DISPATCH sells out 3 nights @ MSG, adds Webster Hall show
The weirdest thing happened recently (well, not that weird). A band called Dispatch sold out three nights in a row at Madison Square Garden, and I realized I had never even heard of them. I guess I slept through that part? Anyway, they added a fourth show at Webster Hall that goes on sale next week via Ticketmaster Auction (thx Matt). Are they friends with O.A.R.?

Just checked them out on Myspace. They are terrible.

theyre one of those college hippie bands that sort of allow frat boys to 'keep it real' and 'keep them in touch with the scene' when they move to nyc and start date raping.
Posted by Anonymous | June 8, 2007 1:53 PM
1:53 describes them perfectly.
Posted by Anonymous | June 8, 2007 1:56 PM
yea, dispatch is garbage, i had some friends in college who loved them. just like the above poster said, they are like a frat boy jam band. hippies dont even like these guys...you can file them under that same lame ass genre with OAR, pat mcgee, etc.
even though i think they suck i do give them a lot of respect...they have virtually no mainstream promotion or contracts and have a huge fanbase. they disbanded a few years ago and these msg shows are their first gigs in several years which is probably why it sold out
Posted by Anonymous | June 8, 2007 1:59 PM
Yeah you have to give them credit even if its just a place for frat boys to unite. They sold out 3 nights of MSG and The White Stripes with Grinderman opening still has not even sold out their one night there.
Kinda depressing.
Posted by Anonymous | June 8, 2007 2:03 PM
No idea what these guys sound like, but if I were a fan who'd just spent money on an MSG show, I'd be pretty pissed to find out after the fact that I could have paid the same price (or less?) to see the band at Webster.
Posted by Steve | June 8, 2007 2:13 PM
this is also a dispatch reunion show, meaning this might be *gasp* the last time you'll ever be able to see them again in the history of music!
at their last final concert--free in boston somewhere--100,000+ fans showed up.
the still suck though.

wow such haters. Listen, I'm not fond of them or their scene either, but they have a few catchy tunes and somehow sold out msg three nights. 100% of the ticket sales is going to fight disease and famine in Zimbabwe http://www.dispatchmusic.com/zimbabwe/zimbabwe.shtml
My good friend worked with refugees in Africa for several years, and while I know there is a chance some of this money unfortunately will get into the hands of the wrong, corrupt people, at least they're trying to raise awareness for something bigger than themselves. i really like BV, but also wish everyone wasn't so negative all the time.
Posted by Joe | June 8, 2007 2:26 PM
yeah they are horrible for sure
i knew way too many idiot dispatch "fans" in college. same morons that loved tripe like OAR. the fact that OAR and dispatch have both sold out MSG is a very sad statement about our generation.

Anon 1:53 - What a great description. Dispatch is a band whose tour bus should fly off a cliff. Actually, strike that. I would rather force them to sit under the Dave Matthews tour bus.
Posted by Anonymous | June 8, 2007 2:26 PM
Dispatch are from Greenwich, Connecticut. If this were ancient Rome, they might be senators.

Dispatch is terrible, but if 100% of the ticket sales is going to fight disease and famine in Zimbabwe they are solid peeps.
I won't be going to the show, because I don't like the music---but at least they stand for something.
That's more than I can say for a lot of bands, even a lot of bands I like musically.

"Yeah you have to give them credit even if its just a place for frat boys to unite. They sold out 3 nights of MSG and The White Stripes with Grinderman opening still has not even sold out their one night there.

I think that's more about the venue then the band. If they were playing the bowery 5 or more nights in a row they'd sell out all of them.
Posted by Anonymous | June 8, 2007 2:41 PM
you guys are such snobs. I'm not into dispatch but why hate on them? They didn't "sell out" and sign to a major label. They're doing these three shows for charity and they have a lot of fans. it's not their fault people like them. It's not like they changed their sound to try to appeal to the masses. They just play what they like. Just because they're not indie or obscure doesn't mean there should be a negative feeling towards a band doing three nights of sold out shows for charity.
Posted by Anonymous | June 8, 2007 2:43 PM
sorry, let me clarify. i wasn't saying that dispatch are sell outs. i was saying that the white stripes would sell out the bowery on multiple nights - people aren't buying tix to the WS show at msg show because the venue sucks.
Posted by from anon 2:41 | June 8, 2007 2:57 PM
I am not hating, I just flat out think their music is the worst thing that has happened to our society in the past 10 years, and that includes John Mark Carr not being the killer.
Posted by DK | June 8, 2007 3:27 PM
shows at MSG can actually be really good, (sound, vibe, etc) especially if you're on the floor or the act knows how to put on a show. i've seen ac/dc, coldplay from the seats and they definitely pulled through very well.
Posted by Anonymous | June 8, 2007 3:30 PM
"people aren't buying tix to the WS show at msg show because the venue sucks."
yeah, MSG sucks. totally. are you fucking kidding me? some of you kids are really clueless
Posted by mike | June 8, 2007 3:37 PM
Err, ok... are you suggesting that Madison Square Garden, or any 15,000+ arena for that matter, is an ideal place to see and hear a band? If so, I'd love to partake in whatever you've been smoking, eating or shooting up.
Posted by James | June 8, 2007 3:44 PM
@ DK 3:27
That was fucking hilarious.
Posted by Anonymous | June 8, 2007 3:52 PM
ideal place to see a band? maybe not, but to say that it sucks is just retarded. as far as arenas go it's one of the best places to see a concert in the world.
Posted by MSG | June 8, 2007 3:57 PM
Yeah of course the venue sucks. There is no doubt about that but that is again why you have to give Dispatch credit. Their fans go to see them no matter what shitty venue they are at. And im betting that the majority of people going to see the shows are not thinking "Oh the sound sucks at MSG but its for charity so im going" No they have loyal dedicated fans who might or might not be cro-magnons. On the other hand, it seems White Stripes fans are not as dedicated and are not going to the show for whatever reason.
So, give Dispatch some credit. Wanna make a bet the stripes or any other band wishes they had this kind of fan base?
Posted by Anonymous | June 8, 2007 3:59 PM
MSG certainly isn't ideal, but it's far from sucky. I've only been to about a half dozen shows there, but in my experience, the sound has always been great and I have always been able to see, even with rear floor seats (which is nice, since I'm short).
My main problem with shows at MSG is most of the acts I've seen there seem dwarfed by the stage and unsure what to do with all the room they're given. They just turn into little people in a big space. The act who I didn't feel that way about was Roger Waters, probably because he had so much special effects stuff going on.
Posted by Anonymous | June 8, 2007 4:02 PM
I have no problem going to the Garden for a show (though it's been a while). But Dispatch is selling its *charity* show at $39.50/ticket. Jack White's taking $10 more than that per person for himself. Never marry a model, kids.
Posted by J | June 8, 2007 4:27 PM
Unfortunately my girlfriend loves them and I got tickets for the third night in MSG a long, long time ago. I think they are ok at best, sometimes good. But I bet live they are good. I am prety pissed that I could have paid the same money to see them at webster. oh well.
Posted by Daniil | June 8, 2007 6:05 PM
What is wrong with you people? First off...I didnt even know who dispatch was till I saw they sold out three shows. Then i looked real quick. yea, i didnt like them but hey, obviously some people do. Would you rather those frat boy wanna be hippies ruin your scene? I sure as hell dont.
They could have made a million dollars doing those shows but there doing it for an amazing charity. That is more then you idiots will ever do for anyone in your pathetic life's of bloging.
and by the way, a couple white stripes shows at the bowery doesnt equal the amount of seats in the garden. maybe like 20 shows at your sacred bowery. Lets face it, musicians need jobs to. It just happens to be playing music. we all wanna be millionares.
and lets face it...you would all by tickets to a concert at msg if your preshus arcade fire played.
peace out, when do i get my own blog?

This is a series of reunion shows at MSG that sold out SEVEN months in advance. It's not my taste, but I have to say I was impressed that they a) sold out three nights at MSG without ANY media coverage and b) put on these shows solely for the purpose of raising money for charity. As far as I can tell the band have other careers now and are doing this solely in an attempt to help the world. What, besides it not being your particular taste, can you say is bad about that?
Posted by anon | June 9, 2007 2:29 AM
"kid, put a space after your comma. god, ignorant and studid"
AHAHAHAH what a schmuck. All he had on me was a space before the comma and then he goes and shows his idiocy again. To make matters worse he uses the old drunk typing excuse rather than admit to his lack of intelligence.
Again OMG JUST OMG
And by the way, I do not think anyone was saying the shows were not for a good cause. I believe the consensus was simply that the band's music sucks and their fans while loyal are made up of cretin idiot frat boy jocks.

but really msg doesnt suck. some bands belong, some dont. the place has history and playing that stage would be a landmark in anyone's career. I've been to some kick ass shows at msg and some kick ass shows at bowery ballroom.
thats my point.

I would have rather seen all of Zimbabwe starve and succumb to infectious disease than to have seen the day when this band sold out three nights at Madison Square Garden. At least that would have let me know that my musical taste truly is the way of the divine light and that God thinks pretty much the same way about Africans as I do...
... just kidding! I've never heard of this band before either.

The level of pretentiousness in the comments of this thread has inspired me to never read the comments of any BV post again. As soon as your high and mighty Arcade Fire plays 1 charity show at Bowery, let alone 3 shows at MSG plus a 4th at Webster, then you can talk about how they're actually doing something good for society, and not just giving narrow minded hipsters a reason to feel above everyone else. If you don't like Dispatch's music, fine, but do we really need to hear about it? It makes absolutely no contribution to the thread to tell us how:
"Just checked them out on Myspace. They are terrible."
"theyre one of those college hippie bands that sort of allow frat boys to 'keep it real' and 'keep them in touch with the scene' when they move to nyc and start date raping."
"i knew way too many idiot dispatch "fans" in college. same morons that loved tripe like OAR. the fact that OAR and dispatch have both sold out MSG is a very sad statement about our generation"
You all really just need to grow up. Sorry that not every single thing BV posts here is tailored to your very specific taste in music.
And to anyone who is making posts based on someone's grammar or spelling mistakes, get the hell over it, this is a blog.

Actually Arcade Fire gave two dollers of every ticket sold to an organization that i think is for sudanese refugees but i can not fully remember. And the arcade Fire tickets have been realitivly cheap. So factor out the two doller from each ticket in multiple nights at 4,000 person venues and also the cost of touring with a nine piece band including airfare and hotels and also money for themselves. I'd say there pretty generous

lets do some math...
arcade fire $35 ticket
3, 4000 person venue shows= 12,000 total purchased tickets
12,000 X 2= 24,000 charity
12,000 X 33= 396,000 band profit
dispatch $39.50 ticket
3, 15,000+ person venues (we wont count the webster hall charity auction)= 45,000 total purchased tickets
45,000 x 39.50= 1,777,500 charity
band profit=0
lets look at the score board
dispatch 1
arcade fire 0

Hey dopey, it was not spelled wrong. The word is CRETIN and it was spelled correctly. It means idiot or in other words YOU.
OH yeah and once again, Dispatch is doing a very noble thing which you should give them credit for. As well as the fact that their fans are super loyal and dedicated. But yes, their music sucks balls and said fans are frat boy jock morons.

I don't like Dispatch either, but they're a fascinating story...they were one of the first bands to publicly embrace Napster, and sat beside Shawn Fanning when he testified in Congress, as well as playing a Napster benefit tour. They are the only unsigned band ever to headline MSG, much less sell out three nights, all in a matter of minutes. And, as people have pointed out, they are literally giving ALL of the proceeds to charity.
It's a pretty amazing story, which makes me wish I were capable of liking their music, which unfortunately I'm not. :) But if nothing else they're a model of what would have been possible if more bands had embraced the changes in the music business rather than fighting them.
And yeah, I'm not sure even the Stripes could sell out a month at Bowery, which would be roughly equivalent to a single MSG sellout...

Dispatch is actually a great band, and I'm not a frat boy. I saw a show in Boston years ago and that's how I got into them. The General is a great anti-war statement and Elias is just a great song period.

Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2007 10:21 AM
Re: "Fratastic":
Agreed, everything frat boys like automatically has to suck. If I'm thinking about liking something, I go to a frat house, take a poll, and if 50% or more of the frat boys like it, I decide not to. In this way, I've decided that all of classic rock sucks, as well as beer. It's so much cooler to like classical music and fine wines, since frat boys aren't into that kinda stuff normally. It's also really cool not to think for yourself, never to relax and go with the flow despite what the frat boys like, and to be unable to appreciate a band with an interesting sound and a social conscience. I'm so cool.
Posted by Anonymous | July 1, 2007 11:47 PM
After reading this thread I can only say that I'm glad I didn't follow the indie goons into their bad fashion, stupid looking glasses and half-baked logic on life. Some of you, regardless of what school you went to or your SAT score are quite possibly some of the dumbest folks I've encountered. Who gives a shit if this band sucks. They sold out the Garden for three nights and most of us never heard of them. And don't tell me that your beloved underground phenom wouldn't sell their sole to George Bush to be able to do the same. I checked these guys out and it's true, their music sounds like doo doo but they must've done something right to be able to sell that joint out, unlike Morrissey!
Neo-Hippie Frat Boys must've kicked the shit out of some of you to hold so much hate for these guys. Anyway, I hope they kicked your ass good!
Be Good, JP

great math, Mr. I've Never Booked a Real Show In My Life!!!
what you all forget is the cost of DOING a show is factored into the ticket price. All the beer backstage, the electricity for the amps, the wages for the workers ALL comes out of the profit. its actually simple macro economics, if any of ya'll paid attention in college. keep thinking what you wanna think, or what the publicists want you to think...
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2007 11:08 AM
The point still stands that the band takes home no profit, but puts on an entertaining show for three nights of a full house at MSG, and one at Webster Hall, while the remaining profit after overhead goes to an impoverished nation. I think that's pretty cool, and I'm guessing it goes a lot farther than anything any of the amateur critics here have done in their lifetime for a charitable cause.
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2007 11:29 AM
not denying the "point still stands", what i'm saying is when you actually break down the numbers, its not as much cash as you think. yes, its very pious of Dispatch and i give them props for having the balls to do it (and for Bowery Presents to book it)...i posted my macro-economics point because i feel that 98% of the jaded fucks on this blog (or any blog for that matter) think the artists all bathe in cash like it is cold tap water. ticket prices are high because it costs big $$$ to put on a big show. the cost of doing a show at Webster Hall could be $10K, to do a show at MSG could cost $250k. what all this means is you should be more pissed at big artists charging big $$ for small gigs.

dispatch is a great band who many, 100,000 in boston and clsoe to 50,000 in msg are going to see so for all you haters, you know nothing about music. Sorry if they are not "hippie" enough for you or too mainstream but for all u idiots, they were never signed, they are giving all their proceeds away and they play fun, chill music that is hard to come by. So for all the people who wrongly commented, go screw yourselves
Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2007 4:41 PM
Everyone here who is hating on Dispatch needs to stop. If you don't like the band, fine for you, but you don't need to be such jerks about it.
Not every person likes every band, so get over it. I happen to like dispatch, and no, that does NOT make me a frat boy who date rapes and I take insult to anyone who says it does.
Even if a band sells out (which btw, dispatch hasn't) who cares? It's not your fault or problem and you can still think that you're cool by only listening to indie bands- which has turned into the "in" thing btw now, so you guys are all guilty of anything you're criticizing other people for.
oh, and I dare someone to try to rip apart my argument with a comment like, "you forgot a comma idiot" or some shit like that.
Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2007 9:39 AM
As soon as I realized that everyone here was operating under the assumption that the White Stripes of all bands are somehow far superior to anyone, I knew I was in the presence of complete idiots.
The problem with our society is not that conscious bands are selling out shows for a good cause, it's that all of you people sit at home on your computers all day and put your energy into being negative.
Here's a small fact... real fans of Dispatch can't stand OAR and think they are as wank as everyone on here says they are. Please don't put them in the same category.
And what's with this "hippie frat boy" nonsense? Hippies don't join frats, and guys in frats listen to mainstream rap. Maybe the scenester frat guys in boston and nyc listen to more 'hippie' music, which ends up being jack johnson or whatever else they read about in rollingstone.
Everyone here should go outside and appreciate something of value. It's much better for you than wasting away putting negative thoughts into your computers.
I wish I could stick around and bs with you kind folk, but I'll be in rainier nat'l park all day, and probably will never return to this website. If you want to get behind something worthwhile, forget the indie music shit and learn about sustainable agriculture.

OK, I love dispatch...Im not going to lie. I can justify it from my prospective too.
-Pete is a GREAT bassist, and Chad can bust out some solid grooves too.
-The three guys have awe inspiring vocal harmony.
-The band sings about issues that are both important to them, and pertinent to the world.
-I like reggae. I like rock. Thus, I like Dispatch's version of reggae-rock.
-I am friends with brad, and knowing him makes me appreciate his music all the more.
Here is some advice to those that say they hate them after only listening to the myspace songs:
I know where your coming from...I personally dislike Dispatch's most well known songs (the general is seriously annoying), so judge a band based on more than just a few seconds of the small selection they offer on myspace.
And to rebuttal the feeling that all Dispatch fans are jocks, my other favorite bands are Guster, From Autumn to Ashes, Silverstein, rage Against the Machine, Victor Wooten, Adam Nitti, Glassjaw, Head Automatica, Poison the Well, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Phil Keaggy, a trance band called Milhaven, a weird swede named Maati Palaneen, and Buddha Bar.
Music is objective. There is beauty in all forms.

You just illustrated to everybody your complete lack of musical taste.

good gosh...
Lack of musical taste? I apparently have a taste in music, since I like music, and listen to it. As I previously said, music is objective...there is NO way to set a standard on what makes music good. Technically, the definition of music is a set of sound waves that when combined are recognizable and pleasurable to the ear. With that said, different people will have different prospectives on what is pleasurable.
So how then does one qualify what is good music? One of the only plausible answers would be to see which type of music has the most people that enjoy it...in which case, Brittany Spears and Eminem would most likely be listed as the best music in America.
Im curious to know which of the artists/bands mentioned in my previous post you have actually heard of. I am guessing less than half...maybe 2/3.
Furthermore, I am a trained classical violist, so if you want to be elitist when it comes to music, you better fine someone who doesn't love what is popularly known as the most complex, most refined, most artistic, and most historic genre.
In closing, I probably like most of the bands you like.

you people are obviously ignorant if you continue to say dispatch sucks and what not. idk about this frat boy thing so i wont comment on that but some of you probably dont like their music because you arent into reggae-rock. so you are obviously going to say you dont like them.

DISPATCH IS THE BEST FUCKING BAND FUCK ALL OF YOU WHO HATE THEM

It is utterly disgusting that people truly believe that their musical "taste" is superior to others. It is a completely opinion based topic.
If you hate Dispatch because of their fans, get a life and discrediting and bashing a band because of a few band experiences you had with those who enjoy their music. If you hate Dispatch because of their music, then go listen to something else.
I can guarantee you that very few Dispatch fans are littering blogs about the White Stripes or Mogwai with defamatory remarks. They spend time enjoying the music that they love. Maybe you all should think about doing the same instead of dwelling on your insecurities.
