MENOMENA played Citysol (Seaport) & Pitchfork ++ OXFORD COLLAPSE playing McCarren Pool

Menomena @ South Street Seaport, NYC- July 13, 2007 (CRED)

One obvious limitation we faced when booking the Citysol show was that we couldn't have any bands that were already locked in to play the Pitchfork Festival happening the same weekiend in Chicago. It meant we couldn't get local favorites like Professor Murder and Oxford Collapse on the bill, and though Gza really wanted to perform Liquid Swords while overlooking the East River, he just couldn't get out of his prior obligation (I kid). One band sort of did play both though - that's because the South Street Seaport portion of Citysol was Friday night and Menomena weren't playing the Pitchfork Fest until Sunday.
Menomena @ Pitchfork Festival 2007, Chicago - July 15, 2007 (CRED)

Though I was running around a lot, what I heard of Menomena at the Seaport sounded great. I obviously wasn't at Pitchfork, but Metromix says Menomena's set there was "significantly weakened by poor sound". Also on Pitchfork - The Daily Heave says that "Professor Murder really did try, but sadly was stuck on the third stage of doom", and Rachel reports that she likes Oxford Collapse "more than mastadons but they stuck the oxford collapse in the weird little fenced off corner stage area and I was NOT going back there.".......
Oxford Collapse are playing McCarren Pool this Sunday (7/22) with Annuals and Band of Horses.

Jeez... Siren is going to wipe me out and I'll probably be comatose on Sunday, but that lineup is just too good to miss.

Menomena was great as usual, and Beat The Devil was a real nice suprise! All in all it was a beautiful night and a great crowd, and the rain held out too.

Melanoma looks really tired in the Sunday picture, it must have been a long weekend.

Aww, thanks for the shout out BV! Yeah, I disagree with Metromix, Menomena was pretty rad. Granted though the whole festival was having sound problems, so maybe I was use to it at that point.

Menomena put on a good show at pitchfork, there were some sound issues, but nothing too bad once it got going, unlike the Cat Power show which was so off I had to leave... also her tough girl bar band swagger she was pulling over some dreadful covers, what the hell happened, last time I saw her she had confidence, and it was still beautiful and very cat power... this was just wierd, and terrible. And then Girl Talk was so crowded and the sound so weak, anywhere behind the sound tent it was hard to feel like you were at a concert, i felt like my neighbors were having a dance party, but I didn't know them so I couldn't invite myself over..... still it was fun

I really don't understand the griping about the third stage. The Prof. Murder set was really fun. Menomena didn't sound so good from the distance, but then again that's probably because I don't like them very much (/haven't really given them a chance because they have the worst band name ever).
(De La, Yoko, Deerhunter were the bestest).

Menomena played like pros @ the Seaport and definitely won some new fans with a tight set.
The big surprise was certainly Beat the Devil. I had never seen them live or even heard that much about them but imo they killed, even though it was the wrong venue for them.

YES! I'm so psyched that Oxford Collapse was added to the Band of Horses show.

I thought Cat Power & Dirty Delta Blues were pretty great at Pitchfork...That band is super tight & rocking in a total old school way. The covers were great too ..maybe not for the obviously young crowd there who's record collection doesn't go back further than the first Shins CD..... She's doing what she does who is anyone to say what is or not "Cat Power" except for her ? ..she's not who she was 10 years ago..this is the music she gew up with and it took her a long time to get to a point where she could do it confidently...if you dont like it , there are a ton of fragile females out there to look towards..
Overall the sound at the festival was pretty embarrassing though Here's a thought Pitchfork....charge a few extra bucks & get a better PA...I'm sure everyone wouldnt mind... $20 a day seems like a super bargain..until you can actually hear anyone.

sound throughout p'fork was horrid. odd, since the venue was identical and last year's sound was great. world's quietest sonic youth show ever.
the third stage featured the brunt of the interesting bands (prof murder, cool kids, klaxons, dan deacon, etc.), but most of these acts have already outgrown the space. it got most unpleasant during girl talk.

Menomena didn't do it for me on Friday at the Seaport. I like their new album but live didn't keep up much for me.

the menomena set at the seaport was radass x 100.

Couldn't disagree more with Eduardo. They killed live.

Yeah, sorry Eduardo, but you're wrong on this one...

I thought Menomena were merely OK. Good show, but nothing to write home about.

downplaying someone else's opinion by implying that your record collection is bigger than thiers is the hipster version of getting a humvee.

Pitchfork sounded great from Virginia.

Menomena were pretty amazing at the seaport show.
Definitely a great band to see live!

I think people are overplaying the sound issue at Pitchfork a bit too much. It was definitely too quiet for Sonic Youth on the Friday and was an ongoing problem on the third stage all weekend but the main two stages seemed fine for most of what I saw on Sat and Sun, after they'd put in the extra speakers, with the exception of it totally crashing during The Ponys' set.
My Pitchfork highlights... Jamie Lidell (so much better on his own than when his Berlin mates turn up), Klaxons (a whole lotta fun if you managed to stand somewhere in front of the sound tent) and definitely Menomena.

Was at the show at the seaport and only listened from a seat at a bar nearby so I did not get the full-on sound or band visuals which is important. BTD came out banging a snow shovel. Menomeneana or however you spell it were pretty good, if you listen casually they tend to go to the same well pretty often. The waterfall of drums. I really like them, not sure if they are THE BEST ROCK BAND IN THE WORLD. Price was right, not too crowded.
Thanks citysol!

I'll second the comment that Cat Power's show at Pitchfork was great; it was nice to hear her in that "rocking" mode. Many of the covers she played were from her "Covers" album, particularly the fantastic "Satisfaction" that she did. Shouldn't be a surprise that she played them.
On the sound - the only band that was totally ruined by bad sound for me was Fujiya & Miyagi. Menomena didn't sound good though, although I went up front to hear them they were not as tight as on their record.
I blogged and have links to a lot of youtube videos (done by other people) at http://redredbecca.blogspot.com
