If you caught me on the Brooklyn Vegan Blog Radio Show this week on Sirius, you might have heard us mention the upcoming People Don't Dance No More party June 15th at the Vault at Element. We'll be dancing to the sounds of one of the newest DFA signees (or is it signings?): Andy Butler of Hercules & Love Affair. Andy's upcoming releases on DFA mix a strong love of early 90s techno and early 80s slutty disco, as well as some collaborations with Antony on vocals.

Check out the Myspace for "Anthene" and "Classique2". Andy did a guest mix for Tim Sweeney's always stellar Beats in Space a few weeks ago (MP3 above). While you are listening shoot an email to the People Don't Dance RSVP $5 reduced list...

The full tracklisting to the Sirius Blog Radio show is all the way down at the bottom of the post.

KavinskyTwo absolutely smashing nights at Studio B this weekend. Friday night has Ed Banger's Kavinsky making his NYC debut at the Fun party. You might recognize Kavinsky's name from your Daft Punk ticket. He's going out on tour with the robots this summer. He loves him some 80s nitemusic.

On Saturday night, Fixed features another super ridiculous Ed Banger NYC debut DJ set from Mr. Oizo. If you listened to dance music, or watched TV in Europe, in 1999 you know "Flatbeat". If you've been listening to the Ed Banger sound this year, you'll know Mr. Oizo from his production work for Uffie, and remixes for Cassius and the Scissor Sisters. Just a word to the wise, its pronounced "Wah-zo" and his beats are as stunted, sleazy, and slutty as they come. His Transexual EP is the sluttiest yet and comes out this summer on Ed Banger. Added bonus, In Flagranti is playing live.

Thanks to your favorite malt likker, Colt 45 is giving free entrance to 300 people to the Fixed party on Saturday. Email TalesofNYC@viceland.com and tell them why you like Colt 45. (editor's note: duh. because it works every time)

PS1 Warm Up 2007 Summer Schedule

PS1

The PS1 Warm Up party in Long Island City has announced their line up for the summer...As I mentioned, this party is incredible in its depth of talent and ridiculous setting. All of the dates are below and there is no shortage of disco parties from DFA to Rong to a live Escort show. I love disco in the daylight... -David Bruno

P.S.1's SUMMER MUSIC SERIES KICKS OFF JUNE 30

Every Saturday, 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. June 30 - September 1, 2007

P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center is pleased to announce Warm Up 2007, the critically acclaimed curated series of live music and DJ acts that has become one of New York’s most exciting and anticipated summer events. The backdrop of this year’s Warm Up is Liquid Sky by Los Angeles-based firm Ball-Nogues, winner of the 2007 MoMA/P.S.1 Young Architects Program.

Warm Up 2007 features a new curatorial team led by David Weinstein, Jason Drummond, and Zach Layton and promises a summer-long adventure into the wild, the unexpected, and the dangerously danceable. Each Saturday, music and performances will revolve around a theme or guest host. Objektivity, Tummy Touch, Rong, DFA and other music labels have been invited to assemble six-hour programs featuring their most exhilarating artists. Added into the weekly mix is challenging new work from innovators in audio technology, new instruments, new media, and experimental sounds.

“Warm Up was born 11 years ago as a P.S.1 project fueled by a hunger for the new and adventurous music bubbling up around town,” said Warm Up organizer David Weinstein. “This year we deliberately returned to that model by exploring the many new clubs, concert halls and media centers during one of the most active and exciting New York seasons in a decade. In order to bring a challenging, compelling, and entertaining program to P.S.1, we have consulted with the most original producers covering the whole musical spectrum in New York from noise and ambient, to hip hop and punk, to classical and non-western genres.”

Past Warm Up live performances and DJ sets have included renowned international acts, such as Body & Soul, DJ Harvey, Groove Collective, Juan Atkins, Stacey Pullen, Lovebug Starski, MU, Monolake, Afrika Bambaataa, Mad Professor, Richie Hawtin, Trevor Jackson, DJ Craze, Charlie Dark, Vikter Duplaix, Fischerspooner, Frederic Galliano, Kid Koala, Arto Lindsay, Scissor Sisters, Jeannie Hopper, Ursula Rucker, Derrick May, Swayzak, Luke Vibert, X-Press 2, Danny Wang, and many more.

The music series, produced by P.S.1 Director of Operations Tony Guererro, was conceived in 1997 as a summer-long dance party to attract crowds to Long Island City, Queens, and P.S.1. It now draws thousands of locals and international visitors every Saturday for a merging of exciting music, contemporary art, and fascinating people-watching. It has received critical attention both stateside and worldwide. Time Out New York readers voted Warm Up the “best club” in New York City, and The Observer (UK) ranked it #10 of “The 20 Hottest Beach Parties in the World.”

Warm Up will also be streamed live on Art Radio WPS1.org. Simply visit www.wps1.org every Saturday, June 30 through September 1, from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. EST and enjoy full access to the music, along with on-the-spot artist and DJ interviews. The broadcasts will be archived on WPS1.org.

It is easily accessible by bus and subway. Traveling by subway, visitors should take either the E or V to 23 Street-Ely Avenue (note that the V does not run on weekends); the 7 to 45 Road-Courthouse Square; or the G to Court Square or 21 Street-Van Alst. Visitors may also take the Q67 bus to Jackson and 46th Avenues or the B61 to Jackson Avenue. Visitors using public transportation are advised to check the MTA Weekend Service Advisory.

Young Architects Program
2007 marks the eighth annual MoMA/P.S.1 Young Architects Program, a competition that gives emerging architects the opportunity to realize an outdoor environment designed to host the Warm Up series. This year’s project, Liquid Sky, by the Los Angeles-based firm Ball-Nogues, features a canopy of tinted, Mylar petals that will immerse the viewer in kaleidoscopic patterns of colored light. Since 1998, artists and architects including Gelatin, Philip Johnson, SHoP, ROY, William Massie, EMERGENT/Tom Wiscombe, Xefirotarch, and OBRA have transformed P.S.1’s courtyard into an urban beach with works of interactive architecture and sculpture that have inspired both critics and audiences alike.

2007 Primavera Sound Festival - day three (Saturday June 2)

Today Evan Korte concludes his review of the 2007 Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona, Spain. If you're just joining us, why not start with day one and day two? And now, day three....

The Good The Bad & The Queen @ Primavera Sound 2007 (CRED)
PRimavera Sound 2007

The Good the Bad and the Queen (or the band with no name): The first few hours of Saturday’s Primavera were uneventful for me. I got there later than I wanted to, and only saw the last song of Ted Leo’s set. I was thoroughly unimpressed by both the Long Blondes and Architecture in Helsinki, and chilled in the back for Patti Smith.

The Good, the Bad and the Queen was the first concert in which I had high expectations. I haven’t heard the album, but I mean come on - with all the talent in that band I’d be an idiot not to check it out. Unfortunately it was a disappointment. A mere two days after the concert, the only thing that stands out in my mind is how badass bassist Paul Simonon looked hopping around in his suit, smoking cigarettes with no hands, and chugging whiskey like it was Kool-Aid. I guess an apt analogy would be seeing the Dream Team in a free throw shooting contest. Damon Albarn’s songs did absolutely nothing for me, and drummer Tony Allen and guitarist Simon Tong were completely under utilized. Everyone else in the crowd seemed to be pretty into it though.

Sonic Youth @ Primavera Sound 2007 (CRED)
PRimavera Sound 2007

Sonic Youth: Daydream Nation! I must confess that my overall Sonic Youth expertise is not that great. I had only heard Daydream Nation a couple of times in passing, but I mean everyone loves that album, and it was the first time ever that they performed it from beginning to end. They went on at 11:35 which meant I'd have to miss most of Hot Chip who were going on at 12. I made the right decision - the album rocked live! They mentioned several times that they hadn’t played many of the songs in seventeen years, but I thought they sounded incredible. The band was just so incredibly tight. Thurston Moore and the drummer absolutely blew me away. I forgot how experimental, yet melodic that album is. They're performing the album again at McCarren Park Pool in July, and I would encourage all of you to cough up the 34 dollars or whatever it is and go. You won’t be disappointed. They played a second, shorter set of newer material, but I had to skip that to check out the Buzzcocks.

The Buzzcocks @ Primavera Sound 2007 (CRED)
PRimavera Sound 2007

The Buzzcocks: My biggest conflict of the festival was between the Buzzcocks and Grizzly Bear. As much as I love Yellow House, the Buzzcocks are legends. I simply could not miss the opportunity to see them live, even if there are only two original members in the band. This was possibly the best show of the festival. They look like old men now, but who cares? They still know how to rock with the best of them. I was up front eagerly awaiting the first song, and as soon as the first notes were played, a gigantic moshpit erupted all around me. When they came out for the encore, Steve Diggle was clearly wasted. He told all of us to, “Stop watching MTV, it’s killing your minds!” about ten times. It was the last show of their tour, they were thrilled to be there, and the audience was ecstatic to be watching them. At the end of the show, nearly everyone that had been shoving me around like a pin ball, put their arm around me or gave me a high five. What a great time. Highlights included “Orgasm Addict,” “What Do I Get,” “Autonomy,” and “Ever Fallen in Love.”

Editor's Note: While Evan was moshing to the Buzzcocks, Zach from Beirut was busy jumping up and down on stage with Grizzly Bear...

Wilco @ Primavera Sound 2007 (CRED)
PRimavera Sound 2007

Wilco: My Primavera experience ended satisfyingly with Wilco, though I was a bit disappointed. The new songs sounded great live, and the band certainly has the best musicians that they’ve ever had. Guitarist Nels Cline plays the pedal steel like a Nashville veteran. Glen Kotche is one of the best drummers around. The band on any given song is able to take a number of noisy, avant-garde detours and still get back to the main melody of the song that they are playing in a heartbeat. I guess my biggest complaints are with the song selections. No “Heavy Metal Drummer,” only a couple of songs off of Summer Teeth, and nothing off of Being There. The set was pretty much an exact replica of the one I saw them play at Lollapalooza last summer. Jeff Tweedy is a masterful songwriter, and Wilco are still one of the best bands around, but you get the feeling that they are slipping into complacency a little bit. And that would be a terrible thing. Still though, there’s nothing wrong with watching adventurous musicians do what they do best. Highlights include “A Shot in the Arm,” “Jesus Etc.” “I’m the Man Who Loves You,” “Via Chicago,” and “Shake it Off.”

Primavera Sound 2007 (CRED)
PRimavera Sound 2007

Overall, Primavera Sound was an amazing festival. I saw just twelve bands out of the twenty or thirty that I wanted to see. That’s a testament to what a great job the organizers did. They know what the hipsters want to hear. Of course there were flaws (the most glaring one being the sound problems on the ATP stage), but anytime you have this many great bands in one place it’s going to be mostly spectacular. If they keep putting lineups together like this one, I’ll be heading back very soon.

Editor's Note again: Though Evan did catch Daydream Nation, he missed Slint play Spiderland on the first day of the festival. Videos below....

Slint live @ Primavera Sound (Barcelona 07)

slint live - primavera sound 2007 barcelona

Slint is also doing it at Webster Hall.

Thanks Evan!

The Pipettes played Highline Ballroom, Other Music

The Pipettes @ Highline Ballroom, NYC - June 5, 2007 (CRED)
Pipettes @ highline Ballroom

a review by Nick Greto

I went to see the Pipettes at the new Highline Ballroom in NYC Tuesday night (June 5, 2007). I expected a polished, very modern, and sleek concert hall. That was exactly what I got - the ballroom was stacked with colorful lights, shiny tables and just newness all about.

My Pipettes expectations were very low. Prior to the show my thoughts on the band were sort of, "yea, retro, doo-wop thing with a sexy twist, a la Amy Winehouse, but ultimately boring songs".

I was way off base on that one.

I arrived around 9:45 pm, and the very talented opening act Smoosh (how old are those girls anyway?) was nearly halfway through their set. I was certain that we would have to wait for another act before the Pipettes took the stage - I expected to be very tired and non-productive at work the next day. Surprisingly, the Pipettes took the stage at 10:30 on the nose (their scheduled time).

I was drawn in immediately. In front of me stood three beautiful ladies with dreamy voices, dressed in polka dotted uniforms. Moments later it was evident that they also knew how to have fun, and more importantly - they knew how to make the crowd have fun.

They blasted through much of their material rapidly (most of the songs are under 3 minutes long). They joked about their "two favorite things". "Love" was the first, and they let us use our imagination to come up with the second. Their songs are danceable and catchy. They danced, and I danced. Even as I write this the songs are still stuck in my head.

Then in no time, the show was over. They closed the encore with "We are the Pippetes", and I couldn't help but feel a bit broken-hearted - but like any relationship that ends that way, I was very glad to have been involved at all

Earlier that night the girls played a free show in a store....

DISPATCH sells out 3 nights @ MSG, adds Webster Hall show

The weirdest thing happened recently (well, not that weird). A band called Dispatch sold out three nights in a row at Madison Square Garden, and I realized I had never even heard of them. I guess I slept through that part? Anyway, they added a fourth show at Webster Hall that goes on sale next week via Ticketmaster Auction (thx Matt). Are they friends with O.A.R.?

Handsome Furs reschedule dates, say sorry

Handsome Furs

Tickets are on sale for an August 7th Handsome Furs show at Mercury Lounge. More tour dates TBA. From MySpace:

Alexei here.
I want to extend my whole-hearted regrets to those who were planning on coming to our US shows this week. We are so wholly disappointed that we could not play for you. Dan and I have both been wildly excited for this tour. Really.
We are already working on scheduling shows south of the border for the near future. We cannot wait until it works out.
I am very sorry for all who lost out on this. I assure you we feel equal measures of disappointment and loss.
In this last six months, the fists of the US Border Protection Services and The Department of Homeland Security have come down pummelling; making it extremely difficult for touring bands to enter the country. Our record label and booking agent are working hard to get us different visas that will allow us to reschedule the East Coast tour and perform dates out to the Mid-West in July.
Again, we are really upset. We were really looking forward to performing these songs in front of a US audience.

last night - THE VEILS @ Mercury Lounge & CALIFONE @ Gramercy Theatre - pics

What did you do last night? First I went to the early Veils show at Mercury Lounge.

The Veils w/ top hat @ Mercury Lounge, NYC - June 7, 2007
The Veils @ Mercury Lounge

The Veils have great songs (even if one sounds exactly like a U2 song - even more so than that Polyphonic Spree song sounds like Blondie), and they were a lot of fun live, though at times I wished the band members could play better - especially during this one slower jazzy song that I like a lot on the album (the one he wrote in his mom's laundry) - it kind of fell apart.

Finn Andrews is an excellent frontman though. I was happy to see him wearing his hat - it may be permanently attached to his head - nobody knows for sure. Overall good stuff, and I'm still enjoying the new album. The cover of Bruce Springsteen's "State Trooper" was nice too. Music Snobbery has the whole setlist.

The Veils have Billy Corgan-like taste in bassists @ Mercury Lounge
The Veils @ Mercury Lounge

Then I ran to Gramercy Theater to see Calexico, I mean Califone (I always do that). The contrast was amazing - I was looking forward to both shows, and they were both great, but in different ways. Califone have that talent I was wishing for at the Veils. In fact Califone don't just have one ridiculously awesome drummer - they have two, and a whole band full of extremely talented musicians that put me in a trance - there were seats, and I was seated. Really, really nice....

Califone @ Gramercy Theater, NYC - June 7, 2007
Califone @ Gramercy Theatre

Tony was there. Really, really awkward....

Califone & Tony @ Gramercy Theater, NYC - June 7, 2007

But more on that tomorrow (or feel free to leave the story in the comments).

Music venue article in the NY Times

Bowery Presents
From left, Michael Swier, John Moore and Jim Glancy, the principal partners of Bowery Presents

In the NY TIMES:

An indie-rock tastemaker whose résumé includes early shows by the White Stripes and Arctic Monkeys, the Bowery Presents has become an unlikely local challenger to Live Nation and A.E.G. Live, the two dominant national promoters. But over the last year the Bowery Presents has caught the attention of the touring industry with concerts at major halls like Town Hall and Madison Square Garden and with a series of high-profile executive poachings.

Its competition is formidable. Live Nation, a $1.5 billion public company, puts on concerts at about two dozen locations in New York, including the Roseland and Hammerstein Ballrooms, the newly renamed Fillmore New York at Irving Plaza, and the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater. A.E.G. Live, the operator of the Nokia Theater in Times Square, is a unit of the Anschutz Company, led by the billionaire Philip F. Anschutz.

The article goes on to say:
  1. Bowery presents aquired "the 3,000-capacity former Exit dance club on West 56th Street, to reopen as a rock hall in October.
  2. That "with increased competition among promoters comes expensive bidding wars for talent, which could lead to higher ticket prices."
  3. Skeptics might question whether Bowery Presents bookings like Barry Manilow and John Mayer "could dilute the Bowery’s brand as a hip tastemaker. But the partners say they have no regrets."
The whole article HERE.

DAVID CROSS tonight & other upcoming NYC comedy shows

Klaus Kinski reports...

David Cross, Cheryl, and Louis CK in NYC - Apr 29, 2007 (CRED)
David Cross & Louis CK

Didn't get Franz Ferdinand tickets, huh? Neither did I. Well here are several opportunities to laugh ourselves out of the depths of despair....

UPCOMING SHOWS!

  • 6/7/07 through 6/9/07 The 13th Street Theater: SKETCHFESTNYC 2007!!: This is one of the most important comedy events this year and I urge you to see as much of these shows as you can. Comedy from all over the nation delivered to NYC for all to enjoy.
  • 6/7/07, 8:00pm UCB Theater: Variety Shac: Galapagos' monthly show packs its bags and comes to spend the night with UCBT. Music from host Shonali Bhowmik, comedy from Andrea Rosen, Chelsea Peretti, and Heather Lawless--and a Shac short film featuring all four. My idol Bobby Tisdale will be there too!
  • 6/7/07, 10:30pm The Green Room: FatSmiles: A new monthly comedy showcase is born tonight and features guests David Cross, Reggie Watts, God's Pottery, Andres DuBouchet, Laura Krafft. Hosted by John Roberts, admission is $12.00 or, if you say the code 'O.W.', you get a two-for-one deal!
  • 6/8/07, 8:00pm Queensborough Performing Arts Center: Todd Barry and Ted Alexandro: Ted and Todd hop on the 7-train to co-headline what promises to be a stellar show at Queensborough Performing Arts Center.
  • 6/8/07, 8:00pm Rififi: Greg Johnson: Greg Johnson's weekly comedy showcases at Rififi are hard to beat. This week your $5.00 will get you Michael Showalter, Eugene Mirman, Demetri Martin, Andy Blitz, Nick Kroll, and members of my favorite band The Forms
  • 6/9/07, 6:00pm The Pit: Kristen Schaal as You Have Probably Never Seen Her Before: Kristen Schaal is one of my favorites. Kristen Schaal is a favorite of Brooklynvegan readers. Spending a measly $5 to see her perform for 60-minutes seems like the greatest way to kick off a Saturday evening
  • 6/10/07, 8:00pm Rififi: I Like Attention: Comedy enfant terrible Max Silvestri is launching a new monthly show at Rififi aptly entitled I Like Attention. The premiere installment features an incredible line-up that includes Nick Kroll, Dave Hill, John Mulaney, and Sean O' Connor. More info at A Special Thing
  • 6/11/07, 8:00pm Rififi: Totally J/K with Joe and Noah: Joe and Noah always put on a great show and have wonderful guests. This week, in addition to themselves, they bring you Todd Barry, Jon Friedman, Gabe Liedman, and Taylor Williamson. This is the best thing you could possibly experience on a Monday.
  • 6/11/07 8:00pm, Mo Pitkins: YouTube Show & Tell with Julie & Jackie : Julie and Jackie are a mega-awesome comedy duo that put on some pretty remarkable shows. Their 6/11 show at Mo Pitkins features David Cross, Jon Benjamin, Leo Allen and Amelie Gillette
  • 6/13/07, 8:00pm Blender Theater at Gramercy: Flight of the Conchords with Eugene Mirman: New Zealand's finest and funniest motherfolkers not only have their own show on HBO, but they're playing some larger venue gigs.
  • 6/14/07, 8:00pm Blender Theater at Gramercy: Flight of the Conchords with Rhys Darby: Your second chance to see New Zealand's finest and funniest motherfolkers. New Zealand's Michael Winslow Rhys Darby opens

  • 6/15/07 and 6/16/07, See Calendar Comix: Paul F. Tompkins: One of my favorite west coast comedians is in NYC for Father's Day weekend. Don't know if he'll drop by any of NYC's smaller venues before these gigs, so this may be your only chance to catch him.

The Maccabees @ Knitting Factory, NYC - pics

The Maccabees @ Knitting Factory

Finally another danceable UK rock band I'm really excited about (see Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party) - one that will still likely play a bunch of smaller venues in the U.S. (doesn't count). They're currently on tour with Bloc Party (in Asbury Park TONIGHT), and like Bloc Party - The Maccabees played their first NYC at Knitting Factory (last night - June 6, 2007). Sold out, and full of rowdy British kids, the band tore through a set that left me wanting much more...

The Noisettes - also from the UK and on tour with Bloc Party - headlined the show, and I'm sorry to say, but they still don't do it for me.

2007 Primavera Sound Festival - day two (Saturday June 1)

Yesterday we heard about Evan Korte's first day at the Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona this past weekend. Here is day two....

Band of Horses get a new mic @ Primavera Sound 2007 (CRED)
Primavera 2007

Band of Horses: I wanted to catch Blonde Redhead and Black Mountain earlier in the day, but I had errands to run and couldn’t leave my apartment until about 9. Band of Horses played a pretty rousing set on the ATP stage, despite the fact that they had horrendous sound trouble. At first the band seemed to have a good sense of humor about it. (“Our microphones are shooting at us,” joked the bassist, “we didn’t know they were loaded. I’m surprised they even let us into the country.”) But when the lead singer’s mic stopped working completely on one song, (“Our Swords,” perhaps?) he stopped the song midway, threw the mic to the ground, and got a loud cheer from the audience. The mic was immediately replaced and the band finished their set in good spirits. There were a few highlights, including “The First Song,” “Great Salt Lake,” and “Funeral.” Well done, boys. Their new album comes out in October.

Maximo Park also played acoustic on the MySpace stage (CRED)
Primavera 2007

Maximo Park: Maximo Park was quite impressive. It’s clear that they are growing more comfortable as a live band. Their sound was tight and on point. Since they only have two albums, they played through almost all of their songs in about an hour and a half. The lead singer was very charming. He thanked the audience about a million times. He also made fun of himself (“Here’s another romantic song,” he said at one point, “I’m a bit of a sop.”) and begged us all to stay for Modest Mouse at midnight on the ATP stage. Both the front man and the keyboardist showed that they were just two indie kids that weren’t afraid to dance. Highlights included “Our Velocity,” “Girls Who Play Guitar,” “Apply Some Pressure,” “Limassol,” and “Going Missing.”

Los Planetas @ Primavera Sound 2007 (CRED)
Primavera 2007

Various Artists (Loa Planetas, notably): The couple of hours spent between Maximo Park and Built to Spill consisted of much stage jumping. I was about eight hundred feet back for the last couple of songs of Modest Mouse’s set. The festival should have booked them on the “Estrella Stage” - “All Tomorrow’s Parties Stage” was definitely too small for them. What I did hear, sounded pretty good, and surprisingly dancey. Then I met up with some friends at Girls Against Boys, and stayed for the first couple songs of Low's set (nice, but too slow for one o’clock in the morning). Next I went with some Spanish friends to see Los Planetas, a band that I had never heard of, but are legends in their native Spain. They blew me away. They’ve been around since the early 90’s and you can tell that they were a part of the shoegaze scene of that time. There was lots of reverb on the guitars, and fuzzy vocals. They're similar to My Bloody Valentine, Ride, and early Verve. I strongly recommend them to anyone who likes shoegaze.

Built to Spill @ Primavera Sound 2007 (CRED)
Primavera 2007

Built to Spill: The 3 am Built to Spill show was my last of the night. They played at the “All Tomorrow’s Parties Stage” and were unfortunately plagued by heavy sound problems. The sound people at the ATP stage had better get their shit together next year. Still, they made the best of it and played a great set. The members of the band may look like cavemen (no offense), but they have been around for almost fifteen years for a reason. They are fantastic musicians who play muscular guitar rock - all around good music that can be enjoyed by anyone. They may not be the most charismatic band in the world (I never heard Doug Marsch say anything beyond “Thanks” and “This is our last song”), but they sure do know how to floor people with their tight jamming. I debated staying around for Diplo who went on the CD Drome techno stage at 5, but my legs weren’t having it.

----

Tune in tomorrow for the exciting conclusion. More Primavera photos below....

ISSUE PROJECT ROOM closing on June 30 (moving) ---- (Turntables on the Gowanus?)

Issue Project Room

Issue Project Room (400 Carroll Street, Brooklyn, NY) will host its last show at its current location on June 30th.

SHARE celebrates ISSUE Project Room's final night in their current location – the unique silo on the banks of the Gowanus Canal. To celebrate IPR's time in the silo and their move to a new space, SHARE will run a multimedia open-jam, inviting everyone and anyone to join, including those who have performed at, visited, or simply love IPR. It will utilize Stephan Moore's 16-Channel Hemispherical Speaker System and IPR's cylinder structure for visual projections both inside and outside the space. Please come to play, hang out, or participate in many toasts! [Issue Project Room]
Other shows scheduled there this last month include Elliott Sharp, Keith Fullerton Whitman and Ikue Mori. OTBKB says....
I heard from my reliable source the move has something to due with the fact that the Gowanus Canal's flushing system is shutting down for repairs for an extended period of time and the big stink that will ensue. [Only The Blog Knows Brooklyn]
More information from that NY Times article that had Dan Deacon & Todd P in it.....

Perhaps the biggest wow factor lately comes from seeing a show at a former oil silo on a stretch of the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn.

Occupied for the last two years by Issue Project Room, an experimental arts organization, the silo is hidden behind an imposing metal gate with a small sign just off the Carroll Street bridge. Between the lapping (if occasionally stinky) water, the courtyard filled with poplar trees and the warm glow emanating from the two-story performance space — the top floor is reached by an exterior metal ladder — it’s as far from mainstream clubland as you can get.

Rebecca Moore, a singer and violinist active in the protests over the closing of the Lower East Side club Tonic, performed at the silo last week. “I am very grateful for Issue Project Room,” she said from the stage: a rug at the front of the room. “We couldn’t get away with playing staplers at many other places.”

And that’s exactly the point, said Suzanne Fiol, the founder of Issue Project Room. “We are trying to be a breeding ground for experimental work, and we need spaces like this to nurture it,” she said.

(Issue Project Room will leave the silo in July, but another group, MeanRed Productions, will move in. An outdoor concert series is planned; Nicodemus, a D.J. and founder of the traveling party Turntables on the Hudson, is already booked for Turntables on the Gowanus.) [reprinted at Failed Pilot]

Turntables on the Hudson's schedule currently lists no (smelly?) Gowanus events.

ETIENNE DE CRECY remix of CHROMEO's Tenderoni (MP3) + 2007 Tour Dates (w/ FLOSSTRADAMUS)

Chromeo

DOWNLOAD: Chromeo - Tenderoni (Etienne de Crecy remix) (MP3)

Etienne de Crécy is largely responsible for the electro inspired house sounds coming out of Paris right now. Back when everyone was doing their best filtered house Daft Punk impersonations, Etienne, the boys from Air, and Alex Gopher sped their bpm up, switched on a 303 and Super Discount was born. This remix of Chromeo's "Tenderoni" rips the track into a peak-time blog house anthem. - David Bruno

2007 Primavera Sound Festival - day one (Friday May 31)

Evan Korte reports back from Barcelona this past weekend...

Primavera Sound

My name is Evan. I’m a student at SUNY Purchase, which is a half an hour outside of New York City. I just finished studying abroad in Barcelona. A couple months ago, I booked tickets to the Primavera Festival. The location of the event is stellar. Not only is it in Barcelona, one of Europe’s best cities, but it is at Barcelona’s Forum, quite close to the beach and the ocean. There are two huge stages “Estrella Damm”, and “Rockdelux”), one above average stage(“All Tomorrow’s Parties” or ATP) and a few smaller stages focusing mostly on techno. All three of the main stages are ingeniously designed, with ample room for both standing up front and sitting back on grassy fields, with a beer in hand, watching the performers from the jumbotrons. After the hour or so wait to get my pass, my first concert of Primavera was Smashing Pumpkins.

The Smashing Pumpkins @ Primavera Sound 2007 (CRED)
Smashing Pumpkins @ Primavera Sound

The Smashing Pumpkins: I’m only 21 years old, so the Smashing Pumpkins were a bit before my time. They definitely have some good songs, but to tell you the truth, Billy Corgan’s voice has always gotten on my nerves. Nevertheless, their reunion tour is a pretty huge deal and I had to check them out. The band came out in those crazy alien outfits that you all have probably already seen. The new bassist is gorgeous. I guess Corgan has a thing for hot bassists. From what I could tell the new members played competently, but didn’t blow me away. The band played a pretty balanced set of new and old material, including “1979,” “Tonight, Tonight,” “Today,” “Zero” and “Disarm.” They rushed through a couple of songs and definitely seemed to be under-rehearsed at times, but when 80,000 people from around the world are singing along and jumping up and down, it’s hard to be negative. It was a nice start to an amazing festival.

A few days earlier....

The White Stripes @ Primavera Sound 2007 (CRED)
The White Stripes @ Primavera Sound

The White Stripes: Can we all just bow down to Jack White? Even when he’s giving people black eyes and cursing out radio DJ’s over leaked albums, the man can do no wrong. He is definitely the biggest rock star of my generation, hands down. The White Stripes played an absolutely electrifying set at 1:15. There were a few new songs thrown into the mix (“Icky Thump” was my favorite, since I’ve heard it at least five times and now place it among my favorite White Stripes tracks) but they played mostly older stuff from White Blood Cells and Elephant. Jack was in top form, wailing monstrous solos on his guitar, singing his heart out and talking a bit with the audience. He thanked us for letting them “try out” the new songs. It definitely says something about your stage presence when most of your audience doesn’t understand the lyrics, but they are still going crazy. They ended with “Seven Nation Army,” and the crowd could not have been happier. Highlights include “Black Math,” “Blue Orchid,” “Jolene,” “I Think I Smell a Rat,” “We’re Going to Be Friends” “Icky Thump” and “Seven Nation Army.” I can’t wait for the new album.

DOWNLOAD: Justice - D.A.N.C.E. (Blaze's Nightmarish Remix) (MP3)

Justice @ Primavera Sound 2007 (CRED)
Justice @ Primavera Sound

Justice: The White Stripes ended about three quarters of the way through Justice’s set. I didn’t get to hear them spin “D.A.N.C.E.” which is a shame because that is one of my favorite tracks at the moment. But they did play an extended version of that really cool remix of “We Are Your Friends” by Simian. It was impossible to resist dancing.

Girl Talk @ Primavera SoundGirl Talk: His DJ set was definitely one of the highlights of the festival. Not only did he play his insane hip-hop/rock mash ups, he was dancing like a maniac. It’s clear that this man has every intention of making sure that his DJ sets are the most happening parties around. You’d be hard pressed to find anyone there that wasn’t thoroughly enjoying themselves-getting down until their feet were sore. My favorite mash up of his was Biggy’s “Juicy” vocals over Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer”. At the end of the set he jumped down from the stage and was passed back and forth by the audience for at least three minutes. It was insanity. The crowd must have dropped him at least twice, and he had a pretty sizeable scratch on his back to prove it. God bless you Greg Gillis. By the time he ended it was about 4:30 and I decided to catch the metro home and rest for the jam packed second day.

Stay tuned for part 2 tomorrow....

VIDEO: Arctic Monkeys - 'Fluorescent Adolescent'

scummy man

‘Fluorescent Adolescent’ is the second single to be taken from ‘Favourite Worst Nightmare’ . The lyrical narration is supported by a striking video directed by Richard Ayoade (The IT Crowd/Nathan Barley) , starring Stephen ‘Scummy Man’ Graham (Snatch/Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels) and a rather scary bunch of clowns.

The Horrors' "secret show" at Pianos started late on a week night, but I was in the neighborhood anyway. Plus - despite many chances in the past, I still hadn't seen the UK buzz band live. I'm glad I went. Musically they might not be that great, but they definitely know how to put on a show...

Rufus has three more shows at the Gramercy this week, then a private magazine show somewhere in the city, and then Summerstage and other tour dates.

Wilco respond to (Volkswagen) "sell out' accusations

WilcoAs reported on Sunday, Wilco songs are playing in the new Volkswagen commercials. Wilco sent out this message:

As many of you are aware, Volkswagen has recently begun running a series of TV commercials featuring Wilco music.

Why? This is a subject we've discussed internally many times over the years regarding movies, TV shows and even the odd advertisement. With the commercial radio airplay route getting more difficult for many bands (including Wilco); we see this as another way to get the music out there. As with most of the above (with the debatable exception of radio) the band gets paid for this. And we feel okay about VWs. Several of us even drive them.

If you're keeping track, this is not the first time Wilco has licensed a song to or even been involved in a commercial -- most recently a TV spot for Telefonica Mobile in Spain used a Wilco song and some years prior Jeff Tweedy appeared in a campaign for Apple Computer. Wilco have licensed hundreds of songs to television shows and films worldwide... from festival-only indie films to major motion pictures and weekly TV shows.

Thus far the songs in the VW campaign are "The Thanks I Get" (a bonus track from Sky Blue Sky sessions, available for download via the Enhanced CD and via iTunes) and "You are my Face". We expect to have more details re: other songs shortly. The current plan (subject to change, like everything) is for 5 or 6 songs to be used.

That's it. Don't believe everything you read unless you read it here.

Commercial below...

AND.....

Who stayed all 27 hours at the Bang on a Can marathon?

The 26-hour Bang on a Can Marathon took place this past weekend at the World Financial Center in NYC.

6am @ the 26 Hour Bang on a Can Marathon, NYC - June 3, 2007 (CRED)
Bang on a CAn

Bang on a Can turned 20 this year. Marking the occasion it mounted its most audacious offering to date: scheduling a 26-hour marathon from Saturday night at 8 to Sunday night at 10. The performance was staged at the Winter Garden of the World Financial Center, a co-production with the primarily pop-oriented River to River Festival and arts>World Financial Center.........By Sunday morning the schedule had slipped by nearly an hour; even with one piece omitted near the end, the event ultimately clocked in at 27 hours 10 minutes. In August 2007, New York City based Modiba Productions will release Vieux Farka Touré Remixed: UFOs Over Bamako. A stalwart follow-up to his self-titled U.S. debut album (2/13/2007), Vieux Farka Touré collaborates with a select team of top producers presenting brilliant illustrations of his signature North African Sahara Desert blues. The family of remixers include Cheb i Sabbah, Karsh Kale, Nickodemus and several other ingenious contributors. Unlike the majority of remix records, Vieux Farka Touré Remixed: UFOs Over Bamako is a classic, fully realized album all on its own. An absolute standout contemporary interpretation of age-old Malian rhythms and melodies, Vieux Remixed is an eclectic mix of big-beat dance floor crushers, hip-hop infused funk tracks, trancey breaks and dubbed-out electronica.

Produced by Global Beat Fusion author, New York City based journalist and disc jockey Derek Beres, Vieux Farka Touré Remixed: UFOs Over Bamako truly embraces the essence of Vieux's music, and readies it for the international dance floor. One of this year's top-selling world music albums, Vieux Farka Touré's debut features a groundbreaking recording effort by the son of internationally celebrated and Grammy Award-winning guitarist Ali Farka Touré. The release marks the only existing recordings of father and son playing together, and is the final studio material of the late Ali Farka Touré. Ali appears on two tracks, as does kora master Toumani Diabaté. Highly revered as the new voice of Malian music, Vieux Farka Touré pays homage to his father and shares his ancestral breed of desert blues with the world.

Just as the legendary Ali Farka Touré was heavily influenced by his musical surroundings, Vieux himself was exposed to music of the Western world from an early age. Growing up listening to reggae, American rock n' roll and later, dance music, Vieux's creative spirit was destined to reach far beyond the borders of Bamako. Vieux comments, "I am working to follow my father's path, but that path continues into new areas. I am of a new generation, so there are things that inspire me in today's world that I put in my music, just as he did in his time."

Modiba Productions, a music production company and record label committed to the social and economic empowerment of Africa and its Diaspora, operates in impressively innovative ways. Launching a Creative Commons remix contest and pre-releasing tracks from Vieux Farka Touré Remixed: UFOs Over Bamako to such music portals as MTV Urge and Calabash, they've utilized the emerging technological playing field to create early buzz in online and DJ communities. With an upwards of 80 submissions, two CC remixes are featured on Vieux Remixed. Modiba Productions are also the creators of "ASAP: The Afrobeat Sudan Aid Project," which has raised over $140,000 to fund humanitarian relief efforts in Darfur. 10% of the proceeds from Vieux's debut and remix albums goes directly to Bee Sago, a UNICEF-affiliated organization specializing in the manufacture and distribution of insecticide-treated mosquito nets to children and pregnant mothers in Mali to fight against the spread of malaria.

Like father, like son, Vieux Farka Touré recently worked with producer/guitarist Ry Cooder for the soundtrack of the upcoming Mike Nichols film, "Charlie Wilson's War." Ali Farka Touré's 1994 Grammy winning collaboration w/ Ry Cooder, Talking Timbuktu (World Circuit), drew much attention to his music, further exposing the acclaimed guitarist to the world. Vieux Farka Touré is set to hit the road this Summer and Fall for North American and UK band dates including a tour with Tinariwen ("Festival of the Desert Tour") and select dates with Buddy Guy and Pee Wee Ellis.

A captivating new talent audaciously carrying on the quintessential North African traditions and rhythms he discovered from his father, Vieux Farka Touré manifests a modern legend in the making, ushering in the next generation of Malian blues.

Modest Mouse @ Primavera in Barcelona, June 1, 2007 (CRED)
Modest Mouse @ Primavera 2007

Modest Mouse was formed in 1993 in Issaquah, Wash. After years of acclaim for its independent recordings, it broke through to a mass audience with the edgy but upbeat hit single "Float On" in 2004.

Many of the band's old fans were uneasy about seeing their heroes with a hit, and the cries of "sellout" increased this year when "American Idol" contestants sang "Float On" in a music video sponsored by Ford.

His manager warned him that allowing the song to be used in that way could be a bad PR move, but Brock says he couldn't resist the opportunity.... [San Jose Mercury News]

Largehearted Boy's Interesting CD Releases This Week

Afghan WhigsI am usually not a fan of compilations or career retrospectives, but the Afghan Whigs': Unbreakable: A Retrospective 1990-2006 is my most anticipated release of the week. Hands down, the Afghan Whigs are the most dynamic live bad I have ever seen, and I am first in line to pick up any Greg Dulli-related release.

Other releases I can strongly recommend this week include Architecture in Helsinki's single Heart It Races (single), Carina Round's Slow Motion Addict, Get Him Eat Him's Arms Down, Hallelujah the Hills' Collective Psychosis Begone, Long Blondes' Someone To Drive You Home, The Ladybug Transistor's Can't Wait Another Day, Moviola's Dead Knowledge, Pelican's City of Echoes, and Pissed Jeans' Hope for the Men.

Plenty of reissues are out this week, including the Pretenders' Get Close and Learning to Crawl (both remastered), David Bowie's The Best Of 1980-1987 and Young Americans (both remastered), and the Beach Boys' Live at Knebworth.
