Clipse & Vampire Weekend playing Columbia Saturday

ClipseConcert on the steps discolosed

People who know about these things most likely already know this, but for those who don't follow obscure music blogs: Saturday's Concert (2:00 PM, Low plaza) will be headlined by none other than Clipse, just back from a European tour and off the next day to the west coast.....Opening for Clipse will be Columbia grads Vampire Weekend...[the Bwog]
The show is free for the general public - unless it rains - then it gets moved inside where they check for student IDs. Vampire Weekend recently signed a record deal. More VW tour dates, here, and more info on who they're playing with in Brooklyn, here.

Does anyone else find it a little strange that a crack dealer has been chosen to play a concert for a bunch of ivy leaguers?

"Even Adored By Norwegian Women, Blond Hair And Blue Eyes, I'm Gettin' Back With A Vengence.

Whip It Like They Want Me All Attached To The Kitten
And They Wonder In These Raps If I'm Kiddin.."

...says Mr. Clipse. How many rich lil "college hos" do you think Clipse will bag after this concert? HAHA, all his boasts about being rich as fuck, then he's gonna go bang some JAP whose yearly rent is more than the GNP of a small african nation.

"Four of ya Hummers wrapped round my neck, bitch" should be changed to "4 years of yr tuition wrapped round my neck, bitch"....

rich white people are soo funny.

Clipse is cool, I love his records and mixtapes. He's one of the best rappers around, no doubt.

But shouldn't Columbia students be a little more politically and morally aware? Do they not listen to his lyrics? The dude is a CRACK DEALER...he sells drugs to his own people that cause them to kill one another. He makes jokes about killing people, and rich white kids laugh at 'em while they buy $200 dollar jeans at Urban Outfitters. Yeah, the guy is "telling his story of life in the 'hood", blah blah blah....but that shit shouldn't be ENTERTAINING ivy-league students, they should be studying it in cultural studies classes.

Would those same rich white kids be laughing at a rapper who talks about how much fun it is to kill kids in Iraq? This makes no sense, and Columbia is pretty fucking pathetic to be catering to the lowest common denominator in this way.

to the above poster:

1. The Clipse are a group comprised of two brothers, Malice and Pusha-T. That alone tells me you have no clue about their music.

2. I think the fact that the Ivy League students are listening to the Clipse is wonderful. You said that they should be learning about the hood from the mouths of rappers, but instead the mouths of college professors. What cultural studies course have you taken that brings a light to how drugs have affected culture within the Black community?

While I will agree that today's rappers do glorify drug culture, I won't say that the Clipse are any of those rappers. I am a huge Clipse fan, and while there is a bravado about the fact they have sold drugs, this bravado is an accurate - to the best of my knowledge - reflection of their lifestyle. Music is art and art is a reflection of how one views their world.

I was at the show yesterday, and these rich white kids you claimed were laughing, weren't. While they may not have been able to fully understand the world that the Clipse speak about, they fully embraced their music. And as Ivy Leaguers, they were intelligent enough to comprehend the truth in it.

how do you guys think the columbia kids stay awake studying?

"this bravado is an accurate reflection of their lifestyle. Music is art and art is a reflection of how one views their world."

So is the bravado in their art a reflection of their life, or a reflection of the way they view their life? There's a difference between the two, you know.

I can't answer that. I'm not them.

Let's not forget that Ivy League does not necessarily equal "smart". It DOES, in most cases, equal "rich". And, naturally, "rich", in most cases, equals "lacking comprehension or empathy for the lives of those who did not attend a private and/or wealthy suburban school that landed them in Columbia".
