WILCO played Warsaw & RYAN ADAMS played Hiro Ballroom

I went to Wilco last night. It was a 2 hour and 20 minute set (the only show on the tour without a curfew said Jeff) by by one of the most talented bands I've had the pleasure of watching so up-close in a while (I mean Bad Brains was great, but Earl Hudson is no Glenn Kotche). If only our government could learn to operate a little bit more like Wilco. I say Jeff Tweedy for president.

My initial interpretation of that headline was that Wilco had performed early Joy Division songs. Terrifying misperception, that one.

The Ryan Adams show was fantastic. I have NEVER heard him sound so clear, just on top of his game and great acoustics.

The set was about 80% new stuff with some great oldies mixed in:

"Dear John"
"Winding Wheel"
"How Do You Keep Love Alive"
"Goodnight Hollywood Blvd"

....and AIC "Down in a Hole" for the encore.

Special thanks to whoever put the ticketweb link up on craigslist at about 5:15 yesterday, after refreshing 3 times, I somehow got through and got two tix. That was a clutch move and was much appreciated.

that does look like a good wilco setlist...but still, aint nothing like 1999.

The Ryan show was just fantastic. I have never heard his voice sound so good.

I have a bunch of photos from the show up on Flickr

ummmmmmm, best rock n' roll show ever? me thinks so.

Posted by matt | June 27, 2007 9:31 AM

Hopefully someone recorded the Ryan Adams show because the only word to describe last night was "beautiful."

It was also one of the best sounding shows I've ever been to. It goes to show that with the right sound engineer - even the Hiro Ballroom can sound amazing.

Posted by David McCaffredy | June 27, 2007 9:35 AM

was there a special poster for the warsaw show last night? did anyone get it? is it cool?

Posted by katchoo | June 27, 2007 10:10 AM

I went to see Ryan Adams last night after taking a long break from him-- I never got around to picking up any of his Jacksonville trio albums, so I was totally unfamiliar with that material (which naturally consisted of half the set). Looks like I'll have to pick some of those albums up now. What was that one song in the latter half of the set that had the kick-ass steel guitar solo?

Posted by Matt | June 27, 2007 10:14 AM

It was for the Red Bank, Hammerstein and Warsaw shows. Not sure who its by, but it is cool. The merch guy said they would have them online at some point.

Everyone on here that bitches about how lame NYC crowds are should have been at Warsaw last night. The most passionate crowd I have ever been a part of. The band loved it and played well past their usual stop time (no curfew) and threw in some real rarities as a thank you. The crowd took over the vocals on several tunes and everyone there(including Jeff, Nels, John, Pat) had huge smiles on their faces. It was a special night. Lots of love in Brooklyn for Wilco.

Posted by MattZ | June 27, 2007 10:30 AM

Tom Morello did for Bowery what Wilco I guess did for Warsaw. Great time last nite.

Posted by Jp | June 27, 2007 10:30 AM

Totally agree with MattZ. Had been to a bunch of shows in NYC lately (Pretty Girls Make Graves, Lilly Allen @ Warsaw, etc.), and was starting to get sick of people standing around at shows and being, well, little bitches. Last night was amazing; the crowd was almost entirely devoted Wilco fans who were singing and dancing their asses off. The few that weren't Wilco-heads were still having an amazing time. As far as the band goes, there was great energy from the group, and great songs... Great show!

Posted by dirty | June 27, 2007 10:51 AM

Amen to the people who complimented the crowd at Warsaw. So many concerts with a-holes talking over the band, cell-phoning, doing everything except their laundry...not at this one. I don't think I've ever been in a crowd that applauded a song intro, and then applauded after each verse of a song (Sunken Treasure). Yes they sang along, and they didn't act out (except for a few couples making out madly, but what the hell). Even in the back by the bar, people were actually watching and listening. Amazing. I guess when you make people stand in line for hours, show ID, etc., you weed out all the, um, undesirables. Meaning the non-hard-core.

PS The band was unbelievable. Is there a better band in North America? OK, Maybe Arcade Fire...but still: the most satisfying concert experience you could possibly have. And now with pierogies ! Kudos to Wilco and Warsaw.

Posted by David Z | June 27, 2007 11:24 AM

amazing show. they brought it.

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2007 11:27 AM

For me at least, last night at the Warsaw elevated Wilco from one of the best live bands touring now to one of the best live bands ever. Unbelievable performance.

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2007 11:43 AM

Great show last night, veteran band showed the kid bands that yes you can play for over two hours it's allowed (the hipster band hour and fifteen minute sets sometimes make me wonder) and a veteran crowd showed kid crowds that yes you can have fun at a rock show! Jeff Tweedy was in full form.
Had tix for Wilco before RA announced his show, was a little conflicted but never having seen Wilco before (much more of a RA fan) I was glad I went to the Warsaw few blocks from my house and especially seeing that Ryan didn't play the guitar (probably also not the piano?). RA may have been good last night he still is the man, but Wilco from 9:25pm to 11:40pm played their butts off and the crowd had a great time! For one night I think it was good choice but probably you couldn't go wrong either way. I love NYC music, no place like it.

Posted by rescueblues | June 27, 2007 11:44 AM

DAMN! Did they kill it last night, I'm still hearing the music till this morning till this moment.

I saw radiohead @ tower/philly, arcade fire @ radio city, and I would have to say that this is the best live performance I've ever been to.

The food. the beer. the crowd. and the band? They just sounded amazing, some songs it's like listening to the record, and when they changed it up, shit was awesome too, they even played my favorite song from the new record. Hate It Here? Not last night, everybody was loving warsaw.

Best live band on the planet? I certainly think so.

Posted by chris | June 27, 2007 11:50 AM

Awww man. I wish I was there...you guys got some good tunes we didn't get at Hammerstein. :( My review from the Hammerstein show is here: http://www.latenightwallflower.com

Posted by Fortune | June 27, 2007 12:07 PM

Yeah fuck Ryan Adams. He will be back somewhere small again this year, you can bet on it. Giving The White Stripes at Irving a run for their money for show of the year so far was of course Wilco last night
Sound was excellent if you were in the 1/3 of the crowd and probably anywhere else. Boy did they do some job on that place.
And for those who said oh Hammerstein will be better and Warsaw sucks all i can say to you is BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH FOOLS.
Really amazing show.

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2007 12:15 PM

i agree with everything 10:30am, 11:24am, 11:43am has said.
yesterday was my first Wilco show and goddamn was it beautiful.
easily the best show i've ever been to because i felt so a part of it.
i remember thinking, "wouldn't it be cool if the crowd sang along to bits like in Kicking Television?"
well.. that was EVERY song for the night.
it was incredible. i didn't expect it.
the crowd was so into it and the band played on and on and on (pun intended)
so great seeing the guys live and that close up
and the sound wasn't bad at all.
i heard everything loud and clear.

i want the recording. assuming there is a recording.
for the people that didn't go, you'll be shocked at the love you will hear.
unlike anything i've ever heard or experienced.

also gotta hear that Ryan recording.
by the sound of it, last night was exceptional.

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2007 12:22 PM

I hope somebody recorded last night's show.

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2007 12:30 PM

talented band. great show. focused crowd. beautiful night in the bk.

even warsaw played the part- best sound i've heard.

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2007 12:35 PM

who's the dude that kept yelling "RELISH!" when Jeff asked everyone what their favorite condiment was?

lol.

best band in the world. hands down, the most tight and amazing show i have seen. no precious cool bullshit. just great music and a whole lot of it. I am so tired so seeing these bands that everyone raves about and they play for 5 minutes. wilco plays for themselves and their fans. thanks for an amazing night!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2007 1:34 PM

Before the show, my friends and I were trying to figure out how many rock shows we have seen over our lives. We decided over 1,000. That being said, it was the BEST FUCKING SHOW I HAVE EVER SEEN. No lie. Wilco played with such joy! The crowd was amazing. I though it was going to be al Jaded Indie Rock 9000 and my ladies and I would be the only ones dancing (at Bonnaroo, I had to laugh. I was backstage for most shows and got to watch the crowds. It was funny bc during the indie bands, nobody moved a muscle). Everybody danced their asses off! Jeff Tweedy's fucking voice! Their tightness! The melding of crowd + band! I still can't believe all the songs they played us. It really was a special night. I heart living in Brooklyn and getting to experience the music I experience. And Jeff Tweedy, if you are reading this, the question still stands: Can I have your baby?

Posted by Ivy | June 27, 2007 1:36 PM

Ivy,
omg too funny. I was standing next to you for most of the show. I know this cause you yelled out "Can I have your baby" really annoyingly. Actually were you the girl with your friend to the right of me? or were you with the group of girls who were on the other side of me making fun of those girls on the right? Honestly i could have done without your screaming stupid comments out. In fact i could do without everyone screaming stupid things out at a band during a show. For christs sake we are there to see the band, not you ninnies who think you are their biggest fans and want to get some point across however idiotic it might be.

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2007 1:45 PM

is this the part where we talk about the slow-clap during spiders? cause that was awesome. best slow clap i've ever been a part of

Posted by katchoo | June 27, 2007 2:28 PM

simply put, this was a show that reminded me why i've dedicated my life to rock n' roll. music is my savior, indeed.

Posted by matt | June 27, 2007 2:49 PM

My favorite moment was when the Warsaw turned on the discoball while everyone sang along to Jesus, Etc. It felt like Wilco was playing my senior prom.

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2007 2:49 PM

I think my favorite song of the night was Handshake Drugs. I agree with the rest of the comments. The crowd was much better than most of the concerts I've been to lately. Everyone there were definitely big fans of the band. And if they weren't at the start of the show, by the end I'm sure they were left nothing short of amazed.

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2007 3:30 PM

Agree with all of the above. It was clear how much the band was feeding off the audience. I think they were as blown away by us as we were by them (ok, an overstatement, but you get my point). Jeff just kept smiling, which isn't how I normally picture him. The second encore just kept coming, and by the end I think they were just drained.

Random Note: The music sounds better coming out the bar speakers than it does in the back third of the venue. It's amazing how for a small venue the sound is so radically different (and bad) in the back of that place. You definitely have to get up close at Warsaw.

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2007 3:38 PM

disappointed that i didn't get to go to Wilco last night - but that Ryan Adams show more than made up for it....incredible stuff from the singer - really showing off his vocals

review here

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2007 4:02 PM

I believe the sound at the bar is out of the soundboard, whereas inside the venue it's out of the stacks. But yeah, the video and sound of the show at the bar is definitely of high quality (best of any venue) and greatly appreciated, very much an underrated part of the whole Warsaw experience.

Hey Anonymous: Was this a Wilco show or highschool?

everyone knows you have to type the time.

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2007 5:14 PM

of the 7 times ive seen ryan in the past 5 years, i'd probably say that last night was the best as far as how they sounded (not based on amusing bantar & song selection as i usually base ryry shows). his current band kills all the previous ones, particularly the guitarist.

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2007 7:36 PM

yeah Neal kicks ass.

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2007 7:47 PM

The MTV News blog guy looks pretty silly after his whinefest about Wilco playing the same songs over and over. The show last night was tremendous. The crowd and the band fed off each other and had a blast.

Posted by Joe | June 27, 2007 8:17 PM

I would love recordings as well. Has Ryan Adams recorded "Blue Hotel"? I can only find a version by Willie Nelson that I think has RA in the background - not the same at all.

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2007 10:48 PM

I was at Warsaw last night. Wilco was grand. I'd put that Jeff Tweedy up there with Dylan, McCartney, Simon, and Springsteen in the songwriting department. You go guy.

Still not sold on Ryan Adams. I guess I'm still listening and looking for that hook or reason to be interested/compelled by his music. I think part of the hangup also has to do with the fact that his name is so similar to Bryan Adams. Kinda like the guy from Office Space named Michael Bolton. Does anyone else have this problem?

Posted by David Weinberg | June 27, 2007 11:12 PM

Anyone digging Neal Casal - Ryan Adams guitarist - should check out his solo stuff. He has a collection of his previous albums that came out a couple of years ago. Totally overlooked songwriter that is finally getting his dues. Just check this with Ryan Adams in a hoodie playing drums: http://youtube.com/watch?v=BWSSljOj9fs

Posted by David McCaffredy | June 28, 2007 12:06 AM

I was bummed he didn't play "summer of '69."

Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2007 12:28 AM

By far the best part of the Wilco night was when it came time for Jeff's Hummingbird dance. He stepped back, held the mic, and...nothing. The people in front all encouraged him to dance, and he mouthed "I'm not going to do it" twice and just stood there for twenty seconds. I respected that, because I understand the need to make sure he doesn't feel obligated and that each show is different.
Then, proving that he felt the great energy of the crowd, he mouthed "okay, I'll do it" and gave us a generous belated version.

I was not there last not but im sure i would have disagreed. I have seen Ryan more than 7 times in the past and from what i have read of last nights show it would not be the best as far as they sounded but again i didnt go. And i also must disagree with the nod to his current band and guitarist. The new record is great and i have seen the new band perform on tv and i dont think it is his best. Plus, Neal Casal is great but so is J.P. Bowersock.

Anon 1:45pm:

I think it's time for you to stop going to concerts. You sound like an old hag whining about people having too much fun. Get over yourself.

Posted by eyelasssh | June 28, 2007 9:35 AM

Where did this mp3 of "Cars Can't Esacpe" come from? I've only ever heard live versions and I've always hunted for a studio version. At last! Is it from a YHF outtakes bootleg?

Posted by Matt | June 28, 2007 12:46 PM

hey anonymous 3:31:

bottom line about what you said is YOU WEREN'T THERE. so basing your own opinions on a show you were not at on what you've READ about it, doesn't mean shit. how can anyone have an opinion on something they did not hear/see/experience?! secondly, how can you disagree with my nod to his current band and guitarist? it's my opinion, i saw them play, and A LOT of people who WERE at the show, agree with me. do yourself a favor and stop exhibiting a "holier than thou" attitude. you're just trying to make yourself feel better for not being there. being that you've seen him more than 7 times in the past 5 years, i'm sure you really wish that you were. oh, and one last thing - if you had any common sense at all you would know that you can't base how good a band sounds off a goddam tv performance.

Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2007 6:20 PM

Does anyoneknow if this show was taped?

Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2007 8:28 PM

Does anyone know if this show was taped?

Posted by Anonymous | June 28, 2007 8:29 PM

Not by me. I couldn't get a ticket.

Posted by danlynch | June 28, 2007 10:08 PM

Did anyone catch Low at Hammerstein? I was looking fwd to seeing them at the 'Saw and holy poop my trousers did they lay an egg. There's nothing I respect more than doing whatever the hell you want and bidding the status quo an F You, but when you're opening make an effort to get the crowd into it. The most mellow band on the planet played as mellow as they possibly could. "Sandanista" was somehow slower than the album version. No "Hatchet," "Broadway" or "Breaker" just wasn't a crowd-friendly call.

God bless Wilco for more than compensating....
