the Copacabana closed

CopacabanaIt was only at its current location for five years though...

When the last dancer walked off the floor of the Copacabana early today (Sunday, July 1, 2007), it marked the end of a landmark that had repeatedly restyled itself since 1940 - and may do so again.
The Copa spent five years at 34th St. and 11th Ave. before closing its doors because of the proposed extension of the No. 7 subway line. [Daily News]

I had a radio show in college and a dude would call up every single week requesting Copacabana by Barry Manilow. We would have been willing to play it, but it was nowhere to be found. Eventually (and I mean after like three months), he stopped calling. But one day, my partner was digging through the "Good Life" section, and he stumbled across the record. We played it on the off chance that he was still listenting. The dude called in all excited, "Oh my God. Thank you so much! This is great!!!" I still can't figure out why he called during the song that he was so intent on hearing. Maybe it actually WAS Barry Manilow? That's my Copacabana story.

I used to go to the Copa a lot back in the old days. Friday nights were for wives, but Saturday nights were for girlfriends. I'd skip the line by going in through the back door and walking in past the kitchen. I'd always get a seat up front. It was a real treat to see Henny Youngman in his prime.

I guess music and passion are no longer in fashion.

Omg! I'm so glad this place closed. It was home to ugly ghetto people who are clueless about fashion. Oh, and the music sucked too.

Thank you Jesus!
