FEIST & GRIZZLY BEAR & KEVIN DREW played Town Hall, playing Conan ++ BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE ("Spirit If") playing McCarren Pool (w/ Feist) & touring
First of all, the Feist & Grizzly Bear show at Town Hall last night (June 11, 2007) was so good. I can't decide if it was the best Grizzly Bear show I ever saw, but it was definitely beyond a doubt the best Feist show I've ever been to (I've seen them both a bunch of times now). Feist's new material is so much more fun live - the old stuff still felt like the hits, but the new stuff was where it was at...
Feist @ Town Hall, NYC - June 11, 2007

Grizzly Bear @ Town Hall, NYC - June 11, 2007

...and as if it wasn't special enough, (Leslie's boyfriend?) Kevin Drew came out to play Broken Social Scene's Lover's Spit with Feist - he didn't sing though - just played piano, but it still felt great.
A few more pics @ Flickr. More tomorrow.
Feist also mentioned she'd be playing 1234 on Conan today, and bringing some friends along to sing backup. At least some of those friends will be all four members of Grizzly Bear - her tourmates.
Feist didn't mention, but the little flyers they were handing out did, that she and Kevin Drew will be back to play a (NOT-free) show at McCarren Pool in Brooklyn on August 29th. Tickets are on sale Friday at noon, and the show is billed on the flyer as "Feist with special guest Broken Social Scene performing Kevin Drew's 'Spirit If...'".......
The press release that came out Friday....
On September 18th Arts&Crafts will release, BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE PRESENTS KEVIN DREW, "SPIRIT IF..."PreviouslyKevin Drew's "Spirit If..." was recorded over the last two years at Ohad Benchetrits house in between social scene tours and day-to-day life.It was produced by Ohad Benchetrit, Kevin Drew, and Charles Spearin.
This is the first in the BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE PRESENTS series.Brendan Canning and company are currently recording the second in Toronto. It will be released early next year.
Drew and Canning, the two co-founders of Broken Social Scene decided to approach making records as solo projects. In the process the social scene community took part and played key supporting roles, thus giving birth to this series.
Along with the BSS crew, Drew has invited many other guests to perform on "Spirit If...".
The record unfolds like aemotional comic book. It's Drew's song-writing and all his favourite topics are addressed: fucking, fighting, fearing and hope. FFFH.
This fall Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning, Justin Peroff, along with new members will commence the "BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE PERFORMS" touring series. They will tour select songs from this album and a others from this series.

For those who were at the show last night, around what time did each set start at?
Posted by concerned_citizen | June 12, 2007 7:17 AM
Feist on around 9:16p. Not sure about grizzly.
Posted by Anonymous | June 12, 2007 8:12 AM
grizzly at 8pm sharp. Feist at 9:15pm sharp. Town hall is very strict about shows being on time.

Feist was amazing, adorable and her voice sounds like melted sugar!

can't wait for this new realm of BBS music! very exciting!

I'm pretty sure that Kevin Drew is gay, no?.... making him an unlikely candidate to be her boyfriend.
In any case - as lovely as Feist is - I wish he had sung on Lover's Spit.

damnit. i missed grizzly bear. my date was late.
feist was really great though. her voice sounds even better live.
Posted by Anonymous | June 12, 2007 9:29 AM
They really do love eachother... the way she was tousseling his hair and the way he kissed her forearm after the performance... was too authentic...
Overall the night was REALLY good... highlights were Mushaboom, The Park, The Water, and Let It Die.
Grizzly Bear was ON last night, was my 5th time seeing them, and I agree that it was one of their best performances to date, which leads me to believe they are getting tighter and tighter.
The only gripe I have was the lighting... wtf? Horrible for pics unless you were like 3 feet from the stage.
I recorded Grizzly's set but not Feist since I wanted to enjoy her's as it was my first time. I'm glad I got to enjoy it.
Posted by jason | June 12, 2007 9:29 AM
Yeah people, get there early for grizzly. It's a nice warm up to Feist. My one problem with Feist was her set was about just 15 minutes too long. Otherwise, Perfection. I am in love with her and want to marry her but could only do that in Big Love, Utah land since I'm already married.

Tom, how much for seat for tonight's show???
Posted by Jonathan | June 12, 2007 9:33 AM
Great Feist performance last night, although the pacing was not unlike a BSS show with some long between-song interludes for chatter and tunings. But she continually involved the audience, coaching the crowd to sing choruses, try multi-part harmonizing and engage in bird-whistling. The song choices were interesting (agree with BV that the new material was strongest) as she played a lot of the quieter pieces (which were lovely) and didn't depend on the more rocking songs to propel the evening along. A wonderful entertainer who is only getting better.

It was really good, but I don't agree that her voice is better live.

anyone have the set list from last night?
Posted by Anonymous | June 12, 2007 9:52 AM
i nearly EXPLODED in ecstasy when kevin came out to play. They really do look like they are in love and maybe I'll stop hating Feist so much for stealing my boyfriend? ha.

Where will tix for the McCarren FEIST show be on sale? Have looked at the usual sites and don't see a listing for it yet? Thanks.
Posted by Anonymous Anonymous | June 12, 2007 10:22 AM
tixs go on sale at noon on friday through live nation. think it'll sell out quick? still deciding if i want to see her in a bigger venue. last night's show had such a nice feel to it.
Posted by anonymous | June 12, 2007 10:28 AM
Feist was loveliness personified.
I put up a few vids of hers and a GB one too.
Thanks, BV, for alerting us to that presale months ago. I am so thankful for that front row experience.

Great show - def get there early for Grizzly Bear. first time seeing them live and it was magical. ed droste is a sexy beast. so is BV.

$30 at Irving Plaza box office, don't forget.
McCarren has a capacity of around 5,000. I doubt Feist'll sell out superfast. Both the BTS/CP and SY shows are still available, and they've been on sale for over a month.
Posted by Qbertplaya | June 12, 2007 11:40 AM
I've seen clips of GB but I wasn't blown away. The guitar playing is sorta weak in my opinion, but the flute sounds are pretty cool.
Posted by Anonymous | June 12, 2007 11:43 AM
check yourself before you wreck yourself anon.
dan rocks on the guitar.
you have to see it live, shitty videos dont' do it justice.

did kevin cross-over then, or was he never gay?
Posted by Anonymous | June 12, 2007 7:48 PM
Well, he was married to the woman he was making out with in the Lover's Spit video until last year, so I'm gonna say he was prob never really gay.
Posted by jess | June 12, 2007 8:55 PM
Just back from tonight's performance. Transcendent. If anyone has the set lists for Feist and GB, please post.
Posted by Anonymous | June 12, 2007 11:01 PM
what? jess? kevin? married? before? more info PLEASE!!!!!
Posted by pretty girl | June 12, 2007 11:32 PM
Kevin was married for a number of years, until pretty recently I think, to Jo-Ann Goldsmith, who has played trumpet with Broken at various times and is credited as a member on the self-titled album. She also plays in a very fun Toronto band called The Old Soul.
And yeah, that's them in the Lover's Spit video.

Saw Feist tonight (Tues). It was really good, though I think I over-hyped myself a bit. I was really expecting an incredible show, and instead it was just really good. Actually, the soft songs were unbelievably good. Her voice is amazing, and the songs are amazing. But the rocking songs just never took off. I found it a little frutrating, not that they were bad, because they were good, but I was expecting something more. Songs like "my moon, my man" and "I feel it all" just seemed a tad weak to me.
But the slow songs really were amazing. On those songs the backing band was very minimal and it was perfect, because you mostly just wanted that voice. But otherwise I agree with that VV article that the backing band was lacking.
It occurs to me that maybe I've earned my stripes as a BV commentor... criticizing a perfectly good show!

lee part 2?
Posted by Lee | June 13, 2007 2:49 AM
Grizzly Bear was far better.
Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2007 11:18 AM
Went the 2nd night. Missed most of Grizzly Bear because I spent 10 minutes trying to boot a dude that was in our seats. They sounded real good from the little i heard.
Feist was good but less than what i expected. Way too many slow songs chosen. She had a lot of upbeat songs that she chose to leave out. I was denied "One Evening." I expected it during the encore after she had everyone on their feet during "Sea Lion Woman" but chose "Let it Die" instead leaving everyone standing in silence. She has a great voice but either the vocals were really low during the upbeat songs or she doesnt really put enough energy behind her voice.
I would like to see the set list from the night before just to read what i missed but I cant find it anywhere.
