Sonic Youth performed 'Daydream Nation' @ McCarren Pool
Sonic Youth @ McCarren Pool - July 28, 2007 (CRED)

I saw Sonic Youth perform Daydream Nation in its entirety twice in the span of a couple weeks, and if you really want to know, the first time in Chicago was better. Specifically, it was better for me -- I'm not sure if I can actually compare the performances in any meaningful way because I was so much more emotionally involved the first time around, in part because I was alone in the middle of a crowd of people who responded with so much joy and passion that it couldn't help but be a more visceral experience. (In comparison, the Brooklyn audience was...well, a Brooklyn audience, i.e. "extremely psyched in their own way," as my friend very charitably put it.) [Fluxblog]Most people walked away from this show with nice things to say - even people who sat and listened outside - most people, but not everyone........
As I write, Sonic Youth is performing at McCarren Pool. I’m not taping it, I’m not attending it. I’ve deleted my post from June promoting their album and providing a link where multiple nyctaper readers have already purchased copies of the new Daydream Nation CD. Sonic Youth can take their regurgitation of their 20-years-ago heyday and shove it up their ass..........um...........Joly Punkcast and bats incorporated were more sucessful.I had an email which had been cc’d to Lee Ranaldo the guitarist. I was told to speak to Lee or soundman Aaron Mullan if there was any problem with entry. It was all supposed to be nice and simple. Only it wasn’t. The guard stopped me at the door, as well he should, and when I showed the email, he was nice enough to radio to security to get my clearance. Twenty-five minutes later, after multiple radio calls, I was told that neither Lee nor Aaron knew anything about taping and that the answer on taping was “no”.
Apologies to all the readers who have anxiously awaited my recording of this concert. When a band specifically allows taping in the past, grants specific permission in email, and ultimately leaves me standing at the gate denied entry, I’m left to consider whether its really worth expending any more time, money, and energy purchasing their product, buying tickets to their concerts, and promoting the performances through sharing my recordings. Given the way I was jerked around tonight, the answer with Sonic Youth is the same answer I received at the gate–”no”.
A band that could give a crap about their fans really shouldn’t get support from anyone. Don’t buy Sonic Youth CDs, don’t buy tickets to their concerts, and don’t give them any attention whatsoever. They’re tired old hacks anyway. 1988 is over. [nyctaper]
Sonic Youth played McCarren last summer too.

Having been exposed to Sonic Youth only a few times before Saturday, I have to say that I thought it sounded awesome (at least from across the street in the park).

Man, what a whiny little bitch nyctaper is. Go fuck yourself.

What a baby.

nyctaper---next time your pussy hurts, take some asprin.
Why do people keep referring to this as a 20 yr anniversary? That record came out in '88---not '87.
While I was pleased with their performance of Daydream Nation I was not happy to be subjected to half of Rather Ripped. Had I known that was going to happen I would have split right after they finished "Eliminator Jr."

HEy NYCtaper. You ar ethe person who is frowning and good because i hate you. taping is for dorks. rocking is for me.
SY makes your ass clap with thunderous riffs. From space come rays and from dominos comes pizza.

Hi BV,
why link to bitter personal messages like that of nyctaper? who is this guy anyway and what does his/her personal fiasco have to do with the concert?
Posted by Alizee | July 31, 2007 10:01 AM
Having never been to a pool show before I have to say that this show was a total blast. I still can't believe how good that place sounded. I figured that a wide open space surrounded by brick and concrete would sound awful, but it sounded so good. Funzo

The first Sonic Youth I bought was Evol back in 86 and the first time I saw SY was for their Goo tour in 90, and I have seen them multiple times ever since. The Brooklyn show was in my opinion a little weak. I thought the sound sucked… seemed like Thurston was having microphone problems… overall things seemed to be dragging with band with the exception of Shelly who was in full form. On the other hand, I’m always happy to see this band and Daydream Nation is definitely a seminal album and I’m very glad to have been part of what I consider a historical experience.

Loved the show, they sounded great, but it sorta confirmed what I've felt all along.. and I know this is blasphemy and all, but as a huge fan who owns all their records and goes to see them every time they play in town, I feel justified in saying: Daydream Nation is about 2 songs too long. although I wouldnt be able to pick which 2. Maybe I just prefer a normal show becuase they tend to whip out a surprise or two. obviously there were no surprises here. anyway all that said it was really was a flawless GREAT performance and I'm glad to have seen it. I teared up a few times actually..
Posted by Anonymous | July 31, 2007 10:08 AM
It sounds like neither Lee, the sound guy, nor anyone in Sonic Youth knew about this at all. Maybe that's because email is impersonal and Sonic Youth probably gets more than a few every day. "cc'd to Lee Ranaldo" doesn't sound like "specific permission" to me.
so, nyctaper - you missed an amazing show. most people got in using magic tokens called TICKETS. These can be purchased with money and, unlike an email supposedly forwarded to a famous rock icon you've never met, will guarantee you entry.

b). taco time guy/girl is full blown crazy. no one eats dominos pizza.

Excellent show. Great Venue. Sound could have been better.
Posted by Anonymous | July 31, 2007 10:19 AM
So this person wanted to tape Sonic Youth becuase he seemingly likes them and is a fan but when it didn't work out they somehow become "tired old hacks" and "1988 is over." That's some great logic there.
Posted by will | July 31, 2007 10:20 AM
The show was amazing. The sound at Mccarren is good if not overly loud. It was great to see such an influential album played live. It only accentuated how mediocre there newer material is when they played half of the new album after Daydream Nation. Overall, I'd say it was the best show I've seen this summer.
Posted by Jonny | July 31, 2007 10:21 AM
They sounded incredible and it was a great experience to see them perform one of my favorite albums of all time from start to finish. I think the problem was that Daydream Nation is a long record, and it's not sequenced like a live set list. Taken song by song it's fine, but stretched out into one long concert it's more hypnotic than rocking. Plus it was a hot, humid night. Everybody was definitely into it though. They actually seemed to perk up a little more for the Rather Ripped encores.
Posted by JD | July 31, 2007 10:22 AM
Bats Inc. used a cassette to tape the show? Yeah, I be that sounds great. What is this, 1981? If you're gonna bother taping a show, at least get some real equipment. And no, your Talkboy doesn't count.
I sympathise w/ nyctaper a bit. He got written permission from the band/sound engineer to tape the show and was denied at the door because of preshow confusion. Too bad for all of you who didn't make it or those that did and would like to enjoy it again, cause judging by the White Stripes tape posted last week, it would have been an excellent recording.
Posted by FrixFrixFrix | July 31, 2007 10:29 AM
so now that this is done when are they going to start doing "Dirty" shows? i totally liked 1992 better than 1988 if we're gonna be honest.
Posted by pete | July 31, 2007 10:34 AM
so nobody's clammoring for "experimental jet set" shows?
why does everyone hate that album?
Posted by Anonymous | July 31, 2007 10:58 AM
How about they just do shows where only Lee sings?
Posted by db | July 31, 2007 11:02 AM
Another disgruntled taper, wow what a cliche. That too has been going on since 1988, no wait even before 1984 when the Dead finally put up a taping section. Tapers provide great stuff (especially when they let out a patch), but man do they have egos. Get over it nyctaper, we've heard this rant before.
Posted by rescueblues | July 31, 2007 11:18 AM
I too would actually be more psyched to hear the entirety of Dirty played, as much as I really love Daydream. The Dirty tour back in 1992 has been unmatched for me. Sonic Youth, Pavement and Polvo. It was an indie rock wet dream. Sometimes you get lucky to come of age at the right time.
Oh and I also feel like Experimental Jet set is underrated.
Posted by will | July 31, 2007 11:41 AM
pretty much every sonic youth record other than Daydream Nation is underrated. except maybe a thousand leaves
Posted by Anonymous | July 31, 2007 11:44 AM
I don't understand, is he supposed to be allowed to get into the show for free so he could tape it?? And then he whines when he couldn't get in? I mean, if he had a ticket he could have just gone to the show anyways, right?
Posted by Lars | July 31, 2007 11:56 AM
he had a ticket, he left because they wouldn't allow him to bring his recording equipment in (which is most likely a small DAT recorder & a couple small mics that clip onto his hat. not a giant boom mic and a reel to reel or anything). why is everyone assuming he was trying to get in for free?
Posted by Anonymous | July 31, 2007 12:23 PM
My bad. Still, I'd be very very surprised if this is the first time this has happened to him (not being able to tape a show b/c of whatever-crazy reason, in this case not getting through the entrance).
Posted by Lars | July 31, 2007 12:29 PM
Why are so many people talking about this taper guy and not the concert itself?
Posted by Anonymous | July 31, 2007 12:35 PM
I wish I could've seen this show anywhere but Brooklyn. You uptight yuppies really know how to make a live rock experience suck. SY sounded great, though, almost as good as when my mommy took me to see them opening for Neil Young and Crazy Horse way too many years ago.
Posted by . | July 31, 2007 12:38 PM
thought the show was awesome. have seen SY 15 times or so, this may have been the best.

i missed the Moody Blues though, so if you have a copy of "nights in white satin", i'm willing to pay big bucks.

When bands need to do one of their classic albums in its entirety on tour, that is not a good sign. Sonic Youth? More like Sonic Old! Sonic Old! They are not young, they are old!

I have a tape of Elton John hits taped from the radio if anybody is interested.

i was at hippiefest! i have a tape version of the moody blues entire set. i will trade for a copy of the sonic youth show. lets talk.
Posted by hippie | July 31, 2007 12:59 PM
Wow so much stink flying around and i know it sort of ages me a little but so funny to see people saying how this was the best sonic youth show they have ever seen(what have you seen? like 4 shows total hahaha) or how lucky you were to see the dirty tour in 92. Firstly, you should all be sad nyctaper didnt get in. His recordings are stellar and you would all be downloading this one right now instead of yapping against him on here. He has a legit gripe. This guy has been around a while and knows what he is doing. He goes through the proper channels and this time he got screwed and it looks like it was by the people who agreed ahead of time. That is just not cool and he has a legit beef. And yes as stated above, the guy buys a ticket to the show dummies. It is odd though cause SY have been taper friendly for many many years. Id love to find out what really happened.
Also, to bats inc who posted on his blog. Please die you fucking schmuck. I am not from Williamsburg but your incessant stereotyping of the people there was so dopey. Plus you are an idiot who got it wrong about the slits set. There are only 3 original members in the group now champ not the "4 50 year olds" you speak of. And haha you are taping on cassette. It probably sounds as lame as the shaky crappy youtube videos you posted. You sit there and crap on the crowds at the shows yet you are one of the annoying fuckers these days with your damn camera trying to film shows and blocking other people's view. Which is probably the worst thing in concert going these days.
That all being said, it was a great great show. No way was it the show of the summer or year and certainly not the best sonic youth show I have seen. Not by far. But rarely have i seen them play a bad show. There were a lot of special moments in the show though like the enourmous love Lee got for his songs which doesnt usually happen. He looked so happy that night and it was fun to see his son run out on stage. If you have ever seen Lee around town with his son you know he is a really amazing hands on father. Steve drummed his ass off. All in all they paid great service to an amazing record.

What I wanna know is: how were the Slits? I loved them at Syrup Room last year, but unfortunately I missed the boat on this show.

"They’re tired old hacks anyway. 1988 is over" nyctaper you are an asshole! And BV why even post what this jerk has to say? Show was cool. Sould have been louder however. Rather Ripped songs were rather dull. Typical Brooklyn crowd. Looking bored while texting everyone they know to tell them they are at a really cool show. No one metioned The Slits, a great band from back in the day. They were pretty cool and a great choice for an opener.

NYCTPAPER...so if the email was cc'd to Lee, what was his response? Did he even respond saying you could tape? who sent you this email in the first place? That's who you should be mad at...your unreliable source putting "words" into Lee and Aaron's mouths.
But hey, your recount of your experience says all it needs to say, and quite loudly. You are a petty and bitter fan when things don't go your way.

Daydream Nation is the most important indie/alt-rock album ever.
It's certainly not the biggest selling, nor is it probably even the best. However, it quietly guided the direction of alt-rock when hair-bands ruled and everyone thought alt/college rock only meant REM.
Every show I go to today, from Arcade Fire to Tokyo Police Club to just about every alt-rock band featured on this site owes a debt of gratitude to SY.
I've been to hundreds of live shows but watching them perform this album live in it's entirety might be the most significant moment in my concert lifetime.
The hairs stood up on the back of my neck for the entire show. It's why I go to shows. I loved and cherished every second of it.

I have taped Sonic Youth, Beck, TV on the Radio, the Smiths, the Doobie Brothers, and this is the kind of disrepect I have to put up with? Get real guys, if it wasn't for people taping shows like me, music would cease to exist. Some people have a guitar, I have a TASCAM. Deal with it,

Oh, and the hits. This silly rant has generated more hits in the last 6 hours than the last three months with the 2 White Stripes, Wilco, Fiery Furnaces, Richard Thompson, 2 Roger Waters, Sugarcubes, and Dinosaur Jr. recordings combined.
And the downloads are free, as most of your know. No one is selling anything, so there's no "bootlegging" involved. Flame away!

Rerun? Want to meet me in the men's room at Teddy's to pick up your Moody Blues cassette from Thursday night? Come by in about an hour, my wait service shift starts then. I gotta walk over from Union Ave. so I gotta leave soon.

excuse me, Rerun, but I have an email cc'd to Michael McDonald, specifically asking me to tape "What A Fool Believes." This time go easy on the popcorn, it screws with the bass.

I think this thread has lost it's focus.
This was an unbelievable set of one of the most important albums by one of the best alt-rock bands ever.

GREAT album but a mediocre show in 1988 and even more boring in 2007. Believe what you will but I gotta say, for all their ups & downs, SY's great strength was ** moving forward **.
This was by the #s crap; like Hendrix resurrected compared to nonsense like the the "one-time-only" (right, assholes) Slint reunion, sure but... how many good-to-excellent NEW records are there? not sooo many but more than enough that foolosh trips down memory lane like this aren't an embarassment.

Sonic Youth was awesome. Daydream Nation is amazing. Kim, Thurston and Lee still have it. NYCTaper?

nyc taper- its ranaldo, not renaldo. ok, you corrected it now, i see...
and btw- just to clarify, did you post on the sy message board in the last month looking for a ticket to this gig? i seem to remember you or another taper looking for a ticket but now i cant find that post, it might have been deleted.
and on your website you do ask for donations to your pay pal account and for tickets to shows. i can dig that though, times are tough...

It was another taper who was looking for a ticket. I bought mine months and months ago. The girl who bought my ticket for face outside the door 10 minutes before the show was pretty happy though.
I pay for all of my tickets, but sometimes people make specific requests to ask me to tape bands and buy me the ticket or get a guest list pass.
I also pay for the bandwidth to be able to host unlimited lossless (i.e. huge files) downloads. Donations, click-through ads, and commission ads don't even come close to meeting the bandwidth costs. The site operates at a loss, but that's no problem--that's not why the site exists.

goodnight, and good luck.

nyctaper, there is a likely reason why you were not allowed to tape the concert. there are rumors that sonic youth is planning on making a live daydream nation dvd. to do that, they have been videotaping shows and have also likely been taping the soundboards. if they plan on releasing the material, why should you be taping it?

god bless the tapers
