Man @ Man Man @ McCarren Pool on Sunday
Illinois, Dengue Fever, What Cheer Brigade, and Man Man played the free show at McCarren Pool in Brooklyn on Sunday...
Man Man @ McCarren Pool - July 1, 2007 (CRED)

In a rare move by me these days, I actually left NYC to be in the wilderness this weekend - SO, I wasn't there. To learn more about what I missed, I have since scoured through countless photosets created by those who WERE in attendance. I have learned that - it was sunny out, people were playing dodgeball and slip 'n slide, there were more people in the audience than the first week's show, bands played, people were having fun, but most of all I learned......that there was one very special dude that was definitely THERE....

Posted by grzond | July 2, 2007 1:14 PM
wow. it didn't feel that crowded.
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2007 1:17 PM
It really wasn't as crowded as it looks here...That big guy was funny. I saw him flash his genitals at some poor girl...glad you didn't find that photo.
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2007 1:18 PM
this was a historic show for brooklyn. simply amazing. all bands were great. dan deacon and Ocotpus Project next week? that's just crazy.
it was definitely crowded, but scary isn't a word I would use to describe it...more like a great party with all of your best friends.
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2007 1:19 PM
that guy was pretty amazing
Posted by whatever | July 2, 2007 1:20 PM
all for man man? oh right it was free, but still , nice one man man! I never knew!
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2007 1:20 PM
man (man) this bands sucks. listen to captain beefheart.
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2007 1:21 PM
and he didn't flash his balls, they inadvertently fell out of his daisy dukes after getting off the slip and slide.

Dengue Fever. Couldn't stand their music long enough to wait for Man Man. Did anyone else feel that way?
Posted by dude | July 2, 2007 1:31 PM
i thought both of the first two bands were terrible. but i waited for MANMAN
Posted by whatever | July 2, 2007 1:33 PM
That G-string ended up on Honus Honus's keyboard.
Definitely looks more croweded in those pics than it actually was.
Great show. Jelly NYC should be proud.

historic?
Posted by Otm Shank | July 2, 2007 1:36 PM
i would say that by the end of the day, the space was just as crowded as those photos indicate
Posted by whatever | July 2, 2007 1:38 PM
Geez, BV, couldn't you warn us that the first photo after the jump is NSFD (not safe for digestion)?
Posted by queens cannibal | July 2, 2007 1:42 PM
long line to get into venue but moved quickly. last week the line was for bag checks, not sure why everyone had to wait this week.
however, Brooklyn Brewery desperately needs to add more locations inside. i waited about 20 - 25 min to get my drink ticket and then my beer.
Posted by jkov | July 2, 2007 1:42 PM
Funny, no one's making any comments about how fat this guy is. I guess that only applies to females getting on stage with Franz Ferdinand.
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2007 1:43 PM
Does anyone know who's playing the pool party on the 22nd?
Posted by er | July 2, 2007 1:46 PM
Man Man was great and it was definitely a perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon. I actually didn't think it was that crowded, but I can only imagine how TVOTR will be!
Damn, how could I have missed that big guy? I was standing more to the side but was right up at the front as well!
Dengue Fever is kind of a love it or hate it band, maybe kind of like Deerhoof...so I not at all suprised if many people were put off by their music.
Posted by Eric | July 2, 2007 1:46 PM
anon 1:21, um what? last time I checked I couldn't go see the captain for free in my nieghborhood, even if you were to say Man Man were just a rip off of beefheart (I would dispute that, more Tom Waits to my ears, but mixing up the tempo more) isn't it just cool that everyone's getting down beefheart style and having a good time after all these years... what's to be pissy about?
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2007 1:48 PM
Hey..isn't that Barry Ditto..Beth's brother?
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2007 1:49 PM
Geez pat duffy. way to worm your way into as many photos as possible.
Posted by You know who | July 2, 2007 1:51 PM
it's totally fine for men to be fat ans gross.
come on we all know that.
and i should have to see them with their shirts off
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2007 2:00 PM
I would hate to go on the slip-n-slide after he did. EWWWWWWWW!
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2007 2:01 PM
Anon 1:48pm. Did you really just write the word "um?" I'm not pissy, I just stayed home because the band is a talentless, Captain Beefheart rip-off that for some reason passes as good music in Williamsburg.
Posted by anon 1:21 | July 2, 2007 2:11 PM
The drummer from Man Man is hot! Thanks for the pic!

Posted by Kap | July 2, 2007 2:31 PM
What a great time yesterday was. Man Man was fantastic as always. I'm so glad you got pictures of the fat guy, the dude was a riot.
Posted by mp77 | July 2, 2007 2:46 PM
This was an amazing afternoon - Man Man killed it. It wasnt all that crowded at all..there were a ton of people in the pool but plenty of room to move around except for way upfront.
That guy is a total asshole. Very very fat too.
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2007 2:51 PM
It looks like the pool parties have officially become played out. Look at all those people! I liked them must better last year when they were our neighborhood secret.

It looks so crowded! Is it safe to assume the McCarren Park Pool Party cat is out of the bag and these are officially played out? It was so awesome last summer when the pool parties were our neighborhood secret. Can we give all the Manhattanites wandering around looking lost and out of place the wrong directions when they ask us where the Pool Parties are?

I thought the sound wasnt very good for all the bands. Illinois, who i have seen 2x were great and my favorite, although the vocals were way more loud then the instruments. Dengue Fever were impressive, but i dont really like the Adult contemporary/world music thing. Man man has great energy, but need to spread out a bit. They looked very lumped together and at times reminded me of 5 Bobby Bradys...Really great day

anyone have any insight into the rumors that Genius/GZA will be at the pool party on the 22nd? performing "liquid swords"
Posted by jkov | July 2, 2007 3:28 PM
"um:" a colloquialism of message boards implying a moment of thought, confusion, or simply a pause. Sorry that you have no imagination for approximating speech and gesture in written text. Message Boards: A casual online discussion forum. I.E. not a master's thesis.
If lacking in knowledge of the parlance of the medium you are communicating in, you have, nonetheless, proven yourself more pretentious than even me (no easy feat) so you should feel proud of that.
If you don't like the band, and did not go to the show, why oh why are you posting on a board about the show, except perhaps to prove how much smarter you are than all those "lowly hipsters".
Well I'm glad I didn't spend my sunday at home hating the world, I had a great time with fun music, even saw Polyphonic Spree afterwards at Warsaw, which I was skeptical about, but wound up being a great show.

I had your back up until you mentioned Polyphonic Spree.... (:

that big guy is amazing, i have been to four man man shows and he has been at every single one. i've heard that he follows them around on their tours and sees every show? i don't know if he really goes to all of them, but he's incredibly entertaining
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2007 4:25 PM
The Polyphonic Spree is like seeing a Broadway musical, except there is no second or third act.
Thanks for clarifying the word "um." I couldn't even imagine what it meant as I am new to these "message boards." I usually only read PHD dissertations, square bound with gold leaf stamping. That's actuallyu what I was doing instead of seeing two terrible shows in Greenpoint, or hating the world.

Kittenwhiskers are you retarded? This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever read. It cannot be a neighborhood secret when it has been advertised all over the city for the last two years. You should loosen your headband because it is clearly cutting off the circulation to your brain.

Man Man are a fun band. Nothing amazing and like someone said above i dont get the Beefheart/Waits connection either. I mean the singer sounds a little like Waits and their eclectic instrumentation is like Waits and a little like Beefheart but they are missing crucial elements that I think would justify this connection. Beefheart and Waits play music with roots solidly based in The Blues. I do not hear this at all in Man Man.
That being said, i agree with others that the show was not crowded at all. Those pictures were of the crowd right up front and not a good reprsesentation of the rest of the crowd.
And ahhh the fat guy. Well let me say that yes he is just as disgusting as Beth Ditto and the girls who jumped on stage at Franz Ferdinand. Equal Opportunity. And yeah those panties ended up on the keyboards and if anyone was there you might remember that the guy wouldnt even use his hands to touch them but instead used a stick to move the panties away from the keyboard and grimaced while doing it. If it is true that he follows them around to their shows then i feel bad for the group. Hahaha they create a band with some buzz and instead of hot chicks following them around they have some slovenly gross dude.
People it would be great to have more nudity at Mccarren but HOT GIRLS!!!! NOT GUYS LIKE THIS.
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2007 4:49 PM
I don't think I have ever read a review of this band where Tom Waits and Captain Beefheart weren't mentioned.
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2007 4:53 PM
People love to compare bands and Man Man gets the Beefheart/Tom Waits thing all the time. Is Tom Waits also a Beefheart rip off? Does it kill Beefheart fans every time his music is mentioned as an influence for a ton of seemingly unrelated bands since his records came out? Is Beefheart a Howlin' Wolf rip off? If young Man Man fans didn't know who Beefheart was do they know now? Would anyone who knew Beefheart ever mistake a Man Man song for one of his? Glad there are so many ideas in music to change how we look at things. Glad for free shows on nice days.

"Dude, Everyone here thinks I'm awesome" says our large and in charge friend. Look theres Kelly Osbourne!!!
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2007 6:13 PM
that guy's revolting. he rubbed his gigantic hairy sweaty self all over my friend at the spiegel tent show last year. she still turns green at the very mention of him. it's all fun and games until he's standing three feet from you.
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2007 6:35 PM
The big guy's alright in my book. As for the Tom Waits comparisons, maybe there wouldn't be so many if Man Man didn't PLAY TOM WAITS as they took the stage. Obvs they would acknowledge him as an influence, and frankly I'm just glad enough people still remember who Beefheart is to bandy his name about so freely.
My only complaint about the McPool shows: Why the hell do they let so many photographers on stage? Every single picture I took has at least one of those bored-looking fucks in it. Down with rock photographers who don't know how to rock!!!

Posted by the hanger-on | July 2, 2007 7:25 PM
My friend told me yesterday, a few minutes after Man Man started playing, that the group sounded like Danny Elfman's music. Tom Waits and Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band comparisons are there, obviously, but has anyone noticed this other connection before?
Posted by the hanger-on | July 2, 2007 7:30 PM
man man was so f. good! and the whole Dengue Fever thing was very surreal too.
We took some photos...

Watching a ball stick out of that guy's underwear while eating my hamburguer was way too unpleasant.
Posted by etty | July 2, 2007 7:33 PM
The Captain Beefheart/Tom Waits comparisons come for the eclectic instrumenation that Man Man uses. Man Man does sound very much like '80s Tom Waits (Swordfishtrombones, Rain Dogs, Franks Wild Years) in many ways. It's all good!
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2007 7:40 PM

Serves you right for eating a hamburger!

The whole show was great from start to finish...even the fat dude. Man Man was incredible. Dengue Fever were fucking cool too. Anything not played by white dudes doesn't automatically make it world music. Who gives a shit anyway if it's as good as they were.
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2007 8:33 PM
"The Captain Beefheart/Tom Waits comparisons come for the eclectic instrumenation that Man Man uses"
Way to repeat exactly what someone else said hours ago. People read the fucking comments before making yours so you dont look like an idiot parrot
"Can anyone confirm the BAND OF HORSES comment-- playing the pool on 7-22....please tell me before i spend money on that Hiro show...much thanks!"
Band of Horses is playing McCarren on 7/22. Do not know who else is joining them.
"My only complaint about the McPool shows: Why the hell do they let so many photographers on stage? "
OMG so fucking right. I was thinking the same thng yesterday. What the fuck is up with that. A band surrounded on the stage by shitty photogs who work for no name weblogs(no offense to you BV.) It was wayyyyy too many to be on stage. When photogs are actually getting in the way of the band you know it has gotten out of hand.
"I'm just glad enough people still remember who Beefheart is to bandy his name about so freely."
Sadly I imagine that 1/4 of the people on here who made mention actually know this music. The rest are just repeating what they have read or heard from others. And unfortunately most of the young kids who listen to Man Man probably have no idea either. Now pLease stop with the aforementioned Beefheart/Waits comparisons. While Man Man is disposable fun you really demean the brilliance of both Beefheart and Waits by comparing Man Man to them
And if you liked the Fat Guy you are a shithead moron just like him. I bet you would not have him join you at your dinner table.
Posted by Anonymous | July 2, 2007 8:43 PM
Actually i wish someone had moved the camera in some of those pictures to the left of the fat guy. There was a really cute asian girl with bright blonde/yellow hair next to him in the front. I felt bad for her.
But her and this other totally drunk girl sucking on a lollipop and dancing with her gay guy friend=totally yummy

it's so fucking disgusting that in a musical and cultural scene built on not fitting in people come on this board and MAKE FUN OF SOMEONE WHO DOESN'T FIT IN. isn't this ALTERNATIVE culture? mainstream culture considers almost every single person in that crowd to be somehow a misfit, myself included, everyone with their weird haircuts and tight jeans and same-sex partners and piercings and tattoos, and instead of embracing darren for having the courage to be himself and not be silenced by our culture's expectations for exactly how you should look and act, people BEHIND THE CURTAIN OF ANONYMITY write nasty comments about how he's FAT? who THE FUCK are you?
furthermore, and this is beside the point, darren is at every single man man concert in and around new york BECAUSE HE LOVES THEIR MUSIC and because he feels comfortable being himself with that band on stage. it's not a pose or an attempt to look cool, it's just a dude fucking being himself in one of the few places he feels comfortable doing that. IF HE'S BOTHERING YOU, JUST WALK THE FUCK AWAY and enjoy the show in your own way. he was three rows in front of me seeing The Books at webster hall and i didn't even notice he was there until everyone started filing out because he didn't make a peep. how could you go to a free outdoor summer show where the band intermittently jumps around on stage and spits and screams like monkeys and be surprised that there's a dude there who's sweaty and pounding his chest and yelling?
i think we should thank fucking god that there's a person who, in a social climate where one of the worst crimes is to be fat, can just say fuck it and be himself. if i was confident enough to walk around outside with my shirt off then i would, and i envy darren for being able to do it despite you motherfucking trolls.

" instead of embracing darren for having the courage to be himself and not be silenced by our culture's expectations for exactly how you should look and act, people BEHIND THE CURTAIN OF ANONYMITY write nasty comments about how he's FAT? who THE FUCK are you?"
I dont know who you are but i would have no problem calling him a fat piece of shit to his face so shut the fuck up moron
"it's just a dude fucking being himself in one of the few places he feels comfortable doing that. IF HE'S BOTHERING YOU, JUST WALK THE FUCK AWAY and enjoy the show in your own way"
Unfortunately it was stated above that the guy reeks of B.O. cause he probably does not shower much. Well my fucked up friend then he is not just being himself but causing discomfort for others who are at the show as well and who might want to be in the pit and dance and dont want to walk away. And as you recall from another post on here if you read them, Darren fattie threw his nasty panties he was wearing up on the stage which made the singer cringe when he removed them with a stick. So he is in fact disturbing even the band he claims to love so much.
Furthermore if you are in fact the guy in the white shirt as recall you were being a crazed asshole in the front row continually trying to jump over the barrier onto the stage and annoying both security(not that they dont deserve to be annoyed) and others around you. Unfortunately you cant just be yourself, you have to have an affect on other people.

because i bet that you, anonymous (ooh, is that your real name?), after jumping around on a hot day and sweating and probably rubbing around on people and hitting them and their sweat, smelled JUST FANTASTIC. how dare he cause anyone else discomfort! how dare he go to the show of a band he loves when HE'S FAT and OTHER PEOPLE MIGHT NOT LIKE HIM! you're right, he's a COMPLETE AND UTTER ASSHOLE.

Since we're critiquing fashion. Is anyone disturbed by the large amount cut off jean shorts people seem to be wearing at the pool parties?
Posted by Anonymous | July 4, 2007 12:01 PM
anon 12:01, you wear frayed cargo shorts, don't you? (full disclosure: I was wearing cutoff jean shorts at this show)
ALSO, it really is ridiculous to see all these people mocking "darren" for being fat, when this "culture" or whatever you want to call it is supposed to be about being outside the mainstream, defying conventions, etc. Since it's really hip right now to be manorexic, this darren guy is a badass for having the balls to walk around with his gut hanging out.
FURTHER, I sincerely doubt that it was actually him making those posts in ALL CAPS up above. I could be wrong, but it's probably just another bored moron trying to somehow inject excitement into his life.
