Booker T & the MG's & Sharon Jones @ Rockefeller Park
danfun snapped some shots at the show last night....

Booker T & the MG’s were sooo awesome; when they started playing “Green Onions” and “Big Train” on stage, people were flippin’ out! There were a bunch of random women dancing all over the place… it was sort of amusing/funny/cute. And when you throw in Sharon Jones for a touch of soul (especially with a song like “Sitting on the Dock” by Otis) and lots of vocal improvs… it was damn near perfect. [cdnpio]They do it again today at noon.
Other shows last night: Paul McCartney & Franz Ferdinand

the mg's were good musicians, but that certainly didn't make them good.
sharon jones was completely worth sitting through the mg's boring instrumentals for, however.

Bwah! is right. The opening instrumentals were pretty snoozy, though Green Onions and Time is Tight (covered by the Clash on Black Market Clash) were highlights for me. But the pedigree! Sheesh! Donald Duck Dunn on bass and Steve Cropper on guitar - read the history: http://www.history-of-rock.com/booker_t_and_the_mgs.htm

It's stunning to me that anyone would need to be reminded of the pedigree of the musicians involved. But, nevermind.
I'm a big fan of Stax, and these days i'd rather track down another live otis redding or sam & dave bootleg than listen to most new stuff. and I highly regret not seeing the Neil Young tour where Booker T & the MG's were his backing band.
While there's no questioning the talent of the musicians involved, I'd be real hard pressed to call last night's performance "sooo awesome" and have to take serious issue with the statement that people were "flipping out" when they played "Green Onions." There was, of course, applause of recognition at one of the most recognizable hits, and a few couples with great soul/60s dance moves and plenty of people with lame hippie ones; I saw random guys dancing, but not random women (except moms with their kids).
"Damn near perfect" is a wildly generous description, and imho, in order to be accurate, the band would have included horns. If the OP had a great time at the show, that's cool; but let's not inflate a perfectly fine evening into something it wasn't.

Just got back from seeing the Brooklyn Metrotech show. What a great great and yes awesome show. Boring instrumentals? Oh for christs sake you dummies who said that about last night's show. Actually who cares what you think because i can bet you that most of the musicians in bands you love would kill to have even one of the MG's in their band. I have seen them before and another chance to listen to Steve Cropper play live is worth it anyday. Sharon Jones was amazing as always. What a force. Great Great afternoon
Now please do not rain and bring on the Neville Brothers
