The Decemberists are playing a free MySpace secret show at the Mohawk in Austin tonight (July 11).
They play a not-free show at Central Park Summerstage with Grizzly Bear and Land of Talk (who are also playing Citysol) on Monday July 16th. It's sold out, but I have one pair of tickets to give away to one lucky winner. To win, e-mail BVCONTESTS@HOTMAIL.COM (subject: Decemberists) and let me know what the last show you saw was. One winner will be picked at random. Contest ends July 12 @ 5pm EST.
Check out their recent appearance on Leno, tour dates, and other stuff, below....
Jay Leno - July 9, 2007
We Both Go Down Together w/ LA Philharmonic - July 7
The show was the latest in a new Phil tradition that began last year with the appearance of the Scottish group Belle and Sebastian: Take the latest brainy band with an obscure sense of humor and fondness for antiquarian instruments, with a fan base exploding from cult to something large enough to almost fill the 17,000-capacity Bowl, match them with a few up-and-comers and position the orchestra to give rock songs a new dimension. The Decemberists Backstage at Bonnaroo 07It may be less formulaic than that, but whatever it is, it seems to be working: Both times, these shows have produced near-sellout crowds — Saturday's turnout was just shy of 14,000 — and roars of approval from the audience. [LA Times]
And in related exciting news, the Decemberists chose Land of Talk to not only open Summerstage, but to tour with them in Europe too....

who's shelling out 35$ to see the decemberists? if it were 15 or 20 i'd understand.

T'would be nice if there was an orchestra for the Summerstage show. Lincoln Center is just around the corner.

If you get your tickets at the Mercury Box Office it's $30--no service fees. I'm willing to pay $15 for Grizzly Bear (have before) and $15 for The Decemberists. For spending a nice evening in Central Park with my friends at a show, that's a fair price.

A nice "romantic" eveing in central park would have been better.

I shelled out to take my kid sister to see her favorite band and I can't wait.

Anyone know the supporting act(s) for the Philadelphia show on July 15?

there's also another ticket giveaway for the summerstage show if you go to the land of talk in-store at sound fix on sunday.

I'm so livid Decemberists aren't playing with an orchestra at Central Park. Anyone listen to this concert mp3? Absolutely stunning renditions.

Yes I agree the Decemberists are an incredibly overrated band. I know that people are going to attack me for saying so because that's what Brooklyn Vegan is after all, but it has to be said. Colin Meloy's voice is incredibly grading, and his songs are all incredibly pretencious. They have never done anything for me. That being said, I saw them at Austin City Limits (my friend is a huge fan) and they put on a great live show.

HARK, I ATTACK THEE WITH VIGOR FOR SLANDERING THE MIGHTY MELOY, THOU WASTREL
Posted by TIBERIUS PRETENCIOUS | July 11, 2007 7:11 PM
I think his voice has incredible grading too.. and it's a good thing they're so pretencious because it prevents them from ever becoming pretentious..

It's true, his voice is grating and just plain unattractive. That said, I admire them and think they're clever. I own three of their albums and never, ever listen to them.

The "secret" show in Austin was fantastic. Great set, much fun was had by most, and they took the encore outside playing "Mariner's Revenge Song" in a circle surrounded by gob-smacked fans.
