M.I.A. WAS M.I.A. FOR 3 HOURS!

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2007 2:00 AM

MIA was great went on around 1ish. Killed it. Im in love again, like every time I seen her since 04. They were filming for a DVD. I danced wild and annoyed people but whatever, we all had fun, each and every one of us. I had on a joe cool(snoop dog) supreme shit and a black hat with two girls and two guys so if we bothered you sorry, but you gotta cut loose.

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2007 3:11 AM

anon 3:11am wow advertise your played out sneaker gear a little more...from what i read your pretty wack id knock you out if you would have annoyed me

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2007 3:33 AM

3 and a half hour wait for M.I.A. = bullshit

set was really disappointing and it just felt really forced. a lot of the people dancing didn't even look liek they were enjoying it, but just did it because they felt like they had to. it was lame.

Posted by jason | July 26, 2007 4:18 AM

ha ha anyone complaining about a "3 hour wait" for MIA is ridiculous. if you did a little research before you showed up @ 9 you would have known she was scheduled for 12, and she actually went on at about 1230. "a lot of the people dancing didn't even look liek they were enjoying it, but just did it because they felt like they had to. it was lame." ? i could see how you wouldnt enjoy the show-if you were busy trying to determine whether or not other people were enjoying it. trust me no one in new york dances because they feel like they have to...

anyway dont believe the haters MIA kicked ass last night, new songs sound awesome, cant wait for the album! love the weird-ass droney song that quotes the pixies. and she closed with a new one that sampled the clash "straight to hell". totally cool in every way. hope she'll come back when the album actually comes out!

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2007 3:33 AM...
I missed a letter, it was "shirt", just wanted anyone that was there to maybe get a feel for who I was, it's a fucking snoop dogg t-shirt, didn't know that was sneaker gear, plain black hat, pretty fucking hip, come to Bronx and loose your fucking teeth jerk off. And yeah we waited like 45 minutes tops, went to a bar on Nassau until like 11:15 with $3 drafts and got into Studio B at 11:45. She played a ton of new stuff too that sounded great, overall a great night although some people seemed they just wanted to take pics to tell people they were there, but to each their own, everyones idea of a good time is different.

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2007 9:50 AM

"i could see how you wouldnt enjoy the show-if you were busy trying to determine whether or not other people were enjoying it. trust me no one in new york dances because they feel like they have to..."

i was up front for a while (yes i was photographing but i was on assignment and i still am a really big fan of hers and originally had purchased a ticket) and even she just seemed like she wasn't all there. i texted my friend who was standing in the middle area that i thought the show was pretty lame and he responded back that he completely agreed. i moved towards the back and noticed that some people were getting into it and that maybe it was just me, but a lot of those people just looked really bored. i've also been waiting to see her live ever since "Arular" came out and so maybe i hyped her up a bit much in my mind, but still, i thought it was disappointing.

Posted by jason | July 26, 2007 9:54 AM

"i was on assignment... [but I]originally had purchased a ticket"

So, how much did you scalp the ticket for?

Posted by Craig | July 26, 2007 10:08 AM

i sold it for cost, $25.

Posted by jason | July 26, 2007 10:13 AM

jason- maybe next time put the camera and phone away for a minute? and just, like, listen and watch and dance? just a thought.

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2007 10:14 AM

I only photographed for the first 3 or 4 songs just to get the shots I needed and then moved back from the front. I didn't have my camera out the rest of the time and still didn't enjoy it. To each his own I guess.

Posted by jason | July 26, 2007 10:22 AM

oh hey morgan, if you see this, i'm sorry i didn't have the balls to ask for your #

I back up all complainers about MIA going on well after midnight. that is ridiculous. It's WEDNESDAY. Not Saturday. My friends and I gave up and left at 12:15 AM. I know NYC is the city that never sleeps...but I have a job in order to pay for living in the city that never sleeps that I must wake up for in the morning. I go to plenty of concerts on weeknights and rarely complain about these shows starting at 11pm on a Tuesday...but 12:30 and later when your website says a show is at 9?? Not cool. As for the comment saying: "if you did a little research"... the studio b website said 9pm. Citysearch said 10pm. There was no "opener" listed. I thought she would start by 11. The is something wrong with a system where I have to hunt around "researching" on the internet to find out what time a concert will really be. Had I known I would have sold someone my ticket or not purchased one in the first place.

And, yes, all of this will be voiced in a call and letter to Studio B.

Devotchka were amazing! I looove the Speigeltent. It's not like any other venue in the city and was perfect for the band!

Posted by T-Bird | July 26, 2007 11:13 AM

Bat for Lashes was really good, but when did she go on? Her site said 9pm but when we got there, the board said 10. But when I came back at 10, it seemed like she already had started. Unless she really only played for an hour?

Posted by valkin | July 26, 2007 11:18 AM

In my experience when a show is listed at a certain time I expect it to actually start 2-3 hours later, for me it's always like that and on occasion I miss an act due to this because I go find a cheap bar nearby for a few hours. Also maybe you guys haven't seen her before but I knew there was gonna be a DJ or 2 spinning for a few hours before she went on, shit I even thought Spank Rock or someone might show and be on until 1 or later before she went on which would have been great just by past experience to these types of shows. I'm sorry to those that couldn't swing a day off, but I honestly expected to be getting home around 3-4 ever since the show was announced.

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2007 11:20 AM

sam - why didnt you just call the venue and ask what time shes schedueld to play? just fyi for future reference studio b headliners pretty much always go on after midnight, close to 1 in many cases. I got up to work this morning too.. you shouldve stuck around, it was worth being a little sleepy for.

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2007 11:25 AM

I think BfL went on right around 10pm, maybe a little after. She's only got one album, so it was a relatively short set. Which is fine by me. Get in, wow 'em, and leave them wanting more. I showed up at nine too, thinking I would miss the opener. I was wrong.

As for Studio B, after being burned a couple times, I have learned that NOTHING starts there before 10pm unless it explicitly says it's an early show. Though maybe this CSS/Shout Out4/Dirty on Purpose show might start earlier. You certainly want to get there early, as it's going to be a clusterfuck getting in.

Posted by bill p | July 26, 2007 11:30 AM

bill p, thanks, that's good to know. I was worried I had missed some songs.

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2007 11:37 AM

Everyone who complained about MIA taking the stage after midnight, here's a lesson for future reference: All you had to do was call the venue and ask. That's it. I phoned up around 7:45 and the gentleman who answered was more than happy to help. Seriously, what kind of amateur would take the showtimes listed on a venue's Web site as gospel? Please. Even my grandma knows you phone beforehand. And if you can't stomach getting home at 3 a.m. when you have to be at work at 9, what the fuck are you doing in this city? Go back to Nebraska, douchebags.

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2007 11:37 AM

Hey Anon 11:37am:

Some of us douchebags that have to be to work at 9am need a little more mental awareness than it takes to ask "do you want hashbrowns with that?"

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2007 12:02 PM

mmmmm hashbrowns

MIA was awesome, i danced hard and got up early. thankfully, my job requires me to think very little. in fact i spend most of the days right here on bv. not even being sarcastic or anything here. life is good! be jealous.

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2007 12:10 PM

Battle! The Get-Up-Earlies vs. The Lay-In-Bedders!

If you want to go to late night music gigs, don't drink. 9am is fine then.

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2007 12:15 PM

My job requires plenty of mental alertness, and I saw MIA, went to bed at 3, got up at 9, and was at work by 9:30. A little more worse for the wear than usual, but nothing awful. I was more pissed about the wait and the so-so DJ than the sleep deprivation. Still a fun show though. A night like that is only something I can do in this city.

And yea, from going to Battles last weekend, I now know to (a) call Studio B and (b) expect set times at Studio B to always be later than advertised.

Posted by litigioushipster | July 26, 2007 12:26 PM

If you want to go to a late gig and have to work at 9am, just call your friendly dealer-man and score a nice satchel of blow! Then try NOT being up at 9am! HA!

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2007 12:28 PM

whatever. pelican was pretty awesome but i'm dying to hear how blitzen trapper was????

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2007 12:33 PM

wow. way to make it sound like she was late when she actually wasnt at all, "pitchfork".

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2007 1:02 PM

Yeah, Studio B shows always start later than most. Usually I don't mind because they have pretty good DJs and the crowd dances, so it's not like waiting around for a band. Unfortunately this wasn't really the case last night. I don't know if it was because the crowd was different, or that it was a weeknight, or just that the DJ was kinda dull (yet ADD-afflicted), but it felt more like waiting. M.I.A was kind of a snooze for me, though it got better at the end.

Posted by Anonymous | July 26, 2007 1:53 PM

What was the worst about last night wasn't waiting, it was DJ "Every Famous Song Ever", Paul Simon!?!?, give me a break., followed by a whole-heartedly boring performance from M.I.A. Her new shit makes me want to take a nap.

Posted by patrick | July 26, 2007 3:14 PM

Not to change the subject, but Blitzen Trapper, holy cats! They've got sand. A fantastic, even inspiring show.
