SHARON JONES & The Dap Kings - new album & 2007 Tour Dates ++ shows TODAY & TOMORROW w/ Booker T
Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings @ the 2007 Moers Festival (CRED)

Speaking of the Dap Kings, Sharon Jones has a bunch of free NYC shows coming up - including one today, and one tomorrow with Booker T & the MG's. River to River's site describes tonight's (June 13 - 7pm) show like this:
This 1992 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, responsible for creating the spare and punchy “Memphis sound,” performs a soulful show with guest vocalist, “Queen of Funk,” Sharon Jones. It's a perfect (and free) alternative to Franz and Paul. BAM's website says this about tomorrow's Brooklyn show:
Booker T. & The MG's with special guest Sharon JonesThe Brooklyn show starts at noon - timed to coincide with your lunch hour.
June 14
As the studio band that backed Otis Redding and Sam and Dave, Booker T. and The MG's are true patriarchs of rock and roll—and the classic track "Green Onions" only furthered their fame in their own right. In a match made in soul heaven, Booker T. and band are joined by Sharon Jones of Dap-Kings fame, whose sound smolders like a hot night in her hometown of Augusta, Georgia.

Langerado 2007 - Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings
On September 25th, renowned Soul and Funk band Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings will release 100 Days, 100 Nights on their self-owned independent label, Daptone Records. Since the 2005 release of their Naturally LP, the band has continued to build a worldwide following for their raw soulful recordings and blistering live performances.Sharon Jones - 2007 Tour DatesLike the highly acclaimed Naturally LP before it, 100 Days, 100 Nights was recorded in their self-built, self-operated, all analog recording studio in Bushwick, Brooklyn and bares the unmistakable Daptone Soul Sound - highly in demand among music fans and tastemakers alike. In the last year, producers such as Kanye West, Mark Ronson, Hank Shocklee, and Kenny Dope have been among those who came knocking at Daptone's door seeking the inimitable Dap-Kings sound. The Dap-Kings lend a tougher edge to their own productions for such artists as Rhymefest, Lily Allen, Ghostface Killah and Amy Winehouse. Meanwhile, Sharon Jones herself has past the time between touring lending the her soulful voice to projects for Lou Reed, Rufus Wainwright, They Might Be Giants and others.
Though these projects have helped the band branch out to new fans, it is unquestionable that their sound has never been as brutally soulful or masterfully delivered as it is on their own 100 Days, 100 Nights. The raw fire and soul which Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings consistently pour into their music will make this record and this band an irreplaceable part of many people's lives.

I don't think the Dap Kings will be at either show, just Sharon Jones. I hope it's just Sharon Jones tonight since I have to run to see Franz Ferdinand right after.

Tonight is not even really a Sharon Jones show - it's a Booker T show with "special guest vocalist" Sharon Jones - maybe just as backup. (see official descriptions above).

The MGs are an all instrumental band, so I think she will be signing lead for them on some of the Stax hits they played on. There's no one there for her to sing backup to.

On Sharon & the Dap Kings' myspace it says just she (no mention of Dap Kings) will be guesting on 4 songs:

I just got back from the New York show and a good time was had by a very large crowd. The drummer from the Letterman show did a fine job. I last saw Booker and the boys 25 years ago in Tucson, and they sound just as sweet as ever. I believe Booker was playing the same organ tpday that he was playing back then. Mr. Cropper was as fine as fine gets. If you get a chance, don't miss those tasty licks!

I just got back from the New York show (in my beloved neighborhood) and a good time was had by a very large crowd. I last saw Booker and the boys 25 years ago in Tucson, and they sound just as sweet as ever. I believe Booker was playing the same organ today that he was playing back then. Mr. Cropper was as fine as fine gets. Mr. Dunn is beyond superlatives. The drummer from the Letterman show did a fine job. Ms. Jones was very feisty and fun as all get out. I'll definitely be checking her out again when I get the chance. Don't miss the MG's when they come to your town, or you'll regret it for the rest of your life.
