If you were at the 2007 Village Voice Siren Festival in Coney Island yesterday, you may have noticed 'Bowery Presents'-sponsored messages connected to a plane that was flying over the beach. any idea on set times yet?

Awesome. Totally worth the nightmare getting there/coming back. If the bands keep the $$$ down to $.

these tixs will be at least 45......will it be worth it?

how many people fit on this island of randall's? can someone explain this place to me? i've never been.
Posted by question | July 22, 2007 3:57 PM
how DO you get to randalls island?
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2007 4:23 PM
when they did warped tour, ozzfest, and the dave matthews thing it was like atleast 25-40,000
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2007 4:23 PM
"how DO you get to randalls island?"
you get a row boat.
you can then reach over the sea.
just make sure the black wave doesn't knock you over.
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2007 4:28 PM
that or take the bus from 125th st
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2007 4:48 PM
Damn, I would much rather this be at MSG. MSG might not be a great venue, but it's so easy to get to for me. Train from LI to Penn, and I'm there. Randall's Island may be annoying to get to.

its a breeze to get to randall"s. ferry service on east river and express buses from queens (lirr) woodside #7 ..and manhattan 125th & lex -been going to shows there since lolla in the 90's. arcade is confirmed for oct 6th.

If you've got a bike, you can get to Randall's Island easily from Astoria via the Triborough bridge. The bike lane is decent and R.I. is the first stop (The Bronx is the 2nd). From Manhattan you can take the Triborogh to R.I. from East 125th street. It's definitely the best way given that the run for the buses is going to be crazy when the show is over.
Here's the NYC bike map for those who want to check it out.

Randalls Island is really cool and easy to get to, as Molly Beckhardt explains above (3 times, no less).
Here's a link to some photos I took out there in May with my pal, Bobblehead Mozart: http://flickr.com/photos/8664407@N02/528858715/
Did you know that one of the greatest Jazz concerts ever took place at Randalls Island in 1938? That's right. There even exists some fantastic film clips of that concert with Count Basie, Lester Young, et al. Here it is: http://youtube.com/watch?v=cbubFSgUTlM
Unfortunately, the sound from that day wasn't captured, but the music here mirrors the excitement of the video (lovely inter-racial crowd - typical of Randalls Island even today).
I even hear that Jimi Hendrix played there in 1970 - his last US performance.
As they say in NYC: "gotta go to Randalls!"

For concers, there is a special event bus from 61st in Woodside next to the 7 and LIRR. Costs $4, unlimited Metrocards are NOT accepted. The line too get back from a show is HUUUUGE. Easier to drive.
Oct 6 might be too cold for an outdoor in the evening. Why isn't that space used more in the summer? Lollapalooza and the Warped Tour used to play every year.
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2007 5:43 PM
Farm Aid will be at Randalls on September 9.
Next weekend will be Rock the Bells (reunion tour for rage against the machine)
Posted by triebensee | July 22, 2007 5:48 PM
i saw the arcade fire open for the unicorns at the knitting factory and they sucked.
i can't believe they're playing randall's island.
that's fucking out-of-control.
Posted by craig! | July 22, 2007 6:05 PM
Has anyone taken the ferry to Randall's for a big concert event? Is service back better than the buses? It looks like it is $25 advance for this weekend's Rock the Bells show... not sure if I feel like spending that over $4 for a bus.
Posted by litigioushipster | July 22, 2007 6:22 PM
bus from manhattan? real men walk across the bridge.
Posted by twohotdogs | July 22, 2007 6:27 PM
hey guys i heard this rumor that craig himself (no, yes, that craig) didn't like the arcade fire when he saw them a few years ago. just letting you all know so you don't waste your money going to see some crappy band play a huge venue.

Yeah people this shows gonna suck. Everyone stay home so I can get right up to the stage! AF & LCD. My 2 favorite shows this year!(and I've seen a lot of 'em)
Posted by jjazznola | July 22, 2007 8:17 PM
amen to that. everyone stay at home and next time they'll play Irving Plaza or whatever the hell its called now :)
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2007 8:34 PM
everyone dissing the arcade fire now that they are big are idiots. i saw them in a 3700 person concert hall in dc in may and it was one of the top 3 shows of my life. Honestly they're one of the only "indie" bands who could pull off a stadium show because there music is so big (interpol obviously more suited to a lounge vibe making msg an odd choice).
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2007 9:08 PM
They never have "regular" concerts there, only festivals. Hopefully an all-day affair with more bands to be announced?
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2007 9:11 PM
i'd imagine they announce more acts and make a day of it, i cant imagine these 2 acts pulling 30,000 for a show on their own.
Posted by mbf | July 22, 2007 9:22 PM
Looks like a total pitchfork orgasm :sigh:
Posted by Anonymous | July 22, 2007 9:54 PM
maybe everyone on here complained so much about msg they thought they'd try a 20.000+ show somewhere else. i like outside fall shows...we need more of them.

HOLY FUCKING SHIT YES

YES

Might have to check this out, since I've missed all of Arcade Fire's previous NYC shows.
Anybody know how many people that new-ish stadium on Randall's Island holds? Is it a good venue for concerts? Last time I saw a show there was when the old, crumbling stadium still existed...
Posted by Dave B | July 23, 2007 1:15 AM
Wow they are playing arenas. This is gonna be expensive. Who's gonna open?
Posted by Eduardo | July 23, 2007 1:41 AM
is LCD soundsystem not enough? there will probably be someone else good.

Downing Stadium? Last time I went to Randalls Island for the Little Steven festival, I was surprised that the stadium was gone. I don't think anything else has been built.

@anon 8:53, there is a new stage/theater there, i drove past it yesterday, it's something with an I. looked it up, it's called Ichan Stadium.

i thought you could walk to randalls island from the 125th stop..i'm pretty sure thats what i did for tibetan freedom concert in '97
Posted by blunts | July 23, 2007 9:56 AM
WOW, I really can't wait for this one. This is going to be amazing.
You can always take a cab to Randalls Island too...especially if you can get 4 people in there, then you're looking at $3-5 each (depending on where you're coming from, obviously). A couple of bucks more than the subway/bus route, but 1000 times more convenient.
And hopefully they will keep the ticket price low on this one...I'm setting the over/under at $65. Any guesses?
Posted by Drugs Delaney | July 23, 2007 10:23 AM
tickets are $39.50 according to bowerypresents.com

if im taking a train from LI to penn, whats the best way to get there?
Posted by joe | July 23, 2007 10:27 AM
if you're taking the train from LI, your best bet is to stay on Long Island with all your rich compadres. We don't want you here in the city.

Pretty lame, Anonymous 10:38
Posted by Mike L | July 23, 2007 10:45 AM
if that was so lame, Mike L, why didn't you help out your islander buddy with some directions?
you obviously feel the same way. personally, I can't stand all these islanders coming out to the city for concerts. I stay away from Nassau Colliseum and Jones Beach... I wish they would do the same for me.
It's not my fault that we have Arcade Fire in the city and they have John Mayer out there.
When a community's biggest cultural achievment is Billy Joel... I'd say it's a pretty pathetic community.
Posted by Anonymous | July 23, 2007 10:49 AM
$39.50 is a pretty good deal.

What's the matter with the crowd I'm seeing?
Don't you know that they're out of touch?
Shouldn't try to be a straight A student?
If you are then you think too much.
Don't you know about the new fashion honey?
All you need are looks and a whole lotta money.
It's the next phase, new wave, dance craze, anyways
It's still rock & roll to me.

No, take the LIRR to 61st & Woodside and take the special concert bus from there.

Randall's Island is terrible for shows. Who wants to go all the way out there to see some giant impersonal festival stage in a dust-storm (if it is a dry day). This is dumb. They could easily play 2 nights at MSG if Interpol can do one. What is going on with the NYC concert scene? Why all these bizarro-world venuue announcements? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills...

You forgot about Howard Stern.

Now if someone like Radiohead was playing at Randall's Island, I would be down for paying for $50.....Arcade Fire and LCD?! Come on....they have two full lengths out......let's cut this nonsense and stop wasting your money on these hipster/hype bands and go spend money on bjork/sonic youth/sigur ros and all those good bands worth seeing......just check both of these bands in a club setting (Bowery/Irving Plaza size).....these bands are going to sound terrible in that open space....they're both NOT STADIUM size bands.....i mean who is playing there this wkend....freaking RAGE, WU-TANG, THE ROOTS, PUBLIC ENEMY....all these bands have incredible catalogues under their belt....not arcade fire/lcd......but i know with additional bands being added like the rapture, broken social scene....it might be worth seeing....i said MIGHT
Posted by get real.... | July 23, 2007 7:10 PM
I bet if they offered you free all you can eat hot dogs and you didn't have to walk across a long bridge to get there you'd show up.

Uhh, for the LI hater above --
Brooklyn is on Long Island, although you probably haven't looked around lately. So is Queens. And Randall's Island is an island so it looks like neutral territory to me.
And Strong Island has given us Public Enemy, EPMD, LL Cool J, and Lou Reed to name just a few.
Posted by swamp thing | July 24, 2007 11:03 AM
strong island... wow. people still say that?
when referring to long island, I think people are talking about Nassau and Suffolk counties. Most people who live here are aware that Brooklyn and Queens are physically on the same island... but it's really a different world.
Honestly, I hope I live the rest of my life and never have to go east of Little Neck.

Does anyone out there besides me think that Arcade Fire is lame? And that this often borders on being a fan page for them? Pictures of them playing basketball for fuck sake? Yawn! As for the guy that saw them open for the Unicorns at the Knit you know that at the first Bowery show they announced how excited they were to play in NYC for the first time? I was there and shocked because it was actually like their 10th show here that year. Boring boring boring. Next.

FWIW, several years ago I read that the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Long Island is a peninsula and not an island. But I never read that anywhere else, so take it with a grain of salt.

Nobody interested in Caribou the same day? Does someone know the time Arcade and LCD are gonna play? I would like to catch Caribou at night.
Posted by Eduardo | July 25, 2007 4:20 AM
Forget about whether you like Arcade Fire or not (I like them and have seen them at Irving Plaza and Radio City). Why would anyone want to see them at Randall's Island in October? This show is better off being at MSG given the possible inclement weather, the size of the field at Randall's Island, and the accessibility of transportation to MSG.
Posted by Adam | July 25, 2007 7:23 AM
does anyone want to talk about the fact that this is just going to be a fun show.... yes the sound will probably suck.... yes it might be cold..... yes randalls island is kind of a pain to get to... but what this means is that only people who really want to be there will go.... im so sick of going to shows in nyc full of hipsters who are just there because some newspaper or magazine said it was the cool show to go to.... all of you can stay home and let people who want to be there dance and have a good time.... if you can't dance to LCD Soundsystem you don't deserve to go to this show. I've been to too many shows in NYC where the crowd is just too hip to dance. I'm over it.. stay home and let me have a good time!! I'll be the guy in the front dancing like I'm having a seizure when LCD takes the stage. Sometimes the politics of whats cool and whats not takes front row to having fun, and that is exactly what this music is not about. If you don't think The Rapture are talking about you NYC hipsters when they say "people don't dance no more" than you are probably the jackass who gets mad at me for shaking my white ass!! Believe me, if this tour was coming somewhere else, like Philly or Boston, I would probably be there instead!! Peace.....

"Nobody interested in Caribou the same day?..."
I was going to go to the Caribou show until I heard these guys were playing the same night. Caribou is amazing live. But I really want to see LCD Soundsystem, never seen them before. And I've seen Caribou three times by now. They are playing another show the next day at SUNY Purchase in Westchester. If there are any Purchase students out there that can fill me in on the details for that one, it'd be appreciated.

Whatever happened to just going to a show, not caring where it's at, who goes to it, and how hard it is to get to?
Yeah, I'm from Jersey and with all the nonsense I just read, there's a couple spoiled little bitches on here. I don't even listen to Arcade Fire, but be lucky that they are playing anywhere near where you live.
I went to Randalls Island yesterday for Rock The Bells Festival and the last thing on my mind was how many people from Long Island were there, how many from Manhattan, how many from Brooklyn, Queens, etc.... I was there to see some great live hiphop sets and that's what I saw. I left 4 songs into Rage's set, because me? Yes, I'm spoiled as well having seen Rage several times in the '90s.
Say what you want, I was born and raised in NJ and have worked in Queens, have been going into NYC my whole life. Stay in your boro with a closed mind if you don't like people from other boros or states. That's a great way to experience life. Why venture into new places and environments? Wow, you'd actually have to learn new things and get out of your comfort-zone... I guess that's a little mentally challenging for some.

You poor, miserable bastard. I feel your pain. If I can get through life without having to step foot in jersey, or at least keep it to a decent minimum, then I will be a happy person.
