these photos are gay too
what's up bv?

Posted by Patrick Donahue | June 6, 2007 4:59 AM

Carlos D, go f*cking smoke at your house.

Posted by Eduardo | June 6, 2007 6:47 AM

never liked the band - joy division RIPPED OFF!!!
and WE all know it......

Posted by mj | June 6, 2007 7:45 AM

Wow! So many people apparently are so self conscious they feel the need to diss any and every band that has some popularity. While I know that not everyone would or should like this band, they were awesome live last night (aside from some possible technical issues) and I would go back to see them again and again. And for all of you dreamers who think everyone is a rip off of some other band and should not exist or whatever you thinking, answer me this. How are you going to go about seeing bands the influential bands such as Joy Division? Didn't think so. There are only so many sounds out there so of course bands are going to sound alike. Now just go cry in your Cheerios and lets bring down the level of whining.

Posted by Erik | June 6, 2007 8:21 AM

Hey Stop Letting out my secret!!!

I would've gotten away with ripping off Joy Division if it wuddant for you meddling kidsters.

Posted by Interpol Lead Singer | June 6, 2007 8:23 AM

Everyone rips off everyone. Anyone have anything new to say?

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2007 8:49 AM

You guys are so lame, first of all just because interpol has gained a little popularity it doesn't mean that they are not a great band and last night was the living proof. I know that it hurts when something like this happens but hey it's the new world and it is hard to keep things secret so shut up, and enjoy life without the lame whining... if you don't really like interpol why bother posting ridiculous comments? either you have nothing else to do in your bitter life or you just want to pretend being hipsters..... but hey who cares about you anyways?

Posted by DV | June 6, 2007 8:56 AM

carlos d tries so fucking hard...

i liked the first album lots...definitely captured nyc at the time but that second album blew.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2007 8:58 AM

why are you people hating on this band? i guess the arcade fire and sufjan stevens were busy this morning...(BACKLASH/WHIPLASH)

Posted by cranky | June 6, 2007 9:02 AM

i had seven faces/never knew which one to wear.

and no, carlos d. does not have herpes.

Posted by just to read my diary | June 6, 2007 9:08 AM

Excellent show last night, from start to finish. I saw them at coachella last month and they put on an equally good show then. It was so nice to see them at Bowery, even though the place was filled with industry types who weren't so into physically enjoying the show.

Posted by Carl | June 6, 2007 9:12 AM

I was the least cool person (biggest dork) at the Interpol show last night. I knew the words to every song, really got into the music and even danced a bit. As far as being a disaffected hipster is concerned, I failed miserably.

As always, Interpol sounded great but had no stage presence or audience interaction. Still, I was really psyched to see them in New York's best venue.

Thanks for the tip on tickets, BV. Now when do those Franz Ferdinand tickets go on sale? I can't wait to read everyone's posts about how much of a "sell-out" they are.

Posted by Dan | June 6, 2007 9:24 AM

no, they were just never good

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2007 9:35 AM

were there tickets at the door? anyone get them?

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2007 9:44 AM

In case anyone who actually likes Interpol clicked on this post, they played:

Pioneer To The Falls
Obstacle 1
Narc
Say Hello To The Angels
Take You On A Cruise
Mammoth
Slow Hands
Leif Erikson
Heinrich Maneuver
Evil
Not Even Jail

Length Of Love
Stella Was A Diver And She Was Always Down
PDA

And were very good.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2007 9:47 AM

Awesome? Excellent from start to finish? Very good? HAS THE BAR REALLY BEEN LOWERED THAT MUCH?? They were, in a word, boring.

Posted by javier buchananeversonia | June 6, 2007 9:55 AM

yo, im not even a huge fan of interpol, but I thought they killed it last night. They had great stage presence and sound. It is clear they have the skills to play larger venues, and as such it was cool to see them in such a small one. Not sure why everyone is so mad today.

Posted by dre | June 6, 2007 9:59 AM

boring? are you kidding? they may not completely rock out and destroy the stage but their stage presence was more than adequate.

they were fantastic - it was the same set that they'd been playing - so it was a bit short (and they really should be playing a few more new songs) - but i've never heard the bowery ballroom sound better - it was probably the best sound/mix i've ever heard from a band - so that was something extra special. The crowd was terribly still - but it was quite the gripping show. The new album is going to blow people away.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2007 9:59 AM

thanks for the set list 9:47... to the above posters, please try to keep your comments relevant.

Posted by byntbynt | June 6, 2007 10:01 AM

Thanks for the setlist. Would have loved to have been there.

Posted by A*ROC | June 6, 2007 10:02 AM

Thanx for posting the setlist. And nice pics BV.

"the place was filled with industry types who weren't so into physically enjoying the show."

Definitely. It seemed like a lot of people were there last night out of obligation, not interest.

Posted by Chris | June 6, 2007 10:02 AM

"Awesome? Excellent from start to finish? Very good? HAS THE BAR REALLY BEEN LOWERED THAT MUCH?? They were, in a word, boring."

They weren't boring if you actually like the band in the first place. Anyone that went to this show thinking they were going to see some mind blowing stage presence are not fans of this band. Do you people go to these shows just so you can whine about it the next day?

Music fans suck these days.

Posted by CN | June 6, 2007 10:02 AM

Gotta love the bitterness from the negative creeps in this thread (people who missed out on tickets). As someone who liked the first album and thought the second could have been shrunk down to a two or three song single, I really enjoyed the show. Sure the band has a limited range, but they're good at what they do.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2007 10:04 AM

Dre: i think you're right on. They were really fucking impressive last night start to finish. But I never realized just how much the synth/keys carry the band live. That's not a knock, just an observation. I think if you took a few songs off each of their records they would have one really good record. Last night did kind of drive home for me that musically there isn't any progression over the last three albums. As good as they were, I did find myself thinking that every song kinda sounded the same. But, they sounded great so it was OK. And I thought they showed great stage presence--they're def. ready to be a major label arena band, for better or (probably) for worse. I wish them luck. Oh, yeah, and I had a great time last night, which is really the point, right?

Posted by Hit Me | June 6, 2007 10:13 AM

Thanks for keeping it real bloggers!!
i couldn't get tickets to last nights show. so what, there will be other "must see" shows that i will get tickets to. (of course i didn't refresh brooklyn vegan for the 2 hours that interpol was announced, went on "pre-sale" and sold out)
I was really looking forward to getting into work today to read all the reviews about how much last night sucked. I really wish i was there, so that this morning i could say that i wished i wasn't there. Does it ever live up to the hype?

Posted by joe | June 6, 2007 10:16 AM

It's so cliché and expected to diss bands when they gain popularity. Elitist dorks.

However, I will say this; this fucking "ironic" moustache craze has got to stop. Carlos and Williamsburg, I'm looking at you. It had its "funny in an ironic sorta way" 3 years ago. People are indeed giggling at you, but not in the way you think. Now, you all just look like douchebags...yeah, you know, like when you call people with popped collars douchebags. You're just like them. You're trying way too hard. Douchebags. I have a razor if you wanna borrow it. Fucking follow the leader drones.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2007 10:18 AM

Word was going around the show that they'll be playing MSG on Friday, September 14. However, there seems to be some confusion about whether it's actual MSG or the Theatre. I'm 99% sure it's the Theatre.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2007 10:22 AM

it was good.

the dude who was playing records before the show picked some really good stuff. i'd like his setlist, too, to be honest.

Posted by josh | June 6, 2007 10:23 AM

I'm so much better at hating on this band than the rest of you are

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2007 10:25 AM

Send Carlos D back to Sam's Town! Seriously, the dirt stash needs to go.

The show was decent, definitely not mind blowing, but seeing Interpol live just made me realize that their songs all sound the same.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2007 10:25 AM

band looked great. band sounded great. room felt warm. it was a great tuesday night party.

Posted by robinson cano | June 6, 2007 10:36 AM

dude, the guitar player had a cable wrangler! Nuff said.

Posted by mrstery | June 6, 2007 10:38 AM

wait til the new cd - it's definitely not "the same" interpol

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2007 10:41 AM

I had a great time at the show last night, I was moving elbow to elbow with Zinner stage left, and I think I saw Aziz with a plaid shirt and he shaved his beard and looked much younger. Wait is this the right blog? Anyway, I thank the fan who gave me the +1 ticket at face after waiting three hours before, and the lady who gave me her setlist, and the roadie for the drumstick. I think this is the only time I will catch them this album tour. They played my favorite cuts at the best venue in new york. I can't foresee any larger venue will give justice to this gig. BV stay cool sorry I made a dick of myself saying hello.

I've seen this post over and over, from the National to Interpol, and others I've chosen to forget. Can we just have one or two names of bands that you like? thanks.

Posted by Pete, and RePete | June 6, 2007 11:19 AM

the crowd could've been more into it--webster hall show, anyone? now that was a crowd of real fans. other than that, it was an excellent show. so glad i got to see this one since i won't be here for the fall tour.

and you're welcome for the setlist, jp. i took the more battered once since it was the one i actually fought for, haha.

Posted by p | June 6, 2007 11:34 AM

Honestly, when you say they rip off Joy Division, it proves that you know nothing about music and don't actually hear sounds.

Obstacle 2 has some similarities and Paul sort-of sings like Ian. Point? None of their music resembles Joy Division.

I hate all of you. Honestly. Everyone who buys into this culture, all of you self-assured art-fag elitists. You're all useless and will die as unimportant as you are now.

Posted by Chris | June 6, 2007 11:59 AM

farmer dave is now in this band as touring keys. he needs to get beachwood or anr back together the world needs one of those.

michael franti & spearhead
tom waits
pearl jam
U2
tom mcrae
arcade fire

They Sucked so much that the show sold out.

And what's up with "this band is gay", WTF!?
Welcome to the fifth grade?
Get a clue haters

The Joy Division comparisons don't hold water.
These guys are obviously way more into DinDisc than Factory Records.

I'm Feeling Carlos' Anchorman stylings.
I knew shaving of my porno moustache last night was a mistake.
hopefully she will grow back one day.

Hey "p" you rule! gracias para todo, este setlist con las palabras de interpol es un regalo que es mas de papel. My email is johnpaulg @ gmail.com I have a couple of pics, do you?

Posted by Jp | June 6, 2007 12:48 PM

heard the crowd was fratty and the music droney and boring. pass!

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2007 12:50 PM

the show was pretty good in my opinion. they played 'hands away' twice in soundcheck but couldn't get it right so didn't for the set, bummer.

i had no idea the kind of tools who go to these shows. i was shocked.

anyways, nice name-dropping comment up there. the show was a fucking industry showcase - there were more band members and famous types about than one could shake a stick at. that waify dude from ratatat and his fugly gf smeared their b.o. on me, fer one. and p.s. nick z. walked in during encore, but srsly just look up the back stairs at any given night at the bowery, homeboy practically lives there.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2007 1:12 PM

"the show was pretty good in my opinion. they played 'hands away' twice in soundcheck but couldn't get it right so didn't for the set, bummer... homeboy practically lives there."

pioneer, leif, jail, I like,

hands away, cruise, heinreich, not so much

The tool(s) comment is so right on. I laughed so loud in my cubicle. I was reminded of the dude with the mane, the large sunglasses the ten speed bike, and the sourpuss face.

Posted by Jp | June 6, 2007 1:37 PM

I liked the moves on the lil' guy (Dan?). Looked like he was waltzing with his guitar.

But why does he only sing a little back-up on two songs from the first album? Two albums later and no more vox parts for him? Curious.

Carlos D. looks like Kevin Klein in "Silverado."

I thought it was a great show. I'm not a super-fan, I like them just fine, and they sounded great. They delivered.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2007 1:41 PM

So, did any BV readers perform a sex act in order to get a ticket to this show?

Posted by perv | June 6, 2007 1:43 PM

Interpol play like girls.

Posted by Homo | June 6, 2007 1:46 PM

i think they were once a cool band, but it seems popularity has taken the depth out of them and passion out of their music -- seems ego now comes #1

Posted by Trish | June 6, 2007 2:43 PM

Was anyone on this message board actually at the show? My mind was blown last night and I wasn't even a huge Interpol fan before this show. There was absolutely no lack of passion. Amazing performance. No doubt about it.

Posted by Jables | June 6, 2007 2:51 PM

That show was so great and fun. It was amazing seeing them at such a small venue again... and I am pretty sure that I've never seen Carlos look so happy before in my life.

Paul sounded fantastic. The time off has done wonders to his voice.

Posted by sarah | June 6, 2007 3:25 PM

Agreed, agreed.

Tight as hell as ever, and they looked happy to be home. So they don't do banter -- it's not needed. You came to be entertained by dumb jokes? Go elsewhere or stay home and watch "Human Giant." (Also, call me crazy, but a bunch of those new songs just aren't going to be doable live. I think the three or four they're currently playing is possibly the most we're gonna see.)

I'm sure I'll get put through the wringer for this, but Interpol is the closest thing we have to high art in the 'popular' indie scene.

Also, whoever wanted the dj's setlist -- sorry, they didn't write one down. But I can tell you they played a new Celebration track, some Yoko Ono, Nilsson's "Jump Into The Fire", and Barr. I'm kind of hazy on the rest... it was a fun set, though.

Also, for the crowd being fratty? Hello, 75% of the crowd was Capitol Music Group staffers.

anyone know who the photographer walking around the floor and asking audience members for their photo was for? i forgot to ask. he had a pretty big camera...

he was with prefixmag.com

"anyone know who the photographer walking around the floor and asking audience members for their photo was for? i forgot to ask. he had a pretty big camera..."

You mean the tall bald douchebag that talked the whole show? Don't know him.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2007 4:21 PM

I waited in line for 5 hours last night...after waiting three years to see them. I thought we had a chance of getting in, but we didn't...so we stood outside and listened. it was exhilarating to hear them for the first time...then we got in at the encore and saw Stella and PDA...one of the coolest moments ever. They are who they are, and they BLEW ME AWAY. I cant wait for their July shows.

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2007 4:24 PM

did anyone else think that carlos d at times looked like an snl-era steve martin playing the part of a hipster band bassist?

Posted by Anonymous | June 6, 2007 4:50 PM

Great band, awful lyrics.

Posted by lover | June 6, 2007 5:18 PM

Posted by Anonymous | June 7, 2007 1:56 AM

Having seen the Interpol "secret show" at the Bowery a few years ago, before the Antics tour, Tuesday night's show wasn't as energetic - but solid nonetheless. The first song, off of their new lp, was really good.

Surrounded by a group of fat, sweatty, Greg Brady hairdo dudes, that were more into seeing how many drinks they could load into themselves than the music, I still managed to have a good time.

Posted by dudleydawson | June 7, 2007 1:34 PM

all the negative comments on here regarding the crowd are so funny. all my friends were talking about how the audience was actually good for once. lots of energy and a lack of drunk-for-the-first time nyu kids. i will agree though that i heard some sounds coming from that ballroom that would sound more at home during a frat kegger than any show you might see there.

for the other negative commenters, i'm sure you all are pretty cool people (ha) but seriously how do you find time to trash bands that you don't like and shows you didn't go to.

all i can think of reading these comments are a) you obviously don't get it, and b) you are turning into the equivalent (or maybe are) one of those lame kids that's cries about people not dancing enough at shows.

Posted by aj | June 7, 2007 2:32 PM

Interpol is amazing. If you think every song is the same, you have not really listened to their music. The genre' may be the same, but not the tunes. And, as far as copying other groups....just because one group has a sound that is similar does not mean they are not talented and have their own sound as well or make their own mark. You need some music appreciation. They are playing in Albany Monday night and I can't wait to see them.
