Patti Smith, I mean Feist

This show happened at McCarren Pool in Brooklyn on Wednesday, August 29, 2007. BSS played Boston the night before. They all played Letterman the night before that. And they all played Beacon Theatre the night before that night.

BV you have a tie with Kevin D. for hottest boy on the block
Posted by pretty girl | August 30, 2007 12:53 AM
Grizzly Bear is both way better and hotter than Kevin D. But everyone was pretty fun tonight. Such perfect weather and I love Feist oh so much I want her to have my babies.

it's a joke to say broken social scene was there. just because there are members of the defunct band doesn't mean it's still bss. kevin drew played his new shit. and it should have been billed the whole time as kevin drew. it would've been a letdown to come to see bss and then get that. it wasn't bad, but i just don't see why it was billed as bss when it was kevin drew.

kevin drew is an egomaniac whos abusing the great name of BSS to support his new shit. im not even in the city right now but this just frustrates me a lot. hear hear.

This blog says it pretty well:
They don't really sound very much like Broken Social Scene, though, even when they broke from Kevin's solo stuff and, uh, "covered" BSS tunes.
I worry Kevin is falling into the trap Calexico did with Garden Ruin -- he's trying very hard to do something different than what he's done before, which is commendable. Except that what he did before, with BBS, was distinctive and unusual and cool, and what he's doing now just sounds listless and generic. And also a bit sloppy... but like I said, I think it's only their second gig playing this stuff, so that's at least somewhat forgivable -- even if Kevin did need his bandmate to hold up the lyrics sheet for him at one point.
-----
I don't think kevin drew was bad by any means, however it's not BSS.

well said samantha.

it was a lovely night. the stage looked real pretty. i had one of those i love my neighborhood moments. now squabbling from a desk in midtown...Feist and her group are as good as anything...springstein or something.

I was there. 'Twas a great show. Grizzly Bear killed it. I really wish that they had played longer, it was such a short set. "On a Neck, On a Spit" was a great closer though. Those boys can sing, alright.
Kevin Drew was ok. Not bad, but not great either.
Feist was great. She asked the audience members to write down possible names for her new guitar and throw them on stage in paper airplane form. She kept thanking the crowd and recounting stories to us of how she has been playing New York for over ten years. She really did seem sincere and grateful and it was pretty touching. She did a good job with balancing her slower songs with her more uptempo ones. The only thing that was a tad disappointing was that she didn't play songs that I saw last year in Central Park such as "Inside and Out," and "The Buildup" which she wrote with Kings of Convenience. But that is just me being a tad fussy.
Overall a great show from my rock and roll goddess and one of the best singers in the world. If only I were Kevin Drew.

this was my first time at the Pool and first show upon moving to NYC. I had a blast! I wasn't sure how Grizzly Bear would translate live, but they sounded fantastic. And Feist was much more rocking live than expected. good times.

didn't get there until Feist went on, but caught the other 2 at the bookeaters the other night. she was great, good times all around.
Had no idea when I saw BSS 4 years ago @ Great American Music Hall that it would evolve into this. Glad all these fine folks are making mad bank.

i think the setlist above is missing "the park"
Posted by eddy | August 30, 2007 11:01 AM
@eddy
you're right, i forgot to put down "the park." it came after "my moon my man." thanks for the correction.

We're now past the show last nite and yet people are still complaining about this whole "if it's Kevin Drew playing his own songs, then can we call it Broken Social Scene?" Who gives a sh*t? If you weren't at the show then why do you care? ("I'm not even in the city but.." Samantha). The tickets read "Broken Social Scene presents Kevin Drew's 'Spirit If...'" BV's first post about this show (on June 12th) clearly stated that it would be a performance of Kevin Drew's 'Spirit If...'. And here's a blurb from the official press release announcing the live shows in support of 'Spirit If...' :
This fall Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning, Justin Peroff, along with new members will commence the "BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE PERFORMS" touring series. They will tour select songs from this album and others from this series.
Besides, who really thought that BSS (in their traditional lineup) would be on a bill such as this and NOT headline? I just don't remember them playing as an opener in the US recently (except maybe a show in LA opening for Bloc Party in '06?? is that right?). I don't know, it just seems odd that people would actually be mislead.
We're all dumber for debating this meaningless issue, but I just had to throw my two-cents in. The show last nite was solid throughout.

wait, is that first comment true?

Does anyone know where to find a recording of Leisure Suite from last night's show? That version was great.
Posted by Anonymous | August 30, 2007 12:30 PM
J: They also opened for Belle & Sebastian in Maryland, not that it's particularly important.
I don't see a big issue with using Broken Social Scene's name; if anyone has the right, it's Kevin Drew. Also, I was under the impression that people understood it meant members of, as that had been clarified in the past. "Broken Social Scene" and "Broken Social Scene Presents Kevin Drew" are obviously different things. Will everyone care so much when it's Brendan's turn?
Posted by Katherine | August 30, 2007 12:47 PM
brendon's turn is coming up in the next few months - they played one of his (absolutely fucking terrible) songs last night.

grizzly bear has gotten so much better live lately
also feist was amazing...
Posted by Anonymous | August 30, 2007 1:42 PM
yeah brendan canning and more members are a doing a "presents" album so fuck off about kevin drew. he was just the first.
Posted by Anonymous | August 30, 2007 1:43 PM
-j - i dont think she was complaining that people were mislead, of course we knew what to expect, the complaing is with having that "Broken Social Thing presents" in the first place. Its just silly and I never heard of such a thing. Imagine "Sonic Youth presents Thurston Moore". Its just dumb dumb dumb.
Posted by Anonymous | August 30, 2007 2:14 PM
almost as dumb as: Kevin "I am in Broken Social Scene" Drew
Posted by Anonymous | August 30, 2007 2:20 PM
guys they're just wu-tanging it. I guess all the ire is because it's "indie" music and not capitalist -fueled hip hop. Indie posturing has got to go, goo d music comes from many different places.

reading these comments was 6 minutes of my life that i'll never get back. thanks a lot. losers.

Don't forget that Broken Social Scene is a collective. The new album is great, once we can see the "Presents" series as a whole, it'll make a lot more sense. I was at the warm-up show in Cambridge and I thought that shit was unbelievable. It sounded a little different because of the abbreviated line-up, but the love and energy were just as high as any other BSS show I'd been to; and that's what's important.

i found kevin drew to be very lacklustre. Loved both Grizzly Bear and Feist. Surprisingly more than I thought I would on both fronts.
Posted by Anonymous | August 30, 2007 9:00 PM
Did anyone else think intuition with the crowd singing was absolutely fantastic?
Posted by Wiz | August 31, 2007 5:34 AM
what's the capacity of the pool? i wasn't expecting this show to sell out and yet, apparently, it did.
Posted by woj | August 31, 2007 10:52 PM
anyone remember the first track that grizzly bear played?
