I had a great time. Lots of energy from the band & the crowd. Gracias Manu! Come back always.

best music. best energy. best crowd. (beer sitch sucked ass but ....)
it's like the crew timed the rain. The downpour was perfect and loved. Makes me want to follow this show around the world. Right with he March Matt and Kim show, the best of the year.

Anyone who plays a Hollowbody is good in my book.

They kicked ass although I did miss the brass on some tunes. Did they have horns last year? Great sound, crowd, food(crappy beer)and venue. Mucho ganga and tequilla!

new york is almost not worthy of Manu

I was just talking about the energy of the crown stagefront. But you're right 3:35, I did miss out on a lot of shows. You're concert-going is no doubt superior to mine. Please show me the way.

Last night was AMAZING. One of the best concert experiences I've had in a while. The rain during the encore was unbelievable...I just couldn't believe the energy in the crowd.
Hilarious ride back to Manhattan on the F train with 1000 soaking wet people.

If anyone happened to get pics during the encore/downpour, please share!! I was scared to take my camera out.

Doesn't the plural word "pics" mean more than one pic?
Amazing concert. Wished he would come back already
(and bring some brass instruments this time)

I walked by and it sounded like reggae, then I walked by about two hours later and it sounded the same.

for the second year in a row, i walk out of my gym on 9th street to find tons of smelly hippies walking to the train.
god bless you manu...

I have to agree, Wed. nite's Manu show is up there with some of the best concert experiences I've ever had. He started the show with slow reggae and the air was stagnant & humid -- you would sway & break into a sweat but it was OK. Then he turned out some rock tunes, the crowd got more energetic, and the weather started to cool down. Then he launched into what I can only describe as speed salsa soca rhythms, & the crowd is now jumping & shaking butt. A strong cool wind starts blowing all around, making everyone dance even harder. Manu & his band exits the stage, but the crowd wasn't going anywhere, hungry for an encore. But instead of Manu, the Celebrate Brooklyn announcer comes out to say that strong & dangerous thunderstorms are about to hit & for safety reasons, Manu & the band will come out only for only one more song. Immediately, the crowd starts booing & hissing, but no sooner has the crowd start to vigorously boo then a massive flash of lightning slashes thru the sky, followed by a booming crack of thunder. It was so perfectly timed, it almost seemed staged. Of course, the crowd's energy is now fully amped. Manu comes back out, launches into another speed salsa soca tune, and as music plays, bolts of lightning are flashing across the sky, the wind is blowing, & the thunder is rumbling. All of the sudden, midway thru the encore, rain just bursts from the sky. Was there even a warning drop of rain? I'm not sure -- all I remember is one minute jumping around to the music & lightning, then thoroughly drenched the next second with a massive sudden downpour of rain. And all the while, Manu continues to play those sick speed salsa soca rhythms, so the crowd stays put, jumping & dancing in sheets of rain. Manu Chao blew up Brooklyn with a torrential downpour, thunder & lightning dance party. Summer is now officially on.

The concert was the greatest! (Other than the annoying American M.C., he's probably an intern from Ohio) The rain came just in time... too bad the Park people have to kick them off stage. There were at least 30 more mins, and 2 more encore left... Somebody said it right, NY is not worthy of Manu Chao. NY: When it rains, you keep the party going. That's where everyone starts taking their shirts off and the entire place turn into one big party group!!! Where is the WoodStock generation??? All these neo-conservative killed the American Hippies culture.... Even Manu have to set them straight: Immigrants are not criminals!!! Vive la Manu!!!

His "only one more song" had at least four parts and went on for 15 minutes. He snuck in a full encore!
We could have all been killed.

Exactly what I was going to say LL Smooth J (phenomenal name, btw). The "one last song" turned into a 3 song medley and it was SICK.
Man, I still get the chills thinking back to how nuts I was going during the downpour! Come to think of it, it was the complete opposite feeling I have right now (restricted in my cubicle, tired and hungover).

The rich people around Prospect Park don't want thousand of latinos around is the reason the concert ended early. They set the curfew on a concert-per-concert basis, and they did not want the Manu Chao to end late. The orchestral show later in the season has their blessing to end later.
Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2007 1:26 PM
i went the other night and the show was 2 1/2 hours
that seems longer than most shows.
i didn't see any latin-hating and i think nyc is a little more diverse and tolerant than you seem to think.
why does everything have to come down to race?
it was a lightening storm
i was there both nights. it's not safe to have electrical equipment in such a storm.
go pull out your soapbox somewhere else.

that is the dumbest claim ever printed in this comments

He played the Benefit concert. If they hated latinos why would they chose Manu for the Benefit? They would have chosen some boring singer and charged more $$ for tix. please
Posted by papaya princess | June 28, 2007 1:54 PM
i work for the venue... the rain only cut his set short by 10 minutes. he played from 8-10 on tuesday and from 8-9:50 last night.

I think the reason for any policing of times for this show is the drug stigma that supposed "hippie music" has attached. There were definitly some very "happy" people walking around after the show was done, including one guy I saw stashing his stash in his spare tire.

BV: please, please, please post the pics! Would love to see some storm photos. All I can find on flickr are pre-storm photos.

"for the second year in a row, i walk out of my gym on 9th street to find tons of smelly hippies walking to the train."
and you felt compelled to post about it two years in a row, imagine that. i was one of those smelly hippies, wearing my brooks brothers suit and bruno magli captoes. you might have gotten a better workout than I did (maaybe), but i'm sure i had more fun.
if the brooklyn philharmonic show does last later than tuesday's show (which went to at least 10), which I doubt, it'll be because it started at 8, rather than 6:30. if you actually believe that "the rich people around Prospect Park don't want thousand of latinos" in their neighborhood, it might have occurred to you that changing the hour of the concert doesn't actually do anything to change the number of latinos in the neighborhood. with that realization, it might have occurred to you that if "the rich people around Prospect Park" have any objections, it's to loud rock music after 10-10:30, regardless of the ethnicity of the performer/audience (which looked pretty anglo to me), and that perhaps the manu show doors were 6:30 to allow him to play as long as he wanted without providing any basis for noise complaints.
so... those extra pics?
Posted by ben | June 28, 2007 2:46 PM
Yes to the noise issue, I live a mile from where the show was, and I could hear the PA from my apartment.

i have 200+ pictures from both nights... including about 20 rain shots. ill try to get them up asap and post a link. be patient.

Can't wait for the rain shots...so pissed I didn't take any, but it was POURING out there.

Does anyone remember the name of the girl that was on before Manu Chao? I think she was pretty good (although at the time I wanted her to just go away and make room for Manu :))
