Bottom of the Hudson van accident -- RIP Trevor

DOWNLOAD: Bottom of the Hudson - Beehive (MP3)

Bottom of the Hudson

Philadelphia/Brooklyn band Bottom of the Hudson suffered a serious van wreck on Sunday, July 29th, while returning home after the final date of a short East Coast tour to promote their new album, Fantastic Hawk, released just two weeks ago on July 17. While on I-40 near Clinton, NC, a tire blew out sending the van out of control and flipping it multiple times. Bassist Trevor Butler was killed in the accident and drummer Greg Lytle is currently in ICU in Chapel Hill, NC. The other members of the band, Eli Simon, Michael Prince and William Chesterton Chambers, suffered minor injuries and were released from the hospital.

Trevor ButlerWe didn't have an opportunity to get to know Trevor Butler as well as we would have liked, but he was a great guy and a great musician. He was instrumental in the evolution of the band's sound over the years. In addition to playing in Bottom of the Hudson for the last several years, Trevor also was a founding member in fellow-Philadelphia group Coyote. He was utterly devoted to music and helped many, many bands set-up shows in Philadelphia. We are devastated by his loss and he will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the band and their families. Thanks to everyone who has sent condolences and well-wishes.

We are currently accepting donations via Paypal (the address is both@absolutelykosher.com) on behalf of Trevor's family and for Greg's medical bills resulting from the accident. A benefit show is being discussed, but we're all still reeling from this tragedy. We will update our home page as news of Greg's condition and progress on further fundraisers comes in. Your generosity in this difficult time is appreciated.

best,
Cory Brown and everyone at Absolutely Kosher Records

RIP Trevor

i really hope some phila bands/promoters put something together for these dudes. celebrate his life and their artistry. good guys. god bless family and friends.

very sad, this happens way too often...bands traveling unsafely in the back of a van with equipment, not strapped in and just sitting on the floor.

Jesus that's sad as shit. My heart goes out to the family and friends.

Yeah, 10:47, let's blame the bands!

Posted by Anonymous | July 31, 2007 10:53 AM

it doesn't sound like anon is blaming the bands at all. he's just describing an unsafe situation that's the result of not being able to afford a tour bus, two cars, etc.
why do you have to be quick to snap at someone who is expressing sadness over a tragedy?

Posted by Anonymous | July 31, 2007 11:00 AM

I think 10:53 was trying to be ironic with very poor taste. jerk.

Posted by Anonymous | July 31, 2007 11:19 AM

I think you are giving 10:53 way too much credit/benefit of the doubt

R.I.P.

I never heard of this band, but we were traveling on the interstate, and got stuck in all the traffic immediately following the accident. The site of the van, and feeling like something bad had defintitely happened, prompted me to search for the info on the victims when we got home. That led me to the info about the band, and I listened to some of their stuff online which sounded awesome. I feel so bad for the guys and their families.

We were one of the first people at the scene of the accident. There were many people that stopped to help, a couple of docs and nurse and anyone who was CPR certified. We stayed with all of them until the were all taken away by ambulances, trying our best to comfort them in anyway. My friend, Holly stayed with Greg trying to keep him calm and still since he was seriously injured. We all tried our best to keep Will, Eli and Michael from fearing the worst about Trevor, but what do you say? Saying "it's going to be alright", just doesn't cut it. Holly got a hold Greg's dad and Will's girlfriend to let them know what happened and where they were all being taken to. We've been checking on Greg everyday. Actually talked to him around 9pm, he's now in a room and said he may be able to go home either tomorrow or Friday. It makes my heart glad to know that there are still people in this world that are willing to lend a helping hand. God Bless the doctors, nurses and everyone else that was at the scene, helping out anyway they could. The only thing that truely pissed me off was the man (passerby) who was taken pictures of everything and I mean EVERYTHING. He was helping with the traffic also, so maybe he had a very good reason for it, I just can't think of what it would be. And of course the stupid women who drove past slowly hanging out her window asking "was anyone hurt"? Some people just have no class or diginity whatsoever! We didn't know the guys, but have been thinking about them all week and praying for them and their families to find the strength to cope with this tragic ordeal.
If you can donate anything to Trevor and/or Greg's families I know they would really appreciate it. Also, it wouldn't hurt to carry a first aid kit in your vehicles. I know I will. May God bless the guys and their families. Rest In Peace, Trevor.

As we were on our way home sunday from a day a the lake. I was in the back seat laying down bein 7 months pregnant I was tired. When my husband said look. I looked up to see the van flipping. We stopped my husband, my friend becky, and myself took off running down I 40. As we approached the scene people were stopping to help while others were stopping to be noisey. The first person I came to was trever. I seen he was being helped. So I walked to the next which was Greg. I nelt down beside of him and talked to him like I knew him. I tried to make him comfortable by holdin his hand even giving him water. I stayed with him until they loaded him up and took him to the hospital. Mean while Becky talked to Eli and Will trying to assure them everything would be ok. After everyone was gone we picked up what we could to mail back to them. I actually talked to Gregs dad and told him about the accident. Promising to keep me informed about his condition he called me a couple of hours later and gave me a update. I have called everyday and talked to the nurses to see how he was doin. And just last night I got to talk to Greg. That was the greatest thing. He actually thanked me. That made me feel so good. I pray for everyone to make a full recovery. And I am praying for Trevers family. Just remember just because you dont know someone that doesn't mean you can not help in the time of need. Even if it is just holding someones hand.

"i love how even in death, the brooklynvegan comment section is still fighting with each other."

You misused the phrase "even in death." The commenters to whom you are referring weren't posting from beyond the grave.
