El-P @ the Fillmore (Irving Plaza)
El-P @ the Fillmore (Irving Plaza), NYC - June 9, 2007

A review by Angry Citizen
This is the El-Product summer...El-P plays Pittsburgh on June 13th, and then Bonnaroo two days later. Videos below.... Tags: angrycitizen, El-PThe air was so thick Saturday night, that it’s going take weeks to clean off the thick film of hip-hop lathered on the walls of the Fillmore. Your run-of-the mill hip-hop concert consists of an agitated performer hyperaware of the impending doom of his genre; a performer who consciously takes the pulse of hip-hop every thirty seconds, only to lash out at any perceived threat like a cranky old man. Instead, El-P chose to take the pulse of America and lash out at the forces destroying us from within.
EL-P’s on another level like that…
The creative energy he supplied was forward moving even though the subject matter he covered was steeped in apocalyptic rage. Over the years, EL-P has crafted an aesthetic which wholly manifested itself into a perfected visual of doom and disease. He graced the stage covered in bloody scabs, donning a monkey suit. The atomic bomb landed and EL-P was the only survivor. He railed against strip malls and the homogeneous tendency of Middle America. He told tales of late night drug runs on the Lower East Side, which yielded the shittiest coke on earth. He delivered a scathing tract against the Bush administration and indicted them for the pile of bullshit they sold America. El-P’s America is a dirty place. His anti-war screed lead into a blistering version of 'Up All Night' which produced a mushroom cloud of energy and vitriol. As the mosh pit reached its zenith, an exhausted El-P collapsed on stage and laid motionless representing the "thousands of soldiers that have died for lies." His splayed corpse was soundtracked by Radiohead’s ‘The National Anthem’ and a Tribe Called Quest's ‘Can I Kick It.’ When the crowd chanted "Yes you can", El-P rose from the dead and finished off his vision of 21st century America in all its fucked up glory.

Wow he did the same thing at Bowery with the collapsing on the ground. Damn, i thought it was spontaneous. Kinda dissapointing it was part of the "act"

This writer takes himself way too seriously. His writing is too thick and he needs to ease up on the adjectives.

-Purple prose
"From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
A term of literary criticism, purple prose is used to describe passages, or sometimes entire literary works, written in prose so overly extravagant, ornate or flowery as to break the flow and draw attention to itself. Purple prose is sensuously evocative beyond the requirements of its context. It also refers to writing that employs certain rhetorical effects such as exaggerated sentiment or pathos in an attempt to manipulate a reader's response."

haha i swear to god, that review exemplifies your typical el-p/def jux fan. they think he is on "some next level shit" and that everything he touches is so progressive and amazing. not trying to get on the writers case too much but i really didnt really take away anything from how the show actually was.

So he was in better spirits than he was at the plug-awards? He quit after two songs there because we were "waiving our arms in the aiiir."

I'll tell you what. It's way more fun to get excited about an artist of el-p's caliber then about 87% of the ho-hum, boring bland ass, middling bands that are so generously hyped up on this blog. I'll take El-p hands down over the oceans of wack-ass bands raved about on this website. It's just more interesting. Yeaaaaahhh! Clap Your Hands Say Yea and Voxtrot. Fart.

So Television is playing for Free this Sat at Central Park. Don't see anything mentioned about here on ye olde BV except some gushy nonsense about Paul McCartney. Come on BV!

I'd rather read prose that's somewhat carried away and over-reaching that most of the flat, uninspired droning that passes for music writing on the web and in the newsstands. besides, it sounds as if the prose's purply ambitions were more than matched by the subject matter -- collapsing on stage in scripted protest of the war, etc.

I liked the review

After seeing El-P act like a spoiled brat at the plug awards, I just cant get into his music. I've never seen anyone get more angry over the crowd not 'raising da roofe'

yeah, the review was dramatic but so is EL-P and his new album. it's a direct approximation (i assume what the reviewer was going for). And some of the "purple" prose such as "doom and disease" are actually EL-P lyrics. recognize.

I just watched the video for "Smithereens". Thanks for that, btw. Guess what's NOT gonna be aired on MTV. Not even MTV2, or Subterranean.

Dude pretty much singlehandedly creates two ridiculous albums; Fantastic Damage, I'll Sleep When Your Dead, and laces some of the sickest production work I've ever heard on Cannibal Ox's Cold Vein album and people still have the nerve to hate on this guy. Honestly, fuck that shit. The world's a deeply, profoundly disturbing place and it's good that there are certain artists out that choose to bring that to the forefront. Being uncompromising in your artistic vision is not necessarily a bad thing. Oh, and boo-fucking-hoo to those complaining about him cutting it short at the lameass Plug Awards. That shit makes me respect him more. Maybe he had David Cross overload.
