Yellow Fever

At some point I asked, "What ever happened to the girl in Voxtrot?" And it was then that I found out that Jennifer Moore had dropped out of the band, and that she was in a different band called Yellow Fever - also from Austin, and Austin is where the next BrooklynVegan (& friends) concerts will be, and at those shows you'll be able to see Yellow Fever, Sparrow House (another Voxtrot-related project from Austin), and all of the artists whose MP3s are available above as downloads.

Little Steven playing MSG, comments on Hilly Kristal

"Losing CBGB meant it was only a matter of time before Hilly followed" said Van Zandt "It was his whole life. He created the space to allow Indie Rock, Pop Art Rock, and Punk to be born. There would be no Ramones without Hilly Kristal. And who would want to live in a world without them? He loved this city and in the end, the city spit in his face."Catch long-time CBGB supporter Steven Van Zandt (and friends) when he goes on a tour that includes two stops at NYC's MSG in October (during CMJ actually).
Tommy Ramone (seen pictured above with Hilly & Stevie) has a bunch of shows coming up (with his bluegrass band Uncle Monk).

ACL, tapings & Brooklyn Vegan afterparties (sort of)
This September I'll be returning to Austin for my first-ever visit to the annual three-day Austin City Limits Festival (see previous post for talk of the lineup). While I'm there, I also hope to catch at least one episode-taping for the 33rd season of the associated PBS series with the same name (Austin City Limits). Arcade Fire, Crowded House, Wilco, Bloc Party, Regina Spektor, and Lucinda Williams will all be there to play the festival, and to tape a show.
Then there are the afterparties - official and unofficial. Official afterparties (or aftershows as they call them) feature many of the same bands playing the festival. They happen at night at one of the various venues around Austin - Stubb's, La Zona Rosa, The Parish, Emo's and Antone's to be exact. Anyone can buy tickets to the aftershows. They've got Spoon, The White Stripes (sold out), Common, Blonde Redhead, The National, etc..
I actually know very little about the unofficial afterparties, except that I helped put one together. It was a team effort between myself and the "Hot Freaks" otherwise known as an aquarium drunkard, la blogothèque, chromewaves, gorilla vs bear, my old kentucky blog, and you ain't no picasso. This group of 'Hot Freaks' worked together before - at SXSW. For ACL they asked if I felt like getting freaky, I said 'yes', and the rest is history.
Our parties take place at the Mohawk and at the adjoining Club Deville, on both Friday and Saturday after ACL. The shows are FREE (w/ some RSVP thing that's going to be available after Labor Day), and all of our artists are NOT also playing ACL. We have Art Brut, Grizzly Bear, St. Vincent, The Rosebuds, Yellow Fever, Sparrow House (Jared from Voxtrot), and more. More details below....
The Rosebuds @ BOwery Ballroom, NYC (MORE)

These shows are also in conjunction with (sponsored by) Dell Lounge. Dell Lounge sponsors a stage at ACL, an ACL-related Battle of the Bands, and Dell Lounge will be the website where people can stream some of the ACL Festival performaces as they happen. This is also their party....

Nina Nastasia & Jim White - 2007 Tour Dates & MP3
DOWNLOAD: Nina Nastasia & Jim White - I Write Down Lists (MP3)
"Nina Nastasia & Jim White will be touring in October in support of their new album, You Follow Me, out now on FatCat. This is Nina Nastasia & Jim White's first tour as a duo."
Stripped of finery, You Follow Me is Nastasia's purest, most assured work yet, a raw acoustic set that sweeps sentiment out of dusty corners and slips into sudden whispers as White frisks around and across her stark chords. And when Nastasia's voice rises from a delicate mumble to a piercing cry, it's enough to make hearts follow suit. [The Onion]Tour Dates below...

Bad Brains comment on Hilly Kristal, tour
Though I posted some from the same day, I never published the two photos in this post before...
Bad Brains & CBGB

I asked Bad Brains' record label if Bad Brains wanted to say anything about Hilly Kristal. Here's what they said:
"The Brains didn't go to college... CBGB's was our university. Hilly was our head master. And although the music died back in the 50's with Holly and Richie...the punk lives with Hilly, Joey, Stiv and CB's. Forever is the spirit of Hilly and his punk rock. Thanks Hilly, we will all ways remember you as the don of punk and the king of the bowery...that serious looking nice guy....Jah lives... the Bad Brains."

Music Hall of Williamsburg & other venues (NY Times again)

It’s the kind of thing you might expect to see in a multimillion-dollar concert hall in Berlin or Los Angeles, not in a rock club in a former mayonnaise plant in Brooklyn: a sloped ceiling incorporating sophisticated acoustical design, made up of eight curved segments that are suspended from the roof on rubber mounts.Other key points in the article. But there it is at the Music Hall of Williamsburg, the latest development in a building spree that has radically changed the live-music landscape of New York over the last few years. Set to open on Tuesday with a concert by Patti Smith, the Music Hall, which holds 550 people....[NY Times]
- The Music Hall is very much modeled after Bowery Ballroom w/ no pillars to block your view.
- The Gramercy Theatre is still being fixed up by Live Nation.
- Peter Shapiro, who owned Wetlands, the TriBeCa rock and jam-band club that closed in 2001, is planning next spring to open Brooklyn Bowl, a 20,000-square-foot combination bowling alley and performance space in Williamsburg.
- Andrew W. K. is looking to open a club at 100 Lafayette Street, just below Canal Street

Sonic Youth (Thurston Moore) regrets not breaking up

In the last few years, Moore has watched as contemporaries including Pixies and Dinosaur Jr. reunited to great acclaim and substantial financial rewards. And the 49-year-old admits he sometimes wonders how much money a Sonic Youth reunion tour would have made. He says, "The Pixies reunion was a real success, and Dinosaur Jr. seems like a big success, and both those bands play as good as they ever did. Mission Of Burma blew my mind when they came back. "But a band like us never did break up. Which was to our own detriment. "What would have happened if we did break up after (classic 1988 double album) Daydream Nation - or even after (1990's) Dirty - and had gotten back together two years ago? "You'd be interviewing me at the Chateau Marmont as I'm waiting for my limousine. We probably would have made so much money. "This was our biggest career faux-pas - not breaking up." [contactmusic]Thurston Moore's new solo (still just a side project) album comes out on Sept. 18th. More info, and solo tour dates, HERE.

MARK OLSON reunites w/ Gary Louris in MN, playing NYC TONIGHT (Win Tix)
Jayhawks' Gary Louris & Mark Olson @ 400 Bar, MN - Aug 18, 2007 (CRED)

The crowd seemed to double after Louris took to the stage, and as the bar filled up and pressed forward the band launched into the Jayhawks song “Pray for Me.” Olson and Louris's vocals collided so perfectly that it was impossible to tell who was singing which part, and for a moment I stopped being jealous of all the lucky jerks who got to see the original Jayhawks lineup play together many years ago and reveled in the beauty of the two men performing together. [Reveille Magazine]Gary won't be at Bowery Ballroom tonight (Aug 30), but Mark will be. Tickets are still on sale, and I have a pair to give away to someone who emails me at BVCONTESTS@HOTMAIL.COM (subject: Olson), and tells me they want to go. Winner will be picked at random. ¡Forward, Russia's new songs to have actual ¡titles!
News from a band we haven't heard from in a while: "¡Forward, Russia! returned to the UK last week, after spending two and a half months in Seattle recording their eagerly anticipated second album." Wow, in the U.S. for two and a half months? Continued below....
The follow up to their UK chart-busting debut, Give Me a Wall, is scheduled for release in the early months of 2008. The album, entitled Life Processes, was recorded at various studios in Seattle and produced by Matt Bayles, best known for his work on the most recent Mastodon album, along with the Blood Brothers and Isis. The band unveiled one song from the album recently during an interview on Seattle’s KEXP radio station. In a departure from their earlier work, ¡Forward, Russia! have revealed that all songs from Life Processes will have actual titles, instead of numbers, as previously had been the case. Full details of the track listing will be released shortly, though it has been confirmed that their most recent UK single Don’t Be a Doctor, will not be included on the album. After shows this past weekend at the Leeds Festival & London's Get Loaded in the Park, the band have lined up a further number of British dates where they plan to preview tracks from the new record, including Oxford’s Truck Festival, which had been postponed due to inclement weather. The band were unable to play the original dates due to their US recording commitments. Full details of the more extensive UK tour the Leeds' combo has planned for later in the year should be available shortly. Confirmed dates September 8 MILTON KEYNES, Mad Dogs & Englishmen Festival September 22 OXFORD, Truck Festival November 24 SKEGNESS, The Big ReunionPreviously * more Forward Russia

VIDEOs: Okkervil River - Our Life Is Not A Movie Or Maybe (official & on Conan) ++ updated Tour Dates
DOWNLOAD: Okkervil River - Our Life Is Not A Movie Or Maybe (MP3)

I love this song, but after Ryan and I played it on the radio today I was saying how I don't necessarily feel as strongly as others about about the whole album. I like it - its just not one of my absolute favorites of the year....
"Our Life is Not a Movie or Maybe," the first video for Austin, Texas-based Okkervil River's The Stage Names, was directed by Margaret Brown, whose acclaimed documentary about Townes Van Zandt, Be Here to Love Me, was released theatrically in 2005 by Palm Pictures. Director Jonathan Demme hailed Be Here to Love Me as "a thrilling piece of pure cinema," adding that Brown "has moved the whole 'possibilities of film' thing a big leap forward, especially as regards the blending of film and music, image, sound and thought. "The New York Times' Stephen Holden called Be Here to Love Me "Impressive! A tender, impressionistic film biography," while Anthony Lane of the New Yorker elaborated that Brown conceived her movie, she says, to be "vinyl, not CD," and the ride of it does indeed deliver a rough-edged truth."Okkervil River - 2007 Tour Dates

Sigur Ros - new DVD, CD & NYC show
DOWNLOAD: Sigur Ros - untitled #8 (a.k.a. popplagið / the pop song) (MP3)

You already heard of this band called Sigur Ros, and you know about the NYC show, but maybe you didn't hear all about the new Heima DVD and Hvarf / Heim Double CD....
Sigur Rós Sigur Rós Heima DVD Hvarf / Heim Double CD Out November 6 Exclusive Advance Screening September 14 in Akureyri, IcelandSigur Rós have confirmed a November 6 street date for two separate but related releases: a DVD called Heima and a double CD set titled Hvarf / Heim. Both will be issued in the U.S. on the XL label.
Heima-which translates as both "At Home" and "Homeland"-- chronicles a series of free concerts Sigur Rós played in their native Iceland over the course of summer 2006. Combining both the biggest and smallest shows of their career, the entire tour was filmed, and now provides a unique insight into one of the world's most fascinating and inscrutable bands captured live while exploring their natural habitat like never before. The film is currently being edited by Nick Fenton with direction from the Oscar-nominated Dean DeBlois.
The culmination of more than a year spent promoting their hugely successful Takk... album around the world, the Icelandic tour was free to all-comers and went largely unannounced. Playing in deserted fish factories, outsider art follies, far-flung community halls, sylvan fields, darkened caves and the huge horseshoe-shaped Asbyrgi canyon (formed, legend has it, by the hoofprint of Odin's six-legged horse Sleipnir), the band reached an entirely new spectrum of the Icelandic population; young and old, ardent and merely quizzical, entirely by word-of-mouth.
Material from all four of the band's albums is featured, including many rare and notable moments. Among these are a heart-stopping rendition of the previously unreleased 'Guitardjamm', filmed inside a derelict herring oil tank in the far West Fjords; a windblown, one-mic recording of 'Vaka', shot at a dam protest camp subsequently drowned by rising water; and first time acoustic versions of such rare live beauties as 'Staralfur', 'Agaetis Byrjun' and 'Von'.
The Hvarf / Heim CD is made up primarily of two EPs. The title of the first, Hvarf, translates appropriately as "disappeared," as its five tracks are new recordings of lost songs from various points in Sigur Ros's history. The first three, 'Salka,' 'Hljomalind' and 'I Gaer,' were never released either because they were not recorded, or because they were recorded and then not included on a finished album. The fourth and fifth, 'Von' and perennial live favorite 'Hafsol' are radical and complete reimaginings of songs from the band's first album, the original versions of which were recorded by the band's Jonsi Birgisson and Georg Holm with drummer Agust Gunnarsson prior to Kjartan Sveinsson and Orri Dyrason joining the band.
An alternative translation of "Hvarf" is "haven," which ties into the title of the second portion of this release, Heim, or "home." Heim's six tracks are live acoustic versions of songs from all four Sigur Ros studio albums recorded in Iceland either during the band's summer 2006 tour or early this spring. The unplugged scenario had been pretty much imposed on the band, there being no power at some of the locations. Four of the songs here ('Untitled 1,' 'Unititled 3,' 'Agaetis Byrjun' (never performed live before this last summer) and 'Heysatan') were played acoustically on the road during the summer tour, with the remaining 'Staralfur' and 'Von,' being first interpreted for a protest concert against a planned road development next to the band's studio in the artistic community of Alafoss, back in February 2007
There will be an exclusive screening of Heima Sept. 14 in Akureyri, Iceland, which will be followed by the film's official premiere on Sept. 27 in Reykjavik on the opening night of the Icelandic International Film Festival which runs from Sep 27 - Oct 7.

backstage pics from Letterman & McCarren Pool set times
Feist instructs the troops

One of the indiest shows of the summer is going down at McCarren Pool in Brooklyn tonight (Aug 29, 2007). The weather is beautiful. Feist is headlining, and here's a re-post of something I got back when Grizzly Bear was added to the show:
Please note that doors will now open at 5PM one hour earlier than originally announced to allow for Grizzly Bear’s performance which will begin at 6:15. Also appearing with Feist is Broken Social Scene (performing Kevin Drew's "Spirit If...").The pics in this post were taken (not by me) backstage at the David Letterman show Monday. More below...

Hilly Kristal on CBGB's final night - Oct 15, 2006

NEW YORK, Aug. 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- It is with deep sadness and regret that we inform you of the death of Hilly Kristal, who died on Tuesday, August 28, 2007 from complications from Lung Cancer. Kristal, 75, founded the legendary rock club CBGB and ran the club for 33 years. A singer and songwriter himself, Kristal opened the club to showcase "Country Bluegrass and Blues"; instead the club became a breeding ground for Punk rock. Among the many acts that called CBGB home were Blondie, the Talking Heads, Television, Living Color, Patti Smith and the Ramones. The club closed in October 2006, but CBGB continues, with a retail store in New York City and worldwide merchandise sales; in addition, there currently are plans to open new CBGB clubs in several locations. Kristal is survived by his daughter, Lisa Kristal Burgman, son, Mark Dana Kristal, son-in-law Ger Burgman, grandchildren Jenny and Adam Burgman, CBGB, and the thousands of artists and musicians who played the club. A private memorial service is planned. A public memorial will be held at a later date. Contributions in Hilly's honor may be made in his name to the American Cancer Society or to the Hilly Kristal Foundation for Musicians and Artists (168 Second Avenue, PMB 207, New York, NY 10003).Hilly Kristal @ CMJ 2006
