The Sufjan part....
On November 1, 2 and 3rd Sufjan will be pairing orchestrated selections of both new and old material with the 25th Next Wave Festival commission/world premiere of The BQE-a symphonic and cinematic exploration of one of New York's least celebrated monuments: the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. And everything....Robert Moses' controversial 11.7-mile roadway tears through neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens with the brute force of modern urban planning, and in Stevens' hands becomes an evocation of the intersection of intimate experience and the American Dream. Merging a virtual road trip shot on film with a live band and orchestral ensemble, The BQE discovers abstract patterns and stories in the snaking traffic, potholed pavement, billboards, badly marked exits, and beautiful city views, revealing what happens when Manifest Destiny converges with urban blight.
The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) has announced the selections for the 25th Next Wave Festival, to run October 2-December 16, 2007TICKET INFOTheater highlights include the New York premiere of Hotel Cassiopeia, a meditation on the life of artist Joseph Cornell, written by Charles L. Mee, created and performed by the SITI Company, and directed by SITI founder Anne Bogart (October 9-13); Israeli playwright Hanoch Levin's drama Krum, presented by the Polish theater company TR Warszawa (October 17-20); German director Michael Thalheimer's production of Frank Wedekind's classic play Lulu (November 27-December 1); and French acrobat/actor/director James Thierree's performance piece Au Revoir Parapluie (December 4-16).
Other notable Next Wave offerings include the Cloud Gate Theatre of Taiwan (October 2-7); singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens' multimedia piece The BQE (November 1-3); Cast No Shadow, the first collaboration between visual artist Isaac Julien and choreographer Russell Maliphant (November 6-10); and composer Tan Dun's The Gate (December 5-8).

Am I reading this right? Non-subscribers have to wait until Sept to buy tickets? I feel like i'm missing something here...

Yeah - subscribers can usually buy the tickets way ahead of the general public, but all it takes to be a subscriber is to buy tickets to 3 events or more(or maybe 4, I forget and am too lazy to go check it out).

In the past, with BAM Next Wave, series subscribers get first crack at all tix. Any tickets still remaining will be made available much later for those not subscribing to the series. Which usually means - very few good seats remaining.
So if you want to see The BQE, be prepared to spend big $ for the some, or all, of the Next Wave series.
And some folks complain about the price of Bowery Ballroom Presents tickets...

at least BAM won't relocate the show to Webster Hall....

Matthew Perpetua: I always feel like the people I hate are the ones I'm doomed to live with forever. I'll be hearing all about Sufjan in the afterlife.
Rob Sheffield: It's surprising how temporary some of the people you hate are, like Wilson Phillips. I assumed those girls would be annoying me the rest of my life, but they were gone in two years. And I missed them! If I knew how temporary they were gonna be, I would have enjoyed them more. You know, this might sound weird, but the Talking Heads were in that Wilson Phillips category too.
