Jukebox the Ghost @ After the Jump @ Studio B, NYC - Aug 25, 2007

Though I wasn't personally involved with this weekend's After the Jump festival, BV dance writer David Bruno ("Slap You in Public") & BV hip hop writer Undisputed Wes ("Sit Down Stand Up"), were. And though I only personally made it to the Friday pre-festival roof party, impartial BV-correspodent Filthy McMuffin was in attendance at the daytime portion on Saturday, and he said "Jukebox the Ghost and Goes Cube were the best". He left before Spectrum (the daytime headliner) though. How were they?

There are photos of basically every band (and DJ) on Metromix New York.

My tops picks from the Day stage were Jukebox The Ghost and Locksley (covering the White Stripes is ambitious...and done with the perfect attitude. Pass the tambourine!
And Ra Ra Riot was boss.

Locksley were HORRIBLE

Did people actually go? The lineup was very underwhelming. Too nice of a day as well.

Golem was excellent, Ra Ra Riot was good. Spectrum absolutely emptied the venue. By the time he was done 15 people remained.
Don't know if anyone came back for the night show.

Jukebox the Ghost were by far the best, as usual. I love them more every time I see them. Thank goodness they have a sweet residency coming up at Piano's (Sept 9th, 14th and 21st). Yay, Jukebox! Ra Ra Riot, Locksley and Golem were all absolutely fun, each with a really unique vibe. Once you got past the disorienting feeling of walking from bright bright sunlight into the pitch black of the venue, it was an excellent way to spend the afternoon. Kudos to all those involved!

Spectrum was fucking loud. The first two songs were horrible and then it got better. Kind of a weird time for live music indoors.

FREE BLOOD

i don't think standing outside all day in the 90+ degree heat would have made for a very good afternoon.

"i don't think standing outside all day in the 90+ degree heat would have made for a very good afternoon. "
What about in the nude?

Please tell me Anon 2:49 isn't Darren Mabee.

FREE BLOOD killed it. I did't see any of the other bands though.

i only stuck around for locksley and they were absolutely kickass.

Jukebox the Ghost were pretty damn fun... though it was super sweaty in that little room, they kicked ass. Definitely a band I'm looking forward to seeing more of...
Golem was also one of the most fun bands I've seen in a long time... and Ra Ra Riot, as always, had an incredible set.
What was up with Spectrum? Why? Who? What? I was bored.
Posted by Anonymous | August 27, 2007 4:23 PM
I saw Spectrum at Midway on Saturday. I too was bored, mainly with the Jim Morrison-esque poetics.... "walking and falllling...". They also had major sound issues there with a horrible buzz in the monitors. I don't know what my expections were for this, but they certainly weren't met. I guess that is the problem with expectations. I was however under the impression that this was a "band", not Kember and mate electronics.

What was up with the Midway show? Was it crowded? I thought he was awful and boring at After the Jump. I can't imagine people paying to see him even if he thinks he is legendary.

Wasn't crowded at all, I'd guess somewhere around 75 people. Like I said, I was expecting something different. The descriptions I read noted a 'band' and made reference to it being more 'rock' oriented as well as spanning/covering the works of his other projects. I love Spacemen 3 so I was kind of hoping for a fuller and more climactic sound. To me the show was flat and very doped out. The sound issues made it that much worse. My friend commented that he felt like it actually pulled energy out of you which I found interesting and true.
I'd check out his other projects in the future but I wouldn't see Spectrum again.
