Courtney Love played Hiro Ballroom....
....and that's it. She played. People waited on line, and she played a show. Boring, I know....Hey, she just turned 43. She's all grown up now! (oh wait, nevermind).....
Courtney Love @ Hiro Ballroom, NYC - July 12, 2007 (CRED)

"Courtney Love's selective new-album-hype tour stopped in NYC last night for a midnight performance at the Maritime Hotel's Hiro Ballroom. An 11:00pm start time turned into midnight real fast as the place quickly filled up with free-show RSVP'rs...including celebs Laura Prepon and Danny Masterson. Oh, and it was hot as a mofo in there." [Fresh Bread]
"When I entered Hiro Ballroom around 11, I wondered what possessed me to spend two hours in line to see Courtney Love." [katesilver]
"courtney looked BEAUTIFUL. like this shining star...really, the woman is unearthly...so gorgeous.
she sounded so fresh and clean and really nailed it. she played about 20 songs..LOTS AND LOTS of new ones...(im totally obsessed with "Never Go Hungry Again"...had tears rollin down my eyes)
..and it was great to hear the classics like "miss world" "malibu" "doll parts" "northern star" and "celebrity skin" [Amanda Demanda]
"Everything sounded like classic Hole and I believe that the album could reinstate Love as the queen of rock. Her voice was stronger than I have heard it on past live recordings and she can still scream bitter angst like no other. The band sounded amazing. The people in the crowd, which were mostly die hard fans-- since you would have to be in order to wait to get in, seemed to enjoy it and listened patiently. When she sang "I'm Miss World," everyone, including myself, went ape shit." [Brewed Fresh]

"When she sang "I'm Miss World,""
Ummm...the song is actually "Miss World"...poseur moron.

Was she selling any of her former husbands socks or underwear at this show?
You know there's a place for everyone in this world when people will wait two hours in line to see Courtney Love in 2007.
Posted by natenallq | July 13, 2007 11:37 AM
Was she coherant and/or sober?
Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2007 11:38 AM
I agree natenallq, and it will never happen again for this woman from me or my friends. Waiting for hours to not get in then get treated like sh*t from the door people. Waste of time!!
Posted by anonymous | July 13, 2007 11:41 AM
Uh, to the first poster-- I believe that quote meant when she sang the words "I'm Miss World." You know, that words that BEGIN the song. Poseur moron.
Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2007 11:42 AM
ummm....a-duh....der...ummm

How is it Courtney Love's fault the door people were rude?
And since when do rock shows start on time? It sucks that she didn't go on until midnight, but it was only an hour. If she was scheduled to go on at nine but didn't do so until midnight, I'd understand the complaints.
Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2007 11:51 AM
It's not her fault that what happened went down the way it did, but her people were part of the madness.
Posted by anonymous | July 13, 2007 11:55 AM
is it even worth mentioning danny masterson was there? he goes to every damn show in new york.
then again, he needs credit for something considering his career died what, 3 years ago?

i have no sympathy for anyone who didnt get in. everyone knew the event was free, capacity was very limited, and that an insane number of people rsvped. i was fairly ambivalent about going and walked by at 730 to see what the line was like and there was maybe 100 people, but probably not even nearly that amount (im bad at the guesstimation). i figured , why the hell not, and got in line and yah i waited forever but i knew that would happen. so if you came strolling up at 9, yah, you probably didnt get in, but you are a dumbass for being pissed about it. i mostly went for nostalgic reasons and i must say, while her lack of knowing the lyrics was a bit disappointing, everything else was pretty great. her new material is quite good (minus that cheesy linda perry ballad, which courtney even stated was a bit bon jovi-esque), and the instrumentation and arrangements on the new stuff was better than expected. she is frightening looking, however. she made numerous cracks about being anorexic and then chugged an ensure drink, so who knows. but she was on point (except when she attempted to stand up on a speaker? and failed miserably two times and gave up) and was humorous. the songs are there, so the album has a lot of potential, it all depends on production (at least for me that is).
and danny masterson needs to get a life.

my ladyfriend and i got lucky and surpassed the line, so i'm not as bloody aggravated as some folk. i thought the show was great. she has an incredible presence and it was funny when she dissed madonna. i also really liked 'never go hungry again'
Posted by me | July 13, 2007 12:17 PM
You know dude, you really don't have a clue about what the frustration was with not being able to get in. It's one thing to not get in after waiting, that's a risk everyone took. What sux and is worthy of being pissed about were the jerk-off door people who told people in line that they were at capacity then turned around and shuttled their friends and their friend's friends. That's what sucked! No need for ur sympathy.
Posted by anonymous | July 13, 2007 12:23 PM
Perhaps "me" was one of the a$$hole door guys friends?!? Lovely....
Posted by anonymous | July 13, 2007 12:25 PM
"my ladyfriend and i got lucky and surpassed the line,"
By surpassed I assume you mean CUT the line.
Many people were doing this, some successfully, some not so successfully. security was throwing people off the line who clearly were cutting it at the last minute, but some managed to sneak in anyway.
If you managed to cut the line in front of someone who had been waiting hours and you didn't have to, I would keep it to yourself and not be so proud of it. You didn't get "Lucky", you were dishonest and didn't get caught. Why not just keep that to yourself, rather than pissing off people here that were on line waiting and didn't get in?
Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2007 12:25 PM
"surpassing" is the new cutting.
Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2007 12:26 PM
Ahhhh! A voice of reason in all of these gloaters posts! Finally!!

Last night represented what I hate most about New York nightlife,"the scenesters."
All the people i.e. actual fans that RSVPed as requested on going.com just waited in line for hours while all the misshapes crowd sauntered in because doorman is their friend. Seriously every vapid wanker that has ever been graced in gawker's blue state loses, cobra snake or lastnightparty.com was allowed in with a kiss, kiss, hey hey.
All the poor people who were waiting patiently didn't have a chance to get in. I mean espicially if they never had a meaningful conversation about their myspace pages at 2 in the morning in the bathroom of luke and leroy while doing rails.
What a shame....

All these free shows need to stop. So much easier to spend $20-30 a ticket and not have to deal with hassles. If it is sold out, oh well, at least I didn't wait for hours for nothing.
Free shows are a bad deal.
Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2007 1:00 PM
Going.com is about as useful of an RSVP as a rolled up piece of paper with your name on it thrown into the Hudson. I hope they're going.com back to the depths of marketing hell from whence they came.

I have no sympathies for people who actually got in and had to suffer through the show.
Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2007 1:19 PM

Show was OK, I got in line pretty early (7:20 or so) and as I told the girl next to me..the line may seem short know but wait until an HOUR before the show and watch it grow!
People always come in at the last minute, so don't be surprised if you got turned down the door.
It was pretty chaotic for a while as many of the usual MePa crowd were wondering if the line was to get in to the posh-posh restaurant above (I got asked abotu it more then 20 times!)or what was going on. It got annoying after a while but it's understandable.
The door people were definitely not letting everybody in (not at the restaurant or Hiro) and there was a couple of altercations (at one point a tomboy-ish woman who apparently worked for Courtney got into a huge altercation with security...even the cops were called).
I was very suprised to see that she really DID work for Courtnery (saw her onstage as part of the crew) and not just some rabid obsessed fan.
Never been to Hiro before so I did like that it looked different then the other venues (was also very annoyed that a load of people were let in ahead of the ones who waited in line for so long).
Courtney was her usual trainwrecky self..she was fun to watch!
However the chaos outside was far more entertaining then the actual show!

did anyone witness courtney's assistant outside fighting and flailing with security -- shortly thereafter security had to restrain the assistant.
and here is the line: "MY BOSS IS COURTNEY LOVE. AND SHE JUST WANTS SOME FISH. I'M GOING TO SHUT THIS PLACE DOWN"
hilarious.
Posted by tito puente | July 13, 2007 1:54 PM
i waited...only got in for the last 3 songs....but atleast I met the name rapper in the Dr. Suess hat.
People need to stop complaining...you really should have known what you getting into before you jumped on line.

Since the begining of time people who know people,"the scenesters" as you call them and famous people will always get into shows before you and I. It's nothing new. Also I'm sure all those who got in love the idea of free shows. Only those who did not think they are a bad idea. They are all about publicity. Stop whining, Courtney will be back soon enough if she can keep her shit together. Oh yeah, who fuckin' cares what celebs are at shows!

Haters and whiners...get a life. Go to a bar and make the best of it.
When I didn't get in to Patrick Wolf (same location) I ended up having a great time anyway. It's the way you look at life.
So a guy slips the bouncer $50. Big deal. If it meant that much to you to get in, you should have done it too. Can't afford it? You should have taken school seriously, thought about your future, and got a good job.

The asian doorman last night was so obnoxious and on a power trip. My boys and I waited on line like everyone else and he flat out turned us away. Something about too many guys. What kind of door policy is that? It was ridiculous. To rub salt on the wound he turned around and let a bunch of guys in on the other side. Never again bro. Never again.
Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2007 3:55 PM
My friends and I, girls and guys offered the asian guy $250 to get us in, he just looked at us sarcastically and said “are you trying to insult me” “Get off my line”. What the heck was that? My money was as good as the people he let in. I don’t understand. can someone explain to me how this club stuff works? it wanst even a club night. We came to see Courtney Love for my girlfriends birthday. He was so insensitive.

'So a guy slips the bouncer $50. Big deal.'
So how much of a sucker are you to pay fifty dollars for a free show?
Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2007 4:41 PM
look at it this way. you saved $250.
No way was that show worth that anyway.
Having seen the show, I would rather have $250 bucks in my pocket.
Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2007 4:43 PM
"slipping" someone a bribe and "offering" a bribe are too different things.
Perhaps your $250 offer was within earshot of his boss, or other employees. He might not have had a choice to turn you down.
Also, how does he know you are serious about your offer? Slipping someone money ensures that it kept low key and the person being bribed does not necessarily have to flat our acknowledge it verbally. Otherwise he has to "Accept your offer" and then conduct a transaction.
You need to learn the fine art of bribery.
On the other hand, you could have slipped him $250 and he could have kept it and still not let you in.
If you were really willing to pay that kind of money to get into a free show, I'm sure there would have been a way to accomplish it in advance.
Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2007 4:51 PM
"So a guy slips the bouncer $50. Big deal. If it meant that much to you to get in, you should have done it too. Can't afford it? You should have taken school seriously, thought about your future, and got a good job."
When a show like this is FREE, one assumes that dedicated fans, willing to stand around for hours, will not be kept in line while those with "good jobs" buy their way in. I didn't get turned away last night, but I find your attitude completely fucking gross.
I'm not one to jump on somebody and say they're everything wrong with this city, but hey: you're everything wrong with this city. Or pretty damn close.
Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2007 5:29 PM
but...but....but....I'm a FAN!
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaa waaaaaaaaaa waaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
The real fan is the guy who paid ME $50 to take my place right up front in line! Hope it was worth it, sucker!
I guess the real suckers are these losers who didn't get in! HAHAHHAHA
Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2007 5:41 PM
"it wanst even a club night. We came to see Courtney Love for my girlfriends birthday. He was so insensitive."
What? A bouncer in New York City insensitive? And even after he knew if was YOUR girlfriend's special day? Unheard of! Someone should call and file a complaint immediately. I'm sure Hiro wouldn't want an insensitive bouncer on their staff!
Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2007 5:48 PM
I don't know what everyone's complaining about. We were 6 dudes deep when we got to the front of the line. When the asian bouncer said there were too many guys, we simply explained that we were fans. He not only profusely apologized for his oversight, but personally escorted us in, and even bought us a round of drinks before returning to his post.
Ya'll must've done something really bad to piss that fine gentleman off!
Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2007 5:56 PM
Jarvis Cocker should sue those assholes for stealing the name Misshapes and rebranding it for their stupid club nights, or whatever it is they call it. Not to get off-topic, but, still...it pisses me off.

"Fan"- you know, somebody who loves Ms. Love's music. As opposed to "douche"- somebody who feels like the world can kiss their ass because they have money.
When a bouncer takes a bribe, it doesn't go to the artist, the venue, or anybody else who works there- just him (probably encouraging him to be even more of a prick so people feel like they have to buy him off to get in) and the douche who buys his way in.
If somebody buys your spot in line, fine, nobody's getting screwed. Though I wonder why you would wait hours to be in the front of the line, only to be bought out for $50. Sounds like YOU need a "good job".

You're probably one of those button-down-shirt-wearing Midtown douchebags that are unfortunately becoming more prevalent at the best parties in the city. You are naive enough to think that just because you are willing to throw around a little bit of cash you can get what you want. You should know that the hippest parties in the city aren't run by muscle and might, but by intelligence, cultural knowledge, and respect for people of all races and ethnicities. It's too bad you're not in with the scene. Maybe you should try your luck at parties in Long Island and New Jersey instead.

Please stop calling the Maritime and asking when the band is going to play. Rock and roll shows don't follow a strict schedule. Bands play when they are ready. Stop calling the Maritime with that stupid fucking question. Have you ever been to a show before? Wait. Watch the show. Go home and never call the Maritime Hotel about a show ever again.

The Maritime Hotel staff are happy and excited to take everyone's calls about concert concerns. Feel free to contact them about any information. They will be ready to assist you.

Sorry im late to the party on this whole discussion but you whiners are like complete fucking idiots not to mention all the bullshit going down about this show. First of all to the person who said they got to the id table but they couldnt scan the id so they didnt get in is a total fucking liar. They were not scanning id's at all. Actually they claimed to people on the line to not try to use fakes cause they are the best at finding them. Really? Well my friend who is 19 got in with a fake easy as pie.
As for the complainers who did not get in to this free show as well as the Boredoms. Boo Fucking Hoo. Unless you are a complete moron, you know the deal with these places and promoters like Going.com and JellyNYC. They are schmucks and have no idea how to run a show. They are inept at what they do and could not care less if you get in or not. Plus, you know they are going to fill the places with their friends and press yada yada. So if you know that in advance then just get there EARLY!!!!! You want to insure you get to the show of your choice then get there WAY EARLY!!!!. And if you cant get there early for various reasons then do not go or just cut the line and take your chances. To whine about it afterwards is just silly. For Courtney Love, my friend got on the line at 7pm and i joined her at 9pm. She got in line way early and insured us getting in. For the Boredoms, I could not get there that early so when i got to the show at 4 i saw the craziness, cut the line easy and was one of the first to get in. I took my chance and it worked but if i had not gotten in i would not have whined and bitched.
As for the Courtney show, it was a hot sweaty crazy great little mess. Those calling people suckers are probably losers who didnt get in and hating now. The people saying Courtney looked great need to get their eyes checked. Boy that woman has really been ravaged by drugs and alcohol and im not just talking about her voice which was not the best even in her Hole days. She needs to stop with the plastic surgey though. Her face looks like a freaking halloween mask. Damn has that thing been pulled tight. Saying all that, she does not lack for passion though. Some of the new songs are seriously great including the Linda Perry "powerful ballad" as she called it. That is gonna be a huge hit.
That is all

the doorman asian or not should be applauded for refusing to be bribed or tipped. it shows that there are still good door personel in NYC who care more about the event than lining his own pocket. FYI, a doorman is not responsible for security. all you losers who didnt get in are just pissed you got turned away at the door just like all the other places you've tried getting into. as far as courtney love's performance, it was fantastic. my firends and I enjoyed every minute of it. hahaha LOSERS!!!!
Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2007 11:01 AM
"And if you cant get there early for various reasons then do not go or just cut the line and take your chances... For the Boredoms, I could not get there that early so when i got to the show at 4 i saw the craziness, cut the line easy and was one of the first to get in."
So what are you suggesting, that everyone take a tip from you and all cut the line? That's quite the tip.
You should rephrase that: "Hey everyone, I'm a gloating self important jerk off asshole who cuts lines and then posts about how great a tactic it is for me, because it works and I get in to everything by screwing over someone else that waited in line for a long long time like a sucker! Everyone follow my Ahole tip sheet and you too can get in to all the hard to get into shows!
Step1: Just screw everyone, because I am smarter and more important than everyone else on line.
Step 2: Get in like a breeze and then:
Step 3: Tell everyone about it and how they should all do it to!`
Problem is, that you are shooting yourself in the foot by saying this. If you can successfully cut the line and get in then SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT IT then you win.... if however, you cut the line, get in and then gloat like an idiot and tell everyone else that's the way to go because hey you know what, it works, then everyone will indeed start to do that, and you know what? You'll find it won't be that easy for you anymore.
And then you'll be the sucker... and the victim of your own game.
Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2007 4:06 PM
To counter Anon 11:01:
I waited from 7pm. Got in with no problem about four hours later, waited another hour inside and guess what?
THE SHOW SUCKED!
I'm not one of those dicks that is going to say they liked it because it was a hard to get into show and I got in, I'll tell you straight. She blew.
Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2007 4:10 PM
yeah I saw the show too. If you were there and loved it, then that's great. But if you didn't get in, then you really didn't miss anything that stupendous.
Same went for the Boredoms.
No big deal in either case.
Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2007 4:13 PM
Yeah they have free shows every Thursdays and the dickhead door guy acts like suck an asshole, especially when the line is around the corner.
Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2007 4:26 PM
What do you really really expect from Courtney though.... I'm sure unlike a lot of "artists", when she found out about all the people waiting for hours to see here and then not geting in, she was probably thrilled.
And as far as the doorman and the nature of the show and where it took place... she's all about that sort of stuff, so it comes kinda hand in hand with her persona.
Making a lot of hoopla. People getting pissed.
The people outside who got screwed got just as much of the Courtney treatment as the fans who git in and also got screwed.
Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2007 4:37 PM
Ok, what was really the point of making it a free concert? Was it to gain additional promotion from sites like these from the people who either: didn't get in/waited hours to get in/cut in line/bribed the doorman?
Was the point that we are we now supposed to think Courtney is so great because you had to wait in line for hours to legitimately get into her show?
I remember she had a Summerstage show scheduled a couple of years ago that was suddenly cancelled after poor ticket sales.
