJ. A bunch of people on the boat said they were tight at that as well.
John Joseph and Mackie from Cro Mags, Carl Porcaro from Killing Time/Raw Deal, and Brendan from SFA and CBGB fame were spotted in the crowd.

The Bees - 2 NYC shows (1 FREE w/ Thile & Wainwright)

Tonight's free "Living Room" concert at the World Financial Center in NYC is full of familiar names...
Martha Wainwright, Chris Thile (from Nickel Creek), Jim Campilongo, Ari Hest and The Bees come together for this unique concert of alums from The Living Room’s venerable stage. As one of NYC’s musical landmarks, the club has become a venue for the best and brightest singer/songwriters.You've got a Wainwright, a member of Nickel Creek, a popular guitarist who is in the band The Little Willies with Norah Jones, that Ari Hest guy, and.....The Bees. The Bees (from Nashville. - not the U.K.) are pretty new to me - "pretty" new because actually one of my friends has been urging me to go see them with him for the past few weeks - if not tonight (June 26) at the free "Living Room show", then at the actual Living Room tomorrow (their only two tour dates).
Don't confuse them with the UK band with the same name who played Glastonbury this weekend, or with the actual insects, or with one of the many other bands with "bee" in their name. Their latest album "High Society" is like a soft rock (in a good way) record out of the 70's that is so pleasant, it's kind of impossible not to like. They've been compared to James Taylor, Jackson Browne, The Eagles, The Beach Boys, and Van Morrison. One of the highlights on "the album is the song "Imaginary Girl" - Music For Robots agrees. Listen at MySpace.

The Weakerthans on a Rocks Off concert cruise, NYC - pics
DOWNLOAD: The Weakerthans - Psalm for The Elks Lodge Last Call (MP3)
"Reunion Tour is the title of the fourth studio album by The Weakerthans, scheduled for release on September 25th, 2007 in the USA and a day earlier in Canada." [Wikipedia]

As I started to say the other day, the view from the Rocks Off boat cruises is great - you're really sailing on a boat around Manhattan. The Temptress - the larger of the two concert boats - sails from 41 St and West Side, and goes down all the way to the Statue of Liberty. The cruises are about 3-hours long. The band usually plays for about half that time. The rest of the time (or the whole time if you want to) you can be outside or looking out a window, or drinking (expensive drinks), or whatever.
As a big fan of the Weakerthans, I thought the Weakerthans show was super-duper. The set list was full of all the old hits and a bunch of new stuff off the new album (see above). I have a terrible memory when it comes to song names, set lists - even album titles...so I would love to list out all the songs, and especially name the one that I love and everyone sang along to at the end of the three-turned-four-song encore, but I'm too dumb, so.... More pics below....

This show was Friday, June 22, 2007.

Wilco played Hammerstein Ballroom
Wilco played their first of two NYC shows last night.
Wilco @ Hammerstein Ballroom, NYC - June 25, 2007 (CRED)

Great show at the Hammerstein Ballroom last night from the best live band in the world, even with a Molly Ringwald wannabe wedging her way in front of me and then making out with her boyfriend (who tragically was neither Blaine McDonnagh nor Jake Ryan) for the duration show. [Fidgeting Wildly]What did you think of the show? (farfegnugen?) If you're into FLAC, nyctaper has the show for download already. How were Low? Tonight the show is at Warsaw.
The Beastie Boys are playing Hammerstein Ballroom too.

www.ticketmaster.com/event/1C003ED2B386AF46As described before these will be in smaller spots, more exclusive, more intimate. this will be more like quality time, our time, just you and the band sitting by a fire on a tropical beach late at night being serenaded with love songs. these shows are for people that are into our weird stuff. Some songs will have vocals, others will be instrumental. Already here in Europe, people have called us liars for playing songs with vocals during our so called "instrumental" shows, so be it. We lie and are proud of it. Anyways, if you'd like to come to one of these shows, then dress to impress, wear a suit, a tie, a dress, your granma's broach or whatever you feel good in... BUT PLEASE leave your cargo shorts, birkenstocks and t-shirts at home, this is not that kind of party.

GLASTONBURY (Reuters) - Rivers of mud and driving rain frustrated fans trying to leave Glastonbury on Monday after three days of music, dance and poetry at the world's biggest greenfield music and arts festival.Thousands of festival-goers, who frolicked in mud over three days and braved torrential rain to see rock godfathers The Who close out Glastonbury on Sunday, struggled to take down tents, pack up sodden clothes and trudge to the exits.
Student Nicky Salmon, who said she had grooved at Glastonbury's Dance Village no matter what the weather, was now grimly determined to face the epic journey home.
"I am not worried about leaving because of the organization behind the event, but the mud will make it a very long process," she said.
Even Welsh diva Shirley Bassey found that, although Glastonbury's weather was not a showstopper, it could snarl your plans to get home smoothly.
The bad weather forced Bassey's helicopter to land in a school field late on Sunday as she was flying home after electrifying the crowd of almost 180,000 attending the festival in southwest England, the BBC reported.
Bassey, known for her powerful voice and James Bond theme songs, and dressed in a sequined pink dress, belted out a set that included Bond theme "Goldfinger," "Big Spender" and "The Lady is a Tramp" to riotous applause.
Collingwood College principal Jerry Oddie said on Monday that bad weather made the school field the best landing site.
Caretakers let Bassey out of the locked grounds in the early evening and she popped into the home of a resident in the town for a cup of tea and a chance to freshen up.
"The weather here was terrible last night and I suppose the pilot took one look at our school field, which is very big, and decided to put down there," Oddie said.
CHURNED MUD
The green meadows of Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis's farm have been turned into a sea of churned mud on which an army of revelers frantically wrestled with tent pegs and poles while brightly colored tents flapped in the rain.
Many are expected to abandon their camping gear after a call from festival organizers and charity Global Hand, who plan to clean up any abandoned gear and donate it to those in need across the world as part of their Give Me Shelter campaign.
Tractors came out in force to tug some of the 40,000 cars that sank into the mud while their owners partied to the sounds of such bands as the Manic Street Preachers, Kaiser Chiefs, American indie rock kings The Killers, Iggy Pop and many more over three days.
revelers in snarled traffic around the festival will still have Glastonbury's last night ringing in their ears after a storming performance by The Who in heavy rain.
Original Who members Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey, accompanied by drummer Zak Starkey and bassist Pino Palladino, ran through hits from "My Generation" and "Pinball Wizard" to Townshend's anthem of political disillusion "Won't Get Fooled Again."
As they sang songs spanning their 40-year career, a screen at the back of the stage showed images from the 1960s and 1970s
"It may be muddy, it may be wet but you were fantastic!" Daltrey shouted at the end as he embraced Townshend.
Earlier, the Manic Street Preachers were joined during their set by singer Nina Persson from Sweden's The Cardigans for their hit song "You're Love Alone Is not Enough."
As the sun set on the mud-covered but ecstatic crowd, the Kaiser Chiefs confirmed their reputation as one of Britain's most popular performing bands, earning a frenzied response with hits such as "I Predict a Riot" and "Ruby."
Tractors spread straw and woodchips as paths became harder to negotiate, but most festival-goers in brightly colored ponchos and rubber Wellington boots danced undaunted.
"It's gone very well in spite of the rain, in spite of the mud," festival founder Michael Eavis said on Sunday.
"The show compensates for the weather ... the sun's not everything."
More than 1,200 people had been injured by Sunday, mostly with sprains and bruises from slipping in the mud at the farm which first held a small, hippy music festival in 1970.
organizers said the flooding would have been much worse without the new 100,000 pound ($199,000) drainage system and other precautions installed by 71-year-old Eavis. [Reuters]

more details on the Boredoms 77 Drum ('Boadrum')

More details on the Boredoms 77 Drummer thing happening in Brooklyn Bridge Park on 7/7/7 have emerged. According to The Daily Swarm,
The gates will open at 4:00 PM, and the show features performances by First Nation and Soft Circle and DJ sets from Gang Gang Dance before the 77-minute 77BOADRUM performance takes place just before sunset. Admission is free, but an RSVP is required. Full details, directions, and RSVP information will be available at www.viceland.com/77boadrum soon. The performance’s 77 full 5-piece, 3 cymbal drum kits will be arranged in a circular pattern, spiraling out from the center like a coiled snake, where the Boredoms’ own drum kits and Eye’s electronic instruments will sit atop a raised platform. Joining the Boredoms will be 74 additional drummers, 10 of whom will serve as drum leaders and cue the rest.
The volunteer army of drummers represent many of the best players in New York City’s avant/experimental underground and were selected by the event’s music director Hisham Bharoocha. They come from a diverse group of bands and musicians who have drawn influence and inspiration from the Boredoms throughout the group’s 20-year career, including Hugo Burnham of Gang of Four, Tim Dewit and Lizzi Bougatsos of Gang Gang Dance, Andrew W.K., David Grubbs, Hart Mingus of Negative Approach, Matthias Schulz of Holy Fuck, and members of Aa, Crash Worship, God Is My Co-Pilot, Sunburned Hand of the Man, Oneida, Excepter, Antietam, Dymaxion, Panthers, and many others. The full line-up of drummers will be finalized this week.

Bloc Party playing Theater @ MSG - Fall Tour after ACL?
DOWNLOAD: Smoosh - This Modern Love (Bloc Party cover) (MP3) (VIA)
Bloc Party @ Glastonbury 2007 (CRED)

Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke has a secret confession to his army of supporters - he doesn't like music festivals because they remind him of when he was at school. The British rocker's band performed at the Glastonbury festival yesterday, and will be headlining a number of shows around Europe and America over the summer.Bloc Party had to cancel last time they were supposed to play the Theater at Madison Square Garden in NYC. They try it again on October 3rd - not long after they play Austin City Limits & a show in Toronto. A fan club presale starts Tuesday. More dates surely TBA soon. All known dates below....But he doesn't find the experience being backstage at festivals very enjoyable.
He says: "It's like being at a school reunion with people you know the faces of but don't really know at all." [Starpulse]

pictures from Glastonbury 2007 - it was wet & muddy
Pete Doherty

Kate Moss

"This weekend saw the Glastonbury Festival taking place but it also saw one of the wettest weekends that we’ve seen recently - it was p*ssing down quite a lot of the time. The result was that the Glastonbury site at Pilton, Somerset once again turned into a bit of a quagmire with ankle deep mud in many places. That however didn’t stop about 170,000 people enjoying all the music and other events on offer on the various stages throughout the site and there was something for everyone from all the latest hot bands to long-established acts like The Who – headliners on Sunday night." [Sonic State]
Iggy Pop

Bruce Willis?

Paul Weller

Former Jam and Style Council founder Paul Weller played a career-spanning set on Glastonbury's main Pyramid stage last night (June 23).Playing for over an hour, Weller kicked off the back catalogue guitar fest with 'Peacock Suit' from his '97 album 'Heavy Soul' and 'Into Tomorrow' from his debut solo album.
Highlight of the set was an amazing 'Wild Wood' for which the sun briefly shone over the Pyramid audience who were standing knee deep in a muddy quagmire.
The Modfather also treated fans to three classic Jam songs, 'Thick As Thieves', 'Running On The Spot,' and the set closer of 'Town Called Malice.' [Uncut]

"A 26-year-old man has died in Yeovil District Hospital after a suspected drugs overdose at the Glastonbury Festival at Worthy Farm in Somerset. The man, believed to be from the West Midlands, was found unconscious by festival staff in the Park Farm area of the site early on Saturday." [BBC]

Jana Hunter & Castanets gear stolen in AZ
The Castanets wrote:
Here's a message from Jana regarding yesterdays JH/Nets gear theft with some info on a Paypal account she's set up to hopefully replace some gear in the near or far future. Said information can be found at the end of the message that many of you have already read. Thanks to everyone who has sent along a kind word in the last 24 hours. It's awesome to know you all are around. Good times and living to you.Continued below...
"This message was mailed and posted a couple days ago in various places, and i've added something at the end for those inclined to help out.Jana Hunter - 2007 Tour DatesSo, the story is, last night (Friday June 22) we played in tucson at solar culture.
afterward, we loaded our stuff up, went downtown, had a drink, and
went to a house to crash on the floor. en route, we damaged a door,
making it such that the door won't close and such that eventually,
before we return the vehicle to the rental company, we'll have to pay
on the order of 2 grand to replace the door.seeing as how we had an unsecured vehicle, ray (castanets) slept in
the van. sometime during the night, some brave fuck(s) very quietly
opened the back door and took what they could carry. we assume their
were more than one of them given all the shit they managed to walk
away with. we're gathering what serial numbers we can, but in the
meantime, here's a rudimentary list:JH gear-

slides/cablesall this after we had to fly our friend/drummer to the airport
yesterday morning so he could go to the hospital. pretty big bummer
all around.since that message was sent out, a lot of kind folks have written to
ray and i asking with very kind words of sympathy and offers of help.
given that we don't expect to see our gear return to us and therefore
really could use the help, we've decided to set up a paypal account
and ask that whomoever is so inclined make a small donation to help
alleviate the costs of replacing our equipment. in order to accept
these donations, we have with the email address
mutualincarnation@gmail.com. if these folks are feeling especially
generous, we'd also ask that they donate from their bank accounts or
paypal accounts so that we can avoid paying fees on the donations.we're in the process of assessing how much we'll need to replace our
equipment, but in the event that we receive more than we need, we
plan to pass on whatever is left over to a charity or charities.thanks for reading,

Bad Brains are playing The School of Rock Festival in Asbury Park, NJ today (June 24). Tomorrow is their sold out NYC concert cruise aboard The Temptress. I rode the Temptress just this past Friday for the also-sold-out Weakerthans show which also the first show of the Rocks Off season. Not only were the Weakerthans great - so was the weather and the view. Here are two pictures I took off the side of the boat:

More, and larger, photos @ my Flickr.
Do you want to see Bad Brains on the boat on Monday (June 25), but don't have tickets? Now you have one more chance. I have one pair of tickets to give away, and I'm going to split that pair in half - so instead of one prize, I now have two. TheDeathSet in Baltimore (CRED)

Now that I finally got the Best Fwends post out there, it's finally time for the one about one of their friends - another Todd-P-Baltimore-Wham-City-Dan Deacon-Spank-Rock-Punk band that I've been getting pretty excited about lately - THE DEATH SET.
TheDeathSet @ Glasslands Gallery, Brooklyn, NY - May 25, 2007 (CRED)

This is also my chance to finally bring up the water balloon incident...
Last Friday was a show at Glasslands put on by Bikes In The Kitchen. It was a pretty great line-up, with Pterodactyl, Team Robespierre, Best Fwends, and theDeathset. The show was a sweaty good time (very sweaty, perspiration was condensing on the metal roof and occasionally dripping down on the crowd), until a random tragedy hit right at the start of Deathset's set. Some girls thought it would be funny to throw water balloons down on the crowd from the balcony. And it was funny. Until one of them, for whatever possible reason, decided to start throwing them past the band at the back of the stage where all of the amps/speakers/cables/sound equipment was.....[Suckapants on May 28, 2007]..........
....Meanwhile "Fuck you you fucking fuck" girl decides instead of simply giving me her details it would be a better idea to call the police after first trying to fight me all the time me thinking how ridiculous it actually is that my first fight will be with a girl. Luckily peoples pull her off. So in summary, this girl is not only an imbecile and an idiot, she is also a narc, causing the party to end. The police come and side with me after they hear the story and I tell them I don't want her to be arrested and they advise me to get an attorney which I don't have the first clue about and obviously being in a touring band can not afford. [TheDeathSet - June 4, 2007]The Death Set have a new (twelve song) EP out this week. It features remixes by Dan Deacon and Bonde Do Role. Tonight (June 22, 2007) and tomorrow they play shows in NYC followed by a whole bunch more shows all over the place. Tonight is going to be especially nuts because they're on a bill with Matt and Kim and Parts and Labor - Above the Auto Parts Store....

BEIRUT - new album & 2007 Tour Dates
Did anyone notice a member of Beirut playing a horn with The Citizens Band when they opened for the White Stripes at Irving the other night? I could be wrong.
Zach @ Primavera sound 2007, 9:00 am soundcheck (more about that)

Back in May it kind of leaked out that Grizzly Bear-fan Zach Condon and his band Beirut would be playing three NYC shows in September, but the tour dates I just received only list two September dates - so either plans changed, or they'll announce the third one after the first two sell out. All dates, and new album info, below....
As you somewhat already know...
The new record (yet to be titled) will be released on October 9th on Ba Da Bing!, and features a notable shift in sound from Gulag. With song titles like "Nantes" and "Cherbourg," the record is more a love letter to French culture. Featuring thirteen tracks in all, this new album continues on the trajectory that began with the Lon Gisland EP, where the entire eight-member band plays along on the recordings. Besides the eight-member orkestar and guests, Owen Pallett of Final Fantasy adds lush string arrangements to the songs, as well as guest vocals on a track entitled "Cliquot."Beirut - 2007 Tour DatesThe album was recorded in two separate sessions - at the A Hawk and a Hacksaw practice space, and at Arcade Fire's ornate studios outside of Montreal. To date, Gulag Orkestar has sold over 100,000 copies worldwide.
Beirut will be playing a limited number of North American shows this Fall in theatrical venues. Colleen, whose new album Les Ondes Silencieuse is out this month on The Leaf Label, will open.

Van She remixes Feist who just played Bonnaroo
DOWNLOAD: Feist - 1234 (Van She remix) (MP3)
Feist @ Bonnaroo 2007 (CRED)

I’ve also toured with Feist, but now that I’ve established my journalistic integrity we can dispense with formality. She’s a first-rate guitarist and musician who is inspiring some cult-like devotion from her fans.I didn’t hear cheering anywhere else like the cheering for Leslie Feist — she’d arch her eyebrow and the place would blow up — which always makes me wonder what the heck is going on. Her songs are minimalist and inventive, and she has a good voice and a good ear, like a PJ Harvey who’s not so mad at boys, but the rabid fandom is usually about something else. She must be code for something that I haven’t figured out. [John Roderick]
Tickets are at Ticketmaster for Feist's August 29th show at McCarren Park with Kevin Drew who has an MP3 to download too. More JR & Bonnaroo HERE.

They Shoot Horses Don't They Slim Moon
DOWNLOAD They Kill Horses Don't They - A Place Called LA (MP3)
DOWNLOAD: The Mary Timony Band - Sharpshooter (MP3)
Was it indie karma that got Kurt Cobain of Nirvana's friend, the rock star of indie-labels, Slim Moon killed like a horse about to become glue - shot down from his A&R position at Nonesuch last week by those sharp shooters at the Warner Music Group where he was working for less than a year after leaving Kill Rock Stars - the label he created - the label that houses bands like They Kill Horses Don't They and The Mary Timony Band - both who recently came out with new albums? Probably not, because Billboard is now reporting that Slim just moved over to Rykodisk, also owned by WMG.
Mary Timony just made a video for the song you can download above. You can stream They Shoot Horses Don't They's new album Pick Up Sticks. They're also playing Cake Shop and Silent Barn in August, and touring all over the place.....

Oxford Collapse, Cheeseburger & BEST FWENDS - the best free show today? (+ pics from SXSW) & TOUR DATES
Much like looking at the schedule of free stuff going on today for "Make Music New York", I totally procrastinated posting these pictures of Best Fwends playing my show at the Red Scoot Inn during SXSW (March 15, 2007)....

I can't say exactly why, but I loved them. They hit play on an iPod or something, and then jump around like maniacs singing to the songs they wrote. They look and act nuts, and they're really a lot of fun unless you don't think they're fun like my own best fwend who was standing next to me at the show and thought they were like Beavis & Butthead (in a bad way), and was pretty much embarrassed for herself to even be standing there in front of them at all. I wished they kept playing after they stopped.
VICE also had some not-nice stuff to say about them, but Gorilla Vs. Bear has been known to say nice things on their behalf.
So, maybe you'll love them, or maybe you'll hate them, but either way you can find out for free if you happen to be in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn today (June 21, 2007) when they play an incredible free show w/ the incredible Oxford Collapse (also BV show veterans), and Cheeseburger - who I'll even admit to liking sometimes.
More pics & info & tour dates & videos below...

Best Fwends - 2007 Tour Dates
Jun 21 - Make Music NY Festival w/ OXFORD COLLAPSE + CHEESEBURGER NYC, New York
Aug 11 - Emo's w/ THE SHOW IS THE RAINBOW + WHEN DINOS RULED THE EARTH Austin, Texas
Aug 16 - BEST FRIENDS DAY w/ I OBJECT, IRON LUNG, THE DEATH SET RICHMOND, Virginia
Aug 24 - PRE FUCK YEAH FEST SHOW LA, California
Aug 25 - Fuck Yeah Fest Afterparty w/ PLASTIC LITTLE + PISSED JEANS LA, California
Aug 26 - FUCK YEAH FEST/ECHO PARK LA, California
Oxford Collapse - 2007 Tour Dates
Jun 21 - Bedford Ave. Brooklyn, New York
Jul 8 - Power Chord Academy Queens, New York
Jul 14 - Pitchfork Music Festival Chicago, Illinois

And oh yeah - Best Fwends are like totally in Downtown Records recording artist Spank Rock's Top 8 (I mean 24).
You will find some MPfwees HERE.

DAN DEACON adds 2nd Brooklyn show + 2007 Tour Dates w/ GIRL TALK (webster hall)
DOWNLOAD: Dan Deacon - The Crystal Cat (MP3)
Further confirmation that Summer has started - the first free show at McCarren Pool in Williamsburg happens this Sunday (June 24) with Superchunk, Oakley Hall and +/-. Then just two weeks after that comes the one with The Octopus Project, Erase Errata, and Dan Deacon. That same night Dan is then playing a 2nd show in Brooklyn - @ Death By Audio - a venue located on 49 South 2nd - with OCDJ who is also DJing at McCarren Pool that day AND who is playing Citysol after Les Savy Fav.
Then Dan is coming back to NYC again in September - that time with Girl Talk, and that time at Webster Hall, and that time on a super-power-hip-tag-team tour, that, like Pitchfork said, is crazy-something like the pairing of Arcade Fire & LCD Soundsystem (except really Arcade Fire & LCD Soundsystem is kind of a little bit better because they don't just hit buttons and jump around - NOT THAT THERE'S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT - not to mention they'll be doing all that button pushing at Webster Hall - WHICH COULD BE OK - I mean both tours will be good in their own way I think...).

Bonnaroo 2007 - day 1 (Thursday June 14)
Like I said, Andrew Fischler made the trip to Bonnaroo...

I should probably preface this by saying I'm a multi-year vet of Bonnaroo. Since 2003 I've been making a trip to Manchester, TN a part of my summer. That includes the 17-hour, 900-mile trip from my Weehawken, NJ home. I'm part of that sick breed of people who like road trips, driving, and find camping a joy. The life of the festival outside the stages is just as much a part of the experience as what you'll find inside the gates.
Now while the drive down was nothing of major consequence (unless you're a big fan of trees, hills, mountains, cows and 18-wheelers - then, oh boy was it a big thing!), this was actually the first time in years that I actually hit any semblance of traffic getting in. Maybe it was because this was the first year the festival was officially 4-days long (though they've been having Thursday night acts for years), or maybe it speaks to the sold-out attendance of 80,000 which made this the 6th largest city in Tennessee for the duration (with the highest unemployment rate in the state, I might add ^_^).
The National

The National @ That Tent: First band on the to-see list was one I had never heard until the trip down when my friend started playing them through his iPod. What sounded so sullen and morose on my car stereo had so much more pop to it live - not as lively as their fans though. Hell, I almost lost my hearing on the first night, and not from any amp, but from some guy flipping out and screaming his head off when they played "Secret Meeting". Unfortunately, consideration for the proximity of someone's ear is usually the last thing on a festival-goer's mind.
Clutch

Clutch @ This Tent: To say the crowd was amped for this show would be a mild understatement. So eager was everyone that the sound tech testing the mics had no problem getting the crowd to respond in sing-song fashion to everything he said. This was also the first time I can ever remember seeing mass crowd surfing at Bonnaroo -- a first time for everything I guess. The band has grown since the last time I saw them - that includes the number of members (organist Mick Schauer joining the core of Neil Fallon, Tim Sult, Dan Maines and Jean-Paul Gaster), and the size of their catalog (with their new release "From Beale Street To Oblivion").
The highlights of their set were the classics like "Big News" and "Pure Rock Fury", but the new stuff - especially "Electric Worry - not only held up, it was as strong as the old stuff. "Beale Street" could be one of the best, yet most underrated, albums of '07.

The Mountain Goats @ Farm Sanctuary, Watkins Glen, NY

A review by Robert Palazzo
On Sunday (June 17, 2007) I was one of the 200 lucky enough to attend The Mountain Goats benefit concert for Farm Sanctuary entitled Zoop!. Farm Sanctuary is an amazing non-profit organization that has been rescuing farm animals since 1986. For more information about this amazing organization you can visit their website.Below are set lists from both shows courtesy of The Mountain Goats message board:Zoop! was a benefit show that John Darnielle planned a few months ago, and after a lot of hard work the pay off was huge. People from as far as Illinois to Ireland made the trip to Watkins Glen, NY. The festivities began Saturday night as Perry Wright from The Prayers and Tears of Arthur Digby Sellers and Peter Hughes of The Mountain Goats kicked things off. This was followed by a solo set from John Darnielle.
On Sunday night, John Darnielle played an all request set that was organized via The Mountain Goats message board. The 22 song set consisted of mostly B-sides and rarities, but somehow everyone in the crowd still seemed to know the words. For a couple of the songs John had to use lyrics sheets as a reference along with a little help from the crowd. The regular set ended with John's crowd pleasing sing-along of Ace of Bass' song "The Sign" (probably for the last time ever due to John's hatred of playing the cover), "If You See Light" from Get Lonely, and finally the "Cobscook Bay". He then came out for two encores because the crowd would just not let down, and finally the set ended.
The real beauty of the whole event was that everyone was so respectful to the farm, and the entire farm staff was so welcoming. I was lucky enough to conduct an interview with John about the event for my college radio station 88.9 FM WNYO. The full text from the interview will be up soon on the station website within the next few days. In the interview he talks about how he became involved with Farm Sanctuary, the typical Mountain Goats fan, and shares some information about the upcoming album.

Mercury Rev or sideproject are playing the Annex tonight?
"Catch a rare performance by Harmony Rockets at The Annex on Wednesday June 20. Tickets are available at the venue, or just click here. Doors open at 8pm, the running order is as follows:" [says Mercury Rev]
8:30pm John Devries (Agitpop)
9:30pm Harmony Rockets
10:15pm Silent League
11:15pm Hopewell
According to one helpful source:
It’s all the full-time, core members of Mercury Rev -- Jonathan Donahue (singer), Grasshopper (guitarist), and Jeff Mercel (drums/keys). I honestly don’t know anything more then that. I think they put out some songs under the name Harmony Rockets years ago and maybe it’s a side project.

Spank Rock signs to Downtown Records
Spank Rock @ Highline Ballroom, NYC - May 15, 2007 (CRED)

Spank Rock, the hip-hop/funk/electro group originally from Baltimore that was the subject of an intense, year-long, behind-the-scenes industry battle, recently completed a four album deal with Downtown Records, the independent label responsible for launching Gnarls Barkley’s platinum-selling debut St. Elsewhere. Formed less than two years ago by former major label talent scout Josh Deutsch, Downtown beat out heavy-hitting contenders like Domino and Atlantic to sign the much-loved underground sensation known for its crafty beats, raunchy lyrics, and raucous live shows. [The Daily Swarm]I believe all that except the part about Downtown (also the home of Art Brut and Cold War Kids) being independent. In fact, I guess that sort of means Atlantic was fighting itself sort of maybe? Here's more Spank Rock.

Long Winters vs the Hold Steady & Decemberists @ Bonnaroo
DOWNLOAD: The Long Winters - Ultimatum (MP3)
The Long Winters' John Roderick blogged Bonnaroo this year.

In all fairness, I should probably recuse myself from reviewing the Decembrists. They are a band I know, we’ve toured together and I’ve appeared in one of their music videos. Also, Decembrist Chris Funk guested on the Long Winters’ most recent album. I can’t possibly review their show impartially, because I like them too much.John was not as nice about the Hold Steady....On the other hand, I’ve been in a “fake feud” with them for several years, involving some “smack talking” and pranking, which despite my best efforts has failed to catch fire mostly because they reciprocate too passively. (I think they’re holding out for a fake feud with Sufjan Stevens or something). So I can’t really be trusted not to call them a bunch of fruity, Vaudeville, pirate-song-singing sissies just to burn their britches a little.
But in this instance I’m acting as a professional journalist and I must honor my caste by reporting the news without adornment. They played their epic song, "The Tain," which was a bold choice, and their kitchy theatricality played exceptionally well with the big crowd.
At one point Colin led the audience in bidding the sun to set, and the effect was like a pagan ceremony — 15,000 people all motioning in unison toward the sun. In the end Mavis Staples joined them for a song, which was a little like... Like... Well, there is no better analogy for an unfathomable incongruity than: Like Mavis Staples jamming with the Decembrists. [John Roderick]
These fellows have a rabid popularity that leaves me deeply conflicted. Although their live show is undeniably full of energy, full of engagement, and full of whimsy, their music is full of s--t....which I guess serves the Hold Steady right for recently talking s--t about Jim Morrisson and The Doors.

Patti Smith opening Music Hall of Williamsburg (Sep 4)

One minute she's closing a venue, and the next...
The Bowery Presents, an independent New York concert-promotion company, today announced the Music Hall of Williamsburg will open on September 4th with Patti Smith and Her Band. The Music Hall of Williamsburg will occupy the former space of Northsix, on 66 North 6th Street, and will provide a first-rate, mid-size venue for bands to play in Brooklyn.Jose Gonzalez and the Black Lips are already scheduled to play there too. This new venue is about the same size as Bowery Ballroom in Manhattan, and the competing new Luna Lounge in the same Brooklyn neighborhood. More below...
From the press release:
Patti Smith is widely regarded as one of the most influential artists in rock history and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in March. Well-loved by her New York fans, Smith, for the eighth consecutive year, sold out her annual New Year’s Eve/Birthday run at The Bowery Ballroom as well as an April record release show at Hiro Ballroom in support of her latest album, Twelve.Previously“To have Patti and her band, who have become so much a part of our lives, open the Music Hall, for me, is the perfect beginning to our life in Brooklyn,” said Michael Swier, a partner in The Bowery Presents. “We’ve been fortunate to have a lot of support for the Bowery Ballroom and the Mercury Lounge over the years, and we hope that with our continued dedication to the music and the fans, the Music Hall will become a well-loved neighborhood music destination.”
The 550-capacity Music Hall of Williamsburg will be the first Brooklyn music venue to be managed and operated by The Bowery Presents, which has promoted shows in Brooklyn since 2006 and will promote a line-up of shows at McCarren Park Pool and Keyspan Park at Coney Island this summer. Inspired by the look and feel of the Bowery Ballroom, and committed to providing the best experience possible for bands and fans, the Music Hall of Williamsburg will have a focus on acoustics, sightlines and space.
The re-designed layout of the Music Hall of Williamsburg will be three levels, including a lower level lounge, where guests can congregate around the U-shaped bar, one of three bars in the facility. The ground floor lobby leads into the Music Hall performance space, which will feature 28’ ceilings, side balconies and a back mezzanine. The venue will feature state-of-the-art sound, lighting, broadcasting and recording systems, which will also have the capability to be used for Internet, TV and radio broadcasts.
Josh Moore, who previously worked at AEG Live's Nokia Theatre Times Square and is a founding partner of Jam Cruise, was brought on board in March to book the Music Hall of Williamsburg.
"The Bowery Presents has a vision of developing and working with quality artists from the ground up, and the Music Hall provides an amazing new place for artists to play Brooklyn," said Moore. "I couldn't be more excited to be booking this venue."
Tickets for the opening night Patti Smith show will go on sale Saturday, June 23 at Noon, for $35 each. Additional shows will be announced on July 10. Please visit www.musichallofwilliamsburg.com for schedule updates.

Austin City Limits & Lollapalooza schedules
Arctic Monkeys are playing the same time as Muse. Same with My Morning Jacket & Wilco, and Arcade Fire & The White Stripes. Do they do that on purpose for crowd control? I'm almost definitely going down to Austin this year (September 14-16), and those are biggest conflicts I noticed right off the bat. Who else should I make sure to see?
The 2007 Lollapalooza (August 3-5) schedule is up too. Who's going to Chicago?

Klaus Kinski's Comedy Canon (06/19/07)
DOWNLOAD: Patton Oswalt - Dukes of Hazard (MP3) (info)
Tickets are on sale for The Dave Hill Explosion w/ John Hodgman & Jonathan Coulton @ UCB, Crash Test with Aziz Ansari @ UCB, and a special Tinkle show at Southpaw with David Cross, Todd Barry, and Jon Benjamin. Slovin and Allen and Reggie Watts are hosting ROFL at Joe's Pub. Patton Oswalt is playing a free show at Sound Fix.

Jon Benjamin paid a guy to serenade Eug and Bobby for the Invite Them Up anniversary. Oliver and Schaal look on from the back room. (April 25, 2007)More recently, Demetri Martin, Aziz, David Cross & Nick Kroll were at Bonnaroo, and Flight of the Conchords played Gramercy Theatre.
I am also beyond giddy to report that HBO Video will be releasing Louis CK's live 1 hour special Shameless on June 26th, 2007. That's a Tuesday people. Shameless is CK's third HBO special, and further reinforces my opinion that he is easily one of the best comedians out there. He takes nauseatingly banal topics such as family life, childhood, and sex and riffs about them in such an unexpectedly blunt and graphic manner that you can't help but be drawn in. To celebrate this release, we are giving away TWO copies of Shameless to two lucky winners. Send an e-mail to BVCONTESTS@HOTMAIL.COM and tell us what comedian you think should really release a DVD ASAP. Two winners will be picked at random and notified.
More comedy (including a Louis CK DVD clip) belooooooow....
Fabrice Fabrice gives Aziz Aziz a little help hosting Crash Test. (May 21, 2007)

In other awesome comedy release news, AST Records has just released Paul F. Tompkins’ debut album, "Impersonal.” Recorded at the UCB Theater in LA, this album contains 45-minutes of Paul's best material harvested from a career spanning almost two decades. You can buy it directly from AST Records or get it at one of his zillion upcoming live apperances.
Speaking of Paul F. Tompkins, did anyone catch his apperance on The Best Show on WFMU with Tom Scharpling on June 12, 2007?
A heavily tattooed David Cross has been making the rounds in NYC recently (possibly boning up for his upcoming 100 Club shows in England). I missed his 6/10/07 show at The Green Room. I missed his appearance at Union Hall this past Sunday. However, I DID manage to check out the YouTube Show & Tell Show with Julie and Jackie at Mo Pitkins on June 11th. The show featured Amelie Gillette, Leo Allen, Jon Benjamin, David Cross, and your hostesses Julie and Jackie. The basic idea of the show is that the guests would show up with their favorite YouTube clips and essentially riff about them. For the most part, the clips were laughable and the commentary was funny. But David, though funny, didn't appear to dig the premise of the show; he had a more serious vibe to his bit. His main concern was that, more than just host silly clips of people wiping out and being dumb, YouTube (and the blogosphere itself) has become a place where people who really have nothing profound to say, can vaildate themselves by brodacasting their banal rants and accumulating 'subscribers'. While the other participants showed laugh out loud "look how stupid that person is!" type of stuff, David showed clips which reinforced his theory. A funny, yet heart-smart, evening.
Entertainer extraordinaire Reggie Watts recently started a weekly residency at Rififi. Full of Reggie's remarkable songs and stories, the Rififi website bills it as supertalented performer, faster than a speeding punchline, more powerful than a steaming latte, able to leap tall non-sequiturs in a single bound... reggie watts will shock and amaze you with his virtuoso performances and superhuman ability with a sampler!! I missed the first one, because I'm a douche, but Alive From New York was there.

"Promoters finding ways to sidestep Ticketmaster"
Bonnaroo concertgoers watching the White Stripes (CRED)

The big news for frustrated consumers is that a major change could be in the works: The concert industry has been buzzing for months that Live Nation may begin selling tickets for all of its concerts itself. It is currently Ticketmaster's single largest client, but that contract expires next year, and Live Nation owns a stake in two major independent companies, Next Ticketing and MusicToday.com, which both rival Ticketmaster's capabilities for selling tickets online.More Bonnaroo pictures HERE and HEREIf Live Nation cuts Ticketmaster out of the transaction and sells tickets direct to concertgoers, industry experts say that it will be able to keep more of the ticketing revenue for itself -- and hopefully reduce service fees for concertgoers.
"We're in the midst of talking through next steps with Ticketmaster," Vlautin said, "so it wouldn't be appropriate for me to comment on that." [Chicago Sun Times]

Flight of the Conchords @ Gramercy Theatre, NYC
Flight of the Conchords @ Gramercy Theatre, NYC - June 13, 2007 (CRED)

by Klaus Kinski
It has been a very very very long time since I last saw Flight of the Conchords perform live. I actually even sort of forgot about them for a while. But all of a sudden they've exploded back onto the scene with a vengeance and now seem to be everywhere. Of their two "sold out" * shows at Blender Theater at Gramercy I was able to catch second show on 6/14. I had high hopes because my pal Matt went the first night (6/13), and told me this:
The show was great. Really hilarious. Eugene Mirman came out around 8:40 and did a solid 45 minutes (or so), then instead of an intermission, he brought the Conchords right out and they performed till around 10:45. They did all the big songs (Business Time, Think about It, Jenny), and encored with ‘Bowie’s in Space’, which is probably the most brilliant Bowie homage ever. The opener was their HBO series co-star Rhys Darby whose forté, really, is making funny sound effects a la Michael Winslow. I saw him a while back at the final Hot Tub Variety Show at Comix and found him a bit corny. However, this time around he was extremely funny and balanced his sound effects with actual stand up much better than before. He was phenominal and I got the sense the crowd was digging his schtick.
Then came the Conchords. First, I have to give props to the crowd. It seemed to me that each and every person in the room was a devoted Conchords fan. I never once got the impression that some of the people who were there were there because it was a 'hot show' or a 'scene'; an impression I get at a lot of shows in NYC, comedy or otherwise. It was one of those things where once the Conchords would strike the very first note of a song, 85% of the people there knew exactly what song it was and would go bonkers. It was fantastic.
The Conchords themselves were spectacular. Their songs are musically well constructed and are extremely funny without resorting to the use of any vulgarity or excessive lewdness. All the songs they played were so good, but the highlight for me was the song Bowie's in Space (if you want go here and scroll down to read the lyrics). Bret and Jemaine sing the tune using every vocal style David Bowie ever used. It is the perfect imitation, the perfect homage.
Because the Conchords are a comedic duo who play acoustic guitars and have their own show on HBO, some people are quick to refer to them as 'New Zealand's Tenacious D'. On paper they might appear similar, but last night's show proved that the Conchords are much gentler, sweeter, funnier, less anthemic, and way more sincere than the D.
Look for a Flight of the Conchords EP on Sub Pop Records in August 2007.
* "sold out" in quotes because, from where I was standing, I counted around 10 empty seats

"Sound Fix Records Opens Its New Show Venue"

I almost missed this press release about Sound Fix:
After nearly five long months of renovation, the Williamsburg indie record shop Sound Fix has officially reopened its beloved lounge and music space, the site of many memorable shows over the years, including Beirut, Will Oldham, the Hold Steady, The National, the Mountain Goats, Jens Lekman, Art Brut and many other great bands and artists. In June alone, such stellar musical guests as the Sea and Cake, the Ladybug Transistor, the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players, Oneida, Ida and A Sunny Day in Glasgow are scheduled for live appearances; the list grows rapidly every day. Monday night parties featuring midnight sales on Tuesday's big new releases will become a unique and regular affair, and a music trivia night will be a weekly happening, with prizes like gift certificates to the record store and exclusive music giveaways.Upcoming shows:Located in the Northside of Williamsburg at 110 Bedford Ave (corner of N. 11th St.), the Sound Fix Lounge has been given a complete makeover, top to bottom, with a new fully stocked bar, elevated stage, high-quality sound system, ambiance lighting, polished furniture and lavish decor. Plans for this improved space include not only live music events but also readings, theater, film screenings, game nights, comedy, private parties and more.
For years, the Sound Fix record shop has worked in collaboration with the neighboring Fix Café. Earlier this year, Sound Fix bought out the café and has been working on uniting the two spaces like never before. Now it is truly one venue, a record store attached to a comfortable, spacious lounge that serves coffee and waffles (our specialty) during the day and offers a full bar at night, offering $2 PBRs around the clock and competitive prices on well and top-shelf liquor.
The Sound Fix Lounge is now open to receiving submissions for prospective shows, parties and unique happenings, and will film and record many of the events for web and media interaction (podcasting, public access, etc.)

Weakerthans, Clutch, Lee Perry & Lucero playing boats
Back when the Rocks Off "School of Rock" festival in NJ was announced, I definitely wondered if, and hoped that, the Weakerthans would play their own NYC show as well. The Bad Brains are doing it - also for Rocks Off - on a boat (now sold out). Ends up - so are the Weakerthans, and it's this Friday June 22nd (NOT SOLD OUT).
Lee "Scratch" Perry (tix), Lucero (tix), Clutch (tix) RJD2 (tix), and many others are playing concert cruises too.

Battles VS The Strokes ++ Franz Ferdinand VS Television ++ Scritti Politti VS Arcade Fire AND SO ON

Ian Williams of up and coming NYC band Battles (tour dates) had this to say....
The Strokes were just rich kids from uptown New York; the children of the heads of supermodel agencies who formed a rock band and thought they deserved respect because of that. Suddenly the downtown, older form of punk rock got co-opted by the system. If ever there was a point where Gucci and rebellion were married together, it was right there. The Strokes have, basically, been responsible for five or six years of a new form of hair metal, in the guise of something more tasteful. Their music is post-9/11 party music because it came out that week and everybody wanted to dance. They're seen as the rebirth of rock in the UK - but it's a very conservative, old-fashioned idea of rock for the 21st century. As for their punk credentials, I'm not going to say anyone's more authentic than anyone else ... But the Strokes are the new Duran Duran; the new decadence for the new millennium. [The Guardian]Oh man, I hope they don't run into each other into the subway because if they do, there's most certainly going to be a BATTLE! (Ba-dum-bum!) Oh wait, The Strokes probably don't use the subway because they're SO RICH! (Ba-dum-bum?......)
.....speaking of Duran Duran, they played that fan club show in NYC last night (June 17). Congrats to the winners of the contest.
.....and speaking of the Strokes, Albert Hammond Jr. is playing Webster Hall tonight (June 18).
A bunch of big shows happened in NYC recently. One of them was Franz Ferdinand playing a small show at Bowery Ballroom. Another was Television playing a big show at Central Park Summerstage. These two bands meet up in our second conflict. Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand had this to say....
People expect us to love Television the way they think we love Gang of Four and were influenced by them - but we don't and we weren't! Marquee Moon is one of those records that I thought I loved, but it was only after a few years I realised I didn't love the album, just the first 10 bars of the title track, which are pretty astonishing..... [Guardian]First Franz vs Paul, and now this.
The Guardian article goes on to pit Scritti Politti against the Arcade Fire ("the rhythms are pedestrian"), The Flaming Lips against Nirvana, Art Brut against The Stone Roses, and The Hold Steady against The Doors. (thx RS)

VIDEO: 'Zach' Beirut sings Grizzly Bear's 'Knife' ++ MORE
In today's installment of 'Indie Rock Orgy'....
It was the end of a nice drunken evening in Paris with Zach Condon. We sang and played guitar and toy piano. And when we went home, we made this present to Ed Droste and Grizzly Bear. ***This is not a Take Away Show. The real Beirut Take Away Show will be later***Also from that drunken evening...
A small guitar, Sidi Ali form France, Zach condon from the US, some beers and Hallelujah...'The Knife' has also been sung by a choir, covered by some kids, mixed with the other Knife, covered by CSS?, covered by Born Ruffians, and mashed up with Clipse.
Sometimes Final Fantasy Owen is playing with Ed. Sometimes he's playing with Zach.
And since I already posted the picture of Zach and Ed that would have gone better in this post, here's one of Ed and Feist instead - taken backstage at Bonnraoo this weekend:

Feist and Grizzly Bear just toured together, and played Town Hall in NYC. Feist is playing McCarren Pool. Grizzly Bear is playing Summerstage. Beirut has three shows coming up in September.
La Blogoteque has also filmed Grizzly Bear.

VOXTROT played Webster Hall, playing SIREN FESTIVAL
Last week we found out that Cursive, White Rabbits, and M.I.A. were added to the Village Voice Siren Festival (July 21) lineup that already included New York Dolls, We Are Scientists, Matt And Kim, The Black Lips, Dr. Dog, Lavender Diamond, The Detroit Cobras, Elvis Perkins, The Twilight Sad, and The Noisettes.
Today I can tell you that the final unannounced band is in fact: VOXTROT! Friday night I went to see them play (obviously) at their biggest headlining show to date here in NYC....
Voxtrot/Au Revior Simone dance party @ Webster Hall - June 15, 2007 (CRED)

Au Revior Simone opened, and, like the time they opened for Peter Bjorn and John at the same venue, came back to join the headliner on stage...twice - once to sing backup, and another for an all-out on-stage dance party. Unlike past Voxtrot shows (and I've seen a lot of them), this one was further enhanced by the presence of the Tosca String Quartet. Overall, great show - I missed Au Revoir Simone and Favourite Sons though.
More Voxtrot tour dates HERE.

RICHARD LLOYD - recently sick, but supposedly playing with TELEVISION (for the last time?)
Richard Lloyd @ Knitting Factory, NYC - May 19, 2007 (CRED)

If you've been reading the comments in today's Television post, you probably heard something like this sad news posted on Richard's website:
Message from the webmaster, 1st June 2007:That news was posted just 13 days after he played Knitting Factory (see above), and just 15 days before his scheduled show with Television this Saturday in Central Park. Now people are wondering if he'll be well enough to play. According to a Summerstage spokesman, Richard will be playing with Television "as far as we know". That's all I've got.
I am sorry to report that Richard is currently unwell. He has been in hospital Intensive Care for 8 days with pneumonia as a primary medical problem. This has responded to treatment and he has shown some improvement and is now free of the breathing apparatus.
It's also worth pointing out (as it was also already in the comments), that this may be Richard's last Television show ever (well, it's about time! just kidding)...
Also from Richard's site:
After the possible Summer stage show in New York City on June 16, which is to be announced by the city of New York on May 15, Richard Lloyd will, after 34 years, be amicably severing all ties with the band Television, in order that he may concentrate his magnetic force and supernatural energies upon his own career in support of his forthcoming record, due out in the fall. This new record directly competes with Marquee Moon, Axis: Bold as Love, The Doors, Patti Smith's Horses, Bob Marley's Natty Dread, Neil Young's Harvest, or any other record you can name, as one of the greatest records ever made in the history of rock 'n roll. That being so, Richard needs to concentrate all of his energies to support it and its subsidiary philosophies.Richard, feel better, and I hope to see you up there on stage this Saturday. To the fans of Television, from the very first show at the townhouse Theatre on March 4, 1974 till the hopeful last show here in New York at the Summer stage -- which by the way, is a free show, thank you for your support over these many years. I hope to see you follow both my own and the other members of the band in their own solo efforts for many more years to come.
Thank you,
Sincerely yours,
Richard Lloyd

VIDEO: Keren Ann - 'Lay Your Head Down'
I was wondering if she any videos for her new album. Just found this...
directed by camille vivier
I've been listening to the new record, and I love Keren, but I don't think she's put out a truly great whole album yet. That said, most of what she does is, it at the least, perfectly listenable. Unfortunately the above video is probably the song on the new album that rubbed me the wrong way the most - still listenable, but it sounds like she's trying a little too hard to be (I'm bad at 'name that tune', so bear with me...) Mazzy Star or Jesus & Mary Chain or Velvet Underground or ?? -- hand claps, harmonica & choir included. Maybe they forced her to write this track to have something even remotely radio-friendly?
Keren is on tour.
