I went to Land of Talk's Citysol show (obviously), and their Summerstage one two days later (to also see Grizzly Bear & The Decemberists). It could just be because I get stressed out sometimes at my own shows, but I had trouble getting into their performance at Citysol. Summerstage sounded really, really good though.....

Cloud Cult open for Land of Talk in Toronto and Montreal

The Land of Talk EP is priceless. I pray their full-length is as amazing. Love 'em, nice people too.

Blend Bar is tiny (the music area), if it's their usual setup I cannot see more than 100 people fitting in there comfortably.

is ridgewood a decent neighborhood or is it more like paterson and newark??

the venue sure does seem nice (if a little upscale in that trying to hard, suburban sort of way

i'm always up to going somewhere different, and the place certainly seems smaller that the bowery ballroom and even the mercury lounge

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2007 1:18 PM

well suited for suburbia

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2007 1:28 PM

Is That Marc Bolan?

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2007 1:29 PM

no ridgewood is not like paterson or newark. totally upper middle class jersey suburbs

Posted by jp | August 23, 2007 1:30 PM

a possible venue in ridgewood?!

Posted by excited | August 23, 2007 1:35 PM

"is ridgewood a decent neighborhood or is it more like paterson and newark??"

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

it's one of the wealthiest towns in all of nj

I've been to Blend before and I'm shocked that they are having a show there. Anytime there has been live music it has been a jazz band or reggae cover band. The place is somewhat swank, definitely not what I would see as a burgeoning venue in Northern NJ.

Ridgewood NJ is a typical rich suburban town

Posted by hello | August 23, 2007 3:39 PM

thats funny. paterson. These are the same people who take jabs at garden state. Go to ridgewood and tell me if Jersey is a dump. I bet its a lot nice then whereever you came from.

titus andronicus is playing the blend bar as well, pitchfork recently featured them on the 'cast: http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/download/44095-titus-andronicus-fear-and-loathing-in-mahwah-new-jersey-stream

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2007 7:00 PM

who the fuck says "the 'cast"??? are you fucking serious? IT'S A WEBSITE, NOT A LIFESTYLE.

Posted by Anonymous | August 23, 2007 8:31 PM

RIDGEWOOD?!?! What a weird place to play..Its like stereotypical suburban. I guess they wanna bring the rock out here?

Question. If is juusstt a surburban bar, do you think theyre very strict about their ages to get in? Im 17.. and i could get a fake id but im not too sure how my frriends would pull that off. They look like 11.

Ridgewood is the new Williamsburg...

Posted by Enony | August 24, 2007 2:46 AM

Hey All,
I'm the person who booked this show (as well as the JOHN VANDERLSICE show on Sept 25th at Blend that is about to be announced). To answer everyone's questions:

1. Ridgewood is a nice town, safe, lots of street parking, as well as a few parking lots. Blend will validate your parking stub for the Municipal lot on Chestnut street so you can park for free & with ease (unlike Hoboken or NYC!)

2. Their is a restaurant upstairs as well as the Bistro & the "Bistro Stage" - which is the tiny, 100 person part you are thinking of. The room downstairs is where these shows will be taking place, and it is around the size of Mercury Lounge and a tad bit bigger than Maxwells. You can see some pics at www.blendbar.com

3. The shows are 21+

4. Ridgewood is the new Williamsburg. Spread the word. Its also close to Nyack, Ramapo College, Elmwood Park, Fairlawn, Pleasurable Piercings (Hawthorne) and a ton of other places where tons of bands have come out of. There's also a train station a block away for those that need some mass transit to get there.

5. Place has great sound and great air conditioning, which is definitely a huge plus.

Also, on a side note, Michael T got added to the Blaqk Audio show at Grand Ballroom on Sept 7th.

what train? also how much it costs and how long it takes, from NYC

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2007 12:54 PM

You have 2 options:
Take the path to Hoboken, then connect to "Main & Bergen Co Line" to Ridgewood. From Hoboken it takes about 30 minutes.

Penn Station to Ridgewood a little under an 1 hour by train. You transfer at the Secacus Junction to the "Main & Bergen Co Line" and get off in Ridgewood.

There's also a bunch of buses that goto NYC and Hoboken. You can also take any train that connections into either Secaucus or Hoboken from points south or points west of Ridgewood.

Posted by Heath | August 24, 2007 2:08 PM

Take the 163 bus from Port Authority, it drops you off about a block away.

Posted by Anonymous | August 24, 2007 2:42 PM

Fuck 21+! That sucks.

Posted by Derrick | August 24, 2007 5:22 PM

they just added a show in montclair

Posted by anon | August 24, 2007 8:14 PM

just a heads up but the trains stop running fairly early so keep track of time.

Posted by ridgewoood | August 24, 2007 9:13 PM

seriously? where?

Posted by Anonymous | August 25, 2007 1:07 AM

"Ridgewood is the new Williamsburg" if you are a child of the idle rich. I'm happy that a great show is going up at Blend that is worth seeing, however, to make a claim like that is plain misleading. The kids that grew up in that area can't afford to stay there (like me).

That's like saying Alpine is the new Greenpoint. It makes no sense.

"That's like saying Alpine is the new Greenpoint. It makes no sense."

unless you have a sense of humor. then it makes sense.

Posted by Anonymous | August 25, 2007 7:02 PM

Michael Strahan's villa on Lloyd Road. no....no show in Montclair.

Posted by anon 8:14 pm | August 26, 2007 4:20 PM

The Ridgewood is the new Williamsburg was a tongue-in-cheek comment.. Apartment prices aren't that far off from Williamsburg tho...

Either way, it is really only minutes from surrounding towns where people that do like these types of bands live. While the actual town residents are unlikely to know who Cloud Cult, Land of Talk or John Vanderslice is, its not really much different from other venues in NYC that are in the same boat of the music fans not being exactly local to the venue - ie: United Palace, Bowery Ballroom or Irving Plaza for that matter. I'd say more people that goto those venues live a 25 minute train or cab ride away than those that are within 25 minutes.

'"Ridgewood is the new Williamsburg" if you are a child of the idle rich.'

Hate to break it to you, but Williamsburg is the new Williamsburg if you are a child of the idle rich.

Posted by Anonymous | September 8, 2007 9:25 AM

No offense to heath or anyone but williamsburg is in a major population center whereas ridgewood is where you go to have dinner where entrees start at $29.50. Besides this lesson in reality, good for jersey guy heath as most folks outside of brooklyn and LES have never heard of 85% of the bands gaped about on BV.

goes without saying that heath works for corporate concert promoter JOHN SCHER AND METROPOLITAN ENTERTAINMENT so dont' anyone think this is the LITTLE guy pushing for cool shows...this is someone looking to capitalize on a trend.

Cheers!

I was pretty shocked to see the Blend date for Cloud Cult. I'd been to the bar a few times and had no idea there was even a downstairs area, or that bands I'd like to see played there.

I had been planning on going to the Bowery show, but Ridgewood is only 20 minutes away so this was much easier. The sound was pretty good, room was about the same size as Mercury lounge, Cloud Cult was excellent.

I was surprised that there were so few people there - thought it might be my chance to snag a painting, but was outbid (I was in Ridgewood after all).

I'll be keeping an eye on their calendar. It would be nice to have a nearby venue that books the bands I like. I would imagine there are a decent amount of northern NJ people who would rather stay local than have to trek to NYC to see a good show.
