last night - THE VEILS @ Mercury Lounge & CALIFONE @ Gramercy Theatre - pics
What did you do last night? First I went to the early Veils show at Mercury Lounge.
The Veils w/ top hat @ Mercury Lounge, NYC - June 7, 2007

The Veils have great songs (even if one sounds exactly like a U2 song - even more so than that Polyphonic Spree song sounds like Blondie), and they were a lot of fun live, though at times I wished the band members could play better - especially during this one slower jazzy song that I like a lot on the album (the one he wrote in his mom's laundry) - it kind of fell apart.
Finn Andrews is an excellent frontman though. I was happy to see him wearing his hat - it may be permanently attached to his head - nobody knows for sure. Overall good stuff, and I'm still enjoying the new album. The cover of Bruce Springsteen's "State Trooper" was nice too. Music Snobbery has the whole setlist.
The Veils have Billy Corgan-like taste in bassists @ Mercury Lounge

Then I ran to Gramercy Theater to see Calexico, I mean Califone (I always do that). The contrast was amazing - I was looking forward to both shows, and they were both great, but in different ways. Califone have that talent I was wishing for at the Veils. In fact Califone don't just have one ridiculously awesome drummer - they have two, and a whole band full of extremely talented musicians that put me in a trance - there were seats, and I was seated. Really, really nice....
Califone @ Gramercy Theater, NYC - June 7, 2007

Tony was there. Really, really awkward....

But more on that tomorrow (or feel free to leave the story in the comments).

Hey BV...looks like you were at the exact same spot I was for those pics. You had my wondering where you were standing, and then realized that I was there for the late show!
Totally agree with your write up about The Veils. They're a bit rough around the edges with their live show, compared to their almost pristine album. They do make up for by playing quite loud and with a lot of energy at least though...

"The Veils have Billy Corgan-like taste in bassists"
This is what straight indie boys do instead of catcalling women on the street. Way more subtle, sure, but somehow just as gross.

state trooper is a johnny cash song that bruce springsteen covered on nebraska. i like the bruce version better, but... facts is facts.

Johnny Cash, well known for singing about the New Jersey Turnpike.

I don't think BV was objectifying the bassist...just making a dumb statement...
...because The Pumpkins were and are the only band that has an (attractive) female bassist, right?
Female bassists have become the norm...I don't know why this non captionworthy item is worth BV's mention.

I am a bassist, but I am not female and I am not attractive.
I went to see the Bush Tetras at Cake Shop. Despite their long existence, it was my first time seeing them. Great show, they make it look so easy, from the pumping basslines to the crazed out guitars.

Cash definately didnt right that song - he wrote a lot of songs about running from cops but not that one:

I love when bald, bearded men wear Youth-large tees.

State Trooper is a Springsteen song. Cash covers it.

and now i write:
i was thinking of highway patrolman (not state trooper). but even that is a springsteen song covered by johnny cash. good god damn was i off...
facts is fact, and i've got none of them.

--uhhhhh (shaking head) amazingly a 3rd grader knows about Johnny Cash
Anon 10:23am-"facts is fact, and i've got none of them"

Jeez, life must suck at the tail end of the pussy-chain. Such bitterness. tsk tsk tsk.

It aint hate or bitterness if it is true

The Billy Corgan reference does sound dumb now that I'm half-awake and reading it. I really just failed at attempting to cross-reference all the conversation lately surrounding the new Smashing Pumpkins lineup. Like the Veils, the new Smashing Pumpkins lineup includes a striking looking female on bass. It's true that female bass players are very common, but I guess I just wanted to tie in current events. (see last two or three Smashing Pumpkins posts/comments). Sorry if I offended anyone.

What was up with the Tony guy at the Califone show? There was an awful lot of embracing going on. It was nice at first, but got a bit awkward right?
The show was fantastic, though.

"Tony" was really a dude named Reese from The Judy Green. The whole thing was a joke... one that went on a bit too long, but you had to respect Rutili's deadpan delivery. Reese is a great guy, btw. Very smart and very funny...
Posted by Anonymous | June 8, 2007 2:44 PM
oops. Reid, I mean. Not Reese.

And here I am thinking the guy from Califone was molested as a kid.
