Please, please people, before you consider going to this show, remember how much you hate the Fiery Furnaces. There is also a water taxi beach in LIC that has sand, cold beverages, and nice picnic tables that are perfect for conversation amongst friends and potential enemies.
Prospect park is also a great place to lay out and enjoy some sun on a summers day.
Have you been to the Astoria Beer Garden yet? Again, good foreign beer and the perfect place for networking with potential clients over kielbasa.

Posted by cdice | July 25, 2007 11:23 AM

"the Astoria Beer Garden"

It's called Bohemian Hall, get the name right.

Damn, Astoria, why do you always gotta be like that? That's why you've never emerged as a reasonable alternative to Brooklyn.
You gots to chill.

Posted by nated | July 25, 2007 11:38 AM

But nated, I wanna hit on hipster chicks.

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2007 11:39 AM

Save that for the Pool this and every sunday afternoon.

Oh I'm sorry, Astoria, I meant to say JellyNYC, Helio, and Going.com present the PoOL parties at McCarren Park.

I don't remember hating Fiery Furnaces at all. I remember liking them. A lot.

I say we kick nated's ass, so let's go to this show and beat the crap out of every male attending to make sure we get him.

who cares? Tupac is alive.

Bring it, Astoria.
Me and the Greenpoint Polish gangs will take on you guys and the Greek gangs in an interborough battle.
Regardless of which side Alex Kapranos takes, this should be an interesting fight.

The winning borough gets to keep the G train.

yeah fiery furnaces are good I like them, but they definitely suck live. like real bad. ive seen it more than once.

Long ago and not so far away, my first NYC apartment was a few blocks from Socrates Sculpture Park. It wasn't a park then, just a garbage lot - but my roommate and I would often wander down there at night, and squeeze around the chain link fence, and hang out among the debris and detritus on the shores of the East River. The abandonded junk and machinery in the lot sort of served as art pieces. And the sculptor Mark di Suvero had already placed a few of his gigantic steel pieces on a neighboring lot. Di Suvero's workspace was (and perhaps still is) nearby and we could often see him and his assistants working late at night, illuminated by the sparks of their welding guns. I used to think that this junk-strewn lot would make for a neat park, and that perhaps, someday, an as-yet-to-be-formed rock band would play there. It seems that day has arrived.

okay.. first things first.

being an LIC resident, i can tell you that the water taxi beach is a hellhole, complete with $10 beers and guids & real estate agents abound.

also, that beer garden sucks shit.

the fiery furnaces are just great live, but that last northsix show displayed the least of their greatness. i fear their best days are behind them.

And yet the Maxwell's show from a few weeks ago completely ripped. The new material is excellent. This should be quite a good show.

I like their new album. Never seen them live, but I've heard reports - do they still do that thing of playing speeded-up garage rock re-interpretations of their songs and never pausing in between tunes?..

Polish gangs? Don't make me laugh. We'll call in some favors from our bros in the Queensbridge Houses.

"That's why you've never emerged as a reasonable alternative to Brooklyn."

It's still better than Ohio, Montana or wherever you came from. I can't stand transplants calling themselves Brooklynites and putting down other places.

Socrates Park is a nice place for a show. The sound sucks but the atmosphere is great. And don't worry about it getting crowded: once hipsters find out how far it is, they won't go.

i really like the furnaces, and i read nated's comment in this light: every time i am at furnaces show, it seems like a lot of people start talking and then leave because it takes a little more attention than they had. so, if you're really not a stamina kind of person, why not just go drink beer instead of talking through the show?

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2007 8:50 PM

this is gonna be just like the warriors....

btw what time do these movies actually start?

Posted by nyc noise fan | July 26, 2007 11:37 AM

Nick Knuckles is right - anyone been to the beer garden lately?

It sucks, man, it really sucks.

It's gone Frat-tastic. Yes, I capitalised that on purpose. Wasn't always like that, even about 3 or 4 years ago, it wasn't this hellish.

Example: The last time I was there (that'd be the friday before Memorial day) as the afternoon turned evening, I watched as quite a few 'men' in backwards ball caps chug beer out of pitchers, cheered on by the chanting of "GO! GO! GO!" by their pals, while the accompanying members of the fairer sex rolled their eyes and continued to text message.

STUPIDEST ARGUMENT EVER, HIPSTER FUCKS.

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2007 9:11 PM

what time do you think the furnaces go on? I know the site says 4pm, but is that really the truth?

Posted by Anonymous | August 21, 2007 11:38 AM

Well, there are no opening acts that we know of... They may well go on around 4 or 4:30.

Posted by Anonymous | August 21, 2007 8:57 PM

I'm gonna karate chop all you peoples!
hahaha... John Meyer!

Posted by hii-ya | August 22, 2007 10:53 AM

just saw mary timony hanging out in LIC... maybe a surprise opener? or just a fiery furnaces fan. or a fan of outdoor sculpture.
