some people did go see SPOON in the rain

DOWNLOAD: Spoon - Stay Don't Go (live @ Greek Theatre) (MP3)

Spoon @ Rockefeller Park, NYC - July 11, 2007 (CRED)
Spoon @ Rockefeller Park

After nearly two hours of rain, the skies semi-cleared, allowing for a short window for Spoon to fit in a 45 minute set last night at Rockefeller Park on the Hudson River. [Waved Rumor]
According to the comments, the show ended up going from 8:15 - 9:00. Did anyone manage to see Spoon and Deerhunter?

Those people deserve a medal, I left my place a little before 6pm to get over there made it two blocks and my clothing had completely changed colors. Spoon was not to be last night and I stupidly didn't go to Deerhunter either. Last night I was pretty damn dumb.

Posted by Pat | July 12, 2007 8:20 AM

I saw them both. Spoon were fun, but man Deerhunter was ridiculous. To me they were trascendental last night. Best show this year so far.

Posted by Eduardo | July 12, 2007 8:53 AM

Spoon played from 8:11 - 9:03 if you want to be precise. :) Original start time was 8pm and the curfew is always 9pm, so we missed only 10 minutes.

Decent show, love their music, but their live act is just OK.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2007 9:03 AM

Saw both as well...

Deerhunter was great, a lot less weird than their show at the Mercury Lounge... no fake blood this time. Anyone stay for Bradford's entire therapy session afterwards?

Also did anyone make it to Spoon's afterparty? How was it?

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2007 9:17 AM

Spoon was a blast, I thought, with the best songs being from their excellent new CD.

It was awesome, even with the rain. I decided to sit on the railing of the walkway to the side/back of the stage. It was kinda funny how there was no real backstage, so they just went from the stage to the trailer with clear glass windows and everyone was just hovering near the trailer. Britt was really nice afterwards signing autographs and such.

i see britt everywhere in nyc. i saw him on fulton street near the seaport last friday as i left that boring fujiya show.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2007 9:50 AM

Spoon was great even though they had to cut their set short because it started to drizzle. I got soaked when I got there around 6...but I ran into a parking garage until it slowed down. It cleared and I went out to the field, and they announced that they were going to test out the equipment and do sound check...but a few minutes later it started to rain again. The umbrellas came out again...it stopped and then they had to clean the stage, test out the equipment, and do sound check. I thought it was still worth it! They were great!! They even brought out a 3-piece horn section for some of their songs...like The Underdog.

related -- The National is going on a massive tour (again) and will be at River to River on August 17th...best of all, its FREE and with The Forms and Takka Takka. SaWEET.

i didn't make the show on account of work (and rain), but a friend who did suggested i meet her at the bar where the afterparty was supposed to be on my way home. so we wandered into this wall street area bar which probably usually doesn't see the hipster crowd too often. britt and co. actually did show up after 10:30 or so, and were full on mingling with people -- maybe 50 people or so in the back room. we didn't talk to them, but they seemed like a good group of non-pretentious guys.

Posted by Qbertplaya | July 12, 2007 10:18 AM

I saw Britt outside my office a few months back, on Wall Street & William Street. Guess he's got a place down here. I hear Austin weather is real shitty this time of year.

Posted by Carl | July 12, 2007 10:37 AM

I'm glad I saw Spoon at the Union Square Virgin Megastore tuesday, I had a feeling it would rain yesterday. That show was great (by in-store standards). I don't think too many people knew about it because I got there late and walked right up near the front. They played 6 or 7 new songs and a couple off of Gimmie Fiction, ending with "My Mathmatical Mind".

Posted by sticks | July 12, 2007 10:41 AM

spoon played the most uninspired set i've ever seen - they were fucking awful last night. SO BORING! There's just no need for the music they play - they fill no void whatsoever and just are banal.

Deerhunter was the show to be at - one of the best of the year.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2007 11:03 AM

considering the weather I thought spoon did a good job. They weren't exactly inspiring but the sound was great. I think on a clearer night they would have had alot more positive energy. Overall it was pretty cool for a free show.

Posted by Dan | July 12, 2007 11:17 AM

The horns sounded a bit weak. On Letterman last night, they had twice the number of horns, and the sound was very full, as it should be.

Don't people take showers every day? Why wouldn't someone risk the rain to see a good band? It's just water.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2007 11:24 AM

Spoon were as great as ever last night. Set was short, but at least they played. Would have sucked to have been rained on for nothing. That park is a really great venue, they should use that place more often. I can't even imagine how packed it would have been if it hadn't rained. The sound was also above par for an outdooor show. It was a four piece brass section, not three. They played all of the choicest tracks off Gimmie Fiction and GaX5, including My Mathematical Mind, The Underdog, Don't Make Me A Target, I Turn My Camera On, You Got Yr Cherry Bomb, and ending perfectly with I Summon You. Would have loved to have heard Everything Hits At Once or The Way We Get By, but again, I'm just glad that they even played.

Posted by Chris | July 12, 2007 11:28 AM

Britt no longer lives in Austin. He lives in Portland.

Posted by will | July 12, 2007 11:36 AM

The band ended up at Hi-Fi around midnight. The bar turned off the jukebox at 12:30 and put the sound and tv's to Letterman just as Dave was introducing the band. Assuming that it's the group's first time on that show as Britt and a friend (gf?) both seemed pretty giddy while watching the broadcast. Was cool that he's still that excited at such things. The bar applauded after the song finished. Fun experience.

Britt is a really nice guy. I got to talk to him after a show at the Beachland Ballroom in Cleveland. Very friendly and approachable, Unlike another guy I met there the night before....hint, he was in Pavement.

RE: 11:03 Anon - "There's just no need for the music they play - they fill no void whatsoever and just are banal."

If only something could fill the void that exists in my skull after reading that comment.

It wasn't an amazing show by any means, but I thought they did a good job given the circumstances. There are certainly worse ways to spend a Wednesday evening.

Also, do they have a new bass player every other album?

Posted by Simon Belmont | July 12, 2007 11:54 AM

the new spoon leaked.

Posted by k | July 12, 2007 12:03 PM

"the new spoon leaked"

So did the new Interpol

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2007 12:24 PM

Mark Ronson's show was the place to be last night - true story. everyone was there.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2007 12:29 PM

what circumstances did spoon face exactly that they had difficulty overcoming? It didn't rain at all during the show! So what - they started a little late - what other circumstances were there? The fact they were playing outside? I don't get it.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2007 12:36 PM

The difficulties were starting late, not knowing if they'd play at all, and dealing with some rain during the set (yes, it did rain while they were playing). The stage was barely covered, so they really did have to stop if there was much rain.

Posted by JR | July 12, 2007 1:04 PM

Anon... why are you such a hater? If you'd ever actually learned to play an instrument and performed before a crowd, you'd know that screwing up the program and playing through some drizzle to a somewhat wet and muted and certainly smaller than anticipated crowd can easily affect the overall performance. the fact that you have to ask what the challenges were articulates your ignorance cleary.

moreover, you're plain wrong. they were good. not the best of the 10+ times i've seen them but good. maybe they're boring to you because you don't like their music. that's fine. i'd just ask you to stop taking up space at their performances with your wasted presence.

Posted by BD | July 12, 2007 1:19 PM

Yeah, Anonymous asshole, it's hard to get up in front of people and even play music, much less run the risk of getting ELECTROCUTED. The sound guys did the best they could also by reconfiguring the PA set-up off of the opening band's equip and onto Spoon's in quickly, allowing the show to be played in a very brief window of time.

Posted by Former Soundman | July 12, 2007 1:36 PM

hey pansies, go get a motel room with your beloved britt asap.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2007 1:38 PM

I'd like to personally thank the folks on this board who posted comments last night at approx 7pm that the show was cancelled. Really appreciate that.

"I'd like to personally thank the folks on this board who posted comments last night at approx 7pm that the show was cancelled. Really appreciate that."

I wasn't that person[s], but if you are home at 7pm, at a computer, instead of at the concert because you're precious little head might get wet, then you deserved not to go.

hay BV, please rename website: BICKERING PUSSIES

Boo-hooing Vaginas.

Posted by unt | July 12, 2007 3:03 PM

I missed the show. I stood getting pumeled by the rain for about an hour. I got there around 5:30 assuming Spoon were big enough to draw a crowd and assuming there would be some sort of security situation to contend with. I should have stayed in my office til 7 apparently and went down.

Deerhunter are an amazing band but I figured tickets were sold out. Their Mercury Lounge show is probably my show of the year. Can't wait for SeaPort!

Posted by Tim Duffy | July 12, 2007 3:08 PM

People lie on this site all the time. They don't want to be bothered by hundreds of other people as they play with themselves in an empty field.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2007 3:13 PM

Hey Anon 2:22 -
I was at a computer at 7pm because I have a job that requires it. And my plan was to head down to the concert at 7pm. Ya know, getting me there in plenty of time to see Spoon go on at 8pm. Which they did. I didnt end up going down there because I thought it had been canceled. Not because I didnt want to get my precious little head wet.

If you want to call me an idiot for listening to posters on this site, then I suppose I have no comeback to that. I wrongly assumed that people have better things to do than f*ck around with people for no reason whatsoever. Lesson learned.

Posted by MattZ | July 12, 2007 3:59 PM

hey MattZ. eat it ya baby

BV is great for getting information (when it actually works). Too bad a lot of losers with time on their hands also listen to this type of music. I guess having time and no money go hand in hand for free show freeloaders.

Posted by Ricco | July 12, 2007 7:02 PM

Standing out in a wet empty field in pouring rain while completely soaked: Free.

Keeping dry inside and avoiding 45 minute quicky show: Priceless.

man, im just pissed coin under tongue didnt get to play. i saw them at this loft party a few weeks ago in brooklyn and they blew my mind. they sound like a mix of the stooges and the liars on crack. truly amazing. they're myspace songs don't do them justice at all. guys, come on.. put up some better songs so people will know what im talking about here. i think the guy who plays bass is the guy from dirty on purpose but im not sure.. anyone know if this is correct?
oh, spoon was amazing too.

Who did Coin Under Tongue blow to get on the bill? Their myspace songs are terrible, almost ironical Spinal Tap bad. They barely played any shows.

Posted by Anonymous | July 12, 2007 11:00 PM

Some guy leaves a postive post about a band then some nimrod has to give his negative two-cents that know one cares about. That's what this site is about.

Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2007 3:13 AM

It is obvious from the previous thread that someone from the band, or a close friend, are posting here. The above anonymous positive comment is really not from a casual fan, but the band themselve. Shameless promotion.

P.S. Listen to their myspace page, the songs really are not that good.

Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2007 8:05 AM

Yeah, Anonymous pussy is right, Coin Under Tongue are total Masters of Irony. Everyone knows they are a bunch of rich kids from Conneticut. Hell , even the singers dad used to be in Link Wray's band back in the 60's-talk about nepotism.

Posted by Jeremy | July 13, 2007 11:44 AM

Link Wray ruled.

Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2007 12:07 PM

yeah, that Coin band probably blew Britt, there’s some fag shit in their Myspace photos

Posted by Guam River | July 13, 2007 12:54 PM

Obviously if someone in the band is blowing Britt, then they must be doing something right. I doubt Britt just goes around and lets anyone blow him and then gets thrown in as an opener. Therefore maybe its worth checking these guys out. I mean if not for the music then maybe for a bj.

Posted by Anonymous | July 13, 2007 1:53 PM

Yeah, I just listened to their Myspace song and WTF!? Sounds like some kind of stoner/hardcore/metal recorded in a cave-total bullshit! How the hell does a band like that get to open for Spoon when underrated bands like Bear Trainer can barely get a gig around here? They must have hired some publicity agency.

Posted by Scotty | July 13, 2007 9:39 PM

I saw Britt and the guy from Coin Uner Tongue walking down Metropolitan Ave. last night and they looked high.

Posted by 500 Blow Jobs | July 13, 2007 9:42 PM

yeah, there's no way anyone could like this band's music, much less a band as sophisticated as Spoon. I actually went to one of their "shows" but had to go into another room because people starting throwing beer and moshing like 13 year olds. Sort of sounded like a ZZ Top death metal , just real loud rock garbage.

Posted by John Studdebaker | July 14, 2007 12:09 PM

I think their Myspace songs are pretty rad. Different than what you'd expect w/Spoon, but I would have like to have seen that.

coin under tongue is what gonnorhea would sound like if it made noise while infecting your sex organs. this bands music has to be the most unpleasant thing i have heard since i ran over my neigbors cat with a lawnmower last summer. spoon shouldnt even have openers because they are already legends on their own. like prince or the eagles or something. needless to say, coin under tongue are more like a secret garage fag party than a garage rock band. these posers are nothing but queers who think that the new stooges record is mind-blowing and their best work yet. to the dorks in coin under tongue, take your weak ass band back to florida and pray that burger king is currently hiring fry cooks.

The drummer is related to the Coppolas and is an ex-skinhead. DO NOT SUPPORT!

Posted by Johnny Finger | August 13, 2007 5:38 PM

OK, this has got to stop-anyone who knows these guys knows that they are the friendliest people in the world. Greg (the drummer) worked with me at the cat shelter all last summer and even took a few kittens home when the shelter was too full. Somebody is just making shit up to make this band look bad. Don't you guys have anything better to do with your time?

If I ever see this coin band walking down the street, I'll kill them. Don't they know rock is dead?

Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2007 10:19 PM

does anyone know if coin under tongue has an album out? I can't find any anywhere.
there's no way these people commenting have seen this band live. I saw them play in a hallway at a loft party and DAMN they really had a strong vibe I haven't heard of in a while. give them a chance, you might be surprised.
