DOWNLOAD: Dan Deacon - When I Was Taller (MP3)
DOWNLOAD: Girl Talk - Bounce That (MP3)

Dan Deacon likes to play in the crowd - not on the stage, but at ground level where he can really get the party started. It makes sense, and works really well at small, sweaty venues, but as those who were at Dan's recent McCarren Pool show in Brooklyn know - Dan doesn't care how big the venue is - his show is his show, and that's not always a good thing for those in the back. Well, at the sold out Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago this past weekend (July 13-15, 2007).....

watching Dan Deacon @ Pitchfork Festival 2007
Dan Deacon show at Pitchfork Festival

Stage B where Dan Deacon was performing. He was actually set up down on the pavement with the audience (and photographers were on the stage). At least a couple of people decided to climb the trees to get a peek of what was going on. Eventually you could see bodies floating over the audience up near the stage...no not levitating, body surfing! [beardenb]
And then....
In its third year at the West Side's Union Park, the Pitchfork Music Festival, a weekendlong celebration of the cutting edge in indie rock, hip-hop and electronic dance music, firmly established itself as a model for how a great urban music fest should be run.

Over the weekend, a total of 47,000 fans, many from across the country, enjoyed more than four dozen challenging and rewarding performances in a sublime setting with generally excellent sound and an inspiring communal vibe. (Although the park could accommodate more, promoters sold out to preset capacities of 17,000 per day Saturday and Sunday and 13,000 Friday night to ensure a comfortable experience.)

fire marshallAmong the attendees: 250 journalists who came from as far as New York, Los Angeles and London to catch a first glimpse of artists pegged as "next big things" by the influential Chicago-based Webzine, PitchforkMedia.com. In fact, the greatest testament to the site's power in breaking new acts was the cause of the fest's biggest glitches: Dan Deacon, an electronic performer from Baltimore, and Girl Talk, a k a DJ Gregg Gillis, drew massive crowds that swamped the smaller third stage, exceeding capacity and forcing the Chicago Fire Department to cut those performances short.... [Chicago Sun Times]

In sadder, but related news, it looks like we lost one of our own due to head explosion over the weekend too. More photos of Dan's packed set by Gaper's Block below....

did anyone get any pictures of girl talk and grizzly bear performing together? Was so amazing. the entire crowd sang along and I think deerhunter guy was dancing on stage too

That Sun Times article is unreal.

From the author saying Pitchfork's fest could somehow morph into "legendary '60s fests like Monterey Pop" next year (WTF?), to the just amazing teenage reviews of the festival at the bottom, with some sounding like they're auditioning for P4K and one 17-year-old offering the summation, "It's possible that there has never been a more intolerant and close-minded audience, and I feel physically racked with sorrow."

"no not levitating, body surfing!"

no kidding?

Lots of highlights Saturday. The weather was gorgeous, and most of the bands played really well despite major technical problems. Full review posted here:

Sunday review on its way.

god, what is the appeal of girl talk? just another crappy dj with a mac

how was gza? i read here he did liquid swords straight through

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2007 1:14 PM

i was there, fyi dan deacon was on his last song when that happened, "silence like the wind overwhelms me"? i think thats the title. otherwise his set was just like at brooklyn last week except this time it was "sears tower is a pyrimid". we didnt even know what happened, it just ended and they said we are taking a 20 minute break. the crowd there was just too much, before they started the mc guy was telling people to move back because they were afraid the stage would collapse.

look at all those white people!

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2007 1:27 PM

Is Pitchfork saying that Dan Deacon's set was overcrowded because he's en fuego right now? I would think it's really because Mastodon was on the main stage at the time. Especially since Dan's shows are only good for like 50 people.

Posted by one of them | July 16, 2007 1:30 PM

he's not a dj, fucktard

duh

I was there for Dan Deacon and it was ridiculously crowded with almost no room to dance/jump/clap/whatever. Even though Dan was on his last song it was a downer that the set got cut off short. Also the sound was pretty bad at that stage which only made the situation worse.

one of them - Clipse was actually on one of the main stages while Dan Deacon was performing not Mastodon.

i was backstage and got a couple of shots of the grizzly bear guy's backs, but i don't know if they'll be put up (i was photographing for pitchfork and their festival coverage goes up on tuesday). most of the deerhunter were on stage dancing as well. it was ridiculous, security were kind of freaking out and not sure how to handle it.

That last pic reminds me of the crowd on 10th St. during Scissor Sisters @ last year's Siren Festival: FUN but also NERVOUS.

Posted by b.LOUD | July 16, 2007 2:24 PM

b.LOUD:

yeah the crowd was huge. even deacon seemed surprised about the reaction he got. it seems like no one is more shocked by his popularity than him

Posted by jason | July 16, 2007 2:55 PM

davydka--

how is he not a dj? he sits at a mac, "samples" songs to make "mashups"...the fact that the mashup gimmick is sitll attracted audiences is amazing. he doesnt do shit but blend different songs that arent his...trust me, he wouldnt be shit if hipster girls didnt think he was hot.

you may be right though...he probably isnt a dj cause who knows if this no talent hack even knows how spin vinyl

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2007 3:21 PM

hater...whoa...extreme jealously

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2007 3:29 PM

Yeah it's really fun and makes for a great dance party, no need to hate on him.

They should have just made all those not dancing leave when girl talk was playing. Would have been a much better crowd. Both of them are better to see at small venues when everyone is there really wants to be there.

Posted by Tony | July 16, 2007 3:35 PM

not a hater, just said i dont see the appeal and have yet to recieve an answer as to what makes him good/worth checking out

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2007 3:57 PM

Sheesh, I'm just glad I was at Deacon's Merc Lounge show a month or so back, to be able to actually SEE him...

Posted by Anonymous | July 16, 2007 5:17 PM

gregg gillis doesn't give a fuck about your ineptitude. you haven't tried to understand where he's coming from, how he composes his music, or what technology he uses. do you want to have it explained to you on a web site? are you listening? this is a thoughtful and intelligent person who has spoken eloquently about his methods. it's not as though we don't all trash things that we know nothing about at times, but i'd really like to encourage you to give this guy a little more credit, esp. given the circumstances of your non-knowledge.
using samples to create new songs doesn't exclude what he does from the realm of art. and art isn't a dirty word, but we give each other such a fucking hard time about it. what's your criteria? do you give a fuck about music, or is it just the message board you're living for?

Posted by kate h | July 16, 2007 6:06 PM

I love how much everyone hates each other on these things. But there is good news and it's this: my long lost cousin who lives 20 miles away found me on the Brooklyn Vegan and now we're going to start hanging out now!!

kate h, thank you for the very descriptive explanation of his music. i know you and your girls probably have a blast listening to girls just wanna have fun over the new lil jon beat but im askin what he does that makes him so talented. i am just asking what is so exciting about watching a guy remix music on a computer.

girl talk:

everyone dances. everyone sweats. it's fun as fuck. he always plays new exclusive material. no one makes music that sounds like his. the compositions are complicated, challenging, and enjoyable at the same time. he's a pioneer in the field in the plunderphonics. he interacts with his audience almost more than any other band i've ever seen. he stage dove twice on saturday, over a gap between the stage and audience that was 5+ feet in length. he hung around after his set and talked to every single person who wanted to talk to him.

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2007 2:34 AM

Girl Talk: Silly pablum.

"Plunderphonics"? Holy jesus, you idiots are astonishing. This is shite-art of the lowest order. Mashups, my god. What the fuck is in the water lately? You fucking twats.

The best: "He stage dove twice on saturday."

OH SHIT, F'REAL DEWD? WHAT AN ARTIST! OMFG, he PLUNDERS rad samplez and, like, makes entirely symphonies out of them and you can DANCE to it all nyte?? -- A PIONEER!!

A sham.

Posted by ?!? | July 17, 2007 8:27 AM

hahaha still yet to get a good answer...of course girl talk can jump off stage and run through the crowd...because dj itunes aka girl talk just has to let the mp3 play. its kind of hard to do that with a drumset.... also, he doesnt make music, he plays it. if clicking on the mouse and typing on a laptop is making cutting edge music then me posting this shit right now is a song.

if you want to say his parties are fun thats cool, you can even say he plays good party music. but to act like this guy is a musician or doing anything that will have a name for him in a year or two is ridiculous

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2007 9:42 AM

Deacon plays this Saturday with Spank Rock in a small Bmore art space, the fire marshalls should have fun there.

it's interesting to note that girl talk's latest album appeared in the best album of the year lists for many major publications (rolling stone, blender, pitchfork... just to name a few). i'm not saying you should give a fuck about any of those magazines, but no one treated it as a DJ mix, everyone treated it as new music. it's one of the only non-hiphop sample-based albums to ever do this.

whether you like or not, he's really forcing people to think about "original" music in new ways.

he's gone on in countless interviews to explain that he performs live on a program called audiomulch. he cues up every individual sample by hand in real done. he's gone on video and even shown this process. it's a live version of what he puts down on record. i don't understand how/why you would expect anything more from him. that's what the music is. the show is fun and he's actually playing live plunderphonics.

BTW, the term plunderphonics was coined in the 70's by the composer John Oswald to describe this type of music. you should look into it. there are many artists who fall into this category and perform live plunderphonics on laptops and other equipment.

everyone said "no will care about girl talk in a year" last summer. he's huger than ever, and the shows are getting more crazy. he's still innovating in the field of mash ups. night ripper still rules. everyone still jams it at parties.

get over it.

also, he's the first sampling guy to ever have an album on the finalists for the shortlist music awards.

he's bringing a very rock and roll element to laptop music as well.

So despite the overcrowded Pitchfork performance on Saturday, Dan Deacon went on to play two more shows in Chicago that weekend that were incredible. The first was Saturday night at the Reversible Eye Gallery where it was so crowded and crazy that the cement floor actually collapsed! He quit playing early because people were throwing water around and he said he was being electrocuted. Dan Deacon is a drama queen. He then played Sunday night at Boris Karlofft, a loft space in the West Loop. Deerhunter also played. It was a fucking amazing night. An amazing weekend really. Who would have thought that Dan Deacon could illicit that kind of response from a crowd? I haven't seen crowd surfing since I was in high school. Needless to say, his shows are great and seeing him 3 times in the course of 24 hours more than filled my Dan Deacon fix for a long time to come. The bruises on the tops of my feet need to heal.

"he's bringing a very rock and roll element to laptop music as well."

laptop music and girl talk is so last year...its all about blackberry music, composed entirely from sound effects from brick breaker and incoming messages on a smartphone. very interesting stuff seeing how a musican works with a smaller qwerty keypad

Posted by Anonymous | July 18, 2007 5:52 PM

pretty funny that exactly a year later, Girl Talk is still big, playing at All Points West among other things, and just released a new album despite the
