the Decemberists @ Central Park Summerstage, NYC - pics

DOWNLOAD: The Decemberists - Engine Driver (MP3)

I've been to my fair share of Decemberists shows, but I think this is the first time I got a picture of Colin Meloy getting air...

Decemberists @ Summerstage

The show last night (July 16, 2007) at Summerstage was perfect start to end - Land of Talk into Grizzly Bear into the Decemberists - I couldn't ask for anything more. Colin and crew played a great set to a sold out crowd of endearing, and younger-than-ever, fans. More pics soon.

were we at the same show? I almost fell asleep...no energy in the decemberists' set.

I thought it was high energy and I was sitting in the bleachers. They could have turned up the sound a little though. If someone says there was no energy then that makes little sence because Colin had the whole crowd under his control when everyone did the sitting part towards the end of the show!

sound limits at that venue. I hate seeing shows at summerstage but I went b/c I like all three bands. all three were good but I've preferred them each in other venues more

Walked in right after grizzly bear finished... walked right back out. Pissed I missed them again.

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2007 11:35 AM

I was outside. All I heard was Colin saying something about sleeping, sleeping. What happened exactly?

A truly great performance!

I love the Decemberists and, despite terrible sound in the back bleachers, loved the show. And you're right about the young fans. I was sitting next to a group of four teenage girls who knew all the words to everything!

Lousy pics, full set list:

decemberists played WAYYYY too long

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2007 11:44 AM

man, remember when the decemberists were good? before they made an album for airplay in dentist offices? i reaaaallllyyyy loved 'em too. :(

Land of Talk was ok, but you could tell they are relatively new... the lead singer seemed nervous and whenever she addressed the crowd you couldn't understand a word she said. That aside, they played well.

Grizzly Bear was incredible as usual. I think their live performance loses a little something when outside vs. in a closed environment where you are surrounded in sound, but they still manage to sound great. 'Lullabye' was not only the highlight of their set, it was the highlight of the night - I can't stress that enough.

Decemberists were very fun, although they played too long. I would have much rather seem Grizzly Bear get some extra time. Their antics towards the end, plus the chance to hear Mariner's Revenge Song live made it all worth it. I was psyched to hear Oceanside and The Island, too.

"I was outside. All I heard was Colin saying something about sleeping, sleeping. What happened exactly?"

He put the entire band "to sleep" by going over to each member in turn, and telling them to go to sleep. Each one, played slower and slower until the stopped and collapsed. It was very cute.

Overall, I enjoyed the show a lot. I thought they had great energy and definitely seemed to be having more fun than they did the previous day in Philly (though the show with the orchestra was amazing - they played "The Tain"!).

Next time get a damn ticket, Anon@11:36!

i thought it was a rather enjoyable show! the decemberists really rocked it out, and their energy seemed to get more intense during the encore. i'd watch them again in a NY minute, teenybopper fans and all =)

Paul | July 17, 2007 12:14 PM got it right.

it was such an amazing show! i didn't know what to expect, and i was blown away.

So sadz I missed GB... *sigh*

It would have been my 5th time seeing them... they never disappoint... NEVER.

I saw Decemberists in Joysey City a few months ago and was surprised by the energy coming off the crowd and the band... so I am sorta shocked that they didn't "bring it" in Central Park.

Why do they always close with that damn mariners revenge song? the drummer acts like and idiot and it goes on for way too long

Posted by Anonymous | July 17, 2007 12:55 PM

man, all you people do is bitch. it was a wonderful show. i love that band and i was skeptikal about going to this show but i am so glad i did.

you people are pathetic bitching a show is too long. They only played 90 minutes not 3 hours.
Its amazing that people actually only want to see a band play 60 minutes and pay $50 for it. If you don't like the length walk out and go home.

I thought it was an excellent set and I love the antics and that the Decemberists like to get the audience involved. Let alone the quality musicianship. They keep getting better.

True story: Colin Meloy is the only musician I've seen smash his guitar on stage.

Something about this troubles me....

I was in the bleachers and agree about the sound being too low, but the Decemberists were amazing. "Mariner's Revenge" was incredible. The crowd was really into the whole show. Perfect evening.

great show. amazing weather.

"Colin Meloy is the only musician I've seen smash his guitar on stage."

1967, I think it was the Filmore East, a kid named Jimi Hendrix did an opening set for the Monkees with a guitar-smashing bit.

Posted by Anonymous | July 18, 2007 2:38 PM

how on earth could colin meloy smash his guitar?
for what purpose , it certainly couldn't be because he was "rocking" too hard

maybe he forgot the words to one of his shanties

I thoroughly enjoy John Moen's antics during Mariner's Revenge Song. You guys need to lighten up. Everyone's so fucking worried about their indie cred; you bought tickets to a show, you might as well enjoy yourself...

I've seen The Decemberists four times, and though I've experienced the sleeping bit, and a better reenactment Mariner's Revenge Song, I still take something away from every show. The Decemberists never put on a mediocre show; they always go above and beyond my expectations.
