the 2007 Mermaid & Gay Pride parades
2007 Mermaid Parade, NYC - June 23, 2007 (CRED)

2007 Pride Parade, NYC - June 24, 2007 (CRED)

I missed two of my favorite parades this weekend. Saturday I had to take care of something that ended up taking all day, and Sunday I just stuck with McCarren Pool. Good thing there's Flickr. More Mermaid Parade pics HERE. More Pride Parade pics HERE.

Is that Jocelyn Wildenstein in the float?

Posted by jakov | June 25, 2007 3:57 AM
you can start with the archaic bible quote that says that its ok to beat your wife.

You all should just shut up.

You're right. Its ok to be gay but its not ok to use your freedom of speech.

Sorry, but the scene in the West Village, along Christopher Street, was nothing to be proud of if you're gay or lesbian, especially after the parade.
This event keeps getting more and more trashy and attracting more and more trashy people. It looked like a warzone over there.
Love, too, how much this costs NYC taxpayers to literally babysit the crowd. I can imagine upwards of $500k, minimum, with all the police overtime, cleaning crews, etc.
Awful scene over there. We couldn't even get into our apartment without practically being searched by police.

Luckily cops are only making $25,000 a year, so at the end of the day it's still a good deal.

The police union choose to have higher pay increases for the veterans and lower starting pay for the recruits.
The police got themselves into this situation. The current brass choose to be greedy at the expense of those that haven't entered the force.
It was all a scare tactic to fleece taxpayers.
Besides, the tax revenue generated for the parade most likely offset the cost of the parade. This parade is very lucrative in terms of tourism.

Aww, sorry anonymous 10:17. Before your neighborhood became a ridiculously expensive haven for vaguely bohemian yuppies, it was the birthplace of gay liberation (Stonewall). In fact, if it weren't for the queers who settled in the WV and prettied up the place, you probably wouldn't even want to live there. So maybe you should just suck it up for a day. Maybe contemplate all of the privileges you enjoy as a straight person who's wealthy enough to live in the West Village if that helps.

Err...I hope this poster was being sarcastic.
Heterosexuals flaunt their sexuality all the time...in movies, on TV, in music. Everywhere you look, all you see is heterosexuality. That's kinda the whole point of the Gay Pride Parade.

"So maybe you should just suck it up for a day. Maybe contemplate all of the privileges you enjoy as a straight person who's wealthy enough to live in the West Village if that helps."
Hahaha.. first of all, I don't live over there. My girlfriend (not rich, a student) does, and she lives in her friend's apartment. I live in Brooklyn, am far from being anything close to being considered rich, and don't relate to or associate with the WV residents you're referring to. So spare me your "vaguely bohemian yuppie" rhetoric, it's wasted on me.
Second, it's not about inconvenience and it's not about tolerating a lifestyle that I have absolutely no problem with whatsoever. At all. If you were TRULY hanging out on Christopher from Hudson on over to the river, and the entire surrounding area, and are denying the insane "trashiness" factor/crowd over there that actually has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH GAY PRIDE, then you really should get some help.
If I was gay, I would not be proud of or want to be associated with that scene. It reflects badly on the gay population, in my non-gay opinion (I'm sure you'll disagree).
It's okay to admit that it was trashy over there yesterday. It's okay to admit that most of the late-day scene had nothing to do with gay pride, and everything to do with an excuse to act like an animal that needs a babysitter. It is what it is.

I readily admit that it was rowdy over there. There are all kinds of gay people. I marched in the parade and the crowd kind of changes as you go from Midtown to the Village. But when I got to the Village, I was NOT ashamed to be gay. Quite the opposite. I was proud to be surrounded by such a diverse crowd of gay people, all having a great time! I doubt it was any rowdier than the St. Patrick's or Puerto Rican parades. You were just exposed to the liveliest part of it.
P.S. You said "our apartment" not "my girlfriend's friend's apartment, where my girlfriend lives and I spend a lot of time".
Posted by gay | June 25, 2007 11:38 AM
Yes, I should have said the babysitting goes on for the Puerto Rican Day Parade festivities, St. Patrick's, etc, as well.
Again, the gay population deserves this for all the shit they have to deal with every day. Seriously, I don't have a problem w/ it. At all. C'mon now, I'm well aware there are all kinds of gay people--it just felt like a good number of the partygoers in the area were more concerned with acting like a fool, and less with celebrating their lifestyle.
All I was trying to say is that we couldn't believe how out of hand and trashy it started getting after, say, 6pm. That's all.

I had no idea that Republicans had infested Brookyn Vegan.
Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2007 11:47 AM
ill say this...there were no good looking gay men or lesbians at the parade.

^^
deal with it, commie.

more power to the parade, but that statement is silly and simple-minded.

I love playing with myself and sitting on top of one of those long giant floats. It's all part of being gay and being proud of who i am.

That's cool 11:47. I'm sure it was annoying for you. When the Latin biker club next door to my house was blasting reggaeton at 4AM on PR Day a couple weeks ago, I wan't a happy camper either. Thanks for your thoughtful response!

Sorry, but the scene in Coney Island was nothing to be proud of if you're a mermaid, especially after the parade.
This event keeps getting more and more trashy and attracting more and more trashy mermaids.
If I was a mermaid, I would not be proud of or want to be associated with that scene. It reflects badly on the mermaid population, in my non-mermaid opinion.

Really? How?
Did you see the Franz Ferdinand vs. McCartney / Franz Ferdinand vs. stage-crashers comments?
(pause for a moment to contemplate the hazards of invoking Franz Ferdinand... ahhh what the hell)

I guess because it's not okay to say anything even remotely derogatory about the festivities yesterday. Even if they're facts, and even if they're not aimed at "the gay population at large." Because, ya know, talking about certain factions of the crowd is being anti-gay.

I think your statements are thoughtful and reasonable. It doesn't matter who you are if you are not respectful/respectable.

Well, I think that was mainly between Anon and me, and my faith in humanity was RESTORED when we reached an understanding.
When I got on the train in Bushwick with my cheesy rainboy accessories, I was nervous to be visibly gay in a neighborhood (a world, really) where people still get the shit kicked out of them for being queer. I considered taking it off and felt guilty for considering it. But when I got to the march, I was in a huge, extremely public safe space with other queers of all stripes and it felt great, as always. That's what gay pride is about for me, as a gay person. Why focus on a few jackasses?
