That sound? That sound you hear? The sound of scalpers flexing their fingers. It's the sound of human misery.

the question is will someone pay more than the $200 that was paid to go to the interpol show this week?
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 11:47 AM
I got a pair and can't quite believe it after so many disappointments in similar situations this year. Am reading and re-reading my confirmation e-mail to make sure this isn't a joke.
If you keep trying you might get lucky.

"who the fuck cares, they will play agian soon"
Yeah, but not at the Bowery Ballroom.
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 11:49 AM
Aaaarg... first missed the Interpol show, now this. At least I got Inteprol tix for Atlantic City as a consolation prize, but still pretty unfortunate.

that guy chris posts like every day for all the shows. he always posts the same number.
he often sells at scalper prices, and will lowball if he's looking to buy. often offers to trade a dvd of the show if he's looking for a tough ticket.
clearly, i spend too much time on craigslist.

just picked up 2 as well at 12:16

I got 2 at high noon - the server was so slow that I thought I'd missed out. This will hopefully make up for missing Interpol.

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 11:58 AM
Rather annoyingly I ended up with one ticket and not a pair - something went wrong around the entering the password point and when I got to the order confirmation form it was too late.
Oh well, I'll be the one at the back staring into my beer between bands.

Oh ya know what i just realized. I have spoken to this Chris cl guy before. I was selling my extra for Chris Cornell at Irving and he contacted me. Apparently the deal is he works for one of the major record companies and has contacts at the others and smaller ones and he gets tickets from them and then resells for profit. He has "in's" at a lot of different places ie sporting events, tv shows like Letterman and SNL. He is actually pretty well connected from what i gathered.

Just flag those Craigslist ads as "prohibited," people. But be sure to do it more than once b/c it takes a handful of flags before a post is removed.
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 1:01 PM
If you click the "prohibited" button when you find tickets on craigslist going for more than 10% over face, they often pull the ad.

Extra tickets? Let me know if you still have them. evanrmaxwell@yahoo.com

The thing I hate the most about big bands playing small venues is the inevitable complaining. It's not ticketweb, it's not some guy trying to get you to pay for his and your ticket -- it's the fact that Bowery holds 550 people!
This thread is exactly why a band like this plays a small venue -- to create demand, buzz -- they want to be NY cool again.
For the love of God, suck it up.
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 1:32 PM
I actually emailed Chris from CL about tickets a while back. I also emailed a Tranny to set up a casual encounter. It turns out that they were both the same people.
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 1:40 PM
This person is right. Scalpers have a hard life and need to be compensated. its not easy being a scalper. you try it. $500 for a pair of tickets isnt worth complaining over. Really.
How about the inevitable sarcasm? do you hate that too?
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 1:43 PM
PS- Scalping is no longer illegal in NY. So all you dickweed hipsters can wear your Tina Faye glasses and whine all you want about not getting tickets...no one gives a shit.
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 1:43 PM
Dickweed? I havent heard that term since the 80s. Ok Vinny, put your hard hat on and go back to the construction site I think you have some more sheetrock to unload.
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 1:47 PM
How about when "scalpers" take losses and sell tickets for 50-90% below cost. Then you people come out of the woodwork to pay in nickels...and you couldn't be happier. No one says a word when that happens. But now you little fags can't get tickets to Franz Ferdinand and you act like it's the end of the world. Go read a book in the park and pretend like it's a cool thing to do.
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 1:47 PM
Anonymous 1:43PM is right. Scalping in NYC isn't even illegal anymore.
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 1:48 PM
the resale of tickets to events in NYS is still limited to face value+20% or $5 (whichever is higher). you're an idiot if you think scalping is legal.
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 1:52 PM
If someone sells their ticket below face value, I don't know if I'd necessary call it "scalping"...nahumsayin?
Posted by Drugs Delaney | June 7, 2007 1:53 PM
When i see actual tickets to the show actually going for 400 or 500 dollars, and not just an asking price, ill be happy to sell mine. Id be crazy not to. I hate scalpers just as much as the next person but when you all start paying my bills then i will take the high road
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 1:56 PM
I'm part Cherokee and scalping has been a tradition in my family for years.

"You are a moron"- a wise man. Not just a regular moron, an uninformed moron. Who doesn't even think twice to read a newspaper, type in google dot come, or ask someone before spouting off misinformation.
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 1:57 PM
the reason companies like StubHub can markup tickets to ungodly prices is that the NYS markup laws do not apply if the sale takes place outside of NYS. So if their offices are in Jersey, it's legal to charge $600 for a $35 ticket. Which is totally fucked and the reason the concert industry is going to fall apart, but is legal nonetheless
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 1:59 PM

i always like to think of scalping (and its subsequent enemies) in the context of Friedrich Nietzsche's "On the Genealogy of Morals" and his concept of the master/slave morality.
The master morality takes what he wants --> he buys the two tickets and sells them.
the slave morality founds its morality on the basis that what the master morality does is evil since it interferes with his own abilities, and he is a victim of the master's deeds --> he did not get tickets, and does not have the money to buy scalped tickets, and thus he regards the scalping as evil.
nietzsche goes on to say that while members of the slave morality may regard the scalping as evil, if they were truly the masters of their own domain, they would simply buy the tickets, scalp them, and show no regard for the members of the slave morality. this is what seperates the masters from the slaves.
so basically, if you didn't get a ticket, and are complaining, then you're just a little loser bitch, and probably would be scalping them as we speak if you could.
the scalper is selling for the exact same reason that the victims are complaining - lack of money. we are all the same. the scalper is the same as the victim, only under different circumstances.
i now end your philosophy lesson for the day.

Spoken like a true gentleman Anonymous, 2:01 PM.
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 2:05 PM
and yes, scalping in NYC is completely legal now ,regardless of price.
so suck a fat dick, Anonymous 1:52pm.

"The current law lets brokers charge up to 45 percent above face value for large events. However, for venues with fewer than 6,000 seats, the cap is 20 percent above face value."
This isn't Radio City Music Hall, so these tickets shouldn't go for more than $36.
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 2:06 PM
Regardless of whether or not scalpers are heartless bastards out to make a quick buck - surely the burden here is with the venues, promoters and ticket agencies - not with the state?
It really isn't that hard to come up with a stricter way of ensuring that tickets are non-transferable and only the original purchaser can use them, it's just the venues are slack about enforcing it giving the scalpers a window.
Look at what's happened with Glastonbury in the UK, following so many years of tickets being bought up by scalpers and then sold on they've gone to the length now of having people's photos on the actual tickets and, hey presto, the scalpers are completely cut out.
Sure, that's a bit extreme, but if the Bowery just got tough on asking for photo ID which matches credit card ID which matches name on tickets it would be much harder for scalpers to offload tickets and therefore make them think twice before buying them in the first place.
Maybe for these high demand events they should insist on you naming the second person? No more of this 'we'll meet outside and you'll walk in with me'?
Posted by Alex | June 7, 2007 2:08 PM
wow, some people are really stupid (Anonymous 2:06PM)
and Anonymous 2:01PM just revolutionized scalping - that was just philosophical. very deep stuff.
good job!
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 2:08 PM
The term "scalping" only has negative connotations. Look at the root origins of that word. You think the early american settlers were happy to get half their head taken off?
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 2:09 PM
HAHA very well put, Anonymous 2:01pm. Kudos to you.
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 2:10 PM
Wow...apparently your reading COMPREHENSION skills were left behind in 5th grade. That refers to the "current" law (current being current as of 5-7 days ago), in which they couldn't go for 20% more. That is no longer CURRENT.
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 2:10 PM
Oops, I stand corrected. Thanks, Anon 2:01.

Please explain to me why the concert industry is going to fall apart because there is so much demand that people are paying $600 for a $35 ticket. Seems like an industry where demand is greater than supply would be a good one to be in.
It is nice rhetoric though.
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 2:12 PM
Anonymous 2:09PM,
The term "scalping" may have negative connotations, alluding to the Native American practice, but then again - doesn't this simply further support Nietzsche's Master/Slave Morality?
You only regard scalping as evil when YOU are the victim. Americans killed countless Native Americans while fulfilling their "manifest destiny" of their respective North American territory, and thus seems much less stigmatized than the seemingly "savage" and "rash" Native American practice of scalping during battles. But then again, both people are spilling blood, both are killing.
The Native American and the American are the same in their savageness. The Red Man equals the White Man.

The concert industry is just in a very sad state these days. It's become nothing more than another venue for greed. The days when live music was for the fans are long gone. Now it's nothing more than a glorified stock market with a good soudtrack. It's a shame. It used to be about the music. Now that's the absolute last thing on anyone's mind.
goodnight old friend.
Posted by FrixFrixFrix | June 7, 2007 2:30 PM
Yeah i enjoyed the whole Nietzsche theories applied to scalping and history. Fortunately for society and the planet, these theories are just that and not reality. It's those pesky honest, good, noble and optimistic people out there who throughout history continually shove a fist into the gloomy mouth of Nietzche's theories. Many people do not scalp their tickets for ridiculous prices because it is just sleazy and many people without those tickets do not like it because it is just sleazy. Luckily I get through life believing that Karma truly exists.
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 2:30 PM
Was this Nietzsche guy a scalper? I think I used to see him outside Yankee Stadium.
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 2:32 PM
i think he was trying to say that it didn't matter if he was a scalper or not, and that everyone is the same.
and i (unlike Anon 2:30pm) happen to agree - the theory gets more interesting if you apply it to other situations in life (like why i resent all of the things that my parents, and thus swear that i won't be that way when i'm a parent, even though i probably will)

Too bad beethoven was dead when Nietzche was born.
This thread has thus far proven that bv commentators can't read, nor do they know basic history.

Anon 3:09. Tix to what? Franz or the Beethoven bathtub show?
Posted by JJ | June 7, 2007 3:13 PM
anon 2:01:
if i remember correctly, he also makes the distinction of good/evil, which is an idea of the slaves, and good/bad, which is something the masters subscribe to. the good/bad distinction is when you do something that is essentially *bad form*. something embarrassing. something you should have known better about.
in that case, if you think of indie rock nerds like all of *us* (meaning everyone who reads this site) as the masters (meaning this is where taste is determined for the use of people who aren't as educated, don't understand, etc) then scalping tickets is not *evil* but *bad*. because it is what a douchebag does who doesn't understand that your little $20 mark up means you're essentially middlebrow if that's what you work hard for. and art is bigger than that.
a stretch, perhaps. i read it like ten years ago, and i was drunk. and listening to the fucking sisters of mercy at full volume. getting a blow job from a scalper.

nor anything resembling a sense of humor. loser
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 3:20 PM
I was at that Beethoven bathtub show...it sucked because the crowd wasn't into it...they just stood there with their arms folded and didn't move...those nazi hipsters think they're so cool...plus people were talking in the parlor...also they had the nerve to charge 40 pfenning...
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 3:23 PM
This conversation is great and all but the big question is....who wants to join the beer staring party?
Posted by MP77 | June 7, 2007 3:37 PM
"The concert industry is just in a very sad state these days. It's become nothing more than another venue for greed. The days when live music was for the fans are long gone. Now it's nothing more than a glorified stock market with a good soudtrack. It's a shame. It used to be about the music. Now that's the absolute last thing on anyone's mind.
goodnight old friend."
More rhetoric. When was the music industry not interested in making money?
Posted by CN | June 7, 2007 3:48 PM
Dude, who quoted all the Nietzche stuff: Get off your ivory tower. And I dont mean the toilet bowl you currently frequent.
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 3:50 PM
Josh 3:13,
Nietzsche's discussion on good/evil is an entirely different concept than his understanding of the terms "good vs. bad." based on his philosophy, good/evil is derived from the slave morality, as they first define what is "evil" as the actions through which the members of the master morality victimize them. the good/bad distinction is derviced from the master morality, in that the actions they do are good - not good in the moral sense, but great, heroic, triumphant, and praiseworthy - and thus they regard all inferior forms as "bad," strictly based on the sense that they do not achieve such levels of grandiosity - they consider themselves the highest echelon of mankind.
the master morality is regarded as the correct morality, since the slave morality is created through resentment of the master morality's actions, and - as Nietzsche so eloquently puts - basing one's moral parameters on another's actions being "evil" is as irrational as a the prey of a "bird of prey" basing its moral concept on the actions of the bird as "evil" since, in fact, the bird's actions are not evil at all, but rather simply of a superior nature to the victim (the bird's prey).
thus, if one were truly acquainted with the metaphysical nature of the universe, one would be forced to accept that the only correct thing to do is abandon one's slave morality and rather strive to achieve the superior, dominant master morality

Dude, you f'ing serious?!? The Beethoven Bathtub show was SICK. Ludwig was totally into it...The 5th Symphony (movement 4) encore was off the charts. I'm so tired of hearing these loser hipsters talk about people not "dancing enough" at these shows. He's a pianist for God's sake...just cause I'm not moving around doesn't mean I'm not enjoying it.
Anyone see Joseph Hayden in the crowd? Heard he was there.
(This work day can not end soon enough)
Posted by Drugs Delaney | June 7, 2007 3:52 PM
Yeah, I saw Hayden in the crowd. He was wearing a dress and getting serviced by Bach. Mozart was sitting in the balcony so we all started chanting "Wolfgang" "Wolfgang". I was kind of disappointed Ludwig didn't play any new stuff.
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 4:00 PM
What time did Beethoven go on? How was the sound in Nietzche's bathtub? Anyone have the set list?
Posted by FranzLiszt | June 7, 2007 4:12 PM
The sound in Nietzche's bathtub was tight! Much better than that new East Village bathtub.
They just don't make 'em the way they used to.
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 4:15 PM
hrmph, yeah ok. point taken then if that's what yer saying. lesson is: quit complaining, which i can get behind in most situations, i admit. but then we gotta make the distinction that scalpers are not doing anything heroic, and so while we shouldn't label their behavior as "evil," that does not make them good either, and as they are certainly not supermen performing heroic deeds they fail on that count, too.
it would be slave behavior, middle class, what have you, to say something like "scalpers should get real jobs if they are capable of it," so we shouldn't say it. rather, we should float above all of it, eyes on our heroic deeds. not that we won't step on a few fingers, cause a few deaths, etc. because we are above caring about that.
Posted by josh | June 7, 2007 4:16 PM
i wish i could be in the other conversation about beethoven. that one's better, dude. we should have gone that direction with it.
Posted by josh | June 7, 2007 4:19 PM
F-ck Live Nation for making us go all the way to Nietzche's to see Beethoven. I had to switch horse carraiges 3 f-cking times! There was no place to get a lager after the show either.
And I can't believe they're going to rename the place Fillmore at Nietzche's Bathtub.
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 4:20 PM
That Oompah Band they had opening really sucked. It took them forever to set up.
Also, too many frat boys in leiderhosen there. I can't believe everyone knows about Beethoven now, it's freaking impossible to get tickets.

Mozart stole my basketball.

Posted by Drugs Delaney | June 7, 2007 4:40 PM
I didn't like security - one guy kept poking me with his sword to get me to sit down. Also, I couldn't find my seat because there weren't enough candles.
Was it just me, or did Ludwig seem like he wasn't really into it last night? I think he may have done too much lead before the show.
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 4:49 PM
Yeah security was too tight, you know all those guards listen to Rachmaninov before the show!
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 4:53 PM
The website says the Beethoven show is sold out, but I understand there may be tickets at the door. Do I go to the box office in Salieri's drawing room, or straight to the Fillmore at Nietzche's Bathtub? I am so psyched for this. I saw him play the 11 o'clock Mass five years ago before the 8.9 on pitchfork.
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 4:55 PM
Now this is an incredible message board. My job is done.
Posted by the Nietzsche Post Guy | June 7, 2007 5:03 PM
To anon@4:29pm...NO WAY, The Oompah band rocked! I only went to see them, left right after they finished...Beethoven sucks, don't you hipsters have any taste? It's like Beethoven can't even hear himself play...
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 5:07 PM
Beethoven was good when he was indie but he's sold out now. He's a douchebag for playing the large concerts halls, he should come back to Bonn and do a free show for us.

what is my thing?
take a guess...one lucky winner will get half of a ticket...ok, maybe whole one.
Posted by FatBoyJim | June 7, 2007 5:41 PM
Is Beethoven playing in a bubble?
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 5:55 PM
the show at nietsche's sucked. everyone in the first two rows had their quill and papyrus and was too busy writing to enjoy the show.
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 7:15 PM
Did you all see that babe in the 3rd row who lifted her skirt above her ankle when she sat?
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 7:29 PM
That a-hole painting a portrait in the front row blocked my view, what a dick. Didn't the tickets say no painting allowed?
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 7:32 PM
I'm suprised no one here taked about the merch! I snagged myself a Beethoven seat cover for my horse carriage and awesome Beethoven quill and matching ink pot. They look awesome on my mantle.

Posted by bumpershine | June 7, 2007 8:35 PM
Hey, morons, Beethoven doesn't play an instrument or conduct the orchestra, so his presence at a performance of his work is superfluous. He's just there for the scene.
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 8:46 PM
yeah, i saw beethoven and george clinton play a cholera festival together and they both just stood there with wild hair while the band played.
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 9:01 PM
What was with that wig he was wearing last night, it was so '30's (1830's)...
Also, what's with the ego trip?... he was acting like he's Mozart playing a small venue.
Overall, I have to say I liked the first of the Bathtub Sessions, I'm hoping to get a single off one those slimy Bavarian scalpers tonight.
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 9:01 PM
I hate having any contact with those Beethoven scalpers, I swear they all have the plague.
Also, the guy behind me was coughing like he had TB.
On top of that, the outhouse line was mighty long.
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 9:08 PM
BV, can you change the name of this thread to "Beethoven played the Fillmore at Nietzsche's last night"?
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 9:12 PM
Correction. The venue's full name is:
"The Fillmore at Nietzsche's Bathtub"
and there were too many damn hipsters there last night yapping on their cellphones right in the middele of Movement 2: Andante con moto of his Symphony No. 5
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 9:54 PM
i went to the beethoven show just to check out the scene and see what all the other concert goers were wearing. i was totally embarrassed when 2 girls standing near me were wearing the same corset and skirt that i was wearing which i bought from country outfitters. like omg.
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 11:13 PM
i was so embarrassed when people clapped and it was only the end of the andante con moto. i mean, have they never heard it before? i bet most people there didn't even own the score.
Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 11:23 PM
For me, the funniest part was this hipster doofus next to me named Thomas trying to "record" the show. I laughed so hard, can you imagine someone actually thinking he could hear the music again long after Ludwig played it?...i think he said his last name was Edison...

Posted by Anonymous | June 8, 2007 1:34 PM
I remember when I saw Beethoven at Brownie's during a CMJ show. It was some time in the mid-90s, and before he was well known he used to just run his harpsichord through a loop pedal since he didn't have a backing band. I barely got in, as the badge line to see Luchesi who was playing afterward at 11:00 was really long. Anyway, it was an incredible performance. I remember everyone in the crowd taking off their wigs at the end of the encore (he came back out for an Encore of Sonata number 30 despite the severe CMJ time restrictions--and made an impromptu change of key to B-blat) and setting them on fire.

Look philosophical dudes, you could say the B-man's career is in the toilet, instead of the bathtube, but I'm not so sure.
Check this out: He doesn't do anything for a really, really long time, right? After Nietzsche's bathtube, home boy pretty much just falls off the face of the earth, outa sight, outa mind, might as well be dead. And then, from outa nowhere, the nowhere from nowhere even, he decides to hit the comeback trail. And most hipsters are neither suprised nor interested, I mean, they can barely remember him. Beethoven? Who the hell is that? He might as well just give up, he might as well just throw up his hands and go sing in a casino lounge. But he decides against all that and he goes for it.
So how does he kick it off?
He says wtf and appears in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. You know what I'm talkin' about -think back.
Philosophical dudes, I ask you: is this good or bad, good or evil?
On the one hand, you could say, "A Bill and Ted movie? Really?! That's ridiculous. B-man, I love ya but, dude, just pack it up and get back in the grave. You're wastin' your time. Very, very bad form."
But, then again, on the other hand, you could say, "Beethoven did a good move. Hipsters love the 80's, and all its 80's chic-dom. So, by extension, they would love his appearance in this movie, even before they knew they would love the 80's, even before they were possibly born. I mean, they don't call him a genius for nothin', right?" And, then, if you really wanted to get deep about it, you could say, "As Bill and Teazy went back in time, calling on our B-man for their own crappy high school report (which actually turned out to be pretty rad), the B-man, in turn, saw his own opportunity to go forward in time and put his name back where it belongs, back into the BV-news. Plus his performance on those casios in the mall scene was just fuckin' vicious."
If you were to consider it...
God, I can't wait to imbibe after work...

Why is that a rationalization for scalping?
Indians have been taking money through gambling joints for years. And it's only because people/gov't feel badly for previous generations that they allow it happen. It's a business now. With savy non-Indian business people in mix, my coworker is was deemed Indian through a cememory, does that mean he has to say he isn't Jewish anymore? I think not.

i got two on the original date, and now i have two in my shopping cart.
i will, however, never buy those two tickets in my shopping cart (since I can't buy two more from the same credit card anyway) - i'm just holding them ransom (in my shopping cart) until my tickets on craigslist are sold.
hahahahahahahahaha, suck a dick you whiney farts.

Hey ANON 2:44pm
please do that you stupid asshole. Then you wont get in at all and neither will the people you sell the tickets to and they will kick your ass hopefully. Schmuck its not the same credit card you cant use. It is the same name you dummy. There is a 2 ticket limit PER PERSON. That means name. When you go to the show you have to present id and card and if they see your name with more than 2 tickets they cancel all. Actually i think if it shows up on ticketweb with the same name for more than 2 tickets they cancel all of them
So go ahead dummy
Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2007 2:51 PM
Oh and there is a time limit on the cart. I think its like 5 mins. You cant hold anything "ransom" for more than that.

Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2007 3:14 PM
i remove the tickets every 4 minutes and put them back in - i never plan on buying the tickets, so they can't ban my name from the concert.
and you, and everyone else, will never kick my ass, because this is the internet, and you have no idea who i am. so how about you give me your personal details, and then - if i come to accept the ass-kicking that you promised - we can see if you can actually pull it off.
suck a dick you whiney complaining fart. get a job that pays more than $20/hr and maybe you can afford to not complain/buy scalped tickets.
Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2007 3:19 PM
Erm could I be the only one to think that Anon 3.19pm may not be entirely telling the truth? That for the last 2 hours they've been sitting there adding and removing a pair of tickets from their basket every 4 mins for some bizarre reason that it may make it more likely their tickets on Craigslist sell. Maybe not.
There are easy ways to make it harder for people to sell on their tickets anyway, as I wrote somewhere earlier on this board before it all went down a rather odd classical / philosophy route. It just needs Bowery Presents to actually care about enforcing their own rules.
Glad everyone who got them got them, I shall no longer be staring at my beer at the back between bands.
Posted by Alex | June 11, 2007 3:27 PM
between bands? who's opening?
Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2007 4:02 PM
Agreed, Alex. At least, I HOPE Anon 3:19 is being dishonest. Even a $500 profit isn't worth the monotony of doing that. All the money in the world won't buy him/her a life.
Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2007 4:23 PM
No idea about the afterparties, but if the Franz afterparty follows the gig immediately, then you'd be missing the Pigeon Detectives and the Rakes at the KF at 11.
Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2007 4:28 PM
Of course that mongoloid is lying. You cant even do that-remove them and then put them back in. Once you remove them they go back into the pool. Yeah and when there were only a few tickets put on sale today this guy managed to corner the whole system and keep getting the few tickets
He is just a little internet geek loser with no life trying to rile up you people. This is what one does when they have been living in mommy and daddys basement their whole life
As for Bowery presents not enforcing their rules. HUH? At interpol they were very strict. You when downstairs, had to show y oru card and id,and had to go immediately inside. If u had a 2nd ticket the guest had to walk in with you. It is going to be the same at this show. I am not sure how they are not enforcing their rules???
Finally.."but if the Franz afterparty follows the gig immediately, then you'd be missing the Pigeon Detectives and the Rakes at the KF at 11."
---that is a show i can def miss
Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2007 4:41 PM
On the not enforcing rules point, I agree with you but I think the problem is the inconsitency. For Arcade Fire @ United Palace they were really strict, insisting that if the billing address didn't match the address on your ID then you needed to be able to recite it before they let you in, but for Bright Eyes @ the Bowery you could be walking in with anyone's credit card details (as they only checked ID upstairs and creidt card downstairs, not both together) making it much easier to scalp the tickets.
If they were consistent and you definitely didn't get in if you weren't the guy named on the ID which matched the ticket order then people wouldn't buy scalped tickets on Craigslist because they'd know they'd be worthless - one experience of spending $200 and then getting turned away would at least make you think twice. As demand dries up scalpers stop buying them in the first place as they don't want to get dumped with tickets they can't move. See my earlier post about how this problem has been virtually eradicated for Glastonbury in the UK.
Also from my earlier post, insisting that you name who the second person is when you book for high profile events and that they also bring ID would again make it much harder to scalp the tickets.
My basic point is that if the promoters wanted to get tough on the scalpers it's honestly not that hard.
Posted by Alex | June 11, 2007 5:04 PM
"insisting that you name who the second person is when you book for high profile events and that they also bring ID would again make it much harder to scalp the tickets."
It would, but that would suck. I got a pair of tickets for the Franz show on Wednesday, forgetting the person I had in mind for the second had a prior engagement. So I found a buyer for face and we'll be meeting day of. Getting stuck with that ticket when so many people are going nuts to get in wouldn't be cool at all.

"Getting stuck with that ticket when so many people are going nuts to get in wouldn't be cool at all." - agreed, but it wouldn't be that hard to have a means by which you can get one ticket refunded for a sold out event and they release it back into the pool where it can be fairly bought by whoever is lucky enough to be on their site that day - kind of like the extra released tickets I got lucky with today. It's obviously not something you'd want to do for all gigs, as I often buy two tickets in the offchance of persuading an unidentified friend to come along, but for these kind of 'bound to sell out in 5 mins' gigs it could be worth it to give more people a chance of getting in without having to pay through the nose to someone who's just trying to make a quick buck.
Just an idea.

Or, and just thought of this, have a returns line, so if you do end up with a spare ticket with your friend's name on it you can return it at the box office and it can be sold onto whoever has got the energy to spend all day queuing. Would definitely make sure the ticket goes to someone who really wants to see the show and you get your money back. And no room for scalpers.
Seriously, if the promoters and ticket agencies just got creative, I'm sure they could start to solve this problem. I'm just not convinced they're interested. After all, it only really happened with Glastonbury because the police got involved and they were threatened with losing their license.

Wait i still dont agree, even if downstairs they are just checking the credit card and not id, what scalper is going to give you his credit card to go into the show with..You cant show a copy on a piece of paper. It has to be the actual card. And you cant show the card and then go back out and get people in or give them tickets. You had and have to show them the card and then and if you have a guest go right in and with a 2 ticket limit per person(name on card) a scalper can only do 1 ticket. As well the card holder cant come downstairs with 2 people, show the card and say oh they are the ones going in. For any real scalper that kind of hassle is just not worth it

Being back all the Beethoven talk. It was getting tiresome, but better than reading comments from ticketless hipsters that got shut out.
Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2007 6:22 PM
If you peruse this site and you're posting, you are a hipster too. sorry to break it to you pal.
Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2007 7:02 PM
NOT...i persue this site often and am definitely NOT a hipster.
Posted by Anonymous | June 11, 2007 7:21 PM
You actually can show a copy of the credit card at most Bowery shows. But never mind, if you're right then not a single one of the people buying tickets on Craigslist will get in which has to be a good thing.
And to the 'ticketless hipster' guy - noone's forcing you to read the site. I was trying to help out in posting when I found out tickets were on sale which some people seemed to appreciate, that's all. If you had actually read the post you'd also have seen that we actually have tickets, it was just instead of the constant moaning about all the scalpers every time a gig sells out I was suggesting some ways I thought it could be better. But sorry for wasting your time.

A limit of two tickets per NAME? What if you have a very common name?
Posted by Michael Johnson | June 11, 2007 7:31 PM
The scalper could buy the tickets using a Visa gift card s/he'd give the buyer. Or use a regular card, cancel it and give the buyer the canceled card.
And I agree with Alex's ideas, but they'd require more manpower to do that, which means more salaries, which means higher ticket prices. Though I'd rather give the extra money to someone with a legitimate job than a scalper.

Well I waited and had my Dad wait at home all Wednesday and then spend most of my night online waiting, which should have been spent studying for finals. And then on my birthday I find out that I can't even by tickets because I'm under 18. Which sucks even more than not getting tickets!
But I did kind of write the band an angry myspace message about it and got kind of a sweet but contrite reply from Alex. I almost peed my pants...

Hey, anyone got the pre-sale password to the beer-staring party? Don't even tell me it's LOSER--I'd guess WINNER, because at least we all have tickets.

Maybe in Indiana a venue will have a 'returns' line (which is the only place I ever saw a venue allow someone (who had just upgraded at the box office to a better seat) return their ticket or trade it in. there are economics that prohibit it as well - you've sold out the venue, you're not going to change that state for any reason.
more likely, TM hasn't found a way to make that part of the exercise profitable for them just yet.
Posted by old fart | June 12, 2007 1:37 PM
I know that returns lines aren't common for gigs but they are very common at other arts venues (theatre, classical etc). And there's no economic implication, you only get your money back if it's sold onto someone waiting in line - if there is no line you're stuck with your ticket, the venue stays sold out whatever. It's basically a more legitimate way than standing around outside trying to sell it and gives those locked out an alternative to going to the scalpers.
So my basic suggestion is, for high demand shows, insist that every ticket has a name on it and provide a legitimate way of selling on tickets you can no longer use - and there are many ways TM or any promoter can make money out of that (think of the booking fees...).
For an alternative and innovative solution to the scalping problem check out www.scarletmist.com.
And that's the last I have to say on the topic because I doubt it will ever really change and we'll be stuck with trawling Craigslist for tickets and mad scrambles on Ticketweb for quite some time. Back to the 'Who's bigger? Franz Ferdinand or The Beatles?' thread.

Ticketmaster does have Ticketexchange, but that only works online and doesn't help at the venue...and Bowery Presents doesn't work with them anyway (thought Ticketmaster redirects to Ticketweb now anyway and the fees are the same, so there's really no difference).

Does anyone know if there are other bands on the bill tonight? It seems crazy that there would be no openers. Just trying to do some time management.
