numbers 1 and 8 should switch places

I'm surprised Meat is Murder is on there and not The Queen is Dead, which is the more influential album, I feel. Lists are ridiculous, of course, but the NME just last year said that Queen is Dead is the most influential British album of all time, past Radiohead and The Beatles!!

Posted by BrooklynveganMike | July 20, 2007 8:04 AM

what no freakin' Replacements?!?!?!?!?!

Posted by Chuck | July 20, 2007 8:23 AM

Bee Thousand?

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2007 8:39 AM

Um, no Fugazi? Really? Their ideal system alone is the infrastructure of independent records. Not too mention, Repeater and 13 Songs are amazing.

huh?

Def agree Murmur crushes daydream nation interms of indie importance!

Posted by Craig | July 20, 2007 8:49 AM

Someone's been leafing through his SPIN Guide to Alternative Music.

Posted by Martin | July 20, 2007 8:49 AM

i'm with BVmike - for me, meat is murder was not the most influential album. for me it was the eponymous album, but queen is dead is a close second.

Posted by janelle | July 20, 2007 8:50 AM

Hmmm, rather odd criteria. Nothing from the 70's (Clash, Patti Smith, Ramones, Wire, TV).
What about: Galaxie 500, Beat Happening, Superchunk, Pussy Galore, PiL, Black Flag?
Actually, given the big PiL/Gang of Four influenced indie-dance craze of the past few years, it's a bit surprising not to see either band here.
And yeah, Fugazi! By the way, the acoustic Fugazi tribute band Facoustica was good fun.

Posted by anonymous | July 20, 2007 8:51 AM

Yeah I too can not believe there is no fugazi (13 songs), guided by voices (mag earwhig)and what about the band everyone loved in the 90s but now no one seems to mention but none of the trust fund hipsters are old enough to ever have known them... PAVEMENT!!

Posted by Ross | July 20, 2007 9:16 AM

List isn't too bad, but the omission of Black Flag and Fugazi is just idiocy. I love the Descendents, but those bands are wayyyy more influential.

Posted by RKB | July 20, 2007 9:18 AM

not a bad list but pavement slanted and enchanted should definitely be in the top 5.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2007 9:27 AM

as much as hipsters love slint and television (bought both records - never got into them), suprised neither are here.

Posted by josef | July 20, 2007 9:33 AM

agreed on bee thousand and pavement's exclusions -those oversites are just plain wrong. good to see that dinosaur jr. is in the list, but #2 (?), it's hardly as good as zen arcade or let it be (replacements). and what's with squirel bait over slint?

this list is rubbish.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2007 9:48 AM

New Day Rising is the stronger Husker album

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2007 9:53 AM

Wait. So Ratch you come on a blog almost exclusively dedicated to indie rock to tell us that you hate almost all indie rock? That's like going on gawker and saying, "this is why I can't stand media gossip."

Also, they clearly are sticking to bands that released influential albums up through the mid-80s so that's why there is no Pavement or GBV or any of the bands that released their most important albums in the 90s. But I'm surprised Echo & the Bunnymen didn't even get honorable mention.

Posted by will | July 20, 2007 9:57 AM

uhh... pavement?

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2007 9:57 AM

Um..."Slanted and Enchanted," "13 Songs," "Mag Earwhig," and "Spiderland" (as well as albums by Yo La Tengo, Superchunk, and a few others mentioned in the comments) are all Indie Rock albums (capitalized because they pretty much are the foundation of the genre) and all are responsible for helping to create the sound of future micro-genres within Indie Rock. The albums on this list are more from the college and alternative rock genres that laid the groundwork for Pavement, Fugazi, et al. Still, I'm really surprised by the lack of 1960s and 1970s bands. How can the influence of Velvet Underground, Television, and Stooges be overlooked? Sure, they're all proto-punk, but they still influenced Indie Rock!

Posted by Ryan Mixtape | July 20, 2007 10:06 AM

here's what else is missing:

New Order - Power, Corruption, Lies
The Pogues - Rum, Sodomy and the Lash
De La Soul - Three Feet High and Rising

Posted by M | July 20, 2007 10:08 AM

this list is all over the place, not really good......

Posted by nolte | July 20, 2007 10:19 AM

what's so hard to understand here? no albums from the 70's, because that (including late-70's punk) was before the movement or style or whatever known as 'indie rock' began to crystalize. no albums from the 90's, because that was well after that movement has crystalized. so the list focuses on the formative years of 'indie rock' as we've known it in the last 20-25 years.

Posted by om | July 20, 2007 10:24 AM

This list is a SATAN

FOR IT OMITS WORKS DEAR TO MY HEART.

For instance:

1. Shortbread Nug - Symphony 34 in Nug

2. Forcemeat - Forcemeat says "Forcemeat ..."

3. June Borscht - Love-Maggot

4. FUTURE FACE - The First Indie Album (1958 version, not '62)

& WAY too many others to mention

FUCKING FASCISTS

GET A LIFE

GET EDUCATED

Posted by UNT | July 20, 2007 10:27 AM

The list is "bands that made indie rock" - meaning those which came first - Pavement, GbV et al are great bands but they came after the first flowering of what you'd call Indie.
But yeah, Replacements 'Let It Be'....

Posted by schlep | July 20, 2007 10:28 AM

Where's Third Eye Blind and Better Than Ezra?

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2007 10:44 AM

Of course if you take the histrionic approach

Discounting the garage/pop of the 50s/60s

The Pink Floyd - Piper at the Gates was one of the first punk albums

and let us not forget

The Grateful Dead (yes i said it!) were pretty indie back in 1965 as the house band for the Acid tests in cali -- and damn punk at that -- considering every party hosted by Todd P is exactly that except not as many people get laid -- but the music is the same -- noise freak out rock

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2007 10:45 AM

What about bright eyes and the shins?!?!!!?!?!! How could those seminal artists possibly be forgotten?

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2007 10:47 AM

Three words:

NEUTRAL

MILK

HOTEL

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2007 10:57 AM

Some glaring omissions in my opinion...

Violent Femmes, (Violent Femmes, Slash Records 1983)

Camper Van Beethoven (Telephone Free Landslide Victory, Pitch-a-Tent 1985)

Murmur deserves to be higher.

oh, and to not give props to Tom Waits and Lou Reed is almost criminal.

Posted by danny boy | July 20, 2007 10:58 AM

What? What about Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves?!?!!?

Posted by Tim | July 20, 2007 11:02 AM

Posted by ed | July 20, 2007 11:02 AM

Anything by the Soft Boys

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2007 11:14 AM

All these lists are stupid really... but it makes sense that all these records are from the 80's because in theory that set up what was known as 90's indie rock : Pavement, Superchunk, Guided By Voices, Built To Spill, Neutral Milk Hotel, Sebadoh, Archers of Loaf, Belle & Sebastian etc and later Modest Mouse, Shins

Slint should probably be there as well

Posted by RT | July 20, 2007 11:18 AM

This is abismal. Is there a rule for no 90's albums? 00's albums? At this point I think it's fair to point out things as far reaching as God Speed! You Black Emperor who opened doors for Canadian rock and post rock and even bands like Beirut. And certainly if your billing the list under that general header 'landmark indie rock albums' you'd be crazy to not put Slanted and Enchanted on top of that list for being the moment where everything that came before it crystalized into what is to this day the indie rock standard...

This list has raised my ire.

Posted by Tim Duffy | July 20, 2007 11:23 AM

It's interesting to compare how 'safe' the top 10 choices are to how out there some of the honorable mention picks are.

Posted by Devin | July 20, 2007 12:10 PM

I think you'd be a fool to not include Neutral Milk Hotel's In The Aeroplane over the Sea.

That record is arguably more influential than any of the top ten.

What important current and is really out there sounding anything like Daydream Nation?

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2007 12:21 PM

this list is _SO_ straight outta some 35-year-old publicist's desk in Chicago.

They should shoot for a job writing reviews for the Onion.

Someone's really stuck in the early 90s.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2007 12:23 PM

Daydream Nation still owns and deserves the top spot over Murmur. DN still owns regardless of when it was released. I agree, there should be some more recent stuff in the list though, especially Neutral Milk Hotel.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2007 12:36 PM

bv just postd this to make yall go comment crazy. who cares.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2007 12:37 PM

Ha ha, 'abismal', 'the histrionic approach' sound like things GW Bush would type.
Nothing to add, the list is really a pretty good one - if you accept it doesn't mean 'most awesomest indie records ever of all history'!

Posted by schlep | July 20, 2007 1:02 PM

Jesus. You dweebs are like flies to shit when these stupid lists come out.

"Dude, what about neutral olivia explosion?"

"OMG what happened to beefheart?"

"Fuck, no Scriabin? Bartok?"

"Where is Beethoven? Dude he OWNED indie with symphony 3"

"Wah! the world won`t validate my favorite record and thefore doesn`t love me!"

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2007 1:05 PM

wow, what a safe list.

where's neutral milk hotel?
where's the first violent femmes record?

Posted by craig! | July 20, 2007 1:11 PM

People do seem to get very touchy when these lists come out, personally I see it as a good way that I can get introduced to records that were coming out when I was too young to notice and I may not have picked up yet. At age 5 I wasn't generally listening to The Fall...

And as for the debate around what should / shouldn't be on the list it seems to be the premise that is the problem - if these are records that "generated the right conditions for the rock that would follow" - you need to somehow determine when indie rock started and the people who put this together seem to think that was around 88/89. Based on that it's a pretty strong list.

Posted by Alex | July 20, 2007 1:15 PM

Stone Roses suck almost as much as Neutral Milk Hotel.
jk about NMH. But, Stone Roses still blow.
Where is the Violent Femmes dammit. It was landmark. Almost all of "Indie" rock owes their first album a debt or at least a nod.

Posted by TellSoda | July 20, 2007 1:25 PM

another stupid list.

Look how they picked The Cure's "The Head On The Door" to show how obscurely hip they are, instead of Boys Don't Cry. Get the fuck outta here.

and yeah, NMH spawned a billion bands that suck today, most notably The Decemberists. Everytime I hear that Colin dude sing I think, "woah, is this a lost NMH track I never heard!?"

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2007 1:27 PM

No Beethoven? This list SUX.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2007 1:35 PM

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2007 1:47 PM

I agree with what Craig said earlier Murmur>Daydream... easy call in my book. Sonic Youth are great don't get me wrong but Murmur started an indie revolution and many many bands have been influenced by Murmurs...

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2007 1:53 PM

no silverchair? what the hell? also, no Echo & the Bunnymen due to Jesus and Mary Cain... perhaps? High Fidelity comes rushing to my brain.

Posted by stephen | July 20, 2007 2:27 PM

not to add the long obvious list of oversights but.... this one is too obvious and indisputable and quite frankly, the phoenix must have just forget existed or some wierd mind fart to have excluded....but Loveless? also for arguments sake, but really its true, not that I put it quite on the level with whats on the list, but soft bulliten is pretty important of a touchstone for the whole baroque pop branch that has been going on for a long time now. Indie rock fans love that stuff, and maybe its not "art" like daydream nation, but its a big part of the whole indie scene

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2007 2:37 PM

Neutral Milk Hotel and My Bloody Valentine???

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2007 3:08 PM

"10 landmark albums that, IN THE OPINION OF THE PHOENIX STAFF, made indie rock."

Quite aside from the fact that these lists are always, always a matter of opinion and taste, if you think that the Phoenix are the final arbiter in all matters indie, go ahead and get riled up.

Posted by Anonymous | July 20, 2007 3:12 PM

I'm with the Spiderland and Loveless suggestions, but In the Aeroplane Over the Sea was released in 1998. "Indie" was already pretty popular then. It's an influential album, but it was more influential to latecomers than it was to the likes of Pavement, Built to Spill, etc.

Posted by Mark B. | July 20, 2007 3:20 PM

Not only is this list chronologically biased (I see NO albums recorded recently listed that helped to influence the sound of albums released recently) it is also biased toward rock music--indie rock specifically. Why is Kanye West not on this list? I have certainly heard of him. I have heard of many other artists who have recorded albums as well, and I am incensed that not all of them were included in this top 10 list:

yeah, i agree. pavement had the definitive indie rock sound.

U2-October, even War to some extent. Nope, not kidding.

Posted by businessmodel | July 21, 2007 1:40 AM

When you have lists that have completely undefined variables, it just becomes offending the least amount of people or promoting records. Arguing this list is like getting mad at Vh1s Top 100 anything.

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2007 4:24 AM

lists being lists this one is valid - my stamp of approval. I do however disagree with every comment - even the ones i haven't read - except for the ones that mention yes and zz top...

pavement and gbv are influencees, nigh influences youngins'

-pa

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2007 6:29 AM

jake,

this isn't a list of influences for terrible hair styling choices, that's at barbazonvegan.com. ba dump dump.

and

matty, matt matt,

ever hear of a little band called the fall or a littlier one called the greatful dead - poof, there you have pavement, just like receess cups.

my two cents (or two nickles on the dime as the case may be, harumpf) - might have been to name check 'wake of the flood' and any one of several stooges or mc5 records as in terms of influences they are probably equalish. then there's bowie and sun ra - hey, I mean the top ten should have a list of their own top ten, then we'd be cooking daddy.

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2007 6:46 AM

pavement and guided by voices wouldn't exist without rem, but that's the real rem, pre political t-shirt switching on mtv, japanese pot bust, brain tumor rem. not the shell they are now of their former selves. the whole tape op movement was self-influential, if that makes sence, as bands recorded more they kept getting better and better until explo/implosion i.e. the aformentioned, grifters, and shutter to think (not the band) sebadoh. nirvanas list of influences besides herion (speaking of which, vu) would include most bands on this list. if that's not a benchmark indie rock success story / barometer thingy air pressure checker, god only knows (beach boys) what is.

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2007 6:59 AM

no mojo nixon? wtf?

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2007 7:07 AM

more songs about buildings and food? what would we do without those crazy talking heads?

Posted by stephen | July 21, 2007 9:25 AM

Big star, I agree we can look at a top ten for each or factorial 40 going back to before sound ever existed. Those were quiet times.

Posted by Anonymous | July 21, 2007 10:25 AM

Sebedoh degenerating into one of the most terrible bands that ever existed including each and every Lou Barlow side projects, yuck, it gives me the willies just thinking about it/him/them. How is J going to let him slither back iinto the band and even give him songs??? Any hoo, the Gimme Indie Rock single ('90), has him singing 'started back in '83...', while tounge in cheek, the song is historically accurate. Maybe that is the Rosetta Stone of this list makers plan.

Posted by Jon jon | July 21, 2007 10:36 AM

they might be giants...

Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2007 11:53 AM

i think daft punk's homework is as influential towards indie rock as any of the bands mentioned.

also... we can't forget spirit of eden which is pretty much post rock's fountainhead

it's reduntant to say but in the aeroplane is pretty crucial as far as indie rock influence goes. the instrumentation and mangum's voice are things are i hear on soo much new(er) indie rock.

and uh...kid a and tri repetae++...programmed but organic sounding electronica. which reverberates in dntel and the postal service, hot chip, the knife, the bird and the bee, blahlbahlah

actually it's not fair to get so much flak for making a list, becuase it's impossible to be completely comprehensive. there's a lot of ground to cover and you're going to miss something

but it does suck that all the picks are aged, and so safely cannonized with the antiseptic "classic" status

oh and big ups to who mentioned velvets, talking heads and pavement

Posted by gaudustophe | July 22, 2007 2:57 PM

WHATTTTTT

PUBLIC IMAGE LTD "METAL BOX"
ORANGE JUICE "RIP IT UP"

WITHOUT THESE TWO RECORDS THERE WOULD BE NO DANCE PUNK.

Posted by Colonel K | July 23, 2007 12:00 AM

while I see both minor threat, and rites of spring listed, the omission of Fugazi is v. surprising.

Posted by aquariumdrunkard | July 23, 2007 10:53 PM

wtf no marquee moon?

Posted by Anonymous | July 24, 2007 11:50 AM

ok guys, I don't exactly agree with the list, but obviously there are no albums from the 90s or recently because the list is about the music that set the stage FOR the indie rock of 90s. Unless some one in the indie bands of the 90s was a time traveler music from the 90s and recently would not have influenced them. Please at least read an article before getting all up in arms.

Posted by Anonymous | January 10, 2008 4:12 PM

but adding to my last post omitting violent femmes or television or.... allot of lesser known stuff is really a huge crime, it seems like the person that wrote this should have actually listened to more music....
