Dan Deacon DVD & scavenger hunt in NYC w/ Ra Ra Riot
Dan Deacon on a barge in Manchester - Aug 10, 2007 (CRED)

NY Magazine's latest unresistable *hip* event (the last one was the Band of Horses art auction) happens on September 2nd. They describe it like this:
Gather your most ruthlessly resourceful gang together to see if you can find your way to the hidden-away parts of the city and win somewhat interesting prizes. Do you know where to find boiled peanuts in New York City? Where is the original Original Ray's Pizza? Can you figure out how to-- Britney Spears style-- get married and divorced in the same day? We're going to bring you to places that you never knew existed. It'll be totes fun, we promise. The teams will be in competition to win a prize, or a few of them. Then of course, we'll reward those sore losers who couldn't claim their prize with the ultimate after party. That afterparty features performances by none other than Dan Deacon, and one by Ra Ra Riot. The grand prize winner also gets $1000, and there's open bar all night long. The scavenger hunt starts at 2:00 pm in McCarren Park, but the show is not at McCarren Pool - secret Brooklyn party location will be given out that day. Tickets are on sale now, AND I have one pair to give away to someone who emails BVCONTESTS@HOTMAIL.COM (subject: scavenger), and tells me what color shirt Dan wore while performing at the Virgin Festival in Baltimore this year.
In other news,
Dan Deacon and Jimmy Joe Roche are currently putting the final touches on their collaborative Ultimate Reality DVD which will see a Winter release via Carpark, Deacon's current label. Dan Deacon will be touring this Sept. and Oct. - most dates are with Girl Talk.Tickets are still on sale for the show September 15th at Webster Hall.
Ultimate Reality DVD clips, below...
A mandala projected from the third eye of suburban back yards, cracked drive ways, and dusty VCR's. The wizards of Baltimore and Wham City deal powerful magic, we'll need it soon, the dawn of this post-postmodern age is upon us." - J. RocheTRUE LIES and CONAN psychedelic subversive conceptual Mash-Up
Ultimate Reality is a collaborative performance by Dan Deacon and Jimmy Joe Roche that combines an intense musical composition for electronics and two live drummers (from the bands Ponytail and Video Hippos) with a psychedelic montage of Arnold Schwarzenegger films that is projected at a monumental scale. The live energy of the performance with the popular content of the projection has allowed the piece to freely move between art and music venues and grant it a wide audience of appreciation. The forty minute music composition, written by Dan Deacon, blasts from three sets of loudspeakers during performance.
Driving and cinematic, the electronic piece is accompanied by two drummers who pound a marching rhythm. The footage was appropriated by Jimmy from Schwarzenegger classics such as Terminator 2 and Total Recall to accompany the composition for Ultimate Reality. Jimmy has transformed the violent struggles of these films into a mesmerizing sequence of fantastic images where popular science fiction icons seep in and out of mirrored layers of kaleidoscopic color.
Dan and Jimmy are both Baltimore-based artists who have worked together for the past five years. Ultimate Reality represents their latest collaboration produced in their current residency at Wham City. The performance premiered at Wham City during Baltimore's Whartscape Festival in July 2006, and has since been shown at Anthology Film Archives in New York City in September 2006. It is scheduled to be shown at Corcoran Gallery in DC in November 2006 as a part of the Experimental Media Series, curated by Peggy Parsons and Paul Roth. and at The Walters Museum of Art in Baltimore in February 2007.

the queen's hideaway gives each table a bowl of boiled peanuts, though you don.t actually buy them. a lot of places in chinatown sell them as well.

where does this go on the approval matrix??
I'm going to say high lowbrow (that is, close to zero) and barely on the approval side. On the disapproval side I would put a dot (at a point = the x axis mark of the previous dot) commenting on the return of loud neon colours tied to Dan Deacon.
