You missed out BV. BTS was wonderful. Great BTS photo!!

Am I the only person who thought CP fell off the wagon and was plenty tipsy? Half the times she tried to banter w/ the crowd she couldn't put a sentence together.

Artists need to get over the notion that fans paying $40 to see them want to hear mostly new/unreleased songs they've never heard. Always disappoints.

This show was fantastic - it doesn't get much better than sitting outside on a perfect summer's night listening to 3 of my favorite musical performers. And I have to say, I'd seen all 3 before and they had ALL improved so much. Bob Mould just gets better with age, Cat Power made me dance instead of fall asleep and BTS were incredible with the highlight being a kickass Brian Eno cover. I went on a whim and it was well worth my $35!

I was actually impressed by Cat Power's performance. I have seen her twice, once at Bonnaroo and once at one of the horrible Hiro Ballroom shows. She did really well at Bonnaroo '06 and Hiro ballroom was one of the worst shows that I've ever attended. My friends and I think that the key to catching a good Chan performance is making sure that she has a band backing her up. They wouldn't let her talk for more than 15 seconds without starting to play. It was good for her to have a driving force so that she would actually finish all of her songs and not rant psychotically.

I'll admit, Cat Power was boring compared to BTS, but I'm happy that she didn't completely meltdown, although that can be somewhat entertaining in a completely uncomfortable kind of way.

What was up with the end of BTS? No encore, just, "the end".

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2007 12:21 PM

did anyone else get there at 7:30 or after due to the DOORS AT 7:30 listing on the Free Williamsburg pool calendar?

lame.

Posted by H | July 9, 2007 12:21 PM

was it me or did cat power play a ridiculous amount of covers. I only recognized two songs as her own. I know she covered Gram Parsons "Dark end of the Street", Frank Sinatra "New York, New York" and at least two others.

I prefer BTS's crafted pop gems to their jammy stuff. But Else, Carry the Zero, and Car were amazing. Really wish they'd played Goin Against Your Mind, Big Dipper, You Were Right and Strange.

Pool was great, short lines, good sound.

Anyone have CP's setlist?

Here's BTS':

Liar
Velvet Waltz
The Source
Nowhere Nothing Fuckup
Else
Wherever You Go
In the Morning
Third Uncle (Brian Eno cover)
Car
Mess With Time
Made Up Dreams
Time Trap
Carry the Zero

Posted by e | July 9, 2007 12:40 PM

judging by the actual paper setlist which i got a pic of on my blog, "carry the zero" was the encore, but they probably dispensed with the band off the stage for a short break b.s. in order to make curfew.

Posted by Qbertplaya | July 9, 2007 12:53 PM

No Shep, you are not alone. Everyone i went with thought Cat Power was horrible. And we love her.
How do you put out a stellar album like "the greatest" and not play one song off it. Boring.

Posted by james | July 9, 2007 1:20 PM

Hey James,

She did play two songs off of the greatest (could we and willie), but yeah, it was ridiculous how unfamiliar most of the tunes were and her backing band tended to veer on the bland side. Fortunately, BTS rocked the house.

Slightly off-topic, but who was it who spoke after the Cat Power set and called for the impeachment of George Bush? Not Amy Goodman but the other person.

Posted by Jacob | July 9, 2007 1:57 PM

Cat Power apparently has another covers record coming out in the fall or early next year...hence all the covers...I thought she sounded great & her band was really tight but I would understand if people came to hear the"hits" and were disappointed...but The Greatest is a year & half old & she's moved on to her next thing and has a new band....she's never done anything conventionally and I don't think she's about to start now.. and no she wasnt drinking...she's always had weird/nervous energy on stage that makes people think she's high or drunk....Even though it was $35 it was still a killer bill with all three acts that could charge $25 a piece if they wanted

has anyone found the cat power set list yet?

I think that was Sam Seder from Air America.

Sam Seder it was

sorry TY but one covers record was enough. she completely butchered the stones "satisfaction". she didn't have to play her hits, we would have just settled for her own music period. i would never pay thirty bucks to see ANY cover band.

Posted by james | July 9, 2007 3:42 PM

WOW BOB MOULD LOOKS SO HOT!!!!!!!!

Posted by daddylovr | July 9, 2007 3:43 PM

I'll pass along your comments to her next time I see her...maybe she'll think twice about the new covers record since you dont approve & play note for note versions of classic songs...did you actually listen to her first covers record ? (where she does Satisfaction without the chorus) she never takes the straight approach at someone else's song..its been well documented...I did also say I can see why people would be dissapointed...she can only be herself.. you wont be back , others will ..life goes on..

Posted by TY | July 9, 2007 4:11 PM

I thought Bob Mould was horrendously boring. BTS was unbelivable though, great show.

Now, correct me if I am wrong, but did anyone else feel like they were a bit ripped off? Going to see a show at the pool willbe a question for me from now on. $35 to get in, and then $3 water and $6 half pints of beer? I realize some money goes to keeping the free shows, but this isn't Woodstock '95, this is a chilled out pool in Greenpoint!

Posted by Douglas | July 9, 2007 4:17 PM

@TY

yeah, of course i listened to that record. pretty bad. i have to admit...her version of "wonderwall" on her Peel session was pretty good. OK, i'm gonna stop complaining now. you win.

Posted by james | July 9, 2007 4:21 PM

I didn't feel bad about spending $6 for beer because I got my tickets for free from Absolut. The hour that I waited at Other Music was well worth it.

I was, however, a bit confused by the increased price of beer from Saturday to Sunday.

I wish I was you?

Dear god I thought that was the most boring show everrrr. Plus, I missed Cat Power's set due to the 7:30 DOORS shit online. Lame!!

Posted by Emma | July 9, 2007 5:49 PM

chan needs to get back on drugs and make good music again.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2007 6:05 PM

perhaps all these people who are complaining about wrong information on the doors time should have checked an official site, such as the ticketmaster site... which correctly listed a doors time of 5:00pm (okay, maybe they opened doors at 5:05, but it was close enough).

and as for those cat power naysayers... um... seeing her sing otis redding's "loving you" was worth the price of admission alone. chan has never really been one for repeating herself, and she's already played all those songs from "the greatest" in new york... numerous times.

or, let me guess, did you miss those shows at Town Hall? or her "final" concerts with the mephis rhythm band at irving? or one of the "good" (i heard some of them sucked) shows at hiro ballroom. i saw an amazing 2-hour solo set there where she played a lot of "hits".

the cat power set on saturday was great. completely different than any other time I've seen her. it was the 5th time I've seen cat power in the last 7 years and each time was completely different than the next. I only saw one show where she "choked" (it was on the covers record tour). the show at MoMa sucked, but that was because the crowd wouldn't shut up.

Posted by Anonymous | July 9, 2007 7:02 PM

Was Brendan Canty on drums for Bob Mould's set? Or was he solo?

Posted by MP | July 9, 2007 7:24 PM

at the end of the show when attempting to get the built to spill set list, someone through a cat power set list towards me
New York...
Dont Explain?
Silver Stallions
I Lost Someone
A Woman Left Lonely?
Naked
Making Believe
Hey Aretha
I Been Living You
Life o' The Party
Could We
Lord Help/ Song To Bobby
Dark End

Bob Mould is a shell of his former self! Husker Du, Sugar and first few solo releases were great. What happened?

Posted by jjazznola | July 10, 2007 1:10 AM

BTS and cat power make great records... but were the equivalent of watching grass grow live at McCarren. it was pathetic. CP was like watching their rehearsal and BTS (who i've seen countless times) were obviously there for the paycheck. I've seen better shows at Trash Bar.

Posted by db | July 10, 2007 1:36 AM

Bob Mould was solo; half-acoustic half-electric. He switched in the middle (although his blog said it was only going to be an acoustic show, which almost made me not go).

Posted by bsd987 | July 10, 2007 8:04 AM

re: anonymous 7/9 7:02

checking the ticketmaster site for accurate details would make sense, had the pool site NOT posted 7.30 as the start, or if the tickets had had a door time on them. seeing as they said TBA, why wouldnt you believe the mccarren site? also - one song is NEVER worth 35 dollars. unless you're a millionaire, which, i'm guessing, most people at the show weren't. and for those of us who felt ripped off, we were. and that's fucked up.

i arrived at 8 (via the boredoms) and was super pissed off only to hear "willie" and the band introductions. so i made a stink, found the promoter, who apologized and gave me a free beer, before getting another promoter, who promised me two tickets to any livenation show in nyc. so yay for that (especially since it sounds like i wouldn't have enjoyed cat power very much), but still, the lesson is, obviously, always check ticketmaster.

and db - i agree with you about bts. they're one of my fave bands, and this was like the 3rd or 4th show for me, and it just felt like they were going through the motions. "car" was special, being solo and all, but something was obviously lacking. these shows always seem like big deals, seeing a bunch of good artists all together, but a lot of the magic is gone in a space like that. one exception - last year's sonic youth/yeah yeah yeahs show, the first night, when sonic youth opened AND encored before YYS came on. that was something fucking else.

Posted by bentrup | July 10, 2007 10:01 AM

i wish cat power would write a song about how much homework sucks. i hate homework!!

Posted by Anonymous | July 10, 2007 1:19 PM

well, i have to say the whole feeling of being ripped off should be nothing new to anyone who's ever used ticketmaster.

the more disturbing things to me were:

1. the fact that i thought i was arriving early-ish only to find out that cat power was halfway through her set (which, unfortunately, i ended up being up thankful for. sorry, cat lovers, i think she's past her prime).

2. the fact that not only did we get no encore, but we were basically shoved out after the bts set. i believe the mc guy got to the mike before doug martsh even left the stage only to tell us (and i paraphrase), "thanks for your cash suckers. now get the fuck out".

no wonder people shit on the toilet seats.

Did no one notice the Blues Explosion's Judah Bauer on guitar for Cat Power? Good to see him back.

"My friends and I think that the key to catching a good Chan performance is making sure that she has a band backing her up. They wouldn't let her talk for more than 15 seconds without starting to play."

I once saw Cat Power play at the Bowery Ballroom in the late 90's when Moon Pix came out and I tell you that Chan having a backup band does not assure you of seeing a good performance. The guitar player basically tried to start each song between all the blather-blather coming out of her mouth. He just kept playing really loud. Eventually, he and the drummer walk offstage and Chan continues to yelp into the mic. I remember her flopping on the floor in the audience and talking up to the ceiling. One of the worst shows I've ever seen.

Posted by Champ | July 10, 2007 8:38 PM

spoiled, spoiled children...

have you guys been to shows at mccarren pool before? they ALWAYS end early. what makes you think if you get there at 730 you're getting there early. the assholes around the place set a curfew for 10pm. dumbasses
