Sinead O'Connor - 2007 Tour Dates
Sinead O'Connor @ Joe's Pub, NYC - June 26, 2007 (CRED)

Not that the comments aren't always a poll, but I'm especially interested to here what people think about Sinead O'Connor. Who likes her enough to buy tickets this Friday (presale) & Saturday for her show October 23rd @ Beacon Theater? I'm not knocking her - I'm just really wondering what people's interest is in Sinead, and I'm admittedly not very up on her recent music - that includes her new album Theology. Her last two NYC appearances were small ones - see pictures above and below. She also made a controversial appearance on WNYC while she was here - listen at their site. All tour dates below too....

Hell, yeah, I'll be purchasing tickets. Her new album is great. A return to form. (Her last album-- the reggae album-- wasn't THAT bad!)
Do you have any info on the pre-sale?

she's a mean, stoned, sactimonious tard. did anyone catch her appearance on wnyc's soundcheck? she should've been evicted from the studio.

I like her. But not enough to buy an album, and especially not to go see her play. (I appreciated the album that came out in 2000, but I don't remember the name. That should give you a good idea as to how much of a fan I am.)

I'm with Nick. Her obstinate, self-righteous attitude on WNYC did not make me want to give her a dime of my money.

she was quite lovely at her webster hall show. i really enjoyed her voice live.

I used to think she was one of the very best female singers around until I saw her with Sly and Robbie at Webster Hall a couple of years ago playing reggae. Great band but her voice and stage presence was awful. Her 90's output was great music but she seems to have lost it. Her new cd is ok at best, not a return to form in my opinion. I probably would pass on her Beacon show. By the way the dj John Schaefer on WNYC did not have his facts straight. I almost don't blame her for having an attitude. He asked some pretty dumb questions.

I saw her set at Joe's Pub. It was intense and beautiful. Her cover of "We People Who Are Darker Than Blue" was stunning.

I really like the new record - departure but interesting...one of the things i am interested in seeing at Voodoo.

She is super talented but also a head-case. sometimes she is great and sometimes she is crazy. It is what it is.

John Schaeffer of WNYC is a complete blowhard, and dumb as a fucking doorknob. And he can't ever just stfu. I've been at shows where this guy has hosted, and its absolute torture listening to him drone on with his stupidity during breaks. How the guy continues to work in the radio is beyond me. I'm surprised more artists don't laugh in his face.
Posted by anonymous | July 30, 2007 9:08 PM
well, whatever about all that. i listen to soundcheck just about everyday -- i think john holds that show together pretty well. especially for what it is, which is a public radio show about music - not the inner mysteries of jah or whatever drugged addled white girl trip she's on.

She's amazing... Her voice and her passion are second only to Grace Slick and maybe Nina Simone...nobody more recent has come close. Her path has been...err... a bit wobbly but, then, mine has too. Can't say I love every song but she is the real thing...nothing phony...no compromizes...not after money.. in other words, she may sound soft and folky much of the time, but she is true punk.

hey, wait...anyone have pre sale details?

Her new cd is not bad although not close to most of her earlier work. Her last cd was by the numbers reggae covers and during her tour with Sly and Robbie she seemed a little too caught up in the whole rasta thing basically pulling out every song with Jah in the title. It got a little old after a while. She did not seem like the old Sinead. Her voice was only ok and she kept singing before she got to the mike. Very odd. Her band however was one of the best reggae bands I have ever seen. Sly, Robbie & Burning Spear! If I knew she would play some old faves I would go see her at The Beacon. We'll see.

She was set up by John Schaeffer. He made a pathetic (and transparent)pretense of conducting a serious and respectful interview. He baited her, and she got hostile. End of story.
He was snide in his introduction and set the tone of the interview by being dismissive of her music. And of course she was upset. In fact, I don't know why Sinead didn't walk out!
Listen to this other interview, and you can see a very different Sinead O'Connor.

I can't seperate the girl from her music. I don't have real high bar for people in general and allow for differences of opinions and such,
But her level of disrespect, no I do not call it freedom of expression, is disgusting.
I wonder if that is how some people feel about the dixie chics(I don't)
I just DO NOT want to listen to or support her music. Now that is pure freedom of expression, plain and simple.

I think she's up there with Bjork in terms of the sheer emotional power and authority of her voice. Love her. When she's on (and yeah I agree that was for her first two records and maybe Universal Mother) she is untouchable.

Oh yeah, Grace Slick... lead singer for Jefferson Airplane (forget about the 80s Starship stuff, or the overplayed Somebody to Love). Check out Triad on the Crown of Creation album, Eskimo Blue Day or, especially, Hey Frederick from Volunteers, Rejoyce from After Bathing at Baxters (all on itunes etc). She was amazing.

The new album, Theology, is outstanding. Like something Dylan or Cash would come up with.
Yeah, she's been a polarizing crackpot, but one of the most gifted and sincere artists and provocateurs ever. This bat has been around for over 20 years now, sold 20 million albums (despite ALL the controversy) and has one of the most impressive collaborative catalogues of any artist in recent memory. I mean, she wrote and sang with U2's The Edge at age 15 ('Heroine') and just finished two big collabs with Ian Brown and Daniel Lanois...with some real exquisite projects in the years between: Peter Gabriel; Willie Nelson; Brian Eno; U2; Van Morrison; Chieftains; the list goes on.
She was a major Billboard chart star with the first album, a million-seller out of the gate...that 'Lion & Cobra' record, and Grammy nominated for her rock hit 'Mandinka.' That was two years before she even had the freakish success with the Prince song in 1990, I guess it was.
The work she did with Massive Attack in 2003 was awesome. I didn't like the reggae record (though some loved it), but this new one is exceptional. Stately, elegant, not preachy. Just insinuatingly good and meaningful.
And she *is* singing a wide range of her Billboard modern rock hits on this tour, even a couple from the first album ("Never Get Old," I believe).
Eccentric creature, no doubt, but O'Connor deserves some serious respect.
And she was right about the Catholic institution and child abuse...right to the tune of about 2 billion dollars of Catholic parishioner money (so far).

Sinead O'conor is one of the most over-rated acts in music. She has a terrible voice, as anyone who has seen her live can attest to. I mean embarrassingly bad, get up and leave the show bad. She also has a shite attitude no one gives a crap about her crazy bald bullshit. She is an attention seeker with well documented psychological problems. She is arrogant, selfish and totally self-absorbed. This would not be so bad if she were like some kind of super genius, but she is sub-average at best. At the end of the day she can kiss my ass with her psycho bullshit.
And just in case anyone forgot, Prince wrote Nothing Compares to You. Check his live version with Rosie Gaines and you will see the mark of a true genius.

"She has a terrible voice.." Yeah sure! That's why so many other artists have wanted to work with her. I'm just mentioning a few of the many collaborations: Massive Attack, Peter Gabriel, U2, Moby, Sly & Robbie, Willie Nelson, The The and Ian Brown:-)
I have seen her live three times, and she was absolutely great on all three occasions:-)

Regarding the interview on the link:
The interviewer was ill prepared to talk about her current music, almost as if he hadn't actually listened to it and was going off of notes. Also, his agenda was to conduct a Barbara Walters personal insight type of interview about the past, yet he seemed rather unsupportive of her as a person. Not exactly a winning strategy.
Sinead prefered to speak about music relevant to the here and now, rather than rehash controversy of 20 years ago. Seems appropriate since she is there to promote new music and tour, not defend herself.
If there is one thing about Sinead that is consistent throughout her time on earth thus far, it is that she is a person who will speak her mind. I rather appreciate her attempts to redirect the topics to a more relevant theme and tone.
