CMJ

As you know, Spoon is playing Roseland, UNKLE is playing Webster Hall, Rodrigo y Gabriela is playing Roseland, Justice (who I saw today at Oya - details coming later) is playing Webster Hall, and I was wondering why the Brunettes didn't have a NYC date listed yet. The 2007 CMJ Music Marathon runs from October 16-20 in NYC. All the shows I mentioned are CMJ ones, and all the bands listed below are playing CMJ too....

Spoon
UNKLE
Justice
British Sea Power
Mates Of State
Coheed And Cambria
Rodrigo Y Gabriela
Xiu Xiu
Dan Deacon
Del Tha Funkee Homosapien
Dirtbombs
Mute Math

uh-not-so-good.

Posted by Anonymous | August 9, 2007 6:18 PM

Because The Brunettes suck??

Posted by Anonymous | August 9, 2007 6:32 PM

Please let it get better

Posted by Anonymous | August 9, 2007 6:33 PM

Does anyone know what time Justice is playing?

Posted by Anonymous | August 9, 2007 7:02 PM

Devin the Dude AND The Dirtbombs?!?!?!? I thought that Old Navy gift certificate I got from my mom was awesome, but this is totally like so much better!!!!

Posted by chris | August 9, 2007 9:25 PM

1990s....whoot!

Posted by Anonymous | August 9, 2007 9:28 PM

CMJ Is totally irrelevant these days I have to say. Haven't cared about this pub in say, oh 15 years? It'll be nice to see them disappear.

Posted by Anonymous | August 9, 2007 9:42 PM

Eduardo 6:14 knows what's up.

Posted by Anonymous | August 9, 2007 10:01 PM

The only band I care about seeing is Jesu. I heard some crappy things about their live shows last year, but Im just going to assume it was because of their immigration shit, they came in mid tour, no time to practice with the Intronaut drummer, etc, etc.

Posted by Anonymous | August 9, 2007 10:41 PM

delays are also playing

Posted by Anonymous | August 9, 2007 11:25 PM

Weak. There are better shows in NYC when CMJ is not going on! They should move it to another city where they don't have tons of music all the time.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2007 12:24 AM

You guys are dicks, haha. There really isn't that much hipster-bait singer-songwriter business on here, just some good dance-rock and good straightforward rock bands. I'll be there having a grand old time, especially if you're not.

Posted by G3K | August 10, 2007 12:29 AM

people
please face the facts. cmj music festival in nyc has been pretty awful the past few years. thursday august 9ths lineup of shows in the nyc area was probably better than what cmj will end up with and i don't even like the hold steady....

Posted by cmgay | August 10, 2007 12:52 AM

average weekend free shows are about 3 times better than the entire line-up here. and most of those bands have been around here already earlier this year, or just last month. makes the whole exercise pretty much irrelavent. no sane/non-industry person is spending big money for a badge, obviously.

Posted by nyc noise fan | August 10, 2007 1:06 AM

stfu guys get over yourself...you arent cool for saying the line-up sucks

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2007 1:34 AM

packaged crap. hardly anything interesting there.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2007 2:15 AM

im sorry but christian dance rock (justice) is gay. take ecstacy and go to a rave. oh wait..i did that in 1995.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2007 7:54 AM

you realize this is 30 of about 800 bands they are going to announce, right?

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2007 9:14 AM

eh, id like to see no age.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2007 9:27 AM

Mickey Motherfucking Hart. YEAH!

Posted by njj,a | August 10, 2007 9:27 AM

where id the funky homosapien playing...

where id the funky homosapien playing...

Posted by george | August 10, 2007 9:50 AM

underwhelming

Posted by matt | August 10, 2007 10:06 AM

who cares. cmj shows are a bitch to get into for normal people anyway, and frequently the best bands are on at absurd hours.. ill consider it my weekend off from seeing live music for a change... i mean have any of these badns not played NYC this year, more than once in many cases? kinda glad nothings jumping out at me in the lineup so far

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2007 10:09 AM

So is Brooklynvegan the new home for whiners? God, it seems like people here complain about everything...free shows, partial information, etc.

Posted by Anonymous | August 10, 2007 10:15 AM

no age rules

Posted by mat | August 10, 2007 10:20 AM

you do realize that this is the FIRST round of bands that they have announced, right?

what i'm wondering is why you would fork over the $500 unless you were an industry person?

For the non-industry fan, getting lots of bands in the same week so you'll invariably miss some of your favorites until their next time through NYC kind of sucks.

Posted by Devin | August 10, 2007 2:05 PM

PUT CMJ TO BED, FOREVER.

IRRELEVANT

IRRELEVANT

IRRELEVANT

Posted by ajak | August 10, 2007 2:38 PM

Agreed, CMJ is RIP in my opinion. Their staff should consider future employment elsewhere. It'll be a pleasure to see this rag sink once and for all.

Posted by Doris | August 11, 2007 1:57 PM

Well... Dan Deacon, Xiu Xiu, and Crystal Castles are great... that's about it.
Last year was better, to some extent... they had O'Death!

Posted by Corey | August 11, 2007 3:38 PM

Sorry there's no boring folk or singer-songwriter bullsh**. for those of us who enjoy good, fun music, No Age, Justice, SMD, Chromeo, Crystal Castles, A-Trak, Dan Deacon, MSTRKRFT, and Kavinsky are gonna tear it up.

it would be great if there was a single blog out there that didn't get down on its knees for boring college rock crap.

Posted by Anonymous | August 11, 2007 10:33 PM

@Anon 10:33

No one is stopping you from starting a blog about the music you love, this is Web 2.0 after all and you're still Time's reigning person of the year.

I think most people are more irritated by how CMJ is run than by the bands that actually play it.

Posted by Devin | August 11, 2007 10:41 PM

Coheed and Cambria is a good time.

They unfortunately tend to get lumped together with some bad bands.

Posted by Anonymous | August 12, 2007 12:05 AM

the free shows are always the ones that matter anyway. and those won't get announced until october.

Posted by Anonymous | August 12, 2007 2:50 AM

every year it's the same. The smaller bands commit, and the bigger bands get added to the lineup later.

Posted by Anonymous | August 12, 2007 6:25 AM

12:05, that's because CoCa are totally derivative crap with one of the worst frontmen in rock. They are a horrible live band.

Posted by Anonymous | August 12, 2007 10:06 AM

alot of the bands on the lineup play todd p shows alot maybe he'll organize some show witht them that would prob be way way way way cheapier than cmj price to see em

Posted by anon | August 13, 2007 9:33 AM

Eisley?

Why?

Posted by zach | August 13, 2007 11:17 AM

Whoever said delays are playing have you heard any details?!

Posted by meredith | August 13, 2007 5:46 PM

The Cross imagery associated with Justice is not because they are a Christian Dance Act. It's stems from their biggest influence Metallica, which co-opted the Cross as part of their aesthetic just like many other metal bands back in the 80s.

Posted by Matt | August 14, 2007 1:23 PM

Matt (or anyone else who has info),

What's your source on the Justice "Cross" significance? I haven't been able to find anything. They're not obviously religious, but their Myspace page does claim their genre is "Christian / Club."

It could be a joke or even an experiment, like that South Park episode where Cartman changes the word "baby" to "Jesus" in every song and has a much larger base of fans -- all Christians. If so, the name would be quite ironic... "Justice [for all]* " ... well, all who revere the cross.

* "And Justice for all" is the translation of their myspace address: myspace.com/etjusticepourtous

Posted by Mike L | August 15, 2007 11:07 AM

Mike L, you're absolutely right that their myspace address means "...And Justice for All." This title is taken from a Metallica album of the same name. The metal influence, in aesthetic and sound, was brought to Justice by Gaspard. While Xavier more influenced by hip hop. They both were design students and decided to enter a remix contest for the Simian's "Never Be Alone." They lost the contest. It was not until Justice hosted a cheese (Raclette) party at Gaspard's mother's place that they met a fellow name Busy P. Busy P is forbidden to have a raclette party at his home due to the pungent smell so when his friend So Me mentioned the party he begged So Me to bring him along. There he heard the Justice's remix and the rest is Ed Banger history.

Posted by Matt | August 17, 2007 10:30 PM

maybe all the w(h)iners should throw a Raclette cheese party w their moms and be content at that.
