Gypsy Madonna

Eugene Hutz and Sergey Ryabtsev from Gypsy Punk band GOGOL BORDELLO have confirmed that they have accepted an invitation from Madonna to guest on stage with her during her headline set at the Live Earth event this Saturday 7th July 2007 at Wembley Stadium in London.
Continued below...

The initiative behind Live Earth, to inspire its global audience to make lasting changes in their lives and spur action by corporations and governments to turn the tide on Global Warming, is supported by Gogol Bordello.

Gogol Bordello had planned to perform at Live Earth in addition to performing their scheduled set at the T In The Park Festival in Balado, by Kinross, Scotland, also happening on Saturday. Due to timings of their performance at T In The Park, and recent events, it was not possible to do both in one day, as a result Gogol Bordello have had to cancel their set at T In The Park, and apologise to their Scottish fans. With one member of Gogol Bordello, Elizabeth Sun, hailing from Scotland, they value their support.

Gogol Bordello are planning to make up for any disappointment that their fans may feel following this cancellation.

Following Live Earth, Eugene and Sergey will rejoin the rest of Gogol Bordello in Dublin, Eire, to perform at the Oxegen Festival on Sunday 8th July. The band will return to the US to play a string of dates including two headlining shows at Irving Plaza on Friday 20th July and Saturday 21st July. In addition to the Scottish show to be announced, Gogol Bordello perform at the Beautiful Days Festival on 18th August, the Reading & Leeds Festivals on Friday 24th & Saturday 25th August respectively, with a full US tour for later in the year to be announced next week.

So what is the carbon footprint of flying a big band and all their equipment back and forth to Europe as the tour schedule above suggests? Who does the planet need saving from? Enjoy your touring now, because after Peak Oil your career will be re-localized.

People who are concerned with environmental impact state that flying in a plane is the number one most destructive thing that anyone can do to the environment. It rips holes in the atmosphere and releases so much pollution. There is no such thing as an environmentally conscious event that involves airplanes. Of course, raising awareness is a big deal, and can sometimes be used to justify the means. I'm just saying, that you can't walk the talk if you fly.

But now we know what sound Madonna's going for on her next album.

As long as they are planning to offset (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_offset), I don't see a huge problem with them flying to raise awareness. Also as far as flying "equipment," backline drums and amps will be provided for them...it's a matter of bringing their actual instruments - guitars, horns etc.

Madonna is the one you should be criticizing...check out the news on her interesting investments....

Hill's father was a traveling preacher and went town to town, bringing his family with him. Until she was about ten years old, Hill lived in a 32-foot camper with her father, mother and two younger brothers. While traveling with her family, Hill would often explore rivers by campgrounds.[1] When Hill was six years old, she and her family were taking a hike one day and a butterfly landed on her finger and stayed with her the entire time. From that day on, her nickname became "Butterfly."[1]
