you should be...that girl from the annuals is super gorgeous

Posted by Anonymous | July 23, 2007 12:14 PM

The girl? I thought he was talking about the weather.

Posted by Sam Champion (the meteorologist, not the band) | July 23, 2007 12:23 PM

yes, the girl

Posted by Anonymous | July 23, 2007 12:27 PM

good show - but o'death really killed it on sunday at soundfix. anyone have photos from that? without a doubt one of the best shows of the year.

Why do Brazilian Girls get no love here? There set at Summerstage was great yesterday!

Posted by Anonymous | July 23, 2007 12:46 PM

band of horseshit.

Posted by cranky | July 23, 2007 12:50 PM

the sound was miserable for band of horses....worth giving another chance for those who were unimpressed.

Anonymous | July 23, 2007 12:45 PM:

i shot the first 3 or 4 songs and my pics will be up later. great show!

anyone else see that giant american flag that people were playing with in mccarren park right after the pool parties show ended?

Posted by jason | July 23, 2007 1:07 PM

yeah, the sound for Band of Horses was horrible. I thought they were good though.

Posted by Looper | July 23, 2007 1:11 PM

Posted by Looper | July 23, 2007 1:11 PM

What was the last song Band of Horses played? They said it was a cover, but I didn't catch by who.

Posted by Curious | July 23, 2007 1:12 PM

I second the Band of Horseshit comment and also the comment about Odeath killing at Sound Fix!

I took some shots at Sound Fix, but haven't posted anything anywhere.

Why would have 3 guitarist in a band to just stand there and play bar chords? Boring! And that steel guitar that the bearded dude was just strumming!? WTF?!?

Posted by Freepster | July 23, 2007 1:14 PM

the annuals suck. that girl is there only for eyecandy.

Posted by L | July 23, 2007 1:36 PM

the south is seriously taking over

Posted by nick | July 23, 2007 1:38 PM

i agree, band of horses was horrible. can you give that singer a little more echo on the vocal?(thats me being sarcastic. on every goddamn song he used that echo.) oxford collapse was the only really good band. in retrospect i should have went to see brazilian girls in central park, im sure that was a better day out.

Posted by nyc noise fan | July 23, 2007 1:50 PM

The show was worth it for the bass faces alone.

Posted by j | July 23, 2007 1:59 PM

you people are a bunch of jerks. if you don't have anything nice to say, you should keep your comments to yourself.

Posted by lo | July 23, 2007 2:01 PM

I'm tempted to call Oxford Collapse the most under appreciated band in Brooklyn. I'm also tempted to point out how god damned boring Annuals are!!!!

Didn't care to stay for Band of Horses. Wanted to stop home before heading to Asbury Lanes for The Ponys and Jay Reatard who played to about 30 people last night all in all.

Posted by Tim Duffy | July 23, 2007 2:13 PM

i thought it was unfortunate that the sound was as bad as it was. i can't speak for oxford collapse, but i have seen far better shows by annuals and band of horses with a proper sound set up.

i thought annuals had some nice moments though.

i thought oxford collapse could work on finding the pocket. they werent connecting is a unit, methinks.

props to all the musicians...i'm just sayin'

Posted by mcgrew | July 23, 2007 2:41 PM

that horn section that played with Oxford Collapse ruled! weren't they from fellow brooklyn band Arbor Day?

Posted by anonomo | July 23, 2007 3:15 PM

I believe it was just the trombone player from Arbor Day. Also, the singer from We Are Scientists joined them on percussion as well.

Posted by kim | July 23, 2007 3:19 PM

costanza!

Posted by Anonymous | July 23, 2007 3:23 PM

"they werent connecting AS a unit, methinks."

...that should say

Posted by mcgrew | July 23, 2007 3:28 PM

Sounded good from where I was standing. Great show from start to finish. A really amazingly beautiful day with an incredible soundtrack coming from the stage.

Posted by Anonymous | July 23, 2007 3:46 PM

Oxford Collapse were alright but I do think they are overly underrated..I did like the percussion.

The Annuals were pretty good but word on the person that said they were a bit boring..needs spice during live performances.

Band of Horses were amazing but I agree that the sound killed it, it was grating on my ears. The band was still pretty good though.

I quickly re-grouped with a friend at Soundfix to see O'Death for a bit. Very good show, everybody was really into it and lot's of sing-alongs.

Posted by Shinobi Shaw | July 23, 2007 3:57 PM

"overly underrated" Can you clarify what you mean by this? Not being a jerk, I'm just not sure what you mean.

Posted by not a jerk | July 23, 2007 4:03 PM

I know that helio is a large faceless corporation that distributes those annoying, occasionally fun beach balls at all the mccarren shows but i really have to tip my hat to them for the moisture fans. Those things RULE! It wasn't super warm (90+ degrees) but after like 20 minutes in total sunlight we really were getting hot out there and those fans blow that heat away in half a minute.
thanks faceless media corp!

Posted by Smug Eric | July 23, 2007 4:19 PM

Helio was also giving out free sunscreen for us numbskulls who forgot ours.

Hey Helio, thanks for saving me from skin cancer!

Posted by Donovan | July 23, 2007 4:31 PM

brooklyn vegan is dead! haters are the new yuppies! you all are embarassing.

Opinions are like assholes, everyone's a critic, and most people are DJs. It was a beautiful day, the sound was fine for the most part, and everyone (at least those around me) was having a great time. To say BOH was "horrible" is absolutely ridiculous, and it wasn't like the reverb was cranked to ten. In fact, I thought his vocals sounded great, as did the new songs they played. I don't even know what Helio does or is, and I don't care!
I do appreciate the pool parties, though, and will miss them once they're gone. Unlike a lot of the pricks who leave comments here.

Posted by Anonymous | July 23, 2007 4:54 PM

it was a ron wood.
cmon people, it's only rock and roll...

Posted by harv | July 23, 2007 5:18 PM

Posted by harv | July 23, 2007 5:18 PM

not hating here. just wish the sound was a bit cleaner. vox came through just fine, but to my ears the rest was a wash.

i 'effin love the pool parties. i hope they never go. (even though those beach balls love to spill your newly bought beer...)

;)

Posted by mcgrew | July 23, 2007 5:46 PM

but point taken, the shows are free, everyone has a good time, really no need to complain...

Posted by mcgrew | July 23, 2007 5:50 PM

yes! a hold steady reference!

Posted by itsgoodtoseeyourestillinabarbandbaby | July 23, 2007 10:17 PM

i am appalled at these comments!... honestly... annuals boring? girl just eye-candy? boh sucking? were any of these people actually there?!?! annuals were extremely entertaining and energetic...and the girl obviously talented. the sound was sound for a huge outdoor echoing pool, and boh was awesome. people need to get real.

Posted by shanks | July 24, 2007 1:11 AM

i can't believe all of this! girl fron annuals just eye candy? that's ridiculous she's obviously talented... and the band is hardly boring... band of horses performed wonderfully, and since when did this site become FULL of all 70 year old veteran sound guys or 15 year old music jerks who pick apart every little thing just because they WISH they were up there playing themselves. pathetic... all of you haters. simply pathetic.

Posted by schmoe | July 24, 2007 1:34 AM

way to put it my main shanks. the show was top self for the environment. maybe wasn't enough indie dace dribble for most of the a-holios

Posted by big tank | July 24, 2007 1:35 AM

adam!

Posted by Anonymous | July 24, 2007 11:40 AM

so what did you expect? this is a critics board, everyone here knows a hell of a lot of music and has their well informed opinions. you wont be seeing me at another boh gig anytime soon thats for sure. and the crowd was dead, they put everyone to sleep! take a poll outside by the door how many people thought they were good. i was just kicking myself because i know brazilian girls put on a killer show in the park and i missed it for this mediocre band. oh well, live and learn...

Posted by nyc noise fan | July 24, 2007 12:47 PM

Re: Band of Horses cover...
It was "Act Together," which was written by Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood for the Stones, but only appeared on Ron Wood's solo album.

Posted by management | July 24, 2007 1:04 PM

Not a Jerk: What I meant was that the band is seriously underrated, they are nothing special but I feel like people 'dislike' them or what have you just for the hell of it.

I Heard way too many people dishing out a lot of hate for this band...it just seemed so unnessesary.

I agree that the crowd was way dead (especially for a free summer outdoor show).

Posted by Shinobi Shaw | July 24, 2007 1:17 PM

Oh, ok. I wasn't sure if you meant that, or if you thought that Oxford Collapse were overly cited as an underrated band. Regardless of their current rating, I think they're pretty great and played an amazing show on Sunday.

Posted by Still Not A Jerk | July 24, 2007 2:40 PM

I don't think I've ever walked away from a pool show thinking "Hey, that was some pretty amazing sound!" The shows are still in an abandoned swimming pool, right? Not exactly an ideal situation for good sound.

Posted by julian | July 24, 2007 4:12 PM

If you have to ask, then you probably haven't been there and don't know what the hell you're talking about.

Posted by Anonymous | July 24, 2007 4:25 PM

I believe Julian was posing a rhetorical question.

Posted by Anonymous | July 24, 2007 4:53 PM

More like a retardical question.

Posted by Anonymous | July 24, 2007 5:04 PM

band of horseshit? whomever came up with this moniker is full of shit! band of horses rocked and the show was amazing!!! i agree with bigtank: 'top shelf for the environment'

it was the 6,000+ crowd (with surplus bodies hanging over the peripheral bannisters) that was dead. never seen such limp lifeless little fuckers in an audience of that size, ever...and for those of you who consider the horses a mediocre band, why in the hell did you bother going to see the show in the first place? stop whining and stop going to the pool parties if you consider the bands and the sound to be that subpar. thousands of others happily beg to differ.

:)

I was getting stoned in a porta potty when the Annuals played "Brother" [tied with "mother" for my favorite song of theirs] and I smiled and sang along and was happy to hear a song I enjoy so much performed live. Then, I ran up to the stage and danced a little and clapped loudly so the band would know I liked them and when it was all over I bummed a cigarette off some cool kids. I was pretty high for most of Band of Horses but I remember that I really enjoyed hearing The Great Salt Lake, which I thought I could sing along well to (I can't) and The Funeral, but don't tell Ben that! Those are some great songs, and you really can't beat laying out in an empty pool drinking some local brew and listening to some great music, without even having to buy a ticket or pay a service fee. Ahhhh now that's a comment. Now, does anyone want to talk about how fucking wicked the Black Lips show was at Silent Barn?

Posted by i can't say my name 'cause then you'd know i break the law | July 25, 2007 12:43 AM

Local beer? Most of that beer is made in Utica, NY and not brooklyn despite the name. If you ever go to the place in brooklyn they have one vat that's empty, soley for tour purposes.

Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2007 6:04 AM

BoH was great. Ben's voice wasn't at its best for all the songs, but in general it came out pretty well. Also the new songs are sounding good.
