RSVP was basically bullshit for most of the show I figure, but I got there at around 3 though when it was shitty out. Show was really great though, lots of great older material.

loved the show. rain pretty much stopped, TVOTR were great.

the RSVP was useless, only cause it was raining, it would of been necessary if it was nice outside, the show was great, lots of old stuff, but the sound system wasn't terribly loud, and i was front row dead center. i mean the last time i saw em @ irving plaza it was alot louder, and i didnt even have plugs in this time around!

I RSVP'd but i came like 5 30, they checked my girlfriends bag, and that was it. I just walked in.

It was a very good show, not GREAT, but very very good.

I got to the park around 5:30 and there was definitely no need for an RSVP line. I walked right in, no line, no problems. The pool was not even close to being crowded by that time and TVOTR took the stage at 6PM. It did get more crowded, but the rain earlier in the day thinned the crowd out to a manageable size. I thought the show was excellent (closing with "Staring at the Sun" was perfect).

Really really fun show! The RSVP was not necessary. At one point, Tunde even cracked "Hey everyone, thanks for RSVP-ing to a free show" and started laughing.

They were _killing_. I have a writeup and photos at my place:

http://secretsociety.typepad.com/darcy_james_argues_secret/2007/07/tv-on-the-radio.html

I got there around 2 PM and even then, nobody bothered to check the RSVP list. It was pretty clear that the rain would keep a lot of people away.

More crowded than I've seen it for any other free show there, despite the rain. No line at all when I walked in at 6.

TVOTR and Celebration both killed. I had such a great time!!

Posted by Anonymous | July 30, 2007 8:51 AM

There was no line at all, the sound got much better after the first or second song.

I thought TVOTR was absolutely amazing. one of my favorite performances i have ever seen. they rocked and really showcased their amazing musical talent. I really enjoyed the way they did "dirtywhirl"

I so wish I was there!! The RSVP combined with the rain threw me off. It sounded awesome. Anyone have a full setlist?

Posted by Oliver Klein | July 30, 2007 9:49 AM

so, the rain made it a bit more sparse. had it been sunny out, it would have been packed. why is it such a big deal to put your name on an rsvp list? too many people just like to bitch about anything; especially when it's free.

I've seen tvotr and celebration before and were unimpressed with them. However, after seeing them yesterday, i must have seen off nights of both bands. Both were great yesterday. TVOTR were amazing. The best show I saw all summer.

Posted by Anonymous | July 30, 2007 9:54 AM

I have seen TVOTR 3 times, 2 times in indoor clubs and once last year at Prospect Park. Although I was really looking forward to the Prospect Park show, I ended up being really disappointed. I thought maybe their sound just didn't carry well outside, but it must have just been an off day. Last night was amazing, they were amazing!

The rain saved jellynyc.

My pants fell off and my face got red cause people could see my bum! The show had musics!

i got there at three just when the first band started to play and there were not more than 500 people there. it was pouring. they were pretty good, sorry forgot your names. celebration was good as well. tv on the radio, i think the first part of the set was bogged down with too many mid-tempo rockers, but they picked it up in the second half. by the encores people were really into it. all in all probably the most into it performance and crowd this year, except for dan deacon.

thank you jellynyc for a summer of wonderful free shows. no one puts thought into their shows like you do.

i had such a blast yesterday, especially dancing in the puddles.

can't wait for ghostland!

"but the sound system wasn't terribly loud, and i was front row dead center"

Just a little SOUND ADVICE 101 to all the poor fans that get to shows early so they can be front row center...you probably will NOT hear a great mix as there are NO SPEAKERS front row center. See those big stacks of speakers on the LEFT and RIGHT? THAT'S WHERE THE SOUND COMES FROM.

Now, sometimes there are what's called CENTER FILLS, (small speakers that are spread across big stages like at McCarren, but not at venues like Bowery Ballroom or Irving Plaza), that will help all the front row fans hear the whole mix. Did the pool use these?

BUT there is also something called a DECIBEL LIMIT that is often enforced by the parks department that keeps levels reasonable at outdoor shows, (in every state), so as not to disturb residents in the area that don't necessarily want to hear hipster rock...

As a sound engineer that is constantly touring around the world, and constantly reading these message boards, i'm sick of hearing the same complaint..."i was front and center and couldn't hear the vocals or it wasn't loud enough"...or someones just complaining the sound was "bad" without saying what was "bad" about it...just using it as an excuse to rant. i know 99.9% of you do not know the first thing about sound equipment, acoustics, etc. If it doesn't sound exactly right, try moving around the room. Usually the best place to stand at a show is as near the sound booth as possible. Also, give the sound person a break...I know I've been told by certain artists and paid to mix vocals lower in the mix...or drowned in reverb to the detriment of the mix...but would anybody know that during a show? Probably not.

So what's my point? Give the sound person a break. A big band like TV on the Radio hire someone that they trust and makes them feel comfortable and mixes the sound the way they want and in accordance of the law pertaining to outdoor shows. Unless the sound is absolutely abysmal and there is continuous feedback, (probably the monitor engineers fault anyway...but do you even know what monitors are?), and the sound person is throwing rocks at you...keep your complaints to yourself.

they ended with "staring at the sun". which was bloody brilliant... and the played so much of their old stuff. i was mighty, mighty happy by the end the show... i even went alone as my friend were afraid of the rain. completely awesome.

Posted by me | July 30, 2007 11:39 AM

i happened to spot the sound monitoring guy, he measured 110 decibles at about midway point between the stage and sound tent (he stood right next to me thats how i know). that is pretty damn loud. I had my plugs in at that point, they were necessary even back by the sound board.

"Now, sometimes there are what's called CENTER FILLS, (small speakers that are spread across big stages like at McCarren, but not at venues like Bowery Ballroom or Irving Plaza), that will help all the front row fans hear the whole mix. Did the pool use these?"

There was a small pair of center fills, positioned at either side of the stage but angled sharply inward.

hey anon 11:26, sounds like you need a hug...

was any one else disapointed by the show? I love TVOR, but it didn't feel right, the only song I was really into live was the Wrong Way, everything else was too dark or intimate sounding to really work that type of outdoor show, I actually liked the Prospect Show last year because they seemed to be aware of that problem and combatted it by the sort of percussive jamboree (I forget exactly what they did, but I remember lots of people on stage and lots of drumming, and I remember it working well) just wondering if anyone else had the same experience.

Posted by Anonymous | July 30, 2007 12:27 PM

I thought show was great because it was like a backyard show for them. Prospect Park show was superior, but I'll take 'em both. Great band.

Heh, funny photo - "Staring at the Sun"

I think they played a new song...anyone have a full set list?

i felt really happy to show my appreciation for TVOTR yesterday. I think they are the pride of brooklyn(williamsburg) and for all the great music they have given us, they deserved a giant thansk and warmest welcome. i think it happened yesterday. loved it, love them. best band in town for sure

Posted by Anonymous | July 30, 2007 3:10 PM

who was that shit band before celebration? was the singer/guitarist completely shitfaced and slurring or was that the rain playing tricks?

Posted by Anonymous | July 30, 2007 3:25 PM

Did Kyp get a haircut?/!

Posted by joly | July 30, 2007 5:30 PM

It was a good show but I was kinda dissapointed. Last year's show at Prospect Park was the best show I've ever seen, so I guess I was bound to think less of this one. The show on sunday really made me appreciate how great it was to see Antibalas playing with them last year. TV's sound improves so much with horns.

This was my first TOTR show. I love their albums thought the show was great. I posted some pictures I took on my website if anyone is interested.
